hanksgiving. It’s been called the most American of holidays. It’s a wonderful tradition with an origin story that dates back to 1621. During the Civil War, President Lincoln sought to use Thanksgiving as a means to unify the nation by fixing the date as the final Thursday in November. Later, President Franklin Roosevelt in 1941 signed a joint resolution of Congress setting the holiday as the fourth Thursday of November. Why the date change? FDR figured an earlier Thanksgiving would provide an economic boost by lengthening the holidays. In those days, Congress working together agreed. No matter the outcome of the elections this November, one thing is certain: we will persevere. The sun will still come up. We’ll do it knowing we have the good fortune of living in a very special place, surrounded by friends, family, colleagues and neighbors. This month the slide toward winter picks up the pace. The lovely cover photo, by renowned Long Grove photographer Tobin Fraley, reminds us of what was, and what is coming. A solitary figure walking in any of the lovely woodland settings in SW Lake County may be lost in thought and reflection. On these pages, a collection of people from SW Lake agreed to share their expressions of gratitude. To all of them, we thank them for they remind us about all that is good. Fall is when eating gets hearty. Our “Hot Spot” focuses on a delightfully warm spot in Lake Zurich -- La Malinche -- offering handcrafted meals by chef Delia Mercado. If the sun is on your mind as the seasons change, travel pro Sue Shimkus, also in Lake Zurich, offers an expert rundown on why Hawaii is always a bucket list destination. One of my goals with SW Lake Lifestyle is to be an unwavering booster for the community. I’m joined in this mission by Helen Oliveri of Hawthorn Woods who tells us in “Parting Thoughts” why she loves living here. My inbox is always open. It is Best for Women to Wait Until After All of Their Pregnancies to Treat Their Vein Disease

Despite the overwhelming prevalence of vein disease, there is a serious lack of understanding about its symptoms and treatment. The devoted physicians at Illinois Vein Specialists recognize the need for raising awareness about vein disease, so we will be dispelling the most common and detrimental myths about its effects and treatment over the next several months.

Treat Vein Disease Before or Between Pregnancies Pregnancy can cause venous hypertension which can lead to a variety of vein-related complications. Over the years, we have treated hundreds of women whose vein disease started after pregnancy. Many of them have said to us, "I was told to wait until after all my pregnancies to get my veins fixed" even though they had varicose veins prior to pregnancy or during their first or second pregnancy. We know now that once treated, the pain, swelling, and discomfort associated with those veins will not reoccur and that, once treated,these varicose veins will disappear from the body, so it makes little sense to wait for treatment. We believe that if you have a family history of varicose veins that it makes sense for women to be screened and treated for Chronic Venous Hypertension (CVH) to prevent them from needless suffering during or after pregnancy. Certainly, if a woman has developed varicose veins during a pregnancy, once the delivery is completed and she has sufficiently recovered, it is good advice to get evaluated and treated before becoming pregnant again.

f the newly-opened La Malinche Bar and Grill strikes a familiar note, it is with good reason. This family-owned Mexican restaurant has moved to its permanent home on Rand Road after the owners previously operated a restaurant on Liberty Street for six years. It is easy to tell that La Malinche is a well-cared-for restaurant. Its vibrant dining room is spotless—except where locals can be seen happily feasting on the free chips and salsa. Speaking of salsa, La Malinche has four to choose from, all of which are prepared from scratch in small batches by Chef Delia Mercado. Especially good is the salsa verde—a sauce so creamy one must question how many devilishly good, fattening ingredients lurk inside. The answer? Only olive oil, jalapeños and fresh garlic produce this seriously killer salsa.

