recognize all women who build our communities, making them better every day. It takes a village to raise a child, and our villages have women who are moms, sisters, daughters, teachers, doctors, first responders, politicians, judges, authors, entertainers, business leaders, nurses, social workers, counselors and so much more. Mother’s Day is May 9, so start making plans now. A great way to honor Mom—and

We are proud to share the nature photography of Tower Lakes' Stephen Barten in a story that looks at the abundance of local hiking trails. Working moms are especially susceptible to the perils of disordered gambling. Elizabeth Thielen, a counselor at nearby Nicasa Behavorial Health Services says in her story that help is but a phone call away. We are pleased to introduce Kristen Todoroff with her debut story in SW Lake. She’s a certified Holistic Health Coach at Be Well 360, specializing in working with women to help them reach their nutrition, health and wellness goals. We’re also happy to showcase the great photos by Julie Snyder accompanying Kristen’s story.

Wo r k i n g M o m s a n d D i s o rd e re d G a m b l i n g

WITH THE NEW FORMS OF GAMBLING IN OUR COMMUNITIES AND ON OUR PHONES AND COMPUTERS, A LOT OF NEW GAMBLERS (INCLUDING WOMEN) ARE COMING INTO THE MARKET. Someone new to gambling might not visit a casino or race track, but small video-gaming parlors we drive by daily seem a little more approachable for newcomers. Convenience is another factor. Video slots and poker can be played at convenience stores, fraternal organizations or restaurants. Then, there’s always the lottery, available at gas stations, grocery stores, convenience stores and online. Our constant tethering to our devices enables sneaking in a quick online casino game, slots, or sports wager while passing time or seeking ways to de-stress. Whatever the game-of-choice, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing if we realize that all forms of gambling carry some risk. There are safer ways to play, but these strategies aren’t always intuitive. What seems to make sense on the surface isn’t always the case. Here’s a timeless example from 1913 at a Monte Carlo casino. After the spinning roulette ball landed on black a few times in a row, more players came to the table. With every successive spin, the ball again settled on black, as more bettors joined the throng. Bets were placed, the wheel spun, the ball landed on black (again!) and more money changed hands. Every time the ball landed on black, players were increasingly convinced the next spin would be red. The ball landed on black 27 times in a row. Millions of dollars were lost. Although it seemed the next result should have been red, roulette outcomes are never based on the previous result. Like flipping a coin, a roulette ball has a 50/50 chance of landing on black every time it is spun, regardless of black or red the turn before. The Monte Carlo example shows how gamblers can play more frequently or intensely than planned, without some “basic training” on safer, responsible gambling strategies. For some, what starts as an infrequent form of recreation becomes problematic. Finances, relationships, jobs, mental health, even physical health can be affected.

About the Author: Elizabeth Thielen is a problem gambling counselor, overseeing gambling services at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services (Nicasa.org). Free workshops are available for mahjong/bridge groups or service clubs. A counselor can talk over the phone about your gambling, or that of a loved one. THIS MOTHER’S DAY, TAKE MOM FOR A HIKE TO ENJOY THE MANY HEALTHFUL BENEFITS ALONG OUR LOCAL TRAILS

AH, THE FRESH AIR. The views. The exercise while getting out to stretch the legs after another long winter. Mothers and their families will appreciate getting together outside to enjoy the many benefits of hiking the local trails in and around Lake County. Not only will families be able to spend time together in the fresh air to enjoy the company of each other and take in the sights, the very act of movement outside offers so many curative qualities. Research shows that to maintain a healthy weight it’s important to match the calories burned over the course of the day with the calories consumed. If you’re looking to drop a few pounds, hiking (or walking around the neighborhood) can help create a calorie deficit. The secret to losing weight is to burn more calories than you take in each day. Something as simple as an hour-long walk can burn up to 500 calories.

TAKE A HIKE (CONTINUED)

Here in our corner of the (ahem) woods, there are an abundance of walking/hiking options. Considering we’re living on the mostly flat bottom of what was once a vast ocean, the degree of difficulty here from hiking is relatively low, thanks to the absence of extreme hills. Flat walking means most folks can cover a lot of ground in an hour while sharing conversations and the occasional glimpses of the wildlife with which we share this area. Tower Lakes photographer Dr. Stephen Barten shared with us some photos he’s taken over the years, ranging from local and migratory birds to plenty of four-legged furry critters. One of his favorite places for capturing these images is Crabtree Nature Center in Barrington Hills (3 Stover Road). This marvelous park has three short trails and is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The network of trails winds through woods and a prairie section next to marshes, and includes a boardwalk section over Bullrush Pond. Further north in Barrington is Cuba Marsh. Through

an

intergovernmental

agreement

between the Barrington Park District and Lake County, Barrington’s Citizen’s Park (site of the former Jewel Tree Company headquarters) is a good place to start. Parking is available on the north side of the park (near the train tracks). Start hiking east where the trail merges into Cuba Marsh for an adventure on well-traveled, well-marked trails. If Mother’s Day on May 9 is a sunny day, expect to greet a lot of fellow hikers along the way, including on the iconic long boardwalk that curves over the namesake marsh in the center of the park.

DURING CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK, ST. FRANCIS DE SALES CATHOLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS SENT APPROXIMATELY 300 CARDS TO COMMUNITY WORKERS IN GRATITUDE FOR THEIR HARD WORK DURING THE PANDEMIC. Principal Kyle Schmitt said, “Catholic Schools Week is a great opportunity to celebrate and live out two of our school norms: Community and Service. I’m glad that our students decided to strengthen these relationships with our Police, Fire and Rescue, and community workers and express their appreciation and encouragement.” K-2 Students wrote letters to the Lake Zurich Police Department, 3rd-4th graders thanked LZ firefighters and paramedics, 5th-6th graders wrote letters to local nursing home residents, and 7th-8th graders sent letters to thank St Francis de Sales parish staff. LZ Police Chief Steve Husak said, “Our officers enjoy the great relationship we have with St. Francis de Sales School! We look forward to continuing to work with their students and hope that we can soon interact in person.” Cards sent to LZ firefighters/paramedics included personal messages such as “Thank you for keeping people and pets safe. I want to be a paramedic when I’m older,” and “Thank you so much—I can’t believe a real life firefighter is reading this!” St. Francis de Sales Catholic School is a two-time winner (2007, 2018) of the Department of Education’s National Blue Ribbon Program.
