ARE, WELL, JUST A LITTLE GOOFY? There are book store shelves full of books on losing weight, exercising more, getting healthy, eating better, saving more (spending less) and communicating better. Self-help gurus fill the airwaves (and auditoriums at big-ticket prices) offering all kinds of advice. I hear there are even apps we can download on our phones to do all of the above and then some. Heck, my watch is jiggling right now reminding me to get up to take a stroll. In this digital age when each of us possesses the ability for continuous improvement, New Year’s Resolutions feel a bit too antiquated. In fact, fault lies with the ancients. Rewind to 4,000 years ago when the practice of New Year’s resolutions got started in Babylonia. The Romans continued things with a distinctive touch by making promises at the start of the year to the god Janus, for whom the month of January is named. (I wonder if toga parties started around this time, too.) Here’s a novel thought: in 2019 why don’t we all just resolve to be kinder and gentler? It was nearly 40 years ago when the late George H.W. Bush uttered this phrase when accepting his party’s presidential nomination. It was good then and seems especially prescient for the times we live in now. Acrimony may rage across the airwaves, on Social Media, in Washington, DC and across the world. Right here,

WORLD TRAVEL IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE EXPANDING AND EVOLVING IN 2019. Where and how you travel is a social marker that identifies you and connects you to the world. INSTAGRAM-ABLE TRAVEL Social Media is rocking our world, and travelers today enjoy the bragging rights of the world’s iconic destinations. No surprise here that Millennials are making trip plans based on photogenic spots to share on Social Media. Bragging rights abound while trekking Chile’s salt flats and lagoons, dune-bashing in the deserts of Dubai or bathing the elephants in the jungles of Thailand. In a hyper-connected world, we also note an opposite trend: escaping from contact with technology and “switching off” mentally. While off-thebeaten-path destinations have been popular for a while now, travelers are now finding attractive those places that are not only difficult to reach, but are wild, remote, and isolated once they arrive. Space and serenity can be found in the emerging destinations of Ethiopia, Antarctica and Iceland. The hottest trend is expedition cruising. Travelers want adventure experiences and more active, in-depth exploration: to Antarctica, remote islands in the South Pacific, exotic African ports, journeys around Iceland, or Tasmania in Australia. The unique Galapagos Islands are high on bucket lists. More than 30 new expedition cruise ships are being built in the next few years. 12

MULTI-GENERATIONAL OR SOLO TRAVEL For the last decade vacationing together with extended families has grown in popularity: grandparents, parents and children, and multi-families with all the cousins! While that will be a trend well into the future, the rise of the solo traveler is here, too. Traveling solo means one can experience the world without having to yield to the tastes, objections or preferences of others. The solo traveler may be seeking to fulfill a personal experience or achieve a dream of accomplishment, such as climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the perfect opportunity to be self-indulgent on the beach, hire a driver for a private tour of the Amalfi coast, find a spiritual connection at a yoga retreat in India, shop the Christmas markets of Germany or take in a rugby game in New Zealand. There are many opportunities for solo travelers today to meet with others. Some of our favorite tour companies and cruise lines offer small group travel geared to likeminded people without the high added cost of a single supplement. Safety is always a concern for traveling solo, so choose destinations wisely; that’s where help from a travel professional makes sense. New Zealand, Norway, Costa Rica and Switzerland are some of the top countries for solo travel.

Exceeding Expectations Since 1950
IMMERSIVE TRAVEL “Living like a local” is continuing to grow while at the same time there is a reason to travel like a “tourist.” Iconic sights such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Great Wall of China and the Mayan ruins are worth the visit, but travelers often want to combine that with co-mingling with locals. What could be more memorable than getting the feel of what it’s like to be an insider while enjoying an experience that is off the beaten track? With the rise in sustainable tourism and a desire to support local communities, travelers will seek experiences such as shopping at markets and feasting on authentic

MAKING 2019 YOUR HEALTHIEST
(CON TI N UED)
OVERHAUL YOUR BELIEF SYSTEM What do you believe about the things that you want? Life doesn’t give you what you want, it gives you what you believe. If what you want to lose weight and believe you can, you will every single time. If you don’t, you won’t. This is your inner work. Only you can do this work, but it is worth it. Start now. Think about what you want, where are your beliefs, and your job is to line them up, because you only get what you believe. TAKE ACTION But first, fast forward five years from now, and everything in your life is 10 out of 10. Would you think, feel and act differently than you do today? Of course, you would. Act from that level of consciousness now. Don’t wait five years. Imagine you’re already there. And then, from that new conscious awareness, take action. Want the secret formula? Well here it is… whatever changes you want to make next year, align your emotions and beliefs, then we take action. It’s your recipe for success every time, and easier than you may think.

Nationally ranked schools are just minutes away. Shopping is very close by. The charm of Long Grove’s historic downtown is just down the road, as is a Metra rail station and access to major highways. Yet, when entering our neighborhood, and especially coming down our driveway, it feels like suddenly we are a million miles away. Over the years we’ve put a lot of time and effort into our outdoor spaces. From every window we enjoy views of the woods, pond and landscaping. It’s truly a sanctuary. We focused on how to make everything more garden-like with colors, variations of plants and seasonal plantings. From inside the home lots of natural light means every room is brighter and more inviting. Outside, we enjoy the color from 30 rose bushes and use our deck and patio regularly. Grilling out is almost a nightly event.

On the lower level the wine cellar is professional grade. There’s a separate refrigeration unit and humidifier for even temperature control to accommodate 3,000 bottles. The local tradesman who built the cellar added a cedar roof, track lighting and a display window that invites you into the space. The adjacent tasting area features lots of wine-related art in a comfortable spot for sharing wine and conversation; it’s a real focal point of the home. Everybody loves the floor plan. It is very open, while boasting tons of closets and storage space. The first floor master is unique in that it isn’t obvious; the door to the suite is not visible from the main living space. Once inside, it feels like a truly private space. Overall there are seven bedrooms, four baths and two half baths. A grand foyer invites guests into the home with stunning architectural details throughout: triple crown moldings, herringbone floors, new floor-to-ceiling windows, skylights and three fireplaces. A remodeled kitchen overlooks a spacious heated sunroom and spectacular family room. This home has great bones, which meant all remodeling decisions simply reflected an evolving lifestyle for raising a family. For example, when addressing the master suite bathroom, out went a giant 1980s tub in favor of a two-person shower and a The great room offers expansive views of the outdoors, anchored by the fireplace's warm glow.

There’s even a hidden door that reveals the workout room, a second kitchen and a game room/TV space. It’s designed as a place where kids can enjoy having their friends come over. Sandra Frampton, Board Chair
The Future Looks Bright DISTRICT 95’S EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION HELPS PUT THE MONEY WHERE THE KIDS NEED IT MOST ARTICLE SANDRA FRAMPTON PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHEN NEILSON PUBLISHER’S NOTE: 15 YEARS AGO WHEN SANDRA FRAMPTON, A BROKER WITH @PROPERTIES, LAUNCHED HER CAREER AS A REALTOR HER GOAL WAS TO HELP FAMILIES IN THE COMMUNITY BUY AND SELL HOMES. She sought to differentiate herself by being well-educated in the business while offering the highest possible level of customer service. Over time, Sandra realized that she could do more for the community. This is her story about a passion for educational excellence in School District 95. We moved to Lake Zurich when I was pregnant with my older son. One of the things that attracted us to this community was the quality of public education. As our two children progressed through grade school, middle school, and now Lake Zurich High School, I responded to a sense that I needed to do more for the community. The District 95 Educational Foundation provides me the perfect opportunity to fulfill my passion for quality education. The District 95 Educational Foundation, where I serve as Board Chair, provides an important funding adjunct to the school district. Our superintendent, Dr. Kaine Osburn, put it this way recently: “Our partnership with the Foundation to maximize the achievement of our mission - to empower every learner to achieve personal excellence - is the perfect expression of our core value of collaboration.”

The Foundation's mission is to raise funds and provide resources for additional innovations that empower every learner to achieve personal excellence. The funds are used in a variety of ways, including:
+ Grants for teacher innovations above the funding the district allows.
+ Resources for special initiatives, such as the LEGO League, Film Festival, Science Fair and Family STEAM Summit.
+ Partnerships with local businesses for high school student internships.
+ Select academic funding for underresourced students.
+ Basic needs for students through Joanie's Closet. A big part of our role as board members is to educate the community on the purpose of the D95 Educational

Foundation.
While some of the programs mentioned here may be familiar to some, not everybody knows where the funds come from in the first place. That’s why we are so focused on raising awareness and money for programs and initiatives that our students may not
otherwise experience. Our biggest fundraiser of the year is the Annual Gala, and this year it’s at Concorde Banquets on March 2. Anybody from the community is invited to attend. We also seek financial support from local businesses by offering a variety of sponsorship opportunities. For more information about the D95 Educational Foundation, as well as ways for community members and businesses to get involved, please visit our website (district95foundation.org).

midday workout. “It really brought my faith back into perspective and showed me that CrossFit isn’t what defines me—it’s Christ and my faith. And that’s why I got the tattoo Galatians 6:14—it really put everything into perspective.” In the midst of preparing for his 2014 competition, Rich became a father for the first time when he and Hillary adopted their now 4-year-old daughter, Lakelyn—an event that had a large impact on his decision to remove himself from individual competition. “Stepping away from the individual side, that had to happen. When I was in individual, I was so fixated on competing at the highest level—which you have to be to be the best in the world at anything,” Rich says. “There was no balance in my life, and I saw that. When we were going to have Lakelyn, I was like, ‘you know what, either my fitness and me competing at that level is going to have to give or me being a dad.’ I wasn’t willing to sacrifice being a dad.” Rich and Hillary, who now have three adopted children: Lakelyn; Trice, whose full name is Richard III; and Harper Violet, Lakelyn’s biological sister, have found some of that seemingly unattainable balance through Rich’s transition to team competitions, which have allowed him more of an opportunity to think about training while he’s training and to not think about training while he isn’t.
