SI CITY LIFESTYLE: HOW DID THE OUTPIN APP COME TO LIFE? ERICA SCHIPANI: The idea came from a problem I was personally experiencing. I am very indecisive. So many times I would be in a fitting room somewhere texting my friends and family members for their opinion on something I was trying on and I wouldn’t get a response from them until it was too late. I decided to send out a market survey to see if this was an issue other people were experiencing as well and realized there was an opportunity. What differentiates Outpin from other apps is the timer feature. There is nothing else on the market that exists in real time. It gives people the ability to receive opinions from other app users and friends.

SI CITY LIFESTYLE: WHAT WAS THE PROCESS LIKE FOR YOU TO DEVELOP THE APP? ERICA SCHIPANI: I launched the app last March on my birthday. I actually tried to learn coding myself but realized it was extremely difficult. I decided to partner with an outside company for designers and developers. CONTINUED >

It’s an outfit opinion tool and a stylist in your back pocket! Once you download the app and sign up, you have the ability to follow your favorite stores. It works with Google Location Services to pull in stores that are in your radius. You can use our search feature to search for specific stores and your friends on the app. Once you upload a photo with an outfit you can share it publicly with everyone on the app and make a decision based on the feedback you receive within the allotted timeframe.

SI CITY LIFESTYLE: WHAT’S YOUR OFFDUTY UNIFORM? ANY BRANDS YOU’RE LOVING THESE DAYS? ERICA SCHIPANI: Off-duty uniform these days is usually leggings, crew socks, a cool Nike sneaker, cropped crewneck and a shacket. My go-to brands lately are Zara, Mango and Amazon!

CITY LIFESTYLE: HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE BEAUTY AND WELLNESS INDUSTRY? SERENA MARIE: I actually wanted to be a mortician at first. I didn’t have the grades for medical school, and to be honest, once I really began to think about embalming people, I didn’t like that idea. So, I thought, alright, let’s work on live people instead! I attended Christine Valmy International School of Esthetics & Cosmetology and then ended up going to the Swedish Institute of Massage Therapy and Allied Sciences.

CITY LIFESTYLE: WHAT WAS THE PROCESS LIKE FOR YOU TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS? SERENA MARIE: Long! I got my degree, and I started working with a plastic surgeon when I was around 20 years old. From there, I moved to Equinox. A lot of stars go there. I began making connections with a lot of celebrities. When Trump SoHo opened, I started working there, and I was there for about seven years. Then, the hotel shut down, and eventually, I was lucky to end up working at the Greenwich Hotel which has a super elite following and a luxury approach. My background allowed me to bring a luxury and wellness feel to Serena Marie Beauty, Body & Skin. I saw an opportunity to bring a TriBeCa vibe to Staten Island. Nothing like this really existed here.

CITY LIFESTYLE: IT SEEMS LIKE THERE’S A MED SPA ON EVERY CORNER THESE DAYS. WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM THE REST? SERENA MARIE: Most of these spas carry certain brands, and it’s for marketing purposes

more than anything else. No one out there is carrying the products I use because I use products that are based on effectiveness, not on brand awareness. The products are what really set us apart. They speak for themselves. Natura Bisse has a cult following as well as Pietro Simone. They have a bit of a high price point but they are very effective and result driven. The products are what allow me to bring high-end services and treatments to everyone. We’ll do facials, and the products show an immediate change. So when people come in, they see the difference right away and love the results.

CITY LIFESTYLE: REALLY? SO THERE’S NO IRRITATION OR RECOVERY PERIOD WITH YOUR SERVICES AND PRODUCTS? SERENA MARIE: I never use reactive skincare lines. The facials and treatments people get here are actually perfect for same-day events like parties or weddings. They get their treatments, and they’re out the door with no downtime.

CITY LIFESTYLE: SO WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN SERVICES? I’VE SEEN VIDEOS OF YOU GIVING FACIALS, BUT I’VE ALSO SEEN YOU WALKING ON PEOPLE’S BACKS. SERENA MARIE: I’m a dual therapist licensed for both massage and esthetics. For example, walking on people’s backs is actually an Ashi Thai massage, and it works the fascia of the muscles, not the bones. A lot of my facial treatments are actually forms of massage to help keep the muscles and skin supple. CONTINUED >

CITY LIFESTYLE: FROM THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN, IT CAN SEEM LIKE THESE TYPES OF TREATMENTS CAN BE CONSIDERED A LUXURY. WOULD YOU SAY YOUR TREATMENTS ARE ON THE HIGHER SPECTRUM AS FAR AS PRICING GOES? SERENA MARIE: I have treatments for all budgets! I believe my pricing is very fair and can accommodate a variety of people. I don’t believe in surprise add-ons. You know what you’re paying for when you come in. You can ask for something extra, or I can suggest something that I think would help your treatment, but nothing is ever a surprise or exorbitant.

