New Beginnings I

nnovation. It’s one of those words that means something different to everybody. As summer fades and days become cooler and more colorful, this issue of SW Lake Lifestyle explores some of the innovation that’s happening all around us. Here in SW Lake, friends gather to brew some of the tastiest beers you’ll ever sip. As shown on the cover, Jason Vucic and Phil Castello, along with co-owner Brittany Barth, transformed a former dive bar into a comfortable place with a hipster vibe. Side Lot Brewery–next door to Photo by Stephen Neilson. Wauconda’s renowned Slyce Pizzeria and across the street from Lindy’s—is where innovation fills a pint glass for SW Lakers looking to meet old friends or make new ones. Innovation is, of course, how you get ahead in business. Pete Wodarz of North Barrington had a cathartic moment when studying to be an architect years ago. He realized natural materials and the environment were more to his liking, so he pivoted to landscape architecture and hasn’t looked back as a managing partner of Milieu Landscape Design. With more of a technology bent and hailing from Lake Barrington, 23-year entrepreneur Graham Blus leads start-up company Rovely with a totally different take on social media, especially as a way to help small businesses get the word out. Both Pete and Graham’s stories are in this issue. In Hawthorn Woods Kelli Schulte says she has the best job in the world. She helps people realize their full potential with her upbeat disposition and professional approach to counseling as a life coach. She shares inspiring advice on how to unlock innovative thinking on the back page in “Parting Thoughts.” Finally, you may be wondering “Who’s the new guy at the top of the page?” I recently took over ownership of SW Lake Lifestyle, and am having the time of my life steering this enterprise down a more innovative path. The October issue is our re-launch. In the coming issues, we’ll write the articles, share the stories and shoot the photos that are inspired by you: the residents of SW Lake County. To that end, there are really only two simple goals for SW Lake Lifestyle: • Tell the stories inspired by the people in the wonderful communities we call home in SW Lake. • Help our valued business partners achieve even greater financial success. Backing me in this effort is an incredibly talented team. You can read who they are in the right hand column on this page. You are invited to share your thoughts, suggestions and ideas any time you want by sending me an email. Thanks, and we’ll see you around town.

Varicose Vein Treatment is Just a Cosmetic Fix

Despite the overwhelming prevalence of vein disease, there is a serious lack of understanding about its symptoms and treatment. The devoted physicians at Illinois Vein Specialists recognize the need for raising awareness about vein disease, so we will be dispelling the most common and detrimental myths about its effects and treatment over the next several months.

Vein Treatment Is Vital It is arguable that the most harmful misconception about vein disease is that it is a cosmetic concern rather than a legitimate disease. This misconception lends itself to many of the myths in circulation about vein disease, including the idea that there is no need to seek treatment for problems like varicose or spider veins unless they cause physical pain. Varicose veins are a sign of vascular insufficiency and compromise and can lead to worsening pain and swelling or tired and achy legs. Without treatment, those suffering from varicose veins are likely to experience continuing pain, fatigue, and swelling of the legs and ankles. In more serious situations, patients can develop Edema (an excess of watery fluid collecting in the leg tissue), Deep Vein Thrombosis (blood clots in the leg), and even venous ulcers. DVT is an especially serious symptom. If left undiagnosed, the thrombosis may eventually block the entire vein and endanger the health of the leg. Alternatively, a piece of the blockage, called an embolism, may break off and travel to the lung causing chest pain and difficulty breathing or even threaten life.

Call for an appointment at 847-277-9100, stop by our offices at 22285 Pepper Road (suite 105), Lake Barrington and look at our “brag book,” or visit us online at www.IllinoisVeinSpecialists.com

Seek Relief from a Board Certified Vein Specialist At Illinois Vein Specialists, we care just as much about the medicine and the specialized practice of Phlebology (the treatment of vein and lymphatic disease)as we do our patients. We know that patients come to us most often from satisfied patient referrals, but we encourage you to do your own homework and ask around. In the end, no matter where you live or who you decide to have treat your varicose or spider veins, find someone who focuses only on diagnosing and treating varicose and spider veins — find a Board Certified Venous and Lymphatic physician.

