Valerie Bianculli | valerie.bianculli@citylifestyle.com

I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community. It's a new year, the holiday season is behind us and as we make it through the rest of the winter season we hope you take a moment this month to come together with the people in your life. Whether it’s close friends and family or your neighborhood and community. “Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community - but it also means loving what is near. In the spirit of loving locally, this issue includes a unique article about Staten Island and the movies that have been filmed here, as well as some DIY projects for Valentine's Day and more! We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month. Thanks for spending some time with us. Our hope is that we inspire you to love just a little extra in this month of February!

Valentine’s Day Sugar Cookies!

Sweet & Simple! Enjoy baking and celebrating the day of love with heart shaped sugar cookies!

IN GR E D IE N T S • • • • • • • • •

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional) Royal icing and sprinkles for decorating

INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.

5. Divide the dough in half, shape each half into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or overnight). 6. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper. 7. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use heartshaped cookie cutters to cut out your cookies. 8. Place the cut-out cookies on the prepared baking sheets, leaving a little space between each.

2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

9. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Keep an eye on them to prevent over-baking.

3. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using) to the butter mixture. Mix until well combined.

10. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix.

11. Once the cookies are completely cooled, decorate them with royal icing and sprinkles. Let the icing set before storing the cookies in an airtight container.

STATEN ISLAND’S Cinematic Gems Map Of Staten Island

EXPLORING THE MOVIES FILMED ON STATEN ISLAND ARTICLE BY BRIGITTE MCLAUGHLIN

M UST SE E | L I FE + C ULTU RE

Staten Island, a borough often overshadowed by its more famous counterparts within the New York City landscape, has quietly emerged as a sought-after location for filmmakers seeking unique and authentic settings. This often-overlooked gem of an island, with its diverse neighborhoods, historic landmarks, and scenic waterfronts, has provided a distinctive backdrop for a variety of films. Let’s embark on a cinematic journey through the history of Staten Island and delve into some of the notable movies that have chosen this vibrant piece of New York City as their stage. One of the most iconic films shot on Staten Island is “The Godfather” (1972), directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola. While the majority of the movie was filmed in various locations, some memorable scenes were captured on the island. The Corleone family’s grand mansion, a focal point in the film, is actually the historic Longfellow House, situated on Emerson Hill in Staten Island. The mansion’s elegant architecture and picturesque surroundings added a touch of opulence to the movie’s portrayal of the powerful mafia family. Fast forward in time, and Staten Island continued to attract filmmakers in search of authentic settings. In 2002, director Spike Lee chose the island as the backdrop for his film “25th Hour.” This gritty drama, starring Edward Norton, explores the last 24 hours of a man’s freedom before he begins serving a seven-year prison sentence. Staten Island’s diverse neighborhoods and urban landscapes provided the perfect canvas for Lee to capture the raw emotions and struggles of the characters, offering a gritty and realistic portrayal of urban life. From classic masterpieces to contemporary blockbusters, Staten Island continues to captivate filmmakers seeking authenticity, diversity, and a unique urban backdrop. For those with a taste for romantic comedies, “The Royal Tenenbaums” (2001), directed by the visionary Wes Anderson, features scenes filmed in Staten Island. The movie, known for its quirky characters and distinctive visual style, utilized Staten Island as a charming and idyllic setting for certain sequences. The borough’s eclectic architecture and unique neighborhoods seamlessly blended with Anderson’s whimsical storytelling, creating a picturesque backdrop for the characters’ eccentric lives. In recent years, Staten Island has also played a prominent role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The 2016 film “Doctor Strange” includes scenes filmed at the Staten Island University Hospital. The borough’s diverse locations allowed the filmmakers to seamlessly integrate real-world settings into the fantastical world of superheroes and sorcery. Staten Island’s modern urban landscape provided a stark contrast to the mystical elements depicted in the film, showcasing the island’s versatility as a filming location. Staten Island’s rich history and distinctive locales have also been prominently featured in the crime drama “A Most Violent Year” (2014), directed by J.C. Chandor. Set in 1981 New York City, the film explores the challenges faced by

an ambitious immigrant striving to protect his business amidst rampant violence and corruption. Staten Island’s gritty and industrial landscapes contributed to the film’s realistic portrayal of a city in turmoil, further establishing the borough as a dynamic and multifaceted backdrop for cinematic storytelling. In addition to Hollywood productions, Staten Island has become a hub for independent filmmakers. The borough’s unique charm and diverse communities have inspired local artists to tell their stories on the big screen. Film festivals like the Staten Island Film Festival provide a platform for emerging filmmakers to showcase their work and celebrate the borough’s cinematic contributions, fostering a vibrant local film community. As we navigate through the cinematic tapestry of movies filmed on Staten Island, it becomes evident that this often underestimated borough has played a crucial role in shaping the visual narrative of various films. From classic masterpieces to contemporary blockbusters, Staten Island continues to captivate filmmakers seeking authenticity, diversity, and a unique urban backdrop. The cinematic legacy of this borough continues to grow, reinforcing Staten Island’s position as a true cinematic gem within the vibrant tapestry of New York City.

