LIFESTYLE LETTER

Holiday Letter from Marty & Laurie December, a time of endings and beginnings. Birthing a magazine in the era of digital everything, we weren’t sure what to expect. What we learned is that people like to hold something. Reading a magazine is not unlike listening to classic rock or watching MeTV. It's nostalgic and comforting. We are very grateful for your comments and feedback. We will continue to work hard to be informative and entertaining. In City Scene we highlight our launch party held on a beautiful late September evening at the Whittingham Discovery Center in Mill River Park, a spectacular location for an event. Great food, great music provided by Tangled Vine, and great people made it a sensational evening. We encourage you to patronize our advertisers not simply because they advertise but because they are outstanding in their field. We are grateful for those who took a chance on a new publication to support this endeavor. People like Todd Kosakowski of Sign of the Whale. Todd is a personality larger than life with a generous heart. Nagi Jewelers, a family owned business in Stamford for over fifty years, featuring the finest in designer and estate pieces. Josh Wines, RPM Raceway, Stamford Museum & Nature Center, CycleBar, Compass' Suzette Kraus, Agora Spa, Coldwell Banker's Linda Sorbo, Columbus Park Trattoria and more (the mere mention of Columbus Park makes us hungry.) These are not just ads - they are the best Stamford has to offer. And, our feature - Nikki Glekas… she is a rockstar! Not only does she have great style and taste, but she is the ultimate professional. We highly recommend Nikki for your important event. Discovering interesting people like Harris L. Kligman is what excites us. Take a moment to consider what working in “intelligence” was like throughout the 1960s and 1970s! Such global upheaval. Life experiences that result in dramatic espionage as well as charming children’s stories. What a combination! While you are reading this we are already working on future issues. There’s no end to the incredible stories of amazing people who make up our community. People who love what they do and bring a passion to their work. These are the people we want to share with you. That’s the gift to ourselves and to you, our readers. Have a happy, healthy, beautiful holiday season filled with love, friendship and laughter. Beauty, Humility and Empowerment In a world driven by aesthetics and a desire to look and feel one's best, Greenwich Medical Spa has emerged as a beacon of innovation and excellence. Founded on the principles of deeply personalized care, this renowned establishment has redefined non-surgical facial and body contouring treatments, consistently delivering results that align perfectly with their clients' aspirations. The spa's remarkable success, however, is not solely attributed to its cutting-edge treatments but also to the compassionate vision of its founder, Marria Pooya.

In this exclusive interview, we delve into Marria's humble beginnings and her commitment to giving back and empowering women, shedding light on the heartwarming journey behind Greenwich Medical Spa's rise to the top 1% of medical spas nationwide.

GL: TELL US ABOUT YOUR UPBRINGING? MP: Growing up, I always felt like I was living two lives. I was born in Kabul Afghanistan and came to the US when I was 9 years old. My mother was very strict with us and would not allow us the freedom that most American girls

my age had. We couldn’t hang out with our American friends, go out to the movies or do after school activities. So I had to play a more traditional Afghan role at home and try to assimilate when I was in school. It was very difficult but made me stronger.

GL: COULD YOU SHARE WITH US THE MOST SIGNIFICANT LESSON YOU ACQUIRED DURING YOUR UPBRINGING? MP: Coming from my particular background and being a girl, I encountered differential treatment throughout my early years. I was frequently told that I couldn't pursue certain endeavors simply because of my gender. I often heard criticisms about being too loud or asking too many questions. As a result, I had to continuously advocate for myself to attain my goals in the face of such gender-based obstacles. What I learned was that labels don’t mean anything. Treat people the way you want to be treated.

GL: WHAT ARE SOME JOBS YOU HELD WHILE GROWING UP? MP: After college, I was a financial analyst for an investment bank on Wall Street, I was also the Director of product development and marketing for a color cosmetic line, where I helped develop, brand and launch two color cosmetic lines nationally and internationally.

there wasn’t a medspa in every corner of the street, like we have today. We had to educate the customer that we are actually a medical practice that is set in a spa like environment.