ENTREPRENEUR SWL: WHO MENTORS YOU?

Editor’s Note: Graham Blus, a North Barrington resident, is CEO of start-up company Rovely, LLC, that provides small businesses across the country with a technology-based solution to make stronger social media connections with customers. SW Lake recently talked to Graham about his journey to becoming an entrepreneur at the age of 23.

Graham Blus: My dad. He backed my idea and we have worked together to bring it to life. Beyond him, there have been other people who influenced me to think out of the box. I've had teachers along the way who have encouraged me creatively, which has helped me to have an open mind and think about things creatively. Others that inspire me are other young people who are pursuing their passions, whether in a business or through their art or craft. Several of my film school friends are into interesting projects and we support and try to help each other as we can. SWL: WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER WAS THERE A MOMENT IN TIME WHEN YOU THOUGHT YOU WOULD WANT TO START A BUSINESS?

GB: One of my earliest memories along those lines was making a lemonade stand out of a refrigerator box along the road by our house. We didn’t have a lot of traffic, but it was thrilling when somebody actually did stop and buy something. During a middle school trip to Europe, I discovered a love for photography, and that lead to further pursuit of photography and film in high school. Ultimately, that led me to Tribeca Flashpoint Academy, a Chicago film school, where I collaborated

on projects with classmates and real-world clients. That’s where I found an interest in doing work with clients and brands. SWL: HOW DO YOU KEEP EVERYTHING IN YOUR LIFE IN BALANCE?

I try to eat healthy, work out three to four times a week, get plenty of outdoor time and keep mentally calm. I carve out time to think about the business in a calm, reflective way. SWL: WHY ROVELY? WHAT DOES IT DO? WHAT PROBLEM DOES IT SOLVE?

GB: Businesses spend a lot of time and money developing strategies to communicate and connect with potential customers. These days, customers have a lot of choices in both places to connect with and ways to make that connection. Rovely simplifies that process for both parties—merchant and customer—while customers are in-store. The “Like Us on Facebook” messages are limited and getting a bit stale. Rovely's tablet product encourages customers to connect with any or all ways that a business already interacts—social media, email lists and blogs—in a simple way, while they are enjoying their experience.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE

(CON TI N U ED)

SWL: ROVELY IS A FAMILY ENTERPRISE. HOW IS THAT WORKING?

GB: We are all working together by sharing ideas and business strategies. My dad handles most of the financial and legal stuff, keeping the ship headed forward. My mom helps with the blogs and communication aspects. I do the social media and am the brand ambassador—making connections and informing people about Rovely. At this point, we are now all salesmen as well. We’re proud of being a family enterprise. Keeping it genuine is a big part of who we are.

All-IncLusive Resorts: Changing & Innovating

T

he all-inclusive resort was introduced more than 50 years ago. When they originally debuted, most were known for mediocre buffet food, watered down drinks and hidden charges. Thankfully, times have changed as resorts have innovated. A traditional all-inclusive resort offers three meals daily, all drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), taxes, daily activities, nightly entertainment, non-motorized water sports and your chosen accommodations. With this plan, you’ll know that most of your potential costs are included. It’s a stress-free way of knowing you can put your purse and wallet in an in-room safe and enjoy the resort unconditionally. For example, if you’re staying at a resort where windsurfing or renting a stand-up paddle board costs extra, you may not be inclined to try it. Staying at an all-inclusive resort removes that obstacle. Doing new and exciting activities makes vacationing more fun and memorable.

Many all-inclusive resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean have been transformed into gleaming, luxurious places. Many are outfitted with gourmet restaurants offering a wide variety of choices, including premium liquor and room service at no extra charge. Innovation takes many forms. Dana Innocenti, having just returned from her honeymoon at the all-new Secrets Akumal adults-only resort near the Mayan ruins of Tulum, was pleasantly surprised to see an iPad right at her fingertips. The concierge informed her that she could not only book spa treatments and order extra towels directly to her room, but could also order 24-hour room service without even picking up the phone. In early 2017 (only a four-hour flight from O’Hare), Sandals Montego Bay Resort in Jamaica (adults only) will unveil five stunning over-the-water bungalows on a private off-shore island. The best part is that everything is included: a private outdoor jacuzzi, a shower for two, a hammock hanging above the crystal clear blue water and a glass floor to view marine life. Also in the Caribbean, the luxury boutique resort of Curtain Bluff is a gem. Located on the island of Antigua on a peninsula between white sand beaches, it is a small, quiet and secluded resort for couples and families where personalized service is key. The resort has two restaurants, a special martini bar evening, an afternoon tea complete with snacks, and all cocktails are top-shelf. The activity program includes windsurfing, paddle boarding and water skiing on the resort's

boat. Championship tennis courts are popular with clinics at various times of the year. Additionally, Curtain Bluff has a top-notch spa for pampering while the ocean views are truly breathtaking. One of the all-inclusive resorts and areas that Allie Bieniarz, a lead travel consultant at Lake Zurich Travel, has recently discovered is the Dreams Huatulco on the west coast of Mexico. Huatulco is an unspoiled area that few have discovered. Couples and families alike will enjoy a stay here where most rooms offer views of the ocean and pools. There are five a la carte dinner restaurants to choose from, a large buffet, many bars and a fabulous coffee shop. The activities from morning-to-night offer something for everyone. When it comes down to it, there is always something to do at an all-inclusive resort. Just seek professional advice to find the best one for you. About the Authors: Dana Innocenti and Allie Bieniarz, Lake Zurich Travel lead consultants, along with the rest of the dedicated team, offer a wealth of vacation advice, experience and planning. His interests were evolving to a never-ending palette of colors, shapes and sizes that change with the seasons, move in the breeze and provide respite from a busy world. “I realized it was time to pivot to landscape architecture,” Wodarz recalled recently. “And I’ve never regretted it.” Wodarz, the founder and one of the managing partners of Milieu Landscape Design, works with a variety of clients across the Chicago area to create outdoor spaces for living. Soon after graduating from the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign), Wodarz founded Milieu Design in 1987. Since then, the company has grown into a full-service landscape architecture, design/build and maintenance firm. “Our distinguishing core values are reflected in our landscape design projects,” Wodarz says. The company’s work leverages the natural character of a space through collaborative evaluation, design and construction. Each project is thoughtfully and carefully managed under Wodarz’s expertise, as well as the experience of the in-field technical staff, to assure a client’s complete satisfaction. In all cases, the step-by-step process of transforming an outdoor setting begins with design. “We assess the property, analyze soil, make judgements on plants and groupings that will thrive in the setting and spend time with the clients to hear about the yard of their dreams,” Wodarz says.

Next, Milieu landscape technicians efficiently install turf, plants and other yard components. Maintaining an installation is critical. Clients are provided a care plan to ensure that, as the plants grow and seasons change, the landscape evolves into exactly what the clients envision. “We offer comprehensive maintenance solutions to help a yard continue to look great,” Wodarz says, adding that a maintenance schedule needs to be properly planned and executed throughout the year. In addition to designing, building and maintaining great looking yards, Milieu provides a variety of other services ranging from lighting and irrigation systems, to firewood delivery and snow removal. To keep up to date with current trends, the firm belongs to the Associated Landscape Contractors of America and the Illinois Landscape Contractors of America. Wodarz has worked for some clients for more than 20 years. His services include designing and building outdoor spaces for investment properties or vacation homes out-of-state, as well as maintenance of commercial facilities. Master gardener Laurel Lehman sums it up this way: “Pete meets the needs of his clients, while understanding the overall betterment of both a property and the natural environment. His creativity is unlimited, even for the most challenging project.” To learn more about Milieu Design go to Milieu-Design.com or call 847.465.1160.

FALL YARD CARE TIPS • When the growing season slows down, reduce the height of the grass in your lawn to just under three inches. • Consider aerating your lawn to loosen compaction, making it easier for light, water and nutrients to get to the roots. • Cooler temperatures are less stressful for young trees, giving them time to establish their roots. Fall is the best time to add shrubs and trees. • For plants and trees, prune dead, diseased or damaged limbs, but take care not to thin flowering plants too much since buds for next season are already forming. • Before the ground freezes, lawns should have a final application of fertilizer to help them get through the winter and have nutrients to draw from when winter’s last snow melts in the spring.

