Letter from the SCL Team

As the year draws to a close, Stamford glows a little brighter. Lights twinkle along Bedford Street, shop windows shimmer with creativity, and the air carries that unmistakable blend of cinnamon, pine, and possibility. December is a month that invites reflection—on where we’ve been, what we’ve built together, and how we want to move forward into a new year.

In Stamford, we know that community doesn’t just happen—it’s created every day by neighbors who care, businesses that give back, and individuals who take the time to show up. Whether you’re volunteering at a holiday drive, attending a local performance, or simply greeting someone on the sidewalk with a smile, you are part of what makes this city so special.

This season reminds us that generosity is contagious. Our local nonprofits are busier than ever ensuring families have what they need, our restaurants and boutiques are crafting experiences worth sharing, and our artists, makers, and dreamers are adding color to every corner of the city. Stamford is a vibrant blend of tradition and innovation—rooted in gratitude, yet always looking ahead.

As you turn these pages, you’ll find stories that celebrate the spirit of the season: people who give, create, and inspire; places that sparkle with holiday magic; and events that bring us together. My hope is that this issue reminds you to pause between the errands and emails to savor the small, magical moments—the laughter and the joy of connection.

From all of us at Stamford CityLifestyle, thank you for being part of this incredible community. May your holidays be filled with warmth, laughter, and love—and may the coming year bring new reasons to celebrate the city we proudly call home.

Happy Holidays, Stamford!

GIVING BACK—ONE ACT OF KINDNESS AT A TIME

Growing up in Stamford shaped the Lovello’s in ways that still define them today. The city’s diversity—and the spirit of its public schools—encouraged them to connect with people from all backgrounds. That early exposure built empathy, understanding, and a lasting sense of community. Youth sports also played a huge role in their upbringing. They provided structure beyond the household and taught them

how to be coached—how to listen, learn, and grow. Sports in Stamford weren’t just about competition; they were about accountability, character, and collaboration. They learned that success isn’t measured only by talent, but by effort and teamwork. Those lessons guide how they approach challenges, relationships, and even their work in the community.

Some of the fondest memories are woven into Stamford itself. “We feel incredibly fortunate to have been raised here, to have stayed, and to have built our lives together in the same city that raised us. Watching Stamford grow and evolve has been inspiring, and being part of that progress has been deeply rewarding.”

They call Stamford “the smallest big city”—close-knit and familiar, yet full of opportunity.

“It’s a place where you can bump into a friend at the beach or on Bedford Street, and feel connected to something bigger. We come from large families and we grew up making full use of everything the city had to offer—its beaches, parks, and golf courses.”

Now, they joke that they pay their taxes with pride, because they see the value in giving back to a community that gave them so much. “It feels good to know that the next generation is benefiting from the same opportunities we had, and maybe even more.”

Maria’s path to volunteerism began with her love of animals. Her first charitable work was with the

“THEY CALL STAMFORD ‘THE

Connecticut Humane Society. Maria expanded her efforts, joining Food Rescue of Fairfield County and helping Stamford Animal Control. Most recently, she added Flower Again—a nonprofit that repurposes event flowers into new bouquets for seniors and hospitals. Each experience deepened her belief that small, personal acts of kindness can create ripples of joy and connection.

Together, they’ve served on several boards, including the Allison Rioux Foundation, the Connecticut Humane Society, the American Cancer Society, and the Downtown Special Services District. Frank says, “Years ago, we made a shared decision: we wanted to make

a difference. And in our own little way, we’ve tried to do just that.”

Maria adds, “What surprises us most is how much joy it brings us. Whether it’s helping a dog find a forever home, delivering food to local agencies, or bringing flowers to a senior who spends most of the day alone—each act fills us with gratitude. Giving back doesn’t feel like an obligation; it feels like a privilege.”

The life lessons were passed down through generations. “Our passion for helping others comes directly from our parents and grandparents. They lived by the belief that community begins with kindness and action. They showed us that lifting others up is far more

powerful than tearing anyone down. Their lessons weren’t lost on us—they became the foundation of how we live our lives.”

One phrase they often return to is: “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.” It’s simple, but it guides everything they do.

What inspires the Lovello’s? “We’re two Stamford natives who chose to stay where our roots run deep. Our goal is simple: to make our parents proud, to be good neighbors, and to leave things just a little better than we found them. If, along the way, we can inspire even one person to join the circle of volunteering—to see how small acts can spark big change—then we’ll know we’ve truly achieved something special.”

