An Early Christmas

or more than a few of us, Christmas came early this year. To be precise, it happened on November 2 at 11:48 pm when the unthinkable happened: The Chicago Cubs won the World Series. It was an event 108 years in the making and certainly worth the wait. Celebrations in SW Lake County erupted spontaneously with tears, hugs, glasses raised, kids banging pots and pans on front steps, backyard fireworks exploding, and church bells pealing.

The holiday season is one perfect for the community. This is also a good time to give back. Barrington Giving Day

he holiday season is for gathering with loved ones, sharing and making wonderful memories, and eating all sorts of delicious food. It's also a season for giving, and for one local charity, an entire day is dedicated to helping the less fortunate over the holidays. Barrington Giving Day is held for families in Barrington School District 220 who need coats, food, warm clothes and much more for the coldest season in Chicagoland. Barrington Giving Day began in 1957 thanks to a group called Church Women United, combining their efforts with the Salvation Army to hand out food, clothes, and toys to those in need. We recently spoke with Executive Director Patricia Karon, who is the charity’s executive director, on her involvement with Barrington Giving Day, and why she is dedicated to this noble cause. “I started volunteering over 40 years ago when my daughter was in Girl Scouts, and I was a troop leader,” says Karon.

Volunteering with Church Women United made such an impact on Karon that in 2005, when the food pantry was to close, she and fellow volunteer Jeanette Muench applied for a 501C3 in 2006 and Barrington Giving Day was born in May 2007. When asked why she so dearly loves running Barrington Giving Day, Karon says, “Helping children is what is very important to me. Without the help of Giving Day, families would not have such a wonderful holiday season. The volunteers who help put the event together are very hardworking. Barrington residents, civic organizations, and businesses come together to help the families.” Also, Karon loves the reward of knowing how much Giving Day helps out families so they can have a wonderful holiday season too. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, December 10. As the holidays are approaching, it is time to begin thinking about the gifts we can find for loved ones. For many individuals, finding items to gift becomes increasingly complicated with every passing year. Below is a simple gift you can make, in a matter of minutes, to give to those difficult to shop for people in your life. MATERIALS: scissors, a white sock, rice, rubber bands, and supplies

to decorate your snowman (such as scrap pieces of fabric, markers, buttons, googly eyes, etc.). PROCEDURE: STEP ONE: Cut the foot portion of the white sock a few centimeters

before the heel portion. Put aside the foot portion you just cut; you will need it to make the snowman’s hat. STEP TWO: Turn the white sock portion that you did not set aside inside out. STEP THREE: Close the heel portion by tightening it with a rubber band. STEP FOUR: Turn the sock right side up. STEP FIVE: Pack the sock with rice. STEP SIX: Use a rubber band to tie the top portion of the sock. You

should now have a sealed sock filled with rice. STEP SEVEN: Place a rubber band around the upper section of

the white sock to form the snowman’s head. You have now finished shaping the snowman’s body. STEP EIGHT: Fold the foot portion of the sock, that you had set

aside, to make the snowman's hat. Place the hat you made on your snowman’s head. STEP NINE: Cut a long rectangular piece of fabric to make a scarf

for your snowman. STEP TEN: Use markers, buttons, googly eyes, etc. to decorate your

snowman’s body, hat, and scarf. TIPS: TIP ONE: Use longer socks to make taller snowmen and smaller

socks to create shorter snowmen. TIP TWO: Use cotton balls to make a snowman doll for a child. TIP THREE: If you do not have rubber bands you can use string

as an alternative.

t is 9:30 on a Saturday night… and I don’t know where my husband is. He might be at Middleton’s or Main Street Outfitters in Wauconda. Or maybe he’s at The Copper Fiddle in Lake Zurich. I kind of lose track. All I know is that he’s not home. And I’m going to tell you a secret; it’s OK with me. My husband, Pat Ryan, drummer for bands Better with Bacon and Gritman and Moran, has been performing since long before we met. It’s his thing. It’s his passion. And it has probably kept us married for 29 years. Drumming brings out the best in Pat. Just ask his fan friends. They say things about him like “nicest guy ever” and “such a funny guy” or even “best drummer I’ve ever seen.” Let me assure you; these are not the first words that come to mind when I describe my husband. “Great dad” or “hardest worker ever,” or even “he’s a little bit grouchy today” are what I might say. But the fun parts of Pat’s

personality bubble up when he’s making music and that spills over into our everyday life. Does this mean that sometimes I miss him on a Saturday night? Sure, but what we get in return more than makes up for it. Of course, some nights I could head out to see him playing in the band. Sometimes I do, and you know, it’s great. Mostly, though, I leave him to it. Because sometimes it’s hard to pay attention to your wife when you’re a rock star… and that’s OK with me, too.
