ON THE DAY IN MID-APRIL WHEN I PENNED THIS NOTE MY LAWN CARE PROVIDER WAS PREPPING THE YARD FOR SPRING DURING A SNOW FLURRY. Spring is fleeting and tenuous around here. It got me wondering about why this month is called May. Turns out we can thank the ancient Greeks. The fifth month of the year in the Gregorian calendar and its predecessor, the Julian calendar, is named after the Greek goddess Maia, who is also identified with the Roman goddess of fertility, Bona Dea. Regardless of its origins, May is a pretty big deal. The month ends with the official start of summer (Memorial Day Weekend). This month we also take time to celebrate the graduates among us (including my family's youngest, Eric, who takes the walk on May 11 to nab his degree from the University of Iowa). Arguably, the biggest day of the month is May 12 – Mother’s Day. In this issue we celebrate women with a slew of great stories. From a MotherDaughter Hawaiian vacation to our annual celebration of local Women of Distinction,

Premier Preschool Nurtures Literacy Skills at All Ages Research shows that the first five years of a child’s life hold the most potential for development – consider it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for learning! During these years, it’s crucial to nurture early literacy skills, like rhyming and letter and sound recognition, which lay the groundwork for fundamental abilities such as reading, writing and spelling. As with any skill or subject, there’s no one-size-fitsall approach to teaching literacy skills, especially since children learn to read and write at different rates and ages. At Primrose School of Long Grove, teachers understand the need to support children based on their individual needs. The Primroseexclusive approach, called Balanced Learning®, offers varied experiences that spark children’s curiosity regardless of their learning style through a balance of purposeful play with nurturing guidance from teachers. “Balanced Learning is special because it takes into consideration children’s developmental levels and provides different, connected experiences so that they can learn in their own way and at their own pace,” said Jenny Wierzchon, Franchise Owner of Primrose School of Long Grove. “Whether it’s literacy skills, motor skills, music, arts, science or life skills, the learning is just natural and fun for the children.” The Balanced Learning Approach to Reading and Writing Every day, Primrose® children participate in literacy lessons that are taught in a fun, game-like way. Using rhymes, poems and songs, children exercise oral fluency skills – the ability to communicate clearly – and memory, comprehension skills, new vocabulary and phonological awareness. Similarly, children are guided by teachers at the classroom Writing Center to practice writing at their own level, using meaningful writing activities. Part of what makes Balanced Learning unique is that these literacy lessons are woven into classroom experiences throughout the day. For example, teachers explain and use appropriate higher-level math, science and engineering vocabulary during STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) experiences. Throughout the day, children sing songs and recite poems frequently to develop their oral fluency – an important step toward learning to read. Additionally, children engage in meaningful writing projects that vary

from drawing or listing their observations as part of an age-appropriate science experiment to creating thank you notes for loved ones during character development lessons. “At Primrose, we give children opportunities throughout the day to practice reading, speaking, listening and writing to help them view these skills as not only important, but also a natural and enjoyable part of their everyday lives,” said Jenny Wierzchon. “Children experience the activities as play and fun, but in reality, each element of the Primrose approach is designed with a purpose to help them develop the foundational skills they need to succeed later on.” Encouraging Reading and Writing Skills at Home Parents can encourage literacy skills at home through simple activities, like reading with and talking to children, which has been proven to benefit language skills from the time children are born. Examples of other activities that support literacy skill development include: • Reading cardboard books with infants and toddlers so they can hear language while turning the pages and pointing to familiar objects on the page. • Practicing animal noises with toddlers to help them identify and replicate different language sounds. • Playing rhyming games with preschoolers, like trying to name as many words that rhyme with “cat.” • Encouraging both gross and fine motor skill development, which aid children in learning to write. Running and climbing outdoors builds gross motor strength, and stacking and dressing activities grow fine motor skills. • Making writing easily accessible for children by setting up a writing/drawing table in a common area at home with paper, crayons, markers and more. No matter how children are exposed to literacy concepts, they respond best when we relate reading and writing activities to what they love. Write letters to heroes if your child is a superhero fanatic, or read books about ballerinas if your child loves to dance. Connecting literacy lessons with children’s favorite things will help them view reading and writing as fun activities rather than skills to be learned.

SW LAKE PRESENTS WOMEN OF DISTINCTION ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHEN NEILSON

Sam Oliver PRESIDENT NON-PROFIT CONSULTING DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO. I work to bring people together to solve problems and enrich lives. For thirty-one years, I was Staff Director of Citizens for Conservation, “Saving Living Space for Living Things.” SHARE A FEW OF YOUR CAREER ACHIEVEMENTS. These have been in the non-profit world, including receiving the Daily Point of Light Award and several gratifying leadership awards. Recently, I received the first “Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award” from the Barrington Area Development Council, and last summer I was inducted into the Illinois Outdoor Hall of Fame, an award from the Illinois Conservation Foundation and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. TELL US ABOUT YOUR PASSION FOR PEOPLE AND OUR PLANET. My passion is to help us all understand and appreciate that, in the words of Wendell Berry, “…our lives are woven together here, one with another and with the place and all the living things.” WHAT CHARITIES DO YOU SUPPORT, AND WHY? The primary organizations that I currently support are JourneyCare, the Harper College Educational Foundation and Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital. JourneyCare, where I was one of the founders in 1984, touches the lives of many people of all ages at such a critical stage of their life journey. The Educational Foundation is instrumental in providing promising futures for so many students and their families, and Good Shepherd Hospital impacts the health of our community in many ways. WHO HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? My paternal grandmother, as I was watching to see how other people choose to lead their lives. IF NOT HERE, WHERE WOULD YOU MOST LOVE TO BE? At Lookout Point, our cabin on a lake in northern Minnesota. 18

SW Lake Lifestyle | May 2019

“I was lucky to grow up in a close extended family in a small central Illinois community. “

Janet Agnoletti EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR BARRINGTON AREA COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENTS DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO. My work at BACOG is largely about building collaboration across governments. BACOG has had a regional land use plan since 1975, and as a city and regional planner I support the villages and townships on their new development issues. Our biggest environmental program is a multi-faceted water resources initiative I started in 2001 to analyze and map the shallow aquifer system–the source of 99% of our water in BACOG–and the areas of aquifer recharge. We test residents’ private well water, monitor water levels in the shallow aquifer system, map water levels and natural water quality, and provide much public education. The initiative keeps the drinking water sustainable for future generations of BACOG residents. WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? The environment. I believe we're obligated to safeguard this planet that supports us, and I don't think everything should be for sale. YOUR PROUDEST CAREER ACHIEVEMENT? I view the Water Resources Initiative as my most significant, long-term contribution to this community. The science and maps we developed help our governments and conservation organizations prioritize areas to be acquired or protected. The monitoring programs serve as radar to identify any emerging water supply or quality problems, and provide the factual basis for taking remedial action in the future if needed. We’ve raised public awareness about groundwater through our programs and also in Barrington schools with our BACOG groundwater video and Skyping Scientist project. YOUR BIGGEST PERSONAL INFLUENCE? That’s easy: my family. I was lucky to grow up in a close extended family in a small central Illinois community. Mine was the first generation in that family to go to college, and we took on the aspirations and values of our hard-working parents, and our grandparents who were Italian immigrant coalminers. I also took away a deep sense of responsibility, which has guided my work ethic and professional goals. CONTINUED >

ROLE MODELS

(CON TI N U ED)

Laurie Wilhoit PRESIDENT, CARING WOMEN’S CONNECTION MARKETING/COMMUNICATIONS, HISTORIC LONG GROVE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION OWNER, CALL ME SOCIAL BUTTERFLY DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO. I’m a bit of a juggler career-wise: I’m the president of Caring Women's Connection, an all-volunteer 501c3 that raises funds for Lake County women and children in need while having fun and meeting new people; I do marketing and communications for the Historic Downtown Long Grove Business Association; and I have my own business, Call Me Social Butterfly, which helps small businesses with social media, websites and marketing. WHICH CHARITIES DO YOU SUPPORT? My main focus is Caring Women's Connection. I was a member for 8 years when I worked by O'Hare; I couldn’t attend, but followed their newsletters and respected the work they did. When I began working in the area, Cheryl Haas (then President) asked me to join the board. I love helping more people and businesses get involved. Visiting the shelters, hearing the stories, giving children shoes and coats needed for the winter months, that makes a difference. "Alone we help some, together we make a difference" is our tagline and is very true. TELL US ABOUT YOUR PASSION FOR KINDNESS. Kindness is giving back without being asked or expecting a thank you. Kindness in the everyday, making a small difference in someone's world, business and/or personal life, gives me the greatest joy. WHO HAD THE BIGGEST IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE? My dad, Joseph Lis. He was the middle-school Science teacher everyone loved and respected, a wonderful teacher with a great sense of humor. When the school dedicated the science lab to him after being retired for many years, over 200 students came to congratulate him. He received so many messages on how he touched/changed/helped the lives of his family, friends and community.

Renee Clark RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTATE BROKER PRESIDENT, RENEE CLARK REAL ESTATE GROUP (AFFILIATED WITH @PROPERTIES) DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO. I help people move on to the next chapter of their lives by helping them buy and sell their homes. CAREER ACHIEVEMENTS YOU’RE PROUD OF? I am the five-year recipient of the FIVE STAR award for excellence, an award driven by nominations and recommendations by customers. Every time I help someone buy or sell their home, I feel like I’ve made at least a small contribution to someone's quality of life. CHARITIES YOU SUPPORT? I support American Cancer Society, and previously the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. My mother died of breast cancer at age 53. I also love our furry four-legged friends and do what I can to support the groups that rescue them. They are innocent, and bring so much love to the world. They melt my heart and keep me open and centered. TELL US ABOUT YOUR PASSION FOR DOGS. I just love them. They are great companions, workout partners, comforters, playmates. They provide unconditional love. It breaks my heart to know that so many are homeless without someone to love them back. Pet adoption is a gift to each recipient, as well as to the dog or cat who joins the family. WHO HAS HAD THE BIGGEST IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE? Family and good friends are my biggest influencers–especially my dad, Bill Jamison, now 93, who taught me to do what I say I'll do, be a good listener, be kind, and be fair. Tom and I have been married 36 years; we live in Long Grove with our two dogs, Costanza and Elaine. Son Lee and his wife Lea live in Algonquin (with dogs Chloe and Indy); our son Chris lives in Beijing, China.

Every time I help someone buy or sell their home, I feel like I’ve made at least a small contribution to someone’s quality of life.

WomenLaunched Businesses On the Rise Three Area Leaders Say Women Have the Power

+ CLAIRE SLATTERY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR LAKE ZURICH AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HAVE YOU SEEN AN INCREASE YEAR-OVER-YEAR IN WOMEN LAUNCHING NEW BUSINESSES? Between 40-50% of our member companies are women-owned businesses. The number of women who have joined the Chamber either as owners or as lead representatives of their organization quadrupled from 2017 to 2018. Over the past couple of years we have seen several women either starting new businesses from the ground up (meaning designing and building brick & mortar) to purchasing existing businesses in the sectors of retail, restaurant, health & wellness, and beauty salons, among others. HOW DO ORGANIZATIONS FOR WOMEN IN BUSINESS HELP TO NOT ONLY SUPPORT WOMEN IN AN EXISTING BUSINESS, BUT ALSO HELP WHEN A WOMAN LAUNCHES A BUSINESS? You can see women supporting women prominently in our area with the many women-missioned non-profits and networking groups. The support and encouragement women are receiving whether in need or in business encourages all women to go after their dreams and live the life they want to live.

and also have an inner circle of close female contacts are more likely to land high level jobs with higher pay. Successful women support and foster one another, which adds to their success. For a new woman business owner, this inner circle of advice, ideas and support can be critical to getting her business off the ground. If you look at women who soar in business and careers, they soar because they are particularly skilled at combining their intelligence and ambition with diplomacy, sensitivity and mindfulness. These women are particularly good at building relationships, which is key to building business success. + MARIA WEISBRUCH, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WAUCONDA AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE WHY ARE ORGANIZATIONS SPECIFICALLY FOR WOMEN SO CRITICAL? Women network differently. There is a “care” factor that goes into these relationships. We all want to see each other succeed. As far as launching a business I believe a women’s networking group lays out the good, bad and ugly that goes along with opening a business and shares in the compassion of “I’ve been there” and “Here’s what I did.” IS IT TRUE THAT MORE WOMEN LOCALLY ARE ALSO IN POSITIONS OF LEADERSHIP FOR BUSINESSES HERE? For sure. I think many women have long been the backbone of companies, but without the title or the compensation. With that slowly changing I think it is now more evident and recognized. I believe the strength and leadership of women have always been a part of the work force; I’m happy for a shift in recognition and hope to one day see compensation completely equalized. WHAT ARE THE TOP THINGS YOU ADVISE A WOMAN TO DO WHEN SHE STARTS A BUSINESS? Write a business plan and review it every year. Your passion for a business is what first pushes you to dive in. Make sure the passion is on track and tweak when needed. Use free resources available to you. There is great information on small businesses online, and your library is a wealth of information too. Although you need professionals for some things, there is a lot you can do on your own. Do not take no for an answer the first time around. Not from a landlord, vendor or an attorney. “No” can easily be turned into a “maybe”, and “maybe” can be turned into a “yes.” Remember: you are number one. Unless absolutely necessary make this venture for yourself. If you can’t go it alone, be sure to take every precaution before bringing in a partner. Be patient. The rule of thumb is: you will not make money overnight. Plan on investing up to four years of blood, sweat, tears and money before taking a breath. It is a thrill, it is scary, but the reward is unbelievable.