HEART OF GIVING

Frank J. Gaudio, President & CEO of The First Bank of Greenwich, has quietly become one of our region’s most dedicated community champions. Whether fostering the next generation of artists, supporting women entrepreneurs, or stepping up during crises, Gaudio’s impact is woven deeply into Greenwich, Stamford, Port Chester, and the surrounding counties. With an Advisory

Board of 480 individuals, The First Bank of Greenwich fosters a strong sense of community for its network of clients.

In 2023, he was the recipient of the prestigious Greenwich Sentinel Award, honoring his “community building spirit” as president of a bank serving multiple branches in Fairfield and Westchester Counties. During the pandemic, under his leadership, The First Bank of Greenwich handled hundreds of PPP (Paycheck Protection Program) loans––not only for its own customers, but also for non-banking members of the community.

Music and the arts are especially close to Gaudio’s heart. In May 2024, Young Artists Philharmonic hosted a gala in his honor, recognizing his longtime support for music education. The evening featured performances by past and present YAP members, and attracted local leaders like State Senator Ryan Fazio, who lauded Gaudio’s “time, talent, energy and commitment to supporting our Greenwich community and beyond.”

“I am passionate about our team at The First Bank of Greenwich and the communities we serve. Nothing brings me more joy than helping to launch a small business, empowering a young family to buy their first home, or encouraging more women to become financially independent. I love what I [get to] do!”

Under Gaudio’s leadership, The First Bank of Greenwich extends its charitable efforts broadly. Its  Charitable Checking program grants quarterly donations to nonprofits holding their operating accounts with the bank; balances opened by supporters of those nonprofits also contribute. The bank also runs a  Women’s Leadership Network , offering workshops, networking, and business-community connections tailored to women entrepreneurs—part of its broader mission to empower small, local businesses.

Other signature efforts include the  Start2Save program and “Greenlight” financial literacy offerings for children and young

people, scholarship awards in each branch location, “Backpack to School” campaigns, food drives, toys for holiday programs, and eco-friendly events like annual paper shredding drives.

In short, Frank Gaudio doesn’t just lead a bank — he leads with heart. His initiatives send a clear message: that business success and community well-being are inseparable. In this December season of giving, his example reminds us all how much one person’s consistent generosity and vision can uplift many.

Hand-Knit for the HOLIDAYS

A hand-knit gift is truly unforgettable and priceless. Instead of purchasing a knit beanie for your loved one, wouldn’t it be extra special to make one yourself?

The holiday season is the perfect time to learn knitting. Not only can you craft one-of-a-kind gifts for your friends and family, but you’ll teach yourself a skill that provides joy beyond the festive season.

In this article, you’ll discover why knitting is more than a craft and how to get started on your crafting journey. You’ll also find some quick and easy knitting projects perfect for holiday gifting.

Embrace and trust the process – you’ll be rewarded in more ways than you think. Happy holidays and happy knitting!

The joys of knitting: A gift that keeps on giving

The Benefits OF KNITTING

Did you know that one of the earliest-discovered knitted artifacts are socks from ancient Egypt?

Knitting has been around long before your granny was making you scarves and hats. It can be found across all different cultures, each with their own traditions. There’s a reason why knitting has been around for centuries and generations.

It’s a stress-buster. The repetitive motions of knitting are effective in calming the mind and body. There’s nothing like centering yourself with a few rows of knitting in the morning, mid-day, or before bed. Some people even like the soothing click-clack of the needles as you work your stitches.

It’s a creative outlet . Who knew you could create so much with some needles and string? The clothes and accessories of your dreams are just a few stitches away. The sense of pride and accomplishment you feel after completing a knitting project is simply unparalleled.

It’s a brain-booster. From counting stitches to following charts and patterns, knitting keeps your mind sharp and engaged. It’s a great way to maintain your cognitive function, which is especially important as you age.

It’s a community-builder. Seek out your local knitting group – your new crafty friends are waiting to meet you! Not only are knitting groups excellent social opportunities, but you’ll meet knitters of all ages and experience levels from whom you can learn new things.

Where Do I Start? / What Should I Knit?

It’s never been easier! There are countless, free resources available for beginners – you just need to know where to look.

THE INTERNET

I taught myself how to knit by watching tutorials on YouTube. You can find videos for just about any technique you’ll ever need – even full, step-bystep patterns for sweaters, mittens, and more.

THE LIBRARY

You might be surprised to discover the collection of knitting patterns at your local library, waiting for you to check them out. Head to the circulation desk and ask your librarian where to find them.

THE LOCAL YARN STORE

The experts at your local yarn store will be thrilled to help you get everything you need for your first project! Just tell them you’re a beginner knitter, what you want to knit, and they’ll take care of the rest. (This is exactly what I did.)