GL: WHAT WERE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU FACED DURING THE INITIAL YEARS OF YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY? MP: A big challenge was managing our costs. This business has very high overhead as we hire professionals such as medical doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants to perform our services, in addition, the lasers we use are very expensive. So in order to succeed, I needed to be resourceful and efficient. And, managing our employees was definitely a challenge. My background was on wall street and product development. I didn't have managerial experience and really didn't know how to coach and engage our employees in the beginning. I thought, like wall street, you just pay them well and they will do what you ask them to do. I learned that treating people the way you want to be treated applies to business as well as personal relationships.

“We want to continue to support local charities and women’s organizations that align with our mission so we can continue to make an impact in our communities.”

GL: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START A MED SPA? MP: Having our second child and realizing I cannot be a stay at home mom, I have always loved the beauty industry, and covered them as an analyst on Wall Street. So I bought a Radiance Medspa Franchise 18 years ago. I was the 8th franchisee at that time. Radiance Medspa Group had a great story/vision at that time, however Radiance did not have the experience to carry out that vision as they did not have any operating stores. I got out of our franchise agreement and changed our name from Radiance Medspa to Greenwich Medical Spa.

GL: WHAT WERE SOME OBSTACLES YOU ENCOUNTERED? MP: In the beginning it was definitely educating the market about what is a “medspa”. 18 Years ago,

GL: TELL US ABOUT YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH GIRLS WITH IMPACT (GWI)?

MP: Our goal has always been to empower women to become strong and independent in all areas of their lives. That is why we have aligned with Girls with Impact. GWI is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to empowering young girls through entrepreneurship and leadership training. We have helped raise funds for 5 scholarships so far this year to help change the future of young women like Shain, who graduated this year and Amhya who recently entered the program. We want to continue to support local charities and women’s organizations that align with our mission so we can continue to make an impact in our communities. Approaching leadership and team building effectively requires a combination of skills, strategies, and a genuine commitment to promoting a positive and productive work environment. One of our goals is to create a GMS Scholarship to help support younger women to fulfill their educational dreams.

The Wordman by Harris L. Kligman A DELIGHTFUL TALE FOR CHILDREN ABOUT THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ALL THE WORDS.

This is the third children’s book penned by Kligman. He also has eleven espionage novels published. Those two genres would appear to be at opposite ends of the writing spectrum, but not when you look at the life of Harris L. Kligman. Growing up during WWII, the son of Russian immigrants, Harris played soldier and cowboy. His parents instilled two important qualities – always give back and always stay calm. His parents worked hard for the American dream. Harris honored their hard work by graduating with a degree in finance. He joined the Army Reserve and trained as an officer and completed a Master’s degree in Business Administration. He worked for a commodities company while still in the reserves and that’s where he was recruited as an intelligence officer. His keen mind, calm demeanor and language skills – he is fluent in French, Korean, Spanish, Yiddish and English, made him an ideal choice.

Harris, Rob and Nancy Kligman

Harris spent the next twenty years doing “what needed to be done” to protect the American way of life. By this time Harris was married with two young sons. His work often took him to distant lands – Suriname, Caracas, India, Cambodia, Laos, Venezuela and more for extended periods of time. His wife Nancy, a strong and supportive spouse, held down the fort at home. This was 1959 – 1979, a very tumultuous time in our history - the Vietnam War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Cold War, and the nuclear and space races. His two sons missed their dad on these extended trips and Harris missed them. He would often write stories for them while flying from one stop to another, sometimes in small planes flown by questionable pilots that scared Harris more than the job. He was engaged in a world that most of us only experience in the movies. The characters and participants in these missions were colorful, a little crazy and often, downright dangerous. This was a challenging time for all of them. So, when Covid hit, Harris’ son, Rob, suggested he write some of his stories. And, so it began. What developed was a family effort between Rob, Harris and Nancy to publish, promote, and create a voice for all of these amazing stories. What was once a difficult time was now a source of great joy. Nancy refers to Rob as her best friend. The espionage books are based in part on many of the people Harris knew back then. The children’s books come from those long plane rides thinking about his sons. (His other son, Marc, lives in Las Vegas but also contributes as he can.) It’s become a family business built on love, respect, listening and one man’s ability to let the words pour out of him. We are all storytellers and words truly do matter. The Wordsman is a great gift idea. Visit HarrisLKligman.com or you can order on Amazon.