ARTICLE JAY ADAMS

Metropolitan (shown on rear wall)

A New Take on Gray WHEN SOMEONE SAYS A COLOR IS “NEUTRAL” DO YOU IMMEDIATELY THINK OF A WHITE OR A NONDESCRIPT BEIGE? Neutral does not have to mean plain. Benjamin Moore’s color of the year for 2019 is Metropolitan AF-690. The color is a nottoo-light, nor-too-dark gray with a hint of silver underneath. While many neutral colors wash out in bright light, Metropolitan is strong enough to maintain its presence even in well-lit rooms, but not so dark as to close in a smaller space. Metropolitan is a move away from some of the paler, brown-based grays to a slightly cooler and darker tone. It is not, however, so cool as to look blue which in a gray can feel cold and uninviting. Along with Metropolitan there are 14 complementary shades comprising the Color Trends 2019 Palette, including neutrals as well as some stronger colors to mix things up. Neutrals can benefit from an occasional pop of color so as to avoid too much of the same. In the kitchen, gray walls with white cabinets and a darker CONTINUED >

island is a great look. Pairing a strong

navy, such as HC-154 Hale Navy, with gray is classic. Kendall Charcoal HC-166 is a great island color for a monochromatic color palette. The color Smoke 2122-40 is a blue green tone that would work well in a master bedroom suite to create that relaxing spa feel. Using a paler neutral, such as OC-27 Balboa Mist, can lighten up a darker space where perhaps Metropolitan might be too dark or too cool. Using a neutral tone can make a space seem calmer and more serene. It can serve as a retreat from today’s loud and in-yourface world. It can provide a timeless backdrop for art work and accessories that make up your personal style. Neutral colors don’t have to be boring and Metropolitan is a great color for any room in your home. TRAVEL DESTINATION

MAHALO, Hawaii! ARTICLE SUE SHIMKUS

THERE ARE SO MANY GOOD REASONS TO VISIT THE BEAUTIFUL ISLANDS OF HAWAII! I've visited all of the islands over the years, including a special Mother/ Daughter trip with my daughter, Jill, to some of the less-visited islands of Lanai and Molokai, and enjoyed many wonderful experiences. Here are some of my personal highlights for each island:

Honopu Beach

HAWAII, THE BIG ISLAND The Big Island is quintessential Hawaii: the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, with

incredible volcano hikes; the Onizuke Center for International Astronomy, with stargazing tours of 13,796-foot Mauna Kea; or Panaewa Rainforest Zoo, home to some truly exotic animals (like Namaste the white Bengal tiger and Spike the giant anteater). MAUI, THE VALLEY ISLE Maui is where natural wonder and Hawaiian sophistication meet. I loved the magnificent sunrise on the bike trip at the 10,023-foot volcano Haleakala. The Road to Hana is an adventure in itself, as long as you know the secret places to stop! An unspoiled tropical oasis filled with flowers and waterfalls, stay in Hana overnight at one of my favorite resorts followed by a visit to the cascading waterfalls the next day. Whale watching in the winter is great near Lahaina.

LANAI, A WORLD AWAY Famed for his historic pineapple groves, Hawaii’s smallest island offers world-class amenities at the luxurious Four Seasons resorts, rugged back roads for hiking and 4-wheel drives, and beautiful golf courses. I loved watching the Spinner Dolphin acrobatics from Manele Bay! Enjoy the tranquility of a largely untouched world where there are no traffic lights, no crowds, and only 30 miles of paved road. MOLOKAI, HAWAIIAN BY NATURE Unspoiled country and untouched beaches, the chance to truly live as the locals do; that’s Molokai today. Home to the highest sea cliffs in the world and the longest continuous fringing reef off the southern coast, Jill and I enjoyed a horseback ride through the tumbleweeds and white sand beaches, and many Lanai

Waimea

Cosmopolitan Honolulu is filled with upscale shopping and dining, theatre and of course its most famous beach, Waikiki. On Oahu’s North Shore, there is the Polynesian Cultural Center, music, dance, even lei-making. In southeast Oahu near Waikiki is Hanauma Bay, the seafilled crater of an ancient volcano, protected from rough surf and a perfect place for swimming and snorkeling. I experienced the most magnificent double rainbow from the cliffs of a Ko’olau golf course, definitely one of the most challenging I have ever played. KAUAI, THE GARDEN ISLAND Kauai is Hawaii’s natural wonder. Mindboggling, multicolored Waimea Canyon is what I would consider hikers’ heaven, with hiking trails running along the canyon’s rims before dipping down inside its walls.