The rest of the menu follows suit, putting fresh ingredients and authenticity center stage. 53 South Rand Rd ◆ 847.550.4174 One of the more exciting choices is the Piña Rellena. A shelledout pineapple is the base of this dish, stuffed to the brim with sautéed shrimp, octopus, fish, jalapeños and colorful peppers. The merriment of flavors is excellent and gives off a coastal vibe. Another good choice is the Molcajete. One of the main ingredients is cactus. It also features chihuahua cheese, scallions, pico de gallo and choice of meat. Best of all, it is served in a hot black bowl made from volcanic stone. Very traditional. “These bowls have been used in Mexico for thousands of years,” Chef Mercado says proudly. “They are used to crush and grind spices, and to prepare salsas and guacamole.”

The use of the stone in this dish keeps the food warm and gives it an excellent presentation. La Malinche offers a lot in the way of fun as well. The bar showcases an extensive list of margaritas and imported beers. One wall is filled with old-school video games, and a pool table is sure to entertain both children and adults. Be sure the fan’s blades rotate clockwise to get the heating effect. Prep A/C and Water Lines: Drain garden hoses and air conditioner pipes and make sure there isn’t water pooled in equipment. Turn off or insulate exterior spigots. Get a Furnace Tune Up: Many utilities offer free annual checkups by qualified technicians but call right away since they get busy when cold weather hits. Some furnace manufacturers and dealers also offer free or discounted inspections. Add Insulation: Check walls, attic and basement to make sure there is sufficient insulation. Insulating pipes can help decrease the chance of freezing, which can be disastrous. Check to see if pipes are warm to the touch. If so, they are good candidates for insulation. Foam insulation pipe sleeves are available at hardware stores or home centers. Cut to size and hold in place with duct tape. Seal Ducts: Studies show 10-30 percent of heated (or cooled)

pproaching Epilogue, I already sensed its whimsical nature with a multitude of wind sculptures dancing on the breeze and f lowers blooming everywhere. Upon entering the quaint building, I was hit with a wall of delicious smells, colors and textures. Being an avid art lover, I was immediately drawn to the well-placed nooks and displays that were clearly put together with care. With so much character and love exuding, I was eager to know the story behind this store. It is hard to believe that Epilogue opened just two years ago. Born of a lifelong love of the arts, owner Rachel Perkal opened this store as a culmination of her experiences with both Long Grove and the art world. She has been very involved with the Long Grove community, first becoming involved in the management of the downtown area. For 10 years, Rachel served the Long Grove Business & Community Partners organization and had a few local businesses herself. In her professional life, even when working with corporations, the arts were always involved somehow. Relationships are one of the elements of Epilogue’s success. Rachel has instilled her passion for their importance into her employees and the framework of her store. Customers are welcomed in like old friends and family, often becoming part of the Epilogue community. Good relationships are also important to her when it comes to the artists whose work she carries. Every item in the store is a work of art that has a story. Rachel must have a connection with the artists to feel excited about selling the art, which will pass on to whoever takes the piece home. Respect and love are embedded in the way Rachel runs her store—another part of what brings her success. Her beliefs align with the ‘old-school’ mindset of customer service is king. There are not many stores that go above and beyond with customer service anymore. At Epilogue they will do things such as offering complimentary gift-wrapping. Each time it will be done with care because it is a ref lection on the store and the person who is giving the gift. Taking pride in the little elements and details is the key. Rachel believes her attitude of gratitude for art and the people who make an effort to support locally-owned

businesses is an essential element of Epilogue's success as well. She truly values facilitating someone finding something that speaks to them and helps to express their spirit. There is an artist named Lizzy James who makes simple and sleek bracelets that can double as a necklace. They come in all kinds of wonderful colors of leather and have silver adornments that can be dressed up or down. Her pieces range from $59-$99. Another great item is the well-known Lampe Berger Scent Diffuser. It is beautifully crafted, and the scents are the amazing aroma you smell as soon as you enter the store. Even better, the fragrances are designed to eliminate offensive odors instead of just masking them. The scent diffusers also help remove the germs in the air, making them ideal for cold and f lu season. The diffusers range from $32-$199. Last, but absolutely not least, are the wondrous wind sculptures made by Lyman Whitaker. He has been sculpting for 40 years, and they are incredibly crafted. They make for a unique and whimsical gift that can be passed down for generations. Lyman’s creations can cost $600-$10,000.

