We know, this Holiday season has been a rough one. On top of recovering from all those Holiday parties, cold and flu season is also among us in full effect. Whether you are looking to stay healthy, reduce your alcohol intake, boost your immunity or just take a break and reset after all that Holiday booze, we have just the thing for you! Since this issue is dedicated to health and wellness, we decided to partner with J’s Homemade Elderberry Syrup to create these delicious mocktails that will not only make you feel your best and give your body the nutrients it needs but delight your taste buds as well! J’s Homemade Elderberry Syrup is a small family-owned business that uses all-natural organic ingredients and raw Connecticut honey to create their delicious elderberry products that will keep you and your family strong and healthy all season long. It was started by a Kindergarten teacher when she wanted to strengthen her baby’s

immune system against the germs that she would be exposed to in the classroom. After scouring the shelves at her local health food store, she realized there was nothing on the market that was truly natural without any funky ingredients. She decided to start brewing small batches in her kitchen and once it was shared with friends and family it became an instant hit. Not only is it packed with antioxidants and organic ingredients, but it also has local honey to sweeten the taste which makes it kid-approved! You can enjoy it on its own by taking one tablespoon a day or you can kick it up a notch and try out these recipes we have curated for you. We developed three craft mocktails that you can make at home that are so delicious you may extend your dry January into a dry 2023! We invite you to test your mixology skills and instead of pouring that glass of wine, opt for one of these beverages. Feeling a little uninspired to get your body moving? We teamed up with Evolve 33 and BK Society to talk a little bit about the services they offer that can help you feel your best this year and hopefully inspire you to get a new routine in motion! Evolve-33 is a private training studio where working with clients on their mental and emotional health is just as important as working on their physical health. The motivation behind its vision was to offer a business where mind, body and spirit is the focal point in helping one to develop and evolve into the best version of themselves. Offering an inclusive environment while working with clients of all ages, physical capabilities and varying limitations is what makes Evolve-33 so unique from the rest. Evolve-33 has a dedicated staff of nationally certified personal trainers, nutrition

experts and life coaches that focus on each client’s individual needs to help them achieve their internal and external goals. Whether you are an adult looking to get in the best shape of your life, or trying to develop a powerful mindset - or have a child looking to build confidence, learn good health habits, or develop discipline; the trainers and coaches at Evolve-33 can help. Sessions are offered as 1 on 1 or small group options with flexible scheduling to accommodate morning workouts, busy work schedules, or after-school activities. BK Society Fitness is the new kid on the block. Their functional training builds speed, agility and improves cardiovascular health. The best way to describe functional training is to think about the tasks we do every day and focus on our body movement. Carrying groceries, picking up our children, moving furniture, even something simple like getting up from a chair, our body is moving throughout the day. Functional training focuses on movement that replicates our everyday life making each day easier the stronger we become. The classes and personal training programs are designed and formed with functional training as the foundation at BK Society Fitness. We believe that no matter your fitness level, if you have a body, you have an inner athlete– and BK Society is committed to helping you unleash yours. Going to the gym, even in a class setting can be intimidating, stressful and uncomfortable. When you are immersed in a community it becomes a part of who you are and your everyday life. You value and cherish it and those within it & that’s what BK Society is all about - a fitness community. Founder & Head Coach Eric Martinez alongside Owner, Stella Ganolli make it their main priority to make sure every single person who walks into the facility feels like they’re a part of a team and far from an outcast. ONE STOP BODY SHOP GET YOUR BODY IN OPTIMUM HEALTH WITH DR. MIKE OF OHAP

STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: WHAT IS OHAP? DR. MIKE: OHAP stands for Optimum Health and Performance. We are a spinal rejuvenation center that everyone can benefit from. It’s not just for people that are in pain. We help those who want to get better at their activities of daily living or sport-specific treatment. So, OHAP is basically a “one-stop body shop”.

STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: WHY DID YOU START OHAP? DR. MIKE: I had a lot of broken bones as a kid. Over the years, I felt like the typical model of seeing the doctor or surgeon, taking some pills, and being sent on your way just didn’t work. So helping people get back to their full potential has become a passion for me.

S PA DAY | WEL L N ESS

STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: WHAT’S A COMMON MISCONCEPTION PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT CHIROPRACTORS? DR. MIKE: That once you start going, you have to go forever. Another is that chiropractic care is not safe. That’s just not true. When I help my patients achieve their goals, I want them to stop coming. I want them to go follow their dreams, not make time for appointments that they don’t need anymore. I adjust infants that are two days old to patients that are 95.

STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: I NEVER HEARD OF INFANTS NEEDING A CHIROPRACTOR. CAN YOU ELABORATE ON THAT? DR. MIKE: In many births, doctors use forceps to get the baby out pulling on the neck. What happens is the baby will develop things like torticollis. We examine the baby using gravity to see that their neck has full range of motion. If not, we apply gentle pressure until the baby has full range of motion. Many times, we’ll adjust crying babies, and when that range of motion is restored, they simply stop crying completely. Sometimes babies who have had digestive problems due to subluxations in their necks go to the bathroom right there on the spot. They all seem to give us a show. CONTINUED >

23

STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: SO PEOPLE WITH STOMACH ISSUES MIGHT JUST NEED THEIR SPINE ADJUSTED BY YOU? DR. MIKE: There’s a quote by Hippocrates, “Look well to the spine for the cause of disease.” The brain controls every organ in the body. When there’s a misalignment, that communication is…garbled. We remove those subluxations, which allow the brain to communicate the way it should with the organs. So, we have people who come in not with any pain, but with acid reflux, or asthma, or they’re having problems digesting and are constipated. By removing the subluxation, you allow the brain to talk to the organs the way it should, and everything clears up.

STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: ARE CONSULTATIONS FREE? IT SOUNDS LIKE MORE PEOPLE NEED TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH YOU. DR. MIKE: They are. When patients come in, we talk to them about their issues and our process. We take them on a tour of the office, as well. Being comfortable is the first step to a good treatment plan.

24

S PA DAY | WEL L N ESS

STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: ARE X-RAYS NECESSARY BEFORE TREATMENT? DR. MIKE: If you have car problems, you don’t want the mechanic to

“LOOK WE LL TO THE SPINE FOR THE C AU S E O F D I S E A S E .” – H I P P O C R AT E S

simply rub the hood of your car and say, “I think it’s the alternator.” You want them to get in there and look first. That’s what x-rays do for chiropractors. We may have an idea of what’s going on, but it’s best to be sure before adjusting.

STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF IN YOUR PRACTICE? DR. MIKE: Just how much we help people. We have patients who have been to multiple doctors and surgeons, and they’ve been told that surgery or medication is the only answer. We give them a second chance at life without invasive procedures and medications.

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH AFTER BARRE Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Assuming you are sweaty from leg lifts and flutter kicks, our suggestion is to layer your sweaty tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Since feet are one of the ways the body regulates temperature, you want to go airy with your footwear after a workout. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SATUR DAY Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

Snag some of the key details of the outfits here! 30

SMILE! IT’S WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED ARTICLE BY PHIL TURSI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PLUG NEW YORK

Dr. Joseph Cipriano of Healthy Smiles of Staten Island sits down with Staten Island City Lifestyle to share the secrets of his successful practice.

STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: WHAT KIND OF TREATMENTS ARE OFFERED AT HEALTHY SMILES OF STATEN ISLAND? DR. JOSEPH CIPRIANO: My practice is full service, so I do everything from cleanings to implants, but for the most part, my practice focuses on emergency care and restorative procedures like root canals and dental implants. Those procedures bring me the most satisfaction because I’m able to give my patients life-changing results and that’s important to me.

STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: WHY DO MOST PEOPLE THINK THAT ONLY ORAL SURGEONS PLACE IMPLANTS? DR. JOSEPH CIPRIANO: There was a time when only oral surgeons could place implants, but with technological advancements and training, that’s no longer the case. Highly trained dentists like me can place implants for clients in office rather than seeing an outside surgeon, which is actually beneficial because it saves time from having to visit multiple offices, and we have the end result of what the tooth is actually going to look like in mind from the very beginning.

STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS PAINFUL? DR. JOSEPH CIPRIANO: We use dig-

ital technology to map and create the implants, so there is no pain whatsoever while the procedure is being done, unlike older methods where the gums require cutting. There’s also virtually no discomfort the day after. The very small amount of soreness resolves in about a day. Patients don’t even need to take off from work.

with a meeting. It’s not just about a missing tooth. We have to literally get to the root of the problem – find out what caused the tooth loss in the first place and if it’s even treatable. For example, implants can fail in heavy smokers or uncontrolled diabetics. They would just be throwing money away. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/STAT E N I S L A N D

STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: WHAT IS USUALLY THE BIGGEST CONCERN FOR PEOPLE CONSIDERING DENTAL IMPLANTS? DR. JOSEPH CIPRIANO: The upfront cost. That being said, implants are actually the most cost-effective restoration in the long run. Bridges and dentures may have to be replaced every 10-15 years, but implants should last for a lifetime when installed correctly.

STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: HOW DO YOU ELIMINATE A PATIENT’S “DENTAL ANXIETY”? DR. JOSEPH CIPRIANO: You have to care about your craft and your patients. I take a lot of pride in my skills and in keeping my patients comfortable. Every procedure I do on a patient, I’ve done a thousand times before. I know these procedures by heart, and I stay in constant communication with my patients throughout the procedure to ensure that they’re pain and worry-free.

STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: WHAT’S THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT DENTISTRY? DR. JOSEPH CIPRIANO: That the absence of pain means nothing is wrong. That’s not how the mouth works, and that’s why routine checkups are key. Those checkups are where we catch minor issues before they become full-blown problems.

STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR PRACTICE? DR. JOSEPH CIPRIANO: More than anything else, I’m proud that my patients feel like family. My practice doesn’t run on volume, it runs on retention. I’m very proud that my patients have outcomes that leave them feeling like there’s no better place to seek care and are comfortable enough to refer me to their friends and family.

STATEN ISLAND CITY LIFESTYLE: WHY SHOULD PEOPLE COME TO HEALTHY SMILES? DR. JOSEPH CIPRIANO: I care about my patients. It’s that simple. I’m going to give them my honest opinion on what will give them the best outcome. I don’t overtreat, and I don’t upsell. I work with my patients to reach the best outcome possible without any other motive.
