I’VE ALWAYS BEEN A HUGE FAN OF THE YEAR-END HOLIDAY MANIA. Even when it drives me right to the brink of exhaustion, to the point of yelling at the Thanksgiving turkey, “Baste THIS, buddy!” Or to wondering, as snowplow drivers zip PacMan-like down my village’s streets, if their adrenaline rush rivals memories of my childhood days at the county fair, gleefully bouncing my bumper car off railings (and best friends) at full pedal-to-themetal. My newly-dented mailbox would testify, “Yes… yes, they do.” I tend to wax nostalgic. (I’m told this is curable, with Q-tips and ear candling.) I (regretfully) reminisce about that fateful evening of December 3, 1976 at ASU’s Grady Gammage Auditorium, when my student-conducting debut at the ASU Chorale’s Christmas concert resulted in a courageous yet horribly ragged performance of one of legendary British composer Benjamin Britten’s most challenging choral pieces. Note: The following morning, Benjamin Britten died. True story. I heard it on the car radio while driving to our repeat performance the next day. I’ll never know how word crossed the pond so quickly, pre-social media. I’m eternally grateful his obituary omits my role in his demise. As my 11-year-old, fully-clawed cat swats me awake at 5AM to serve her morning meal after I’ve spent another late night compuslaving on the iSomething, I wax nostalgic wondering how much Christmas paper it might take to wrap a cat. But mostly this time of year I enjoy being here in SW Lake County, right in the here and now: listening to great local holiday music, and engaging with a vital community making good things happen as celebrated vividly in this issue: the launch of a modern-yet-classic new Gent’s Place in Deer Park, the delight of a good read and a Dirty Chai Tea Latte, the value of some good year-end financial advice, the advice of a professional decorator with great holiday tips, the close proximity of a spectacular

Sometimes, even without your taking any action, your portfolio might change in ways you hadn’t expected. For example, suppose you wanted your portfolio to contain 60% stocks and 40% bonds and other investments. After a period of rising prices, though, the value of your stocks may have increased so much that they now occupy 65% of your portfolio – which means you may be taking on more risk than you had originally intended. Consequently, you may need to rebalance your portfolio to get back to your original 60% to 40% ratios. (Keep in mind that these figures are just for illustration; everyone’s ideal portfolio mix will depend on their individual situations.) These aren’t the only year-end moves you may want to consider, but they can help you close out 2018 on a positive note. Plus, they can serve as a reminder that you need to be vigilant as you keep working toward your financial goals.

WHEN THE CALENDAR FLIPS TO DECEMBER, WE KNOW IT’S ENDOF-THE-YEAR CRUNCH TIME. Holiday decorating can seem daunting, but doesn’t have to be, with a little thought and planning. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or are just looking to welcome winter with some festivity, decorating your home for the holidays should be fun and satisfying. By applying a few simple tips, your home can feel more festive and be party-ready. In October when stores begin putting out holiday-season décor, I get inspired and select an overall theme for my own home, as well as those I decorate for clients. It’s important to choose a color palette that easily incorporates your existing holiday décor while adding a few new fun touches.

Hereâ€™s my advice on how to take on the three key areas of most homes:

CHRISTMAS TREE Start from the inside and work out. Use solid glass ornaments to line the trunk; this will fill any holes as well as reflect light and make your tree look fuller. (Try using floral wire to attach ornaments; itâ€™s more flexible than hooks.) Think of your tree as a cake; add one layer at a time from the inside out. When done, step back and squint at your tree. (Sure, this may seem strange, but it will help reveal any dark spots that need filling in.)

FIREPLACE MANTLE First, lay a plain garland across the mantle. Second, add height: nestle in candlesticks, trees, snowmen, menorah, Santas, lanterns or nativity figures. Vary your heights, remembering to add items in groups of odd numbers. Third, add ornaments along the garland that will reflect light. Finally, layer ribbon over the top and fill in any holes in the garland.

STAIRCASES Start with plain green garland. Decide first whether to swag your garland or closely follow your railing. I use a beautiful ribbon to tie the garland to the railing; this keeps railings damage-free, and the ribbon becomes part of the design. Add your own touches each year to tie together your theme or color. For example, add pine cones, ornaments, ribbons, floral picks; anything you can wrap a thin floral wire around can attach to your garland. Occasionally take a step back to get a different perspective. 24
