BACK-TO-SCHOOL. It’s a phrase that can strike terror in the hearts of children and evoke sweet relief for parents. In this issue of SW Lake Lifestyle we’re focusing on the positive as we present a collection of stories on Kids and Pets. If a child has trouble seeing the black (or more likely white) board in the classroom, the start of the school year can get off on the wrong foot. The good folks at MyEyeDr. in Lake Zurich encourage moms and dads to schedule a vision health exam before school buses roll this month. Up the road at Save-a-Pet the team there is always hard at work placing cats and dogs with families in Lake County. To date more than 63,000 pets have found homes. (That’s Emma at the top of this page, our very own recent adoptee from Save-a-Pet.) Barrington’s Susan McConnell founded a not-for-profit that encourages families

Finally, we share the story of how high schoolers in our midst are sharing their love of science with younger students in disadvantaged neighborhoods in Lake County. It’s an inspiring story, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we are proud to share it.

LET IT BE US PROGRAMS Programs are the backbone of our work. They are evidence-based and help change the lives of the children we serve – the most vulnerable. SUPPORTING INDIVIDUAL CHILDREN SEEKING ADOPTIVE PARENTS The Let It Be Us experienced recruitment team offers customized solutions for each child referred, creating a new database of parent resources for each child, which is delivered to the child’s caseworker in a speedy and timely manner. Let It Be Us utilizes an aggregated registry of licensed and waiting parents, producing a subscription-based blog and multiple social media platforms that reach thousands of licensed parents while targeting specific locations and demographics. RECRUITING FOSTER AND ADOPTIVE PARENTS The Let It Be Us Adoption and Foster Care Information Fairs directly recruit foster and adoptive parents for waiting Illinois children. Events are led by Let It Be Us Foster and Adoptive Parent Recruiters and Coaches. At our town halls we provide programming that reaches targeted audiences in different areas with different demographics for prospective parents who are married, single or same gender. Large events feature a panel of experts, as well as agencies from the area who set up informational displays. Smaller events are more intimate in nature and are designed for specific audiences. Learn about these events at letitbeus.org/events. THE HEART GALLERY OF ILLINOIS Let It Be Us produces, publishes, manages and markets the Heart Gallery of Illinois which is published online. Growing 400% in the last two years, Let It Be Us collects all inquiries for the children’s profiles. The Heart Gallery of Illinois increases by ten times a child’s opportunity for adoption. 63,000 and Counting

THE SCENE WAS SURPRISING: GUESTS GATHERED UNDER COLORFUL TENTS WHILE MUSIC PLAYED. Brightshirted volunteers directed parking, served food, answered questions and kept smiling broadly. A minister offered a moving prayer. The guests of honor walked around with a spring in their step and were incredibly well behaved. They looked totally spiffed up and thoroughly enjoyed the non-stop parade of other guests of honor. Some were playful, some were shy and all were saved. At the annual reunion of rescued pets at Save-A-Pet in Grayslake, the guests of honor comprised a wide variety of dogs—big, small, and even tiny. Most seemed to be of the “All American” breed, as is the case at most rescue centers. It was a crazy quilt of mixed breed dogs and their very happy humans. Save-A-Pet started the tradition of an annual reunion years ago to thank the folks who had rescued pets while raising awareness for the service provided for the community. It’s one of the largest no-kill cat and dog rescues in Lake County with a full-time adoption center. The facility is a safe haven for animals that have been abused, neglected, injured, lost or have escaped euthanasia elsewhere. There’s never a limit on the amount of animals in their care. Instead, Save-A-Pet offers rescued dogs and cats the greatest opportunity for a second chance. With a large cadre of volunteers, the staff and board of directors take great pride in practicing a no-kill mission and in stewarding donors’ contributions, both of which have led to the successful adoption of more than 63,000 dogs and cats. Save-A-Pet is a true no-kill rescue. There’s no temperament test for dogs and cats, nor is there discrimination against age, health or any breeds. Their mantra of “Help, Heal, Home” means Save-A-Pet always provides an animal with a second chance to find a home. The adoption center provides high-quality care for rescued animals to help them heal physically and emotionally. Through a network of animal care providers, including veterinarians, orthopedic surgeons, veterinary specialists, animal massage therapists, behaviorists, and trainers, each cat or dog has the opportunity to heal based on their unique needs. In addition, the Save-A-Pet team works very hard to ensure that each adoption is a successful and long-term placement for the animals. Every successful adoption represents the execution of its mission to save the lives of cats and dogs that otherwise wouldn’t have had a chance. All this good work doesn’t come cheap. With annual expenses of nearly $2 million (2017), Save-A-Pet depends on contributions from the community, donations, year-round fundraising, adoption

“COLLEEN UNDERSTANDS THE IMPACT THAT PROPER DIET HAS ON WELL-BEING AND LIFE LONGEVITY FOR THE PETS HER CUSTOMERS BRING INTO THEIR LIVES.” COLLEEN BERG IS A SINGLE MOM OF FIVE NOW-GROWN CHILDREN, AND A GRANDMA OF A BEAUTIFUL GRANDDAUGHTER (WITH ANOTHER GRANDCHILD ON THE WAY). She’s been very active in animal rescue for more than 15 years, and is an untiring advocate for better pet health. A serial entrepreneur, she owns a pet bakery called Animal Crackers that concocts an amazing variety of all natural, human-grade treats for dogs, cats, horses, birds and bunnies. And if she wasn’t busy enough already, she has opened a delightful pet shop in the downtown Wauconda Main Street Center that offers pet foods and supplies (including horse products), healthy treats and supplements, fun gift ideas and so much more. It’s not at all unusual when customers visit her shop - Main St. Pet Boutique & Bakery – to see a dog or two, the occasional cat and even recently, a box of kittens that Colleen fostered for a time. Her depth of knowledge on pet health is remarkable. She understands the impact that proper diet has on well-being and life longevity for the pets her customers bring into their lives. If there’s something a customer wants – and Colleen doesn’t carry – she’ll special order it for delivery to the customer’s home. Main St. Pet Boutique & Bakery is shifting the paradigm for what to expect from a pet store. Learn more by visiting facebook.com/ MainStPetBoutique.

“OUR CURRICULUM INTRODUCES YOUNGER STUDENTS TO BASIC SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS IN AN IMMERSIVE WAY WHILE ALSO ALLOWING THEM TO EXPLORE TOPICS OF PERSONAL INTEREST.”

SCIENCE FOR FUTURE (SFF) IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION FOUNDED IN 2012 IN CALIFORNIA BY SNIGDHA BANDA, A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WHO NOTICED THAT MANY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN LOW INCOME AREAS WERE NOT RECEIVING MUCH IN THE WAY OF SCIENCE INSTRUCTION. When I (Trisha Patel, a rising senior at Stevenson High School) learned about this program, I thought it would be a great way to help younger students discover their interest in science while sharing my own academic passion. An Illinois chapter of SFF was launched in 2017. Last year I became President of SFF, and fellow Stevenson students Lauren Malenfant and Julia Dorr became Illinois Chapter Presidents. SFF is currently teaching science lessons at 11 local schools and has taught more than 1,000 grade schoolers. Low income schools are often unable to afford the materials or equipment necessary for hands-on teaching of science through labs or complex projects. As a consequence, these disadvantaged students miss out on the interactive lessons and experiences that can spark an interest in science. They are also exposed to a narrower range of content. SFF aims to provide students with exposure to content and lab projects that their schools are unable to offer. Our curriculum introduces younger students to basic scientific concepts in an immersive way while also allowing them to explore topics of personal interest. In our after-school programs we cover topics in the fields of biology, ecology and physics and use real-world applications to expose grade school kids to the importance of science in their own community. SFF provides hands-on learning and interest-driven projects for younger students to motivate them to love science and learning in general. We hope that, in return, the students will take an interest in becoming active members of their communities. Throughout the years, SFF instructors have built relationships with their younger students and learned from each other. As volunteers the high schoolers offer mentorship and guidance as they teach the younger kids new concepts, but the learning goes both ways. Interactions give us as volunteers an understanding of the way that the younger kids think and offers a different perspective on learning and life than we are used to.

