I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community. It's a new year, the holiday season is behind us and as we make it through the rest of the winter season we hope you take a moment this month to come together with the people in your life. Whether it’s close friends and family or your neighborhood and community. “Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community - but it also means loving what is near. In the spirit of loving locally, this issue includes some friendly faces and businesses you may have seen around the neighborhood. The theme of love is also not limited to friends, family, significant others and community members… how about showing some love for yourself by taking a spa day? PT: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE DESTRESS YOURSELF? DY: I would say it’s more a massage clinic than a spa. I do a lot of medically based massages as opposed to just “feel-good” massages. My focus is on Lymphatic Drainage, Radio Frequency and Body Contouring. I am a licensed Massage Therapist and I do offer relaxation massages as well such as Swedish, deep tissue and therapeutic massages. Destress Yourself is an overall wellness space.
PT: WHAT SPARKED YOU TO GO ALL-IN AND OPEN UP YOUR OWN BUSINESS DURING THIS CRAZY TIME THAT WE’RE ALL LIVING IN? DY: It was my husband. While I had every excuse not to go for it, he had every solution to those excuses. I guess you could say he’s the fuel, and I’m the driver.
PT: HOW DID YOU GET INTO MASSAGES IN THE FIRST PLACE? DY: So, when I was a child, my mother always asked me to massage her feet. I also played sports in high school, and found myself constantly massaging a teammate’s sore muscles. It’s kind of just always been in my life – to do some kind of touch therapy.
PT: TELL US MORE ABOUT LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE. IT’S LISTED IN OUR FIRST ISSUE IN “BRIGITTE’S FAVORITE THINGS” SECTION, BUT WHAT EXACTLY IS IT? DY: Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is what I specialize in. It’s done by manually removing excess lymphatic fluid from the body. This helps to detox
the body, provide relief, contour and shape. It’s a popular post-op therapy for things like knee surgery, tummy tuck and other body surgeries. There are no needles or equipment involved as everything is done with my hands. MLD is very natural, and in some cases, clients may need a doctor’s approval if the massage is post-operative.
PT: WHAT ELSE CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT IT? IS IT PAINFUL OR RELAXING? WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM THIS KIND OF MASSAGE? DY: It’s not painful at all. A lot of people actually fall asleep during the process. In fact, Lymphatic Drainage actually causes the body to release more serotonin the “feel-good hormone”. As long as a person doesn’t have a contraindication, this service is great for anyone. We all have a lymphatic system and the body’s lymph nodes naturally drain already. When we perform MLD we are simply speeding up the process. The pressure used is light, and the movements are slow rhythmic movements. As far as who can benefit, it’s anyone really. Completely healthy people find the massage relaxing and invigorating. It helps with regularity, which all of us can appreciate. For others, it’s a total therapeutic experience. For example, cancer patients are going through chemo and radiation – all this stuff that is just so toxic to their bodies can receive Manual Lymph Drainage to get rid of the toxins. Manually removing the fluid in the lymph nodes helps remove the toxins in the body faster. I also use this massage on my son. He’s two, and he gets a full lymphatic drainage massage to help with a condition CONTINUED >

called clubfoot. His feet were deformed at birth, and we’ve been using various massage techniques to help with the realignment of his feet as well as blood flow and drainage. It’s worked wonders because due to his clubfeet, his muscles aren’t properly aligned, and the fluid drains more slowly. This massage is also great for everyone during cold and flu season, especially people who suffer from chronic sinus congestion and migraines. We gently massage away the excess lymphatic fluid from that sinus area, removing puffiness, congestion, and pressure that can cause migraines.
PT: SO THIS IS ACTUALLY FOR YOUR HEALTH. IT’S NOT A LUXURY. I FEEL LIKE THAT’S PROBABLY A COMMON MISCONCEPTION. DY: Massage therapy being a luxury is the most common misconception in general. A lot of people suffer from shoulder pain, neck pain, joint issues, muscle problems and a lot of other things that massage therapy can remedy, although it’s just not respected in that way. But when people finally have a massage session done, it changes their lives. I have weekly repeat clients for that reason.
PT: ONE LAST QUESTION ON THIS. HOW OFTEN DO YOU HAVE TO GO? DY: I recommend starting with twice-weekly sessions. Those first few sessions sort of remind your body how to be more effective with drainage. Then, we drop it to once a week, once every two weeks and so on and so forth until your body remembers how to drain the

