Spring Hopes Eternal SUN, WARMTH, LIGHT, GREEN, REGENERATION, REBIRTH… SPRING IS PERENNIALLY MY FAVORITE SEASON. For me it’s about becoming immersed in fresh growth and new beginnings… getting back in touch with nature in its regenerative fullness. I’ve grown peppers and plants and a moderately diverse variety of veggies at home for years now, via that time-tested technique called “Spending Big Bucks On Established Plants at The Garden Store and Sticking Them In A Pot.TM” (Bonus Feature: no green thumb required!). This year we’re taking one tentative step closer to nature: starting everything from seed. (“That’s… one small step for man; one giant leap for vegetablekind.”) By the time this issue hits the presses and sprouts online, I’ll either be preparing some of our thriving seedlings to move outdoors, or driving on back to the Garden Store, hat (and wallet) in hand for round two. In January, local conservation group Conserve Lake County merged into Openlands. With their united capacity, they are better equipped to protect open space and expand conservation programs to serve Lake County residents. The popular Conservation@Home program continues this year under Openlands; Lake County property owners can now book their own free on-site consultation, and walk their property with an ecologist to identify conservation-friendly projects that fit their goals and lifestyle. A one-of-a-kind home that set a benchmark-high score with Conservation@Home is featured in this issue; thanks to Joe Barry and Georgia Cawley for opening their “one-with-nature” home to us. (Note: Joe and Georgia are moving on to build a new home totally off-grid on some acreage in Hawaii, restoring Ohia and Koa woodland and starting an organic farm. I’M A HUGE ADVOCATE OF WHAT I CALL “CLEAN EATING”: THE LESS PROCESSED THE FOOD, THE BETTER. This is one of the many reasons I love farmers markets. These local venues are great places to purchase fresh, healthy food directly from the farmer or grower. The benefits of shopping at local farmers markets are many. If locally grown foods haven't yet touched your palette, here are 5 great reasons why they should. 1. Farm fresh: Industrialized food travels on average an estimated 1,500 miles before it reaches your plate. Items you find at our local grocery stores are days and sometimes weeks old before they reach store shelves. Farmers market produce, on the other hand, is often picked and at the market within days, so you know the food is as fresh as you can get outside of growing it yourself. 2. Organic and non-GMO: Many local farmers use organic methods and non-GMO seeds to grow their crops. Most label it as such, so you can be certain you are purchasing chemical-free products. Organic farming is better for the soil, the environment, and your health. 3. Seasonal: Eating seasonally means avoiding “artificial ripening” with gases, or eating a nauseating version of a fruit or vegetable that’s been tampered with. Seasonal eating delivers the most delicious and robust flavors. 4. More nutritious: Fruits and vegetables begin to lose their nutritional value as soon as they’re picked. One look at the vivid colors of produce found at the farmers market, and you’ll be able to tell just how nutritious they are. Compare that to the often bruised produce with gooey stickers all over at the grocery store, and you’ll see that there is no comparison. 5. THE PRISTINE WOODED ENVIRONS OF LONG GROVE FIRST BECKONED TO THE YOUNG JOE BARRY IN 1985, WHEN HE FOUND A 3-ACRE SITE INCLUDING AN OAK AND HICKORY WOODLAND, PART OF THE ORIGINAL “LONG GROVE” OF WOODS FROM WHICH LONG GROVE DERIVED ITS NAME. He knew he’d found the right place to build his “one with nature” home. Barry has a remarkable tale of commitment over decades to the cause of ecologically sound development. As an undergraduate, he took ecology-related courses that later informed his choices in building this first home. In 1986, Barry became involved with the Long Grove Ecology Committee under the leadership of Dr. I. James Young. Barry spearheaded the prairie rescue project at Route 22 and Old McHenry Road. He and other volunteers rescued hundreds of native plants before development of the property and relocated them to prairie restoration projects around the Village, and gathered seeds to ensure their preservation. Barry volunteered at the Long Grove Park District and Reed Turner Woodland, where Barbara Turner became a mentor. Inspired by such activities in his chosen community, Barry restored his own piece of woodland and prairie through the years, joined by Georgia and their daughters. Just about ¾ of an acre is lawn, which they keep chemical-free… safe for the dog and now, grandkids. The rest of the natural landscape manicures itself, with native plants sown from locally collected seeds key to this landscaping. Tom Vanderpoel, noted former director of land restoration at Citizens for Conservation in Barrington, helped with the original landscaping and with the house’s passive solar brick paving and sidewalk. When European Buckthorn invaded the natural woodlands on their property, Barry literally “dug in” to remove it. Each year, when the weather cooperates, Barry and his family do controlled burns with a Fire Department permit. This helps the land restore nutrients to the soil and encourages new native plant growth. As a result, those woodlands now sport a carpet of native wildflowers, which enthusiastically grows back each year. When evaluated by Conserve Lake County for their “Conservation @Home” designation, their score quickly grew into an out-of-the-box benchmark. They needed 100 points to be designated as a “Lake County Conservation home”. Barry fondly recalls how, after documenting 400+ points, they watched a red-tailed hawk come swooping down through the open woodland from its breeding nest. With a smile, the evaluator “stopped counting and called it a day”. Continuing their commitment to renewable energy and environmental stewardship, they installed a five thousand watt grid solar array in May of 2014, ground-mounted at the edge of the CONTINUED >

What you won’t see, unless you know where to look, are the every-day miracles happening at Partners for Progress (PFP) on Milton Road. “Partners for Progress was created from tragedy to a calling,” says Executive Director Diane Helgeland. Years ago, after a family tragedy prompted her then-husband to purchase a run-down horse farm, Diane launched PFP. Today, PFP is nonprofit therapeutic riding barn with 20+ horses serving more than 200 children and adults with physical, mental and emotional disabilities. With their unique 3Q program – Quality of Programs and Quality of Horses = Quality of Life – the therapists identify specific goals for each participant, and the volunteers, horses and instructors work to help participants overcome their challenges to live life to the fullest. Overall, PFP riders have maintained a 79% goal achievement rate for the last six years. How?