CITY LIFESTYLE: THAT’S A BIG DEAL BECAUSE SOME OF THESE PLACES WILL CHARGE YOU FOR EVERY LITTLE THING. SERENA MARIE: Exactly! I don’t want to be a salesperson. I don’t like it. It’s so tacky. I just want to give the customer what they want and provide the best service. Almost everything is included in the treatment cost. If a client asks for CBD cream, let’s say, instead of the one that’s normally used, most places will add an upgrade charge. Are you kidding me? No!

CITY LIFESTYLE: WHAT IS IT LIKE JUGGLING YOUR OWN BUSINESS AND HAVING A HOME LIFE? SERENA MARIE: It’s actually a lot easier than before. I loved working at the Greenwich Hotel and the experience I had there but I knew it was time for me to leave after having a family. Hotel hospitality was difficult for me after having kids. Starting my own business gave me the opportunity to be more flexible and split up my time accordingly.

CITY LIFESTYLE: WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW THAT WE HAVEN’T ALREADY COVERED? SERENA MARIE: It’s so important to me that I make the experience unique. I’ve worked hard to make my treatments available and effective for everyone, from my products to my massages. There’s no cookie cutter approach here. Everyone that comes in has an individualized experience based on their needs and the results they would like to attain. That’s the most important thing.

Within a few years, we were a fully licensed NYC contractor specializing in demolition. Currently, we operate a fleet of trucks servicing the five boroughs (and beyond!) with hundreds of boxes ranging in size from ½ yard all the way thru 40-yard containers. In 2022, we purchased a transfer station in Staten Island, which has allowed us to provide even better service and value to our customers. I’m a very hands-on business owner, I am involved in all the day-to-day operations and am always thinking about how I can make improvements.

We supply containers to residential customers for things like interior renovations, roof replacements, deck renovations, furniture disposal, clean outs, dirt, concrete and other landscaping debris. We also supply containers to developers and contractors for any scale commercial project. We are open 6 days a week and can accommodate anyone’s schedule. CONTINUED >

PHIL TURSI: TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE TRANSFER STATION YOU JUST ACQUIRED. MIKE PERCIBALLI: Sure, last year we acquired the container and transfer station division of Gaeta Green which is now called North Shore Waste Solutions. It’s open to the public so anyone can come and legally dispose of their construction and demolition debris. Also, we are pursuing a green environmental initiative. Staten Island is our home, and we want it to be healthy. We recycle what we can and move most of our garbage out of the facility by rail rather than truck to help reduce emissions.

PHIL TURSI: WHAT KIND OF DEMOLITION WORK DO YOU DO? MIKE PERCIBALLI: We do any kind of residential or commercial demolition. Nothing is too large or too small. One day, we might be taking down a garage, the next could be a full wrecking of a 6 story building followed by an emergency demolition of a collapsed building for the city. It’s always interesting! Sometimes people don’t realize how many steps go into demolishing a structure. We handle all the permitting, expediting, and utility disconnects, as well. We are a one stop shop – Perciballi Industries does the demolition, Perciballi Container Service trucks out the debris to North Shore, our transfer station. This allows us to closely control the process and avoid hiccups that, unfortunately, seem more and more common nowadays.

It was 2 years ago that I resigned from my full-time job and committed to working fully remotely. In those 2 years I have been lucky to be able to do a bit of traveling and see some great destinations while working from WiFi. There are so many little tips and tricks I learned to make flying as seamless as possible! Here are some of my absolute essentials and top picks to make your travel days just a little more luxe. 1. Evian Moisturizing Facial Spray: I LOVE a facial mist. Flying tends to dehydrate skin and this is my absolute favorite facial spray to keep your skin hydrated.

2. Apple Air Tags: No more lost luggage! Pop an Apple Air Tag into your checked in bag so you can track it from your phone 3. Yield Hand Sanitizer: Planes are dirty. Sanitize everything! This one from Yield is my favorite. It smells like a spa and doesn’t dry out your hands 4. AirFly: This is a must! If you want to use your wireless headphones on the plane but still watch a movie, this device plugs into the headphone jack 5. KOVO Hydrating Eye Patches: because again, hydration is key! These are my favorite under eye patches to get rid of dark under eye circles and puffiness 6. Neck Pillow: A neck pillow is always a must for me to get any sort of sleep on the plane - this one is weighted! 7. 8 Rules of Love: I’m a bookworm so having a book on the plane is always a must for me - this is the next one on my list by Jay Shetty 8. Beekeeper’s Naturals Propolis Throat Spray: Getting a sore throat after a flight is pretty standard for me - so I love this throat spray that supports immunity with bee propolis 9.