Personal Style George Boyce ARTICLE BY SARAH BAMFORD @HYBRIDMEDIACOMM

AGE : 54 OCCUPATION: Owner & Operator of State Farm George Boyce Insurance Agency WHAT DOES STYLE MEAN TO YOU AND HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR STYLE? I define style as a way of being true to oneself. How one carries themselves, interacts with others, the community around them both personally and professionally. For me style is having a high level of integrity along with being intentional about what I say and do. My personal style is neat, well-groomed and professionally dressed. Details are important, a great fit and quality material makes the look complete. My style defines me on so many levels!

HOLIDAY TIME IS ALL ABOUT GIVING, WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED TO GIVE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON? During the holiday I really enjoy spending time with my wife Cathy, daughter Calyssa, and son George III. As a family we share our blessings by giving back to the community. This year I created the first annual “Toys for Tots Drive” and “Holiday Mixer” for the 100 Black Men of Stamford. The event is designed to bring our chapter members and supporters together to raise funds for families in need. Philanthropy is very important. Holiday time is also a great time for reflection and planning for the future. Boyce is a board member of the Stamford Downtown Special Services District; Board Member & Co-Chair of the Mill River Park, Member of the 100 Black Men of Stamford; past President of the Urban League of Stamford Young Professionals. He was also involved in the National Black MBA Westchester-Greater Connecticut Chapter where he served as chair of the Entrepreneurship Committee and is the present Chair of the Membership Committee. Additionally, Boyce is affiliated with the National Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA), National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA). You might see him as Auctioneer at fundraisers for Mill River Park, Children Learning Centers, and the Avon.

The Nikki Glekas WOW Factor ARTICLE BY LAURIE A. GUZDA

THREE PILLARS OF SERVICE: EVENTS, C AT E R I N G , A N D L I F E S T Y L E

People who absolutely love what they do are the best kind of people. Meet Nikki Glekas. Nikki breathes creativity and hospitality. She has been referred to as the Mediterranean Martha Stewart. But, unlike Martha, Nikki will personally attend to your event whenever possible. She is extremely hands on and will move mountains to ensure your event exceeds all expectations – the heart and soul of authentic hospitality. Nikki provides three pillars of service: events, catering, and lifestyle. This is what sets her apart from the competition. She can manage it all. Nikki can create something exceptional based on your budget, number of guests and purpose for celebrating. For those who think their dinner party too small for a caterer, you might want to think again. Imagine how much more pleasurable it is for you to actually enjoy your company.

WE ASKED NIKKI WHY SHE LOVES WHAT SHE DOES SO MUCH? "I started Nikki's Modern Mediterranean to show folks how to make easy, delicious Mediterranean-style dishes for your family, and entertain around your table any and every day of the year. The life of cooking and entertaining began for me when I was growing up in my large Greek family, and continues to this day in my highly successful catering and events business. I knew it was time to create and build this business when friends started asking me for the recipes and entertaining secrets I’d become known for over the years." Nikki provides recipes, entertaining and decorating tips through her E-Newsletter, videos, social media and appearances. Years of experience makes Nikki an expert on entertaining. Whatever your party challenges, Nikki has some great ways to add WOW to your event.