Lavender Bath Salt Blend what you need 16 ounces Bokek Dead Sea Salt 20 drops lavender essential oil

what you do In a mixing bowl, add drops of the essential oil to the bath salt and mix well; store in a glass jar. Add 1/3 to 1/2 cup of the scented salts to a bath for a relaxing experience. SeaSalt.com

From-Scratch Pasta

what you need

Yield: 1 pound

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs

what you do 1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. To cut by hand, lightly fold sheets one at a time into thirds and cut to desired thickness. Recipe from MarthaStewart.com.

steps to do: 24

H OW TO | ARTS + C ULTURE

• Grab a wooden bowl, some acrylic paint, and a brush. • Hand paint some paint on one section of the bowl. • Let the first coat dry and paint another two to three coats of paint until you’re happy with the result. • Let the paint fully dry. • I wanted my gold leaf paper to overlap the paint for a layered look, so I took a paint brush and painted some Mod Podge in an overlapping pattern. • Once the Mod Podge gets tacky, use your hand to apply the gold leaf and accompanying wax sheet. • Push the gold leaf onto the tacky glue, then remove the top layer of paper. • Use your fingers to gently push the gold leaf onto the glue a little further. • Next, use the golf leaf brush to smooth over the whole area and gently wipe away any excess gold leaf. Pay extra attention to the edges. • Next, smooth the gold leaf section as much as possible, but don’t worry about any imperfections. The organic look of the gold leaf being imperfect gives the piece character. • Next, work your way to the outer edge. • Once the gold leaf is perfected, gently brush over the leaf with some Mod Podge to seal it to the bowl. • Let it completely dry and enjoy!

TIP #1 YOU CAN STILL HAVE A VARIETY OF HEALTHY AND DELICIOUS FOODS BY PLANNING AND PREPPING YOUR MEALS FOR THE WEEK. • Preparing whole meals or dishes ahead of time saves a lot of time for busy people. • Ingredients required for specific meals can be prepped ahead of time to reduce total cooking time in the kitchen. • Having pre-prepared meals on hand can also reduce portion size and help you reach your nutrition and wellness goals. • Choose microwave and freezer safe containers for proper storage, including BPA-free plastic, flexible silicone or glassware containers. • Example: Choose familiar recipes for tacos, chili or spaghetti in the same week to use all your ground beef or turkey. I brown the ground beef and portion it in freezer bags flattened out for space saving freezing and time-saving cooking. • Pre-cut vegetables can be used for fresh ready-to-eat meals that do not require cooking, like salads and sandwiches or as part of a cooked recipe. Include leftovers in meal planning. • I also cut up ripe fresh fruits and freeze them to use in smoothies instead of throwing them out. • Frozen fruits and vegetables often cost less and last longer than fresh ones. They retain high-quality nutrients because they are frozen immediately after being harvested. • Most frozen vegetables have no additives and preservatives, but some may contain added seasonings, salt, sugar or sauces. Avoid added ingredients by paying attention to the label and ingredient list.

• A list helps limit distractions, keep you on budget, restricts unhealthy impulse purchases and reduces multiple trips for forgotten items. • Buy kitchen staples to have on hand to make quick simple meals like canned tomatoes, tuna fish or salmon, corn, your favorite beans and grains such as rice, quinoa, barley, farro and whole grain pasta. • Plan your menus based on grocery store sales and produce that are in season and add beans for plantbased protein. • Buy extra staples when they are on sale, and don’t overlook the bulk bins to buy just the amount you need. • Buy pre-prepped items in the grocery store to further save time or use the salad bar for small servings.

TIP #4 T RY N OT TO G R O C E RY S H O P W H E N YO U A R E H U N G RY. • Everything looks delicious when you are hungry, and this could lead to unnecessary and unhealthy food purchases. • The additional calories may not be needed, and food could be wasted if not eaten.
