“Time to find a smaller, maintenance free home with age appropriate neighbors. Wipe the tears away and call Renee Clark. Anyone can list a home, but Renee will work to find you the type of buyer that appreciates your home and wants to make the same kind of memories you have made there. She has made this transition such a positive experience and has always been there to make it stress free for us, even when it meant driving many miles to meet someone when we could not. Renee is not only a great realtor, she is an amazing person as well. She is honest, trustworthy and knowledgeable. She is a great negotiator and when necessary, she can be a “bulldog”. My only regret is that I didn’t meet her sooner.”

TAKE OWNERSHIP IN YOUR MINDSET, REGULATE YOUR EMOTIONS, AND COMMIT TO ACTIONS FOR A HAPPIER, HEALTHIER 2021.
JANUARY IS A MONTH THAT CAN CAUSE
HOPE,

COMMITMENT IN SOME, WHILE FOR OTHERS IT BRINGS ON STRESS, UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS, AND SHAME. Not to mention, in February this year we reach the notorious 12th month of living during a global pandemic. If we break it down, I feel it is safe to say no one could have prepared for the distress, disconnect, and discomfort Covid-19 has induced or exacerbated whether it be personally, professionally or politically. We as a nation have had a lot to sift through and endure while in isolation. As a certified coach in life, leadership, connection, and habit change I have found a lot of success in becoming disciplined in three concepts:
+ Acceptance. + Becoming an emotion scientist. + Revival.

SUSAN BURNS, ALISON TSENG & SANDY SMITH PRACTICE WHAT THEY TEACH: CALMING THE MIND AND STRENGTHENING THE BODY.
YOGA OFFERS A UNIQUE APPROACH OF LINKING THE MIND, BREATH, AND BODY. We recently had an email conversation with the owners of Pulsation Yoga to explore the origins of their business and why yoga is something to consider in the New Year. This is an edited transcript of their words. SW LAKE: IN 2021 WHY SHOULD ANYBODY LEAN INTO YOGA? PULSATION YOGA: We believe that yoga offers a unique approach of linking the mind, breath and body to calm the mind and strengthen the body. We practice intentions and concepts on-themat that then translate into everyday life off-the-mat. It’s more than just exercise. There is the physical movement, but with that the student finds stillness in the mind and openness in the heart, which gives a sense of peace, calm and intention that is unmatched in other forms of exercise.

A PATH TO A BETTER 2021 (CONTINUED)
SWL: WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES TO YOGA? PY: Yoga is designed to honor the practitioner’s body at whatever state it is in. Yoga is accessible for all body types, ages and abilities. It’s just a matter of finding the right class whether it’s the Basics with a focus on foundational poses or Level 2 with a more advanced and athletic approach. There are other options in between, such as yin and restorative yoga that focus more on stillness and gaining flexibility. Plus-sized yoga helps make poses more accessible for anybody. SWL: WHAT LIMITS ARE THERE TO YOGA, IF ANY? PY: There really are no limitations to yoga. The “practice” of yoga must be adapted each time we step on the mat to the limitations we bring, either through injury, disease or inability to focus from the pressures of life. Because so many people focus on the physical aspect of practice, it is important to practice with an experienced yoga instructor who understands alignment, modifications and different ways to experience the same poses. SWL: WHY DO YOGA IN A GUIDED WAY— WHETHER IN-PERSON OR REMOTELY VIA SOMETHING LIKE ZOOM? PY: While there are many videos and books to provide instruction in yoga, practicing in person or live online with a trained instructor ensures that the student receives a safe, personalized practice. Using a video or a book builds familiarity with poses and names, but without the personal aspect of in-person or online, students can lose the accountability, the improvements and most importantly, the sense of community that comes with practicing yoga with others. SWL: SO HOW DID THE PARTNERS OF PULSATION YOGA COME TOGETHER? PY: The business was founded in 2011. When the original owners announced their retirement in 2019, the three of us came together to make a big decision. Each of us had long-term ties to the studio as students, trainees and instructors. But it was more

