Roll out those lazy-hazy-crazy days of summer . . .* You’ll wish that summer could always be here! Summer is the perfect time to launch a bucket list of activities to enjoy and unwind and relax. Some of the best summers are those that reflect a slower pace than at other times of the year. “Those lazy-hazy-crazy days of summer” remind us how refreshing this season may be as we take time to slow down and enjoy the pleasures that remind us of days gone by—truly in a sense of nostalgia. Some of our best times may be spent enjoying a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, taking in an outdoor theater show, eating ice-cream on a hot summer day or simply taking in the night sky with someone we love. In this issue, we want to share some of the happenings around our area this summer and to suggest ways to get out and explore. In addition, as we commemorate the Fourth of July, we shine a light on our local veterans. We have an immeasurable respect for the men and women who have made the selfless decision to serve and protect our nation. We at St. George City Lifestyle want to thank all veterans—those who have served, those serving and all their loved ones. I hope we all enjoy some of the many things our area offers during these hot days of summer as we make memories with those we love. Have a glorious, wondrous summer!

Fun in the Sun Rally Day and KidZday Flying Carpet owner, Tolga Celikkanat, direct importer of fine Turkish handmade oriental rugs, recently sponsored a fundraiser for the benefit of the Salvation Army Ukraine Relief Fund. The Fun in the Sun Rally Day proved a fun time for families while supporting relief for Ukraine. Neil Simon Festival features "Love Letters" Janice Brooks will be back on stage this summer, performing a staged reading of A. R. Gurney’s "Love Letters" opposite Clarence Gilyard, famed American university professor, actor and author who has been featured in movies, television programs and regional theatre since 1980. Gilyard teaches theater at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and spends his summers in Cedar City. Brooks and Gilyard performed "On Golden Pond" together in 2016 at the same festival. Although it may be the second driest state, Utah ranks as one of the top 10 states in surface-acres of boatable waters. I love, love, love creating summer cocktails—and creating one for guests who do not drink alcohol is extra fun. It is so nice to greet guests with a signature drink when they arrive for a summer party as it adds a special celebratory flair to any event! One of the first steps is preparing simple syrup. Once you have that down, there are endless variations on flavorings and ingredient combinations. BASIC SIMPLE SYRUP INGREDIENTS: • 1 cup granulated sugar • 1 cup water METHOD: Combine ingredients in a small saucepan. Heat to just below boiling to allow sugar to dissolve. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature before using. Refrigerate any leftover syrup. VARIATIONS: Jalapeno Ginger—To the basic ingredients add 1 halved jalapeno pepper and 1-inch length of chopped ginger. Follow basic instructions, but strain before using and storing. Vanilla—To the basic ingredients add 1 split vanilla bean. Follow basic instructions. It is not necessary to remove vanilla bean before using or storing. Citrus—To the basic ingredients add thick strips of orange, lemon or lime zest. Avoid using the white pith or your syrup will be bitter. It is not necessary to remove zest before storing. THE COYOTE HOWL INGREDIENTS: • ½ cup lime simple syrup • 1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice • 2 cucumbers, peeled and cut into 1-inch slices • 24 ounces Sprite or 7-Up (diet or regular) • Cucumber and lime slices for garnish

METHOD: Chill serving glasses. Place cucumber slices in a blender with ¼ cup water and puree on high speed until smooth and liquefied. Strain through a fine mesh sieve into a pitcher, pressing hard to extract the juice. Discard the solids. Add remaining ingredients and stir to combine. Pour sipper into ice-filled glasses and garnish with cucumber and lime slices. *12 ounces of vodka may be added, if desired Serves 6 CONTINUED > JULY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . SPICY GRAPEFRUIT CILANTRO SPARKLING COOLER • 4 ounces grapefruit juice • Juice of ½ lime • 2 cilantro sprigs • 4 ounces jalapeno ginger simple syrup • 4 ounces club soda or sparkling water METHOD: Chill serving glasses. Fill cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Place grapefruit juice, lime juice, cilantro sprigs and simple syrup in shaker. Pour ingredients over ice to start the chilling process. Place top on shaker and shake vigorously. Place several ice cubes into serving glasses and strain chilled liquid into glasses. Top with club soda or sparkling water. Garnish with lime and cilantro. Enjoy! *5 ounces of vodka may be added, if desired Serves 2 VANILLA PEACH MOCKTAIL INGREDIENTS: • 2 cups peach nectar • ½ cup vanilla simple syrup • Juice of ½ lemon • 2 ounces of grenadine METHOD: Chill serving glasses. Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Place peach nectar and vanilla syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add lemon juice. Place top on shaker and shake vigorously. Place several ice cubes into serving glasses and strain chilled liquid into glasses. Top with club soda or sparkling water. Using an inverted teaspoon, slowly pour grenadine over the cocktail. Garnish with peach slices and serve. Alternatively, to serve a crowd, the base may be prepared in a pitcher and mocktails mixed to order, adding grenadine and soda to each glass before serving. *8 ounces of vodka and 2 ounces of cherry brandy may be added, if desired Serves 4 Victoria Topham is a professional chef and owner of Petite Feast, a private chef service specializing in small private events and parties. To escape the scorching St. George heat, neighboring Iron County offers three outdoor recreation areas for mountain retreats. With elevations around 10,000 feet and average high temperatures in the upper 70s, all you need is a little sun protection and your desired itinerary for outdoor fun.

