The holidays are here, and as we celebrate the spirit of the season, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child—the smells, the sounds, the sights, the lights and all the holiday festivities. Holiday baking is one tradition passed down from my kitchen to my daughter’s and now my granddaughter’s. Our celebrations are not complete without decorating gingerbread cutouts, frosting sugar cookies and crafting lattice-topped pies to share. This month, we highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer to help spread holiday cheer. I love our community—the lights, the entertaining programs, the students at our various schools who give so generously to food banks and provide dinners to special families. So many organizations provide numerous hours of service at this time of year, especially. Truly, this is a time of joyfulness. Although this season may be beautiful for some, it may be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of the people in our community who need assistance or who are alone. May we all remember to take care of each other, extending grace, empathy and love—and perhaps something from our kitchens! My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace. Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Happy Kwanzaa and Happy New Year!

“My whole vision when I’m producing and directing is it’s just like opening up a live storybook—like a storybook come to life.” –Sheila Bailey The student dancers whirl across the floor, their movements at once supple and controlled, while their instructors call out the steps—one, two, three—and offer corrections. Dozens of girls look on, perched on their marks, waiting to perform their parts. This is the first joint rehearsal for the opening of Act II in Westside Studio’s 2022 performance of “The Nutcracker” ballet. Previously, each group of dancers practiced their respective parts as sugar fairies, angels, snowflakes and more, led by a dedicated instructor. But with showtime approaching, the disparate elements of the show are coming together. Sheila Bailey, founder and director of Westside Studio—one of the longest-running dance studios in St. George—has brought “The Nutcracker,” and her love of the community, to southern Utah for the past 28 years. “There wasn’t a ‘Nutcracker’ established here,” she says. “And then we started little excerpts—and called it ‘Nutcracker Suites’—and did little segments at care centers and parties to entertain the community.” Then, with the help of Bené Arnold, former ballet mistress for the Ballet West dance company in Salt Lake City, Sheila says she finally brought “The Nutcracker” in its entirety to southern Utah. Many different versions of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s 1892 ballet have been staged throughout the years. The version Sheila wanted to preserve was staged by Willam Christensen, founder of Ballet West; he is credited with bringing the complete version of “The Nutcracker” to the United States, as well as to Utah. “What I liked about Willam is he had that childlike view; I wanted to preserve it,” Sheila says. “My whole vision when I’m producing and directing is it’s just like opening up a live storybook—like a storybook come to life.” But the process of preparing for a professional-level performance takes time, organization and commitment. The audition process, which begins late August, requires dancers to submit headshots and demonstrate

proficiency and professionalism. Holding auditions in a professional manner gives the young dancers experience that will boost their confidence when auditioning for other shows in the future, Sheila explains. In fact, the development of the students—both in dance and in life—is a key element of Sheila’s vision for the studio. “I want our kids to know that they can accomplish what they want,” she says. “But they have to get there; it’s not going to be given.” Rehearsals start right after Labor Day, according to Holly Pitcher, director of marketing. “And they work every weekend until showtime in early December. It’s a commitment,” she says. “It’s amazing how quickly they can put on such a huge production in that short of time,” Wyone Orchard, assistant office manager, adds. “These little kids are so amazing,” Holly agrees. “They always pull it off.” Westside Studio’s vision for “The Nutcracker” is to elevate the professionalism of the production and to instill in cast members the professional way of doing things. And that professionalism shows in the quality of the costumes, Sheila says—expensive, high-quality costumes by professional costume designers—and in the sets and props—some hand-painted by a local artist and some acquired from professional dance companies, including Ballet West. Sheila also hires two professional dancers each year for the more technically difficult roles. But the heart of the ballet will always be the children. “You just cannot replace the magic of a child,” Sheila says, “and when you see them executing on that level, I think that’s what takes people by surprise.” Westside Studio’s “The Nutcracker” will be held at the Desert Hills High School theater, 828 E. Memories are part of the perfect brightness of Christmas

As I walked into Steamroller Copies on St. George Boulevard recently, a strange feeling swept over me while waiting for an attendant. Something about that room was familiar, tugging at my memory. As a wave of realization rolled over me, I knew I was standing in a significant place. Though the room seemed much smaller now, I was in fact in the middle of what, more than a half-century ago, was the sales floor of Pickett’s Hardware Store—that mythic space where every December the childhood Christmas dreams of an entire community took shape. I was five and standing in a long line that wound up and down the store aisles, an endless serpentine of brightly dressed humanity: restless kids and impatient parents inching their way past pots and pans and shiny new bikes and wagons and Tonka trucks and Chatty Cathy dolls. I’m tugging Mom’s arm, desperately trying to move things along. But the line crawls as slowly as melting ice on a winter’s morning. I see Santa on a raised platform at the north end. He sits, as if in a cloud, in all his crimson glory. His thundering HO-HO-HO booms through my little chest even from where I stand. It’s enough to keep my hope intact and my will firm. My mind wrestles in an excruciating series of deliberations over the three items I am allowed to petition for, and it comes down to the flaming red fire engine on one side of the aisle, the glossy set of farm animals on the other side, or the glittering silver pair of Roy Rogers six-shooters hanging in their imitation leather holster on the wall. Then, suddenly, the attendant addressed me, jolting me back to the present—the cloud of Christmas memories giving way to the business of the moment. When finished, I lingered in that hallowed space and remembered an entire generation of St. George kids gathered there. It was a magical room for all of us. A place where we could dream and a place where we could share those dreams with someone magnanimous enough to grant them. I’m grateful to my parents for their role in that magic. Because somehow, through some miraculous formula, I knew I could count on that flaming red fire engine or that glossy set of farm animals or the glittering silver Roy Rogers six-shooters to appear under our tree Christmas morning. Such memories are part of the perfect brightness of Christmas, that perfect brightness of hope that should burn in every child’s heart.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Sprinkle yeast and sugar in the warm water. Let set to soften and begin to rise. 2. Separately, add melted butter to 2 cups hot tap water. Add salt. Mix in 3½ cups flour. Beat well. Add eggs and ½ cup sugar. Beat well. Next, add in the yeast mixture and beat well. 3. Add about 3½ cups more flour until soft dough is formed. Knead dough for at least 10 minutes by hand or 5 minutes in mixer. 4. Place in greased bowl. Cover and let rise in warm place until double—about one hour. 5. Roll dough into rectangle. Melt 4 tablespoons butter and spread onto rectangle. Combine cinnamon and sugar and spread onto rectangle. Roll up and cut into rolls. Place on 12 x 18-inch baking sheet. Let rise until double. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. 6. For frosting, mix all ingredients and frost cinnamon rolls while still warm. Makes about 2 dozen rolls.

BABY! IT’S COLD OUTSIDE AND TODAY IS A HOT CHOCOLATE KIND OF DAY There’s nothing that spells cozy better on a cold night than getting family and friends together for an after-dinner indulgence by hosting a hot chocolate bar, or as some call a hot cocoa bar. Amazon has themed hot cocoa bar kits, including decorations, for Christmas, New Year’s Eve—or any special occasion. But you can create your own decorations and use items from your cupboards. This is a chance to pull out those mugs you haven’t used in a while, but hot beverage cups will work just fine, too. Set your mugs on a large tray close to where you will be serving your beverage. Look in your china pantry or cupboards for giant trays to set your selected toppings on. Put your toppings in various-sized containers and arrange attractively—just mix or match your containers. It’s the contents that count. Set the toppings in a location that is easily accessible for your guests, and label the contents of each container.

If you’re more of a purist, you may opt for preparing your hot chocolate in a slow cooker. Just make certain you plan, because you need to allow 2-3 hours on low to blend the flavors.

HERE ARE SOME OF MY FAVORITE TOPPINGS:

Ingredients: • 1 ½ cups chopped chocolate bar of choice • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder • ½ cup sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 cup heavy cream • 1 can evaporated milk (not sweetened condensed milk) • 6 cups whole milk

Caramel or butterscotch syrup, chocolate truffles, candy canes, mini marshmallows, crushed peppermint, cinnamon sticks, bits of toffee, white chocolate shavings, whipped cream, nutmeg sprinkled on whipped cream, Pirouette cookies, Nutella and coarse salt.

Directions: Combine all ingredients in a slow cooker and stir to combine. Cook covered, stirring occasionally, until everything is melted. Serve with your favorite toppings.

MAKING THE HOT CHOCOLATE The quickest way to prepare your beverage is to go to Costco and purchase a 4-pound can of Stephen’s Gourmet Milk Chocolate Hot Cocoa. It’s made right here in Utah. I combine 3 tablespoons

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
