The nationally-acclaimed exhibition, “Ansel Adams: Early Works,” provides insight into Adams’ evolution as a champion of wilderness and the environment. Nicasa is partnering with the National Council on Problem Gambling to participate in this year’s “Responsible Gifting” campaign. The campaign seeks to educate parents and other caring adults about the risks of giving lottery tickets to teens and minors during the holidays, and other times of the year. Young brains are adversely affected by exposure to gambling, just like with alcohol or drugs. Nicasa will share tips on last-minute gift giving and other ideas to help adults forego giving lottery tickets to kids this year and moving forward.

Nicasa offers free guest speakers for businesses, organizations or schools, free materials (digital or print), and we’ll send someone to share information and giveaways at your resource or health fair.

AS A PHOTOGRAPHER, CONSERVATIONIST, WRITER AND TEACHER, ANSEL ADAMS (1902-1984) WAS OVERWHELMINGLY INFLUENTIAL WITH GENERATIONS OF ARTISTS AND ENVIRONMENTALISTS. The Bess Bower Dunn Museum of Lake County, at 1899 W. Winchester Road, Libertyville, is featuring the photographer’s work from November 6, 2021 through March 27, 2022. This nationally-acclaimed exhibition, “Ansel Adams: Early Works,” provides insight into Adams’ evolution as a champion of wilderness and the environment. “Ansel Adams, a giant in the field of landscape photography, was one of the most influential photographers of his generation,” said Andrew

Ansel Adams, ca. 1950

Adams was also a musician. For much of his early adulthood, he was torn between a career as a concert pianist versus one in photography. He famously likened the photographic negative to a musical score, and the print to performance. He said that family and friends tried to convince him to continue with piano. “Do not give up your music; the camera cannot express the human soul,” friends told him. Adams replied, “I found that while the camera does not express the soul, perhaps a photograph can!” The famed artist suffered financial pressures until late in life. In an effort to make ends meet, he spent much time as a commercial photographer for clients including the National Park Service, Kodak, IMB, and Life, Fortune and Arizona Highways magazines. He said that the commercial work was necessary for practical reasons but that it was very restraining to his creative work. Early viewing night

THE SW LAKE TEAM RECALLS SPECIAL PERSONAL MOMENTS OF THE HOLIDAYS

H o l i d ay M e m o r i e s CHRISTINA SIKORSKI SWL REGULAR CONTRIBUTOR ZOO TRIP Since we were first married, we have made a habit of visiting Brookfield Zoo to see the holiday lights. Now with the kids, we have a routine of visiting our favorite cold weather animals (polar bears, gray wolves, and penguins), getting special cocoa, and taking photos all around the zoo. Last year to encourage social distancing, the Brookfield Zoo offered the “Game of Gnomes.” We trekked all around the park on our festive scavenger hunt. Every year, we enjoy the lights, the music, and most of all, the time together.

MICHAEL BEIGHTOL PUBLISHER, SW LAKE FAMILY PHOTOS The Beightol Family has put some thought and effort into our annual holiday card. Over the years the card has included the kids picking out a Christmas tree, enjoying a snowy wintry day or out and about at various holiday events (including Christkindl Market). One year I had the idea of mixing things up by hiring a photographer to shoot campy staged photos of our family. While the photos by Matthew Bowie were terrific, I find myself the butt of all jokes from my family.

Our go-to destination for many years now has been Naples, Florida. While Amanda and I take advantage of basking in the warmth of sunny Florida for the holidays at the beach or fishing, our boys, Jackson and Tyler, indulge themselves in yummy treats!

LAUREN EVE LAKE ZURICH RESIDENT HOLIDAY LIGHTS When we tell our kids to get in their comfy pajamas (including mom and dad), grab some warm blankets, and head to the car, they know it can only mean one thing; it’s time to see Christmas lights! A quick drive-thru stop for hot cocoa is a must. Together, we spend the evening marveling at the dancing lights and singing along to Christmas carols from the radio. Our holiday adventure ends at home snuggled up together, eating popcorn, and watching The Polar Express.

STEPHEN NEILSON EDITOR & CHIEF PHOTOGRAPHER, SW LAKE HOLIDAY MUSIC For the Neilsons, it’s always been the music. Songs of the season, songs sacred and secular, of saints and santas and scrooges and sinners alike, they’ve spawned spectacular memories we’ll never forget. Launching and leading the Chorale at Discover Card for 27 years of seasonal celebrations is both a personal and professional career highlight. Bringing genuine joy, cheer and laughter to workplace celebrations, nursing homes, small business celebrations, employee recognitions, support-services celebrations, civic events and more has inscribed an indelibly warm imprint on our hearts. Directing, singing in, and writing music for church choirs and congregations in Arizona, California, Georgia and Illinois has been a center of our faith experience and our friendships. Rallying the remarkable, recklessly rowdy, raconteur-like locals to form the Wauconda Singers and for two years spread holiday cheer at local main-street businesses and help lead the march to our annual community Christmas Tree lighting a few years back was delightful icing on our holiday cake. To our musical family connected over distance and decades: thanks for sharing your talents and spreading joy and cheer to so many. It means so much personally to Lisa and to me. GIVING BACK

Gratefully

ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy
