Ancient folks thought that the combined heat of Sirius and the Sun caused midsummer’s swelter. Not counting the Sun, Sirius is the brightest star in the sky. Under the right conditions, it can even be seen with the naked eye during the day. Sirius is one star in a group of stars that form the constellation Canis Major. It’s no surprise, then, that the nickname of this big, bold star is “Dog Star.” The name of the friendly looking pooch on our cover is Mitch, a hardworking soul at the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center (https://www.lakecountyil.gov/2066/Childrens-Advocacy-Center). Mitch does his job under tough circumstances; he’s a comforting presence whenever a child shares his or her story of abuse to authorities. The idea is for a young victim of

We have three active children in sports, scouts, horseback riding and church. I always joke that I can’t go to the grocery store or a school function without chatting with a handful of clients about their animals. In 1996 when I stepped into the charming little hospital with the trademark red front door I knew it would be my forever home. Dr. Fred Rader started Skycrest in 1967, handing the reins to me in 2001. Recently, Skycrest had a major facelift to make clients feel instantly at home. We updated our equipment, adding surgical and dental suites. The support we give to clients is both medical and emotional. We strive to give patients the best outcome possible. (When there are no good options, we just have to kick the heck out of plan B!) Whether it’s a cancerous mass or a cough that leads to heart failure, we always let pet owners know that it takes great courage to make that final decision for a beloved pet. This is the emotional part of our job, not learned in a vet school classroom. You just pray the words and strength will come to you. Our pets are the heart and soul of a family.

A STROLL THROUGH PRACTICALLY ANY NEIGHBORHOOD IN SW LAKE CO. reveals a common scene no matter if it’s on the tree-canopied lanes of Jewel Park in Barrington or along the broad streets of Hawthorn Woods: dogs are out walking their owners. Think about that. With rare exception a dog is in front, straining a bit on its lead, showing patience for the typically sluggish pace of its two-legged companion. Not so with cats: those with the narrowed eyes, sizing up their people or engaging in a bit of languid grooming. Unlike their dog cousins, a cat is expert at conserving energy, saving up for furious bursts of activity thanks to the greatest invention in Cat history – a laser pointer that produces a maddeningly tiny little red dot that’s so much fun to chase thanks to their thoughtful people. My college coach, Don Sammons, is perhaps the most genuinely upbeat person I have ever met, and the lessons he shared about goal setting, hard work and cherishing outcomes will never be forgotten. Don and I remain close, and his positivity and optimism make me a better man. Another mentor is my close friend, Bob Lee, who epitomizes what it means to be a gracious and giving person. We are even working with the City of Chicago to host an open water swim in the Chicago River in 2018, the first of its kind in 110 years. My wife Susan is the center of the operation, and is the glue that holds it together. We met on a commuter train in Barrington in 1980 when we were both just out of school. We married and ended up having four kids, now ages 30 to 20. Believe it or not when it’s time to relax I like to swim. Typically, I’m in area lakes from April – November before heading indoors.