These gift knits are fast, simple, and require just a few balls of yarn. Also, these are all easy to find free patterns for:

HATS/BEANIES: MITTENS:

You can knit up a hat in just a few days – you’ll be surprised at how quickly it will fly off your needles! A great chance to play with colorwork stripes and ribbing.

A perfect project for the adventurous beginner! Mittens are small and work up fast if knit with worsted weight wool at a tight gauge.

If you have a bit more time on your hands, you can knit up a beautifully-cozy scarf that a loved one will surely appreciate in the middle of winter. If you’re feeling adventurous, hooded scarves are the perfect coldweather accessory for your fashion-forward loved ones.

SCARVES/HOODS: BANDANAS:

A super quick knit that brings a boho vibe to any outfit – does this sound like a good gift for anyone you know? Bandanas are great for colorwork and practicing lacework and increasing/decreasing stitches.

Holiday Wishes from the SCL Team

INSPIRED BY AFFECTION & GRATITUDE FOR A COMMUNITY WE LOVE

"As we gather this holiday season, may we remember the importance of community—supporting neighbors, caring for our children, and honoring our seniors. By watching over the most vulnerable, we strengthen the bonds that connect us. Wishing you peace, love, and joy."

"As one door closes, another opens. In a world that rushes by, take time to pause, to give thanks, and to celebrate the beauty in every small, quiet moment."

"Warmest wishes for a happy, peaceful holiday season and 2026. Remember, beauty is all around us:  Admire, appreciate, discover, absorb, share, and create it!"

"I hope everyone can find good food, good company, lots of laughter, and lots of rest this holiday season!"

We gather, not perfectly but completely- scrolling, snacking, reaching, sharing space. The kitchen hums with ordinary beauty. This is what togetherness looks like now.

ORCHESTRA LUMOS' SENSATIONAL AND emotional sounds

Maestro Michael Stern leads a world class orchestra, playing classics old and new.

Stamford-based Orchestra Lumos, under the direction of internationally acclaimed conductor Michael Stern, brings the extraordinary experience of a live orchestra -- playing the world’s greatest music, old and new -- to our doorsteps. Thanks to this world class ensemble, we can witness the sensory delights that connect us with this timeless magic right in our own community.

“The performance of music of any genre -- and certainly of classical music -- is this kind of secret communion from the composer through the people on stage, and then with the audience,” says Stern, who joined Lumos in 2022. “And when you receive it surrounded by other souls who are also experiencing this, it is a profoundly sensory, sensual and deeply human experience. Even when it’s wordless, as it often is, your experience may be completely different from mine, but equal both in validity and in power.”

Stern (whose father, the late violinist Isaac Stern, was one of the great names in 20th Century American classical music), is also quick to note that the live listening experience is an engaged experience, something Lumos underlines with thematic programming, with evenings devoted to Broadway, film scores, Jazz, and America’s 250th birthday. “I don’t believe that listening to music should be a passive experience. If there is through-line to the program, if there’s a way to have a narrative, people will come and listen to the new stuff in the context of the old stuff and vice versa. It creates a dialogue between the stage and the audience, which I think enhances the experience. What you take away is just as vital and just as real as what somebody

else is taking away. But the fact that you’re taking it away together, sitting next to somebody else, that’s the experience.”

Stern has conducted some of the greatest orchestras in the world, from Budapest to Boston and everywhere in between. Consistently, his work displays grace, intensity, and an attention to melody and emotion: He is an eminently intelligent and accessible artist, eager to share his love of music with us. It is an honor to have him here in Stamford. But Stern quickly corrects me: it’s not just Stamford. “We are serving all of Fairfield County. I think music is service. So you have to make your case for art, culture and music in as broad a way as possible. I love this music. I want you to love it too. Some of it will be familiar to you, and some of it will be totally new; but I promise you, if you come with open ears, maybe you’ll know why we love it.”

True, many people associate the word “Lumos” with the Harry Potter series. Stern asserts this was accidental: When the Stamford Orchestra was renamed Orchestra Lumos in 2022, “I didn’t know that it had any connection with Harry Potter. When we started the conversation, we thought, ‘It is light, it is energy.’”

But maybe the Harry Potter meaning isn’t too far off: In the Potter books, “Lumos” is a charm that allows a wand to cast light into darkness. And as we embark on the voyage of discovering the power and grace of classical music, we are bringing an amazing light into our lives, one that can illuminate a magical voyage of emotion, sensation, and imagination.