Renovate & Refine

Home Automation

Now Available To a Wide Range of Homeowners

ARTICLE JENNY BEIGHTOL

T

he "Internet of Things" is here to stay, and what just a few years back was the start of home automation has become a massive growth industry. Imagine managing your thermostat with your phone or raising and lowering blinds via an app while you lounge at the beach. Want to amuse coworkers by going online to see what your cat is doing? Or see who just rang your doorbell to see if your new Cubs jersey was delivered? It's all possible, thanks to home automation in an era of connected devices. Of course, all of this interconnectivity—mostly via Wi-Fi— raises questions about safety and security at a time when hardly a week goes by without news that some large scale enterprise has been hacked. Security is the top concern for homeowners, and it's why companies, programmers and installation technicians are continually developing innovative security features. Earlier this year, "smart home" displays and product launches were all the rage at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The growing popularity and importance of home automation was 30

revealed as dozens of vendors—established and upstarts—showed off their wares. Since the debut of the industry, consumers have thought that home automation is only something for the wealthy. As more manufacturers enter the space, it has become increasingly clear that automating a home is becoming more accessible to all kinds of home owners.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when considering whether to automate your home: • Start with a programmable thermostat such as Nest. It connects easily to your home network and features some of the most robust security on the market. You'll save money and have fun doing so. • Add iDevices technology from Apple. It's a family of new products, including an iDevices socket, wall switch, dimmer switch and wall outlet that enable users to control their home's lights, outlets and thermostats remotely with Apple devices. • Get an electronic lock for your front door. You'll never know how handy this is until you need it. Plus, it's safer than putting a key under a door mat or losing track of a loaned key that may be floating around the neighborhood. • Also in the security vein, have a few cameras installed at strategic locations to see who's approaching your house and what's happening inside. • Tie all the devices together with a platform that will be your control panel. Some manufacturers are offering the capability to run up to 50 devices through a single platform. • Finally, don't hesitate to call a local home automation expert for help. While it's true that more DIY products come on the market all the time, you'll rest easy knowing that all of these automation devices are securely at work in your home while you're away.

Parting Thoughts WORDS KELLI SCHULTE

B

y the time most of us graduated from high school, we took an average of 3,952 quizzes, tests and exams. From a very early age, we learned there is only one right answer and several wrong answers. It’s no wonder we can freeze in the face of obstacles that limit our innovative thinking. To fight this, here are a few of my favorite innovative thinking strategies to help move from feeling stuck to getting things done.

Go Exploring: Use questions like “What if?” or “What else?” to explore the possibilities. Compare: An innovative snack product–Pringles Potato Chips–was created as a way to solve a packaging issue: broken potato chips. Folks in the food lab took a risk by comparing potato chips to leaves on a tree. When a leaf is dry, it crumbles. When it is moist, it is bendable. Pringle developed a process for shaping and packaging their potato chips while they were still moist to eliminate breakage and to provide a fun, tasty alternative for snacking. Change the View: Look at a situation from different perspectives and viewpoints and make note of what you see. Solicit input from others. What do they see? Combine: Bring different ideas and concepts together in a unique way. Nike’s first running shoe was inspired over breakfast by combining the rubber sole of a track shoe with the grooves of a waffle iron. Change Your Setting: Your conscious mind is only able to process one idea at a time. However, your subconscious can focus on several at a time. Feeling stuck? Take a walk. Exercise. Talk to someone. Go out for coffee. Then, see what ideas start to flow.

The next time you hit an obstacle, consider all the possible ways to respond. Worry less about getting it right or wrong, and consider what you might learn in the process instead. You will be surprised. About the Author: Kelli Schulte likes to say she has the best job on the planet. She is an Emotional Intelligence Coach who helps clients learn how to navigate stress so they reach their goals, achieve balance and enjoy all that life has to offer. Kelli’s experience working as both a consultant with Fortune 100 organizations and coaching students and adults in church ministry makes her uniquely qualified. To learn more, go to EQCoaching.net.