The changing fall weather urges us to stay warm and cozy indoors, making it the perfect time of year for arts and crafts. The next day you'd rather stay inside, learn how to make your own cork board out of repurposed wine corks.

What You’ll Need: • 20 wine corks • 5 x 7 frame or chalkboard • Hot glue gun

• Thumbtacks/photos

Step One: Remove glass from the picture frame, only keeping the backing intact.

Step Two: Place a strip of hot glue onto a wine cork and place it onto the frame backing (make sure the frame is surrounding the backing.) Use your imagination to create a design of wine corks.

Step Three: Continue gluing wine corks onto the frame backing until the full backing is covered.

Step Four: Allow one hour for the glue to dry, then use thumbtacks to decorate the corkboard with photos, mementos, etc.

f you've ever had the good fortune to visit the Hawaiian Islands, you most certainly are grateful for the memories. I have visited all of the islands over the years, and there have been so many wonderful experiences it is hard to choose favorites. They are all so wonderful in their own way. Here are some of my personal highlights:

HAWAII, THE BIG ISLAND The Big Island is quintessential Hawaii. There are the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the Onizuke Center for International Astronomy with stargazing tours of 13,796-foot Mauna Kea, or Panaewa Rainforest Zoo, the world’s only zoo of its kind and home to some truly exotic animals.

MAUI, THE VALLEY ISLE Maui is where natural wonder and Hawaiian sophistication meet. I love the magnificent sunrise on a bike trip that starts at 10,023foot volcano Haleakala. The Road to Hana is an adventure in itself, especially when you know the secret places to stop. An unspoiled tropical oasis filled with flowers and waterfalls, Hana should not just be the end of the road trip, but an overnight at one of my favorite resorts followed by a visit to cascading waterfalls the next day. Whale watching in the winter is great near Lahaina.

OAHU, THE GATHERING PLACE Oahu is where city life melds with paradise. Cosmopolitan Honolulu is filled with upscale shopping and dining, theater and, of 28

course, its most famous beach: Waikiki. On Oahu’s North Shore, there is the Polynesian Cultural Center, music, dance and even lei-making. In southeast Oahu is Hanauma Bay, the sea-filled crater of an ancient volcano protected from rough surf, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. I once saw a magnificent double rainbow from the cliffs of a Ko’olau Golf Course, which is one of the most challenging I ever played.

KAUAI, THE GARDEN ISLAND Kauai is Hawaii’s natural wonder. Mind-boggling, multicolored Waimea Canyon is a hiker’s heaven, with trails running along the canyon rim before dipping down inside its walls. On the east coast, Wailua has horseback-riding tours that last from a few hours to an entire day, with picnics and swims beneath rainforest waterfalls. Northwestern Kauai’s famed Napali Coast— surrounded by 4,000-foot cliffs, caves and waterfalls—is perfect for snorkeling and whale watching. Poipu Beach is famous for its vibrant tropical fish and beautiful beaches.

LANAI, A WORLD AWAY Famed for its historic pineapple groves, Hawaii’s smallest island offers world-class amenities at luxurious resorts, rugged back roads for hiking and 4-wheel drives, and beautiful golf courses. I loved watching acrobatic Spinner Dolphins from Manele Bay. Enjoy the tranquility of an untouched world where there are no traffic lights, no crowds and only 30 miles of paved road.

MOLOKAI, HAWAIIAN BY NATURE Unspoiled and untouched—the chance to live as the locals do— is Molokai today. Home to the highest sea cliffs in the world and the longest continuous fringing reef off the southern coast, enjoy outdoor adventures at Kalaupapa National Park or along one of Hawaii’s biggest white sand beaches.