GIVING BACK

(CON TI N U ED)

From left: Lauren Malenfant, Julia Dorr, and Trisha Patel.

During a typical lesson, a SFF instructor will start with a slideshow presentation about the topic of the week. Topics range from the structure of an atom to the water cycle, habitats and biomes. The grade schoolers are given journals for note-taking, and they write down key vocabulary words and points during their lessons. After the slideshow, instructors lead the students in activities or experiments pertaining to the topics, such as balancing paper clips on water to demonstrate cohesion, building clay models of the layers of the earth, and playing a musical chairs-type game simulating varying bodies of water. This past year, one of the groups we led was at John S. Clark Elementary (Waukegan). We established the school’s first science fair for the end of the session to help the young students solidify their interest in a topic of their choice. The kids choose topics based on either something they had learned or were interested in learning more about. They conducted their own research, performed their own experiments, and presented their research to fellow classmates, parents and teachers. Principal Gladys Rodriguez invited Waukegan Mayor Sam Cunningham to the science fair. Subsequently, the Mayor expressed his thanks by presenting us with a Waukegan Proud Award (Trisha) and a Service Recognition Award (Julia and Lauren). SFF has an impact on students that is both profound and notable. The volunteers share that the more they teach, the more the kids’ curiosity grows. On the last day of teaching at Village Elementary School in Round Lake, the kids gave us thank you notes and drawings. At John S. Clark Elementary, a SFF instructor noticed that one girl was not opening up quite as much as the others. At first she did not seem interested, but as the sessions continued she dedicated herself to a complex topic regarding time travel for her final research and experimentation project that impressed everyone. Over the past two years SFF has expanded to other Lake County schools including St. Anastasia, Fairhaven and Calvin elementary schools. As the program has spread, SFF instructors have seen students grow in their knowledge and enthusiasm. Although we know SFF classes are not a permanent solution for improving science education in elementary schools, we believe anything to help children learn is important. Currently, all SFF volunteer instructors are students at Stevenson High School. Our goal is to be able to reach as many children as possible, and because of that we are looking for more high school volunteers to join Science for Future as instructors. SFF asks that teens from any high school in the area who are interested in teaching science to younger students reach out to us. We would love to expand both the number of schools we reach and the number of high schoolers who dedicate their time and effort to helping students learn and grow. Also, in order to provide the materials needed to teach students and allow them flexibility in what they decide to do for their research/experiment projects, we would greatly appreciate any donations; any amount can help make a difference. PARTING THOUGHTS

EXCELLENCE IN SCHOOL BEGINS WITH YOUR CHILD’S VISION. An annual eye health exam should be at the top of every family’s back-to-school checklist. Did you know that vision changes can occur without your child even noticing? Children don’t necessarily understand what “normal” vision is, and a comprehensive eye exam can catch vision issues that might inter-

fere with learning. Clear, comfortable vision doesn’t just make it easier to see the blackboard, it also helps them process and remember what’s being taught. Students today use a variety of digital tools, including tablets, smart phones and e-readers. Digital eyestrain is a common condition that may affect learning and productivity. Symptoms of digital eyestrain can include blurry vision, loss of focus, and dry, tired eyes. Tell your child about the 20-20-20 rule to help reduce digital eye strain. Every 20 minutes, they should take a 20 second break and focus on something 20 feet away. Schedule an annual eye health exam today to get your child the prescription they need. MyEyeDr. in Lake Zurich accepts all insurances, and has the stylish frames your child will love showing off on the first day of school.
