MANY OF US ARE TRYING TO BE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY IN OUR DAILY LIVES. We’re more aware of what we put into our bodies, as well as the general state of the planet. Clients of my interior design business ask frequently, “How can I bring greener design into my home?” Here’s a short list of my favorite ways to be more eco-friendly. Use plants for a double-whammy bonus: they give a home a calming spa-like feeling, AND provide oxygen and filter the air you breathe. Avoid products with high VOC content. (Volatile Organic Compounds are chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperatures). VOCs are found in many household paints, flooring, furniture and carpets. Be an eco-consumer by requesting low VOC materials that contain no added formaldehyde. Bring outside light in by freeing windows of blinds and treatments. Make sure you have properly insulated windows to conserve energy and don’t forget that caulking and sealing are critical. Consider renewable materials that include bamboo floors, recycled glass and plastics for surfaces where they make sense for your lifestyle. Also look for furniture made from re-purposed wood.

“METROPOLITAN” IS NEW COLOR TREND When someone says a color is “neutral” do you immediately think of a white or a nondescript beige?

Neutral does not have to mean plain. Jay Adams of Blue Jay Paints & Blinds in Lake Zurich says Benjamin Moore’s color of the year is called Metropolitan AF-690. While many neutral colors wash out in bright light, Metropolitan is strong enough to maintain its presence even in well-lit rooms, but not so dark as to close in smaller spaces. Look for more on Metropolitan in the May issue of SW Lake Lifestyle.

MAIN STREET CENTER RENEWS FOCUS ON HISTORIC DOWNTOWN

Linda Starkey of G&L Investments and owner of Threads Boutique.
THE THROWAWAY AGE IS OVER. While some might see a 1940s structure from a bygone era as just another old building, an energetic Wauconda couple sees it as the cornerstone of an ever-more lively downtown. A two-level, 8000-square-foot building in its 70th year at the heart of Main Street’s historic downtown is being transformed. Located at 118 Main this former Wauconda National Bank property (still sporting its signature walk-in vault) is celebrating its first phase of interior updates. Upgrades to the exterior, outside façade and parking lot are underway. A new design by Pathmann Architecture will prominently feature new “Main Street Center” branding flanked by awnings, panels and decorative lighting to enhance its profile while integrating into the charm of the downtown area. When briefed about Main Street Center, Russ Klettke, a noted Chicago-based writer on sustainability, construction and architecture, says that there’s greater value to a community when a building owner renews an existing space instead of tearing it down and building anew: “[It’s] about the ‘embodied energy’ of buildings -- all the fuel used to mine, haul and manufacture building components (concrete, steel, wood and glass). By and large, if an existing building can be saved and repurposed, it is likely a net gain for the environment.” Purchased in 2018 by G&L Investment Group, the building contains 18 retail/ office suites, on-site parking, and a large common area for special events such as the recent 5th Anniversary celebration of Threads Boutique, a popular women’s and men’s clothing and accessories store owned and operated by Linda Starkey, the “L” of G&L Investments. Since moving to Wauconda in 2005 and later purchasing and renovating a home on Bangs Lake just a brisk 5-minute walk from Main Street Center, Linda and husband Glenn (the “G” of G&L) have been an energizing and transformative force in the community. As well as launching Threads Boutique, Linda is completing her second elected term as Wauconda Village Trustee. Glenn (with brother Don) owns Progressive Components, a business founded by their father and located in Wauconda since 1990. A global supplier to the tooling and molding industry, Progressive is known not only as an award-winning “Best Place To Work” in its industry but as a business whose non-profit arm, STAR Charities, volunteers thousands of hours, generating more than $75,000 in monetary donations and in-kind gifts annually for local causes in need of support.

Coincidentally, the first tenant of the 118 Main building, opened in 1948, was also a clothing store occupying the same space as Threads. “Wauconda Clothiers was the building’s very first tenant (besides the bank, of course),” said Neville Carr, local historian and photo archivist. “Owner Laddie (Ladislav) Bezdek was a tailor who made men’s suits and furnishings by hand. He was in business there until the mid-1950s, when my father established James F. Carr Real Estate and Insurance in that space, until Wauconda Bank moved to Liberty Street in 1976.” The current Main Street Center tenants include Threads, Fusion Church, Country Financial, DLH Enterprises, Hope Counseling, Aspire Counseling, Amerex Group, and National Produce, among others. Local officials commented positively on Main Street Center. “It’s always exciting when a business renovates and renews, but it’s even better when that building is home to many small businesses on a busy street,” said Maria Weisbruch, Executive Director of the Wauconda Area Chamber of Commerce. “The improvements that G&L Investments are making to Main Street Center will not only be improvements for their current tenants but provide a terrific attraction for new business. Having seen their thoughtful renovation plans and the progress already made, I have no doubt the building will make a remarkable contribution to the street scene on Main.”

