LIFESTYLE LETTER

Mindful Moments January always feels like a fresh canvas, a quiet promise of possibility after the whirlwind of the holidays. It’s the perfect time to pause, reflect, and set intentions for a healthier, more balanced life. But here’s the truth: wellness isn’t about drastic resolutions or rigid routines, it’s about small, meaningful choices that nurture your mind, body, and soul. In this issue, we explore ways to embrace wellness in every aspect of life. Health is deeply personal, and there’s no one-sizefits-all approach. That’s why we encourage you to experiment, listen to your body, and celebrate progress, no matter how small. Whether it’s a five-minute meditation, a walk outside in crisp winter air, or cooking a nourishing meal, each step is a step toward a fuller, more vibrant life. This January, let’s embrace wellness not as a goal to achieve, but as a way of being a gentle, intentional rhythm that honors who we are and who we hope to become. Here’s to a year of balance, vitality, and self-care that truly sticks.

SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

Combine: • 1 cup wheat flour • 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled • 2 cups oats • 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 2 tablespoons chia seeds • 2/3 cup raisins • Optional: chocolate chips as desired • Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc. Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa. Add this mixture slowly to combine: • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter • 1/2 cup honey • 1 banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.

Quinoa BREAKFAST Bars

This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste, oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious.

1. Cut a banana into 8-10 small slices, around 1/2 inch each. 2. Spread 1/2 tablespoon of peanut butter (or your choice of nut butter) on each banana slice. 3. Drizzle a small amount of melted chocolate chips or caramel over each bite. 4. Freeze for 15-20 minutes and enjoy! Pro tip: A dash of sea salt flakes on top of these can be *chef’s kiss.* These are great to keep on hand in the freezer all weeklong. Once they set, add them to a closed container to keep the bananas from browning.

Late night snack cravings are real! When finding yourself rooting through the cabinets for a sweet fix, these protein cookie dough bites are a great way to curb temptation. This recipe yields around 20 small bites, which can be cut into small squares or rolled into dough balls. Each bite is around 105 calories. If you find the dough is a little too dry, add a dash of milk as needed. Ingredients • 1/4 cup milk • 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder • 1/4 cup maple syrup • 1/4 cup peanut butter (or alternate nut or sunflower butter) • 1 cup almond flour • 1 teaspoon vanilla • Chocolate chips as desired Pro tip: Use mini chocolate chips and for a dash of savory add sea salt flakes on top. Once combined, store the bites in the refrigerator in a covered container to keep them moist.

Protein COOKIE DOUGH Bites

Frozen PEANUT BUTTER Bites

Danger ahead: this snack is amazing. It’s the easiest of the bunch and also satisfies a sweet tooth craving. This can be whipped together in just 5 minutes and makes just a small amount. Feel free to take creative liberty here with your amounts, but if you make it to this recipe, they are around 90 calories per bite.

How Robert Mulvin rebuilt his health and conf idence while still enjoying his Saturday evening Ice Cream ARTICLE BY KYLIE STRAWN-BADGER

18

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS

When people meet Robert Mulvin, owner of All Pro Shade Concepts, they often see the confident business owner, the leader with clear direction, and the man who now radiates health, purpose, and energy. What they don’t always see is the version of Robert who existed before June 2024, the man

“My biggest motivation to keep going is my family and all of my employees. I want to be here for them to help guide them and help them all grow for their entire lives.” who weighed over 300 pounds, felt disconnected from himself, and knew deep down that something had to change. That month became the start of a transformation that would reach far beyond the gym. “I started my fitness journey in June of 2024 because like my personal trainer put it, I had a bone to pick with myself,” Robert says with humor. But the truth behind it was serious: his health, habits, and overall lifestyle had reached a breaking point. Personal development became his foundation, and fitness became the catalyst that reshaped the direction of his life. The changes were dramatic and immediate. “I literally changed most all my habits,” he explains. Fast-food stops were replaced with intentional meals. Sleep schedules were reset. He built his days around workouts, structure, and a routine that supported his goals. While nearly everything shifted, he

kept one sacred tradition, Saturday-night ice cream, specifically the brownie dough flavor from Handel’s. It became his weekly reminder that discipline and enjoyment can coexist, and that a sustainable lifestyle doesn’t require eliminating every joy. As Robert began showing up for himself, everything else began to shift. The weight started coming off, nearly 100 pounds to date, but the physical progress was only part of the story. “My biggest motivation to keep going is my family and all of my employees,” he shares. “I want to be here for them to help guide them and help them all grow for their entire lives.” That purpose became fuel for the days when change felt slow or difficult. Perhaps one of the most powerful changes was how the journey reshaped his confidence. “My fitness journey has improved my life by boosting my confidence personally and professionally,” Robert CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . explains. He found himself more willing to strike up conversations, more comfortable in his own skin, and more capable of tackling challenges. Where selfdoubt once lingered, belief now took root. This improved confidence translated naturally into his role as a business owner. The mental discipline he developed in the gym began to impact his leadership, decision-making, and ability to navigate challenges. He describes the shift clearly: learning to endure discomfort, both physical and mental, taught him resilience. That resilience shows up in the way he leads his company, in how he approaches problem-solving, and in the vision he now holds for the future. And as his own transformation became visible, people around him took notice. Robert found himself inspiring friends, employees, and even acquaintances to begin their own journeys. “I do hope and have been inspiring others to start their fitness journey,” he says. Many have even joined his personal trainer’s coaching program after seeing Robert’s results and hearing his passion for the process. He believes deeply that caring for your health is one of the best things you can do for your life, personally and professionally. With nearly 100 pounds lost and significant muscle gained, Robert is far from finished. His next major goal is to compete in a bodybuilding competition by the time he turns 45, just two years from now. It’s a big challenge, but one he feels ready for. After all, he’s already proven to himself that consistency can change everything. For anyone at the beginning of their own journey, Robert’s advice is simple: don’t give up. “Keep going no matter how hard it gets and how impossible it seems to achieve,” he says. He knows firsthand that progress is often slow, sometimes invisible, and sometimes uncomfortable, but worth it every time. “If I can do it,” he says, “anyone can.” His story is a testament to what happens when determination meets purpose, one habit, one day, and one choice at a time.

letter from the PUBLISHER

Welcome to our Health & Wellness issue, a refreshing way to begin a new year with clarity and purpose. January reminds us that caring for our bodies and minds is one of the most important commitments we can make. As a mom, I know how essential it is to prioritize health not only for ourselves, but for our families who rely on us. In my home, that means staying active, managing stress with grace, and yes, still enjoying time in the kitchen baking something sweet. Wellness is a balance, and it should feel good. In this issue, you’ll discover resources, local experts, and inspiring stories designed to support a well-rounded lifestyle, from fitness and nutrition to mental and emotional well-being. I’m truly excited for what the new year brings: more strength, more balance, and more joy for all of us.

find your fitness outside again Discover how getting outside, locally or up north, can transform your fitness, mindset, and daily health routines.

There’s something about stepping outside in Arizona that instantly shifts your mindset. Maybe it’s the wide-open skies, the golden light, or the way the desert can feel both energizing and grounding at the same time. Whatever the reason, working out under the sun, and sometimes the pines, has become one of the simplest, most accessible ways to boost not only your fitness but your overall well-being. For so many of us, wellness took on a new meaning this past year. Instead of chasing perfection in the gym or feeling the pressure to follow rigid routines, Arizonans are rediscovering movement in its purest form: walking more, hiking local trails, dusting off the bike in the garage, or heading up north for a refreshing change of scenery. Outdoor fitness feels less like another task on the to-do list and more like an intentional way to breathe, reconnect, and reset. And in a state with more sunshine days than almost anywhere else in the country, getting outside isn’t just a perk, it’s one of our most excellent wellness tools. Nature has a way of doing what treadmills can’t. Studies consistently show that moving outdoors can reduce stress, improve mood, sharpen focus, and even support better sleep.

ARTICLE BY KYLIE STRAWN-BADGER

M UST SE E | HEALTH + W ELLN E SS

Add in our dry air, blue skies, and expansive views, and you’ve got a natural environment that makes working out feel surprisingly enjoyable, even for the people who swear they “aren’t outdoorsy.” Plus, Arizona’s variety of landscapes means you can change up your routine whenever you need a new challenge. Short on time? A 20-minute neighborhood walk counts. Want something invigorating? Head to the trails. Craving cooler air? Flagstaff, Sedona, Prescott, Pine, and Payson are all just a drive away.

EASY WAYS TO GET MOVING:

START WITH A WALK. Walking remains one of the most underrated workouts. It’s accessible, joint-friendly, and an easy way to build consistency. Aim for

a mix of neighborhood strolls during the week and a longer “destination walk” on weekends, maybe your favorite downtown area, a local park loop, or a lakeside path. EXPLORE A NEW HIKE. From Usery Mountain to the White Tanks, Sunrise Trail to Tom’s Thumb, you don’t need to be an expert hiker to enjoy the beauty of the desert. Choose trails that match your comfort level and bring plenty of water, especially during warmer months. Hiking challenges both strength and cardio without ever feeling repetitive. DUST OFF THE BIKE. Arizona’s flat paths and scenic routes are practically made for cycling. Whether you’re cruising through neighborhoods, exploring canal paths, or taking a weekend ride on the Rim, biking gives you a fun and efficient way to work your legs and lungs while soaking up fresh air.

ESCAPE UP NORTH. When the Valley heats up, elevation becomes your best friend. Cooler temperatures in northern Arizona make outdoor workouts feel effortless. Try a pine-forest trail, a lakeside jog, or simply a leisurely walk where the air feels a little crisper. Working out outside isn’t just about fitness; it’s about reconnecting with your surroundings, getting intentional with your energy, and remembering that wellness doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do for your health is open the door, step outside, and let Arizona do what it does best.