nodes effectively without any help. The body tends to focus on the organs, so MLD sort of brings the other systems forward from the back burner.
PT: WHAT ACHIEVEMENT IN YOUR BUSINESS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? DY: I’m most proud of helping my clients. I get their feedback, and they say things like “I can breathe better”, “I feel better”, “My congestion is gone”. That kind of thing is what I’m most proud of. That’s what drives me. It’s all about helping them. That’s why I’m passionate about continuing education in my field. The more I learn, the more helpful I can be to my clients. I just want to be a tool for them to be as well and comfortable as possible.
PT: WITH THIS ISSUE BEING FOCUSED ON LOVE AND HELPING OUR COMMUNITY, WHAT DO YOU WANT EVERYONE TO TAKE AWAY FROM THIS EDITORIAL? DY: I hope they’ll walk away from this with the understanding that massage is as much about overall health as it is about relaxation. A better mind body and spirit leads to a better you. Period. I see so many clients with chronic pain, and in a week or two, they’re telling me how much better they feel. I tell my husband all the time, “Don’t give me headaches”. And I think that’s the same kind of thing here. Make an appointment for yourself or an appointment for a loved one and give the gift of feeling good and feeling healthy. That’s what it’s all about.

Oriana LaMarca is not only the designer behind beautiful, curated gemstone arm parties and accessories. She is also known for her philanthropic efforts, such as her November fundraiser with the ECHO foundation.
STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: Tell me a little bit about your bracelet line. How did you begin and what sparked your interest? ORIANA LAMARCA: I grew up working for my family business in the interior design world. I always loved fashion. I came across beaded bracelets back in 2012/2013 and started to make them as a hobby. Little by little I started an Etsy shop, then I took some time off to plan a wedding abroad. Six months after I was married I was diagnosed with Bells Palsy so I was home for 3-4 months. During that time I guess you can say I turned a negative into a positive by diving into my business. In 2016 I set up my website, began having jewelry parties at people’s houses to gain exposure and left my parents’ business to focus on Oriana LaMarca Designs full-time. Three years ago I
went through a divorce and turned that negative into a positive by throwing all of my energy into growing my business, networking, collaborating, and turning it into something viable.
STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: Where do you get your inspiration from? All of your collections seem so perfectly aligned. The colors of the bracelets as well as the accessories you offer for each collection are always so well thought out. ORIANA LAMARCA: I love color. I have over 90 different color gemstones that I work with today and I guess you can say my passion for creating color stories is what really brings my arm parties to life. I design 9 signature collections each inspired by different destinations I’ve been to and the colors that represent that destination. For instance, the Sicilian Chic collection is very much Dolce & Gabbana inspired, my New York collection is a little edgier, my Hamptons collection is a more nautical vibe, St. Barth’s has a pastel color palette, Miami is more brights and neons. STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: I see that you are big into charity work and donations for a great cause. Recently you held a fundraiser in partnership with Staten Island’s ECHO Foundation. Can you tell us more about that and how it came to fruition? ORIANA LAMARCA: The initiative is called Arm Candy for a Cause. It started 7 years ago. I had a woman working for me whose nephew was suffering from a rare brain cancer and the whole situation was heartbreaking. I always felt very blessed in my life and loved the idea of being able to give back. I came up with Arm Candy for a Cause where I basically design a bracelet for a specific cause and the color of the gemstone has a significance or meaning related to the organization as well as the charm. We just held our 7th annual fundraiser in partnership with the ECHO Foundation which helps children and families in need. I always choose a foundation that I have a personal connection with. This year a friend of mine, Eric Eremita who is Staten Island-based, is a friend of some board members at ECHO and he was able to connect me to the organization. This year the bracelet is a marsala jade which is a cranberry color that represents the organization and the charm says HOPE which is to give hope to children and their families during difficult times. Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our five tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
USE R EAL ESTATE W ISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.

It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.