Local volunteers raise funds to keep Main Street adorned in seasonally appropriate décor, including live flowers street side from spring through fall. Talented musicians perform at multiple local venues regularly, with frequent invitational jam sessions forging new creative collaborations. Warm-weather highlights include monthly Cruise Nights, weekly Farmers Markets, a Street Dance, summer triathlons, and a full range of Park District and Library sponsored events. And notably, its recent sale by the Reilly family to the Park District is enabling the renovation and reopening of iconic Phil’s Beach (featured prominently in the Blues Brothers movie) to the public this summer. Main Street Center currently has a retail space available on the main floor, an office open on the lower level, and a conference room (12-40 people) and meeting room (6-8 people) available for daily rental. Sparking Joy by Letting Go
THE ECO ADVANTAGES FROM THE LOVE OF TIDY

SW Lake Lifestyle | April 2019
Next time you’re looking to make your home lighter and brighter forget about going to a hardware store to decide between incandescent, fluorescent, halogen or LEDs. Let me plug you in here: Talk to Kristyn Ivey. If you’ve seen the Netflix series “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” or read Kondo’s best-selling books on sparking joy and reducing clutter, Ivey has emerged as a leading translator connecting the dots locally, helping interpret, apply and adapt Kondo’s tidying approach. Ivey is Chicagoland’s first certified KonMari Consultant. Her just-published book, “The Tidy Home Joy Journal,” achieved #1 Best Seller status on Amazon in March, and her weekly “Spark Joy” podcast at SparkJoyPodcast.com offers 75+ conversations with experts discussing their perspectives on life focused on what’s most important. Ivey recently met with SW Lake Lifestyle to share why this approach to creating a joy-filled home isn’t just another fad. SWL: HOW DOES MARIE KONDO’S WAY SIMPLIFY SOMEBODY’S LIFE? Kristen Ivey: It really gets you focused on what’s really important; it shifts your attention to what you really value. It’s about mirroring and aligning your home and your possessions with your values, helping you shift to a mindset where you’re being more conscious and aware, and leading with respect, gratitude, and joy when you address your belongings. SWL: HOW DOES THIS ETHOS SUPPORT A MORE “STEPLIGHTLY” APPROACH? KI: It’s important to remember the adage, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,” with reduce being #1. This gets us in tune with our consumption patterns, as we transition to the idea that “less may be more” in certain ways. This process helps us take an inventory of everything that we have, make sure we’re in alignment with what we value, recycle as we go, and reuse things in creative ways which we highly encourage — repurpose things so they can live their best life, so you can live your best life. All that clutter is this thing between you and your ultimate best life. It’s about reducing that “noise,” getting clear about where we’re going, and having nothing in the way of that so you can elevate your talents, your existing successes, and learn a new lifestyle. SWL: FOR SOME OF US LETTING GO OF POSSESSIONS IS NOT A JOY-EVOKING EXPERIENCE; IT CAN LEAD TO AN UNCOMFORTABLE, SOMETIMES GUILT-RIDDEN PLACE. Left: Ivey teaching a "KonMari 101" class at Grayslake Public Library. Above: Marie Kondo (L) with Kristyn Ivey. Below: Ivey’s “Tidy Home Joy Journal” became an Amazon #1 Best Seller in March.
KI: The KonMari method shifts attention to what you are keeping, rather than what you are discarding. It can be uncomfortable for people to focus on just what they need to let go of, especially those sentimental items. Our process CONTINUED >

I love helping people get beyond that and empower them: shift their shopping behaviors, or take better care of their things. I’ve also had clients come to terms with personal relationships while tidying; they’ve let go of toxic relationships, and attracted new and better relationships — finding better partners through the process. KI: I can’t figure out exactly how I lost so much weight, but I know it had something to do with my letting go of the emotions around my previous corporate job and then moving to doing KonMari fulltime. Being more active in client’s homes, and making sure that I’m picking the right nutrition that sparks joy, led me over a year to shed 30 pounds and more importantly feel “lighter.” So I took care of the clutter around my waistline, as well as the clutter in my home… and they’re all connected. I’ve had other clients report that they’ve also lost weight, as well. EDUCATION IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE Educate yourself about the geography, customs and manners of the region you’re visiting. Get to know the culture before you arrive and know which of your actions or standards may not be accepted smoothly. Aborigines, for example, believe that taking their picture “steals their soul.” Tourism provides a positive boost to local people. Attending local events encourages indigenous pride and cultural heritage, enabling many traditions to be preserved. These traditions present a lasting, honest perspective of the destination you visit. ECO-SOUVENIRS Souvenirs are a vital part of every trip, special for their uniqueness and direct mental link to a fabulous vacation memory. As a concerned eco-tourist, do not buy products made from endangered plants or animals, such as ivory, tortoise shell, animal skins and feathers. Purchase souvenirs from local artists to keep cultural traditions alive. Dine in locally-owned restaurants; exploring the gastronomic scenery is just as important as visiting a destination’s main attractions. Through increased awareness and an earnest desire to help protect natural and cultural resources for the good of the planet and for the generations yet to explore, you can trek to the four corners with a positive impact. DID YOU KNOW THAT IN 2016, WORLD PLASTIC PRODUCTION TOTALED AROUND 335 MILLION METRIC TONS, ACCORDING TO THE EARTH DAY NETWORK? Although you probably can’t singlehandedly change the environmental toll of the amount of plastic pollution that comes from that kind of number, we’ve rounded up a few simple ways you can curb your consumption and do your part toward a healthier environment.

The next time you ask for a plastic straw, grab plastic bags at the grocery store or buy a bottle of water on your way to the gym (we’re all guilty of something!), you should also know that roughly half of the annual plastic production’s lifespan ends after just a single use. And most single-use plastics aren’t even making it to landfills, let alone being recycled. Instead, the equivalent of one garbage truck full of plastic is being dumped into the world’s oceans every minute. Curb your single-use plastic consumption with these reusable counterparts.