CEDAR BREAKS NATIONAL MONUMENT Referred to by some as a “mini Bryce Canyon,” Cedar Breaks is two miles south of Brian Head and offers breathtaking views of natural rock formations and woodlands that attract more than 500,000 visitors annually. Hikers of all abilities will enjoy the paved, Sunset trail, situated along the rim with scenic overlooks. Another favorite is the Alpine Pond trail that leads down to a hidden wooded area. Wildflower enthusiasts can pick up a Wildflower Festival map and watch for the variety of foliage at these higher elevations. For stargazers, Cedar Breaks is an International Dark Sky Park with ranger-guided dark sky events and telescopes to enjoy. Entrance fees are $10 a person or free for National Park annual passholders. BRIAN HEAD TOWN AND RESORT Brian Head offers something for everyone: the hiker, the mountain biker and the adrenaline seeker. Bikers can enjoy more than 200 miles of backcountry and downhill trails accessible through local shuttle companies with

round-trip service. At the resort, bikers can ride the chairlift on weekends to experience exhilarating trails with ups, downs, jumps, bank turns and freestyle elements. To take in the off-highway scenery surrounding Brian Head and the broader Dixie National Forest, Utah ATV Rentals can outfit you with a vehicle and trail maps that include local favorites along the way to the High Mountain Viewpoint, looking into Cedar Breaks National Monument. NAVAJO LAKE Situated approximately 25 miles east of Cedar City atop Cedar Mountain, Navajo Lake offers hiking and mountain bike trails, camping, fishing and water recreation, with boating and swimming among the popular activities. You can rent paddle boards, kayaks and the like from outfitters in Cedar City or nearby Duck Creek to maximize your fun on the lake. Bike or hike portions of the 12-mile Navajo Loop trail, hike the Cascade Falls trail with red rock views or explore the lava beds and caves. On a picturesque March morning, hundreds gathered to mark the arrival of a Gold Star Families Memorial Monument in the heart of downtown St. George. The ceremony to dedicate the memorial at Historic Town Square March 26, 2022, was not intended to erase the pain of Gold Star family members. Nothing could fill the hole in the heart of someone who lost a loved one through military service. Yet the memorial may help facilitate comfort, providing a place to grieve and remember. “Consider this monument a sign of commitment and gratitude from our community to our Gold Star families,” said Mayor Michele Randall during the dedication ceremony. “It is a promise that we will always remember the price their loved ones paid and never ignore the heartbreak Gold Star families endure.” The idea for the monument originated in 2020, after thousands of St. George residents lined city streets to pay tribute to Cooper Mount, a St. George resident and paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division who was killed while on a security patrol in northeastern Syria. “I was amazed at how many people showed up,” remembers Bronwyn Mount, Cooper’s mother. “Driving through the cut from Bloomington to St. George, I saw two men standing on top of the cliff waving flags. And then it got more incredible from there as we drove up Main Street and there were hundreds of people there to support our boy.” In 2020, only one Gold Star families monument existed in Utah—in North Ogden. Jennie Taylor, herself a Gold Star widow, is recognized as the “main driving force” behind that monument, according to the Utah National Guard, and she hoped it would serve as inspiration for other monuments throughout the state. Her late

husband, Brent, served as North Ogden City mayor and as a member of the Utah National Guard. While serving as mayor, and as a military intelligence officer, he was deployed to Afghanistan and killed unexpectedly in 2018. Jon Pike, the previous mayor of St. George, and Randall, a councilwoman at the time, followed Jennie’s lead and formed a fundraising committee in St. George. Donations arrived in quickly from a variety of sources, including businesses, nonprofit organizations and private individuals. Soon, there was enough money to reserve a monument from the Woody Williams Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and to break ground

on the project. Although the supply chain crisis created a delay in the monument reaching St. George, it was worth the wait. Stately situated west of the carousel and between the two grass lawns, the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument is an example of what can happen when a community rallies together to support the families of military veterans. “I feel honored by everyone who has worked so hard to make it possible,” Bronwyn said. “I also love having it close. Cooper is buried in Parowan, and it’s not always easy to make it up there. But I drive past the memorial every day and stop often and think of him and other soldiers and families who have sacrificed.”