Another important factor to consider is affordability. If you’re thinking about moving after retirement, you may want to simply downsize locally. If kids are grown and gone, you probably don’t need as much space. Your changing needs may be better served with a smaller home. For most, retirement can mean you’ll have a smaller income than you did when working. So, having a smaller mortgage or rent payments, lower property taxes and insurance, and less maintenance and repairs can save a bundle. If you are nearing retirement, 2021 may be the year for a new and exciting chapter in life. You no longer have to dedicate time and energy to a job. For many retirees, this means a return to focusing on your own wants and needs. One of the most significant changes new retirees often consider is moving to a new city or state. The idea of relocating is an exciting way to embrace your new life. But it’s also a big decision you should consider carefully, especially if it means leaving family and friends behind. reasons retirees choose to relocate. Most often, they want to live in a place that offers a better way of life. A significant factor retirees consider is choosing someplace where they’d love to live. Maybe after years of living in SW Lake County you’re ready for the excitement of downtown Chicago. Maybe the idea of another Midwest winter has you longing to hike in the desert, enjoy the mountains or experience sunsets at the beach. After you retire, you’re better able to prioritize your personal preferences when deciding where to live. Think about what things you enjoy and the type of environment that makes you feel your best to help narrow down options.

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR NEW LIFE WHEN YOU MOVE AWAY When relocating the best thing to do is go into it prepared. You’ll want to begin by figuring out precisely what you want out of your new home, town, and life to narrow down the places that make the most sense for you. Even if you already have a dream location in mind, know the reasons why you want to live there and that it will meet your expectations for retirement. It’s a good idea to visit any new place you’re seriously considering. Check out the more mundane aspects of it, like places to run errands. Talk to locals, particularly those at a similar stage of life, and get their perspective. Realtors and librarians are excellent resources for getting more information about what your potential new hometown has to offer. Once you’ve relocated, look for ways to get involved and become a part of your new community. Leaving

In some ways, living away from your family (and friends) can make seeing each other in-person even better. When you live near family, you may not put as much effort into seeing each other or the quality of your time together because everyone’s lives are so busy. If you live further away, the time you spend together will be more focused, special and memorable. You can travel to each other’s locations or meet for vacations together for a fun change of pace. The time leading up to visits can be fulfilling, too, with countdowns or planning together as time for a visit gets closer, and excitement builds.

explore, think, and see a world of opportunity. My biggest realization of this pandemic was the evolution of this book; as a rookie, I learned a new craft to make sense of the world through prose, poetry and art. In 2021, I look to a rejuvenating world. Science will help us repair and restore the damage done to bodies and minds, friends and families. It will give us confidence to invest in our futures, and re-build the routines that keep us grounded and effective. And it will renew my personal faith that people can accomplish great things. I’ve learned to embrace gratitude more than ever. What also became ever clearer was that science also confirms that the power of poetry, in any form, by any writer, enhances our wellbeing and even promotes physical and emotional healing. Metaphorical imagery and the uniqueness of creative expression have shown proof, in brain imagery scans and blood chemistry, to enhance brain function. This evidence obviously appeals to me as a behavioral scientist. As an artist and writer though, I engage because of how great it feels (not to mention how it helps lower my blood pressure). At the end of the day it is good to know that the many benefits are for real. I encourage you to let the past year really influence your inner compass around what you now feel are your priorities, including your real gifts that may have lain dormant until now. Don’t try to drown out these deeper emotions that appear. Let them resonate, so they may give you greater perspective and meaning to move forward. You have these gifts. Let this new year be the time you too summit that metaphorical mountain, to both respect the routine and give more time to the pursuit of your adventures that lay somewhere past your own mythological creek. Wear warm gloves, too. Lake Barrington’s Russ Riendeau has authored 12 books; his newest, Somewhere Past Gum Creek, is available on Amazon Kindle. Riendeau’s unique art has been featured several times in SW Lake Lifestyle. Find us on Facebook (@SWLakeLifestyle.com) to enter a raffle for a printed copy of his book. CityLifestyle.com/SWLake

bullet journaling 101
Let’s face it—in today’s so-much-to-do-
and-so-little-time cultural mindset, it can be hard to keep track of everything we need to do. Wake up—did you get enough sleep? Brush your teeth. Feed the kids. Feed the dog. Get ready for work. Make your lunch. Those are just six things to think about in the span of 15 minutes after your alarm goes off. With all of these things to keep track of and our lives moving a mile a minute, anything we

It’s equal parts calendar, meal tracker, diary, self care and, well, really anything else that you want to keep tabs on! The “mindfulness practice disguised as a productivity system,” coined by creator Ryder Carroll, can help you master the art of intentional living—any way you want to.

start simple When you start searching for bullet journaling on Pinterest, it can get really overwhelming really fast. Decide what is most important for you to keep track of and start with that! If you try to do too much at once, you’ll be less likely to stick with it.