S EASON A L SE T U P S | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

OOPS, YOU’VE INVITED MORE PEOPLE THAN PLANNED AND NOW YOUR SPACE IS TOO SMALL TO ACCOMMODATE A SIT DOWN DINNER. WHAT TO DO? Instead of squishing people in too closely I like to set up food stations so people can mingle, eat, and enjoy. I set food around the perimeter off the room and have a bar that’s easy to access. I’ll also set up a grazing table that is positioned in the center of the action. I set the grazing table with a wide variety of food and a real showstopper centerpiece like a cheese cake - a 3 tier cake I make out of delicious cheeses. This way people can approach it from all sides and nibble while they talk.

MEMO: THE BOSS DOESN’T WANT EMPLOYEES BEING OVER-SERVED AND THEN DRIVING HOME. HMMMMM, HOW TO MANAGE ALCOHOL INTAKE AT AN OFFICE PARTY?

3-tiered cake of cheese When life gives you lemons... make it part of your decor.

When people are focused on a fun activity they don’t drink as much. This is why I recommend fun activities at parties like bowling or a golf simulator. When everyone is concentrating on winning and having fun, they’re less apt to be partying hard with their colleagues. Also, organized activities are a fun way to socialize with people you work with but might not know very well.

I LOVE FOR TO GIVE MY GUESTS A LITTLE SOMETHING-SOMETHING TO TAKE HOME BUT I'M NEVER SURE WHAT TO GIVE AS A PARTY FAVOR. People love personalized items they can eat or share. Cookies, splits of champagne, or fun gift baggies of Christmas candy are always a hit at a holiday party! Herbs, a small plant or a delicious aromatic candle are great ideas all year round.

“Life of cooking and entertaining began while growing up in my large Greek family, I knew it was time to create this business when friends started asking for the recipes and entertaining

secrets I’d become known for over the years.”

In the summer I turn to my garden for lots of decorations. Flowers, herbs from the herb garden, fresh grasses, and sometimes pretty tree branches with

leaves. If my strawberry plants are blooming, I’ll pluck a lot of berries and flowers to use as garnishes on platters. Sometimes I’ll bring my potted flowers from around the pool and make them the centerpiece of our table indoors. Nature is a gift, I always try to bring the outdoors inside as much as possible. Most companies select a Thursday for their events, it’s towards the end of the week and doesn’t disrupt the weekend when employees are spending time with their families. There are only so many weekends in December so hosting a family holiday party in January stretches out the exciting season, New Year is a great theme! C H A R IT Y:

WELL, IT SEEMS LIKE SEVERAL GUESTS HAVE DIETARY RESTRICTIONS. HOW DO I ADDRESS THIS ISSUE? The answer is to have a variety available. I really like to think of a few appetizers that are both vegan and gluten-free, or dairy-free and nut-free. It actually isn’t too hard to come

Hosting a toy drive or a food drive is always a nice touch. There is a lot of need around the holidays and it’s very thoughtful to think of others and do a collection that will make an immediate difference in your local community.

with delicious food to suit these categories once you get the hang of it. One of my favorite things is watching guests enjoy our food and have an amazing experience. My team and I will do everything we can to accommodate every dietary need so every guest has a wonderful time with plenty to eat and drink!

HOW TO PICK THE BEST THEME? WHAT INSPIRES YOU? My inspiration comes from many places. When planning a big social event my inspiration could come from a client’s favorite color, activity, or hobby. For private events in people’s homes, I start with seasonal fruits and vegetables as inspiration and discuss the host's favorites. I like to carry a signature theme throughout the menu and decor. For example, if I am using fig in the salad, I will make a fig simple syrup

for the signature cocktail and use fresh figs for my tablescape. I love to make the entire event cohesive. Sometimes my tablescape inspirations could come from a specific dish or vintage glassware. The key to creating gorgeous, unique centerpieces is mixing the old and new. Tips for creating the perfect board: • Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first. • Be sure to have enough to fill the space. it is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more. • Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement. • Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.

• Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios and any favorite nut • Grapes, berries, persimmon • Crackers

Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh Rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.

Giving Campaign

2023 34

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

“

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
