LIFESTYLE LETTER

SEPTEMBER 2021 PUBLISHER

Paula Christie | paula.christie@lifestylepubs.com

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Style! WELCOME TO ST. GEORGE LIFESTYLE! We received many congratulatory comments on our first issue of St. George Lifestyle last month, and we are grateful for all the support from our unrivaled community. We hope you enjoy the features in this month’s issue, and further, that you may find yourself connecting with many of the personalities and ideas these stories illuminate. With this issue I reconnected with Jan Broberg, executive director of Center for the Arts at Kayenta. I have always felt inspired by her openhearted energy and zest for life over the years and find her spontaneity and singlemindedness refreshing. I met a new friend in Shauna Grow, who shared with me her philosophy of “style,” which inspired me to consider what style means to me. Says Shauna: “Style is the way I express myself through the way I dress and put myself together. . .Style to me is one of the greatest forms of art. I believe that with style comes confidence. It goes hand in hand.” I like that. Asher Swan,

Pioneer Day in St. George was the perfect day to unveil two statues to honor William Carter and Daniel D. McArthur, early St. George colonizers. IT MEANS EVERYTHING IF YOU'VE GOT THAT SWING THE NEW LIVE WELL CENTER ST. GEORGE GOLF FITNESS PROGRAM

MENTION ST. GEORGE AND OFTEN THE SPORT OF GOLF BECOMES THE SUBJECT OF THE HOUR. Claiming 13 courses in a 20-mile radius, the area is a paradise for any golfer. From Sunbrook to Sand Hollow to SunRiver to Sky Mountain, and many more, the fairways offer mountain views, desert landscapes, red rock, emerald greens and the bluest skies this side of heaven. In fact, St. George annually averages more than 300 days of sunshine a year, rendering the sport pure pleasure year-round. In such an environment, Intermountain Healthcare’s LiVe Well Center in St. George recently introduced its newest fitness program for golfers of all levels through the LiVe Well Golf Fitness Program. This program is based on research from the Titleist Performance Institute or TPI in Oceanside, California, and is being offered at the Sand Hollow Resort. Photo by Brian Oar

THE TPI BODY-SWING CONNECTION™ The program combines Intermountain Healthcare’s commitment to quality programming and credentialed professionals with TPI’s belief that golf swings are as unique as the individual. TPI has spent nearly 20 years with more than 100,000 golfers of all abilities to study golf swings and develop the TPI Body-Swing Connection™. Based on the institute’s research, an infinite number of swing styles are possible and equally effective based on a person’s unique body mechanics and strength. Using specific data, TPI uncovers how a properly functioning body permits a player to swing a golf club in the most efficient way. TPI also analyzes how physical limitations in a player’s body may adversely affect the golf swing and potentially lead to injury.

18

St George Lifestyle | September 2021

THE ASSESSMENT The program incorporates a 16-point TPI physical assessment using video

THE FINANCIAL FREEDOM TO

and 3D motion capture technology,

DO WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY

which identifies any physical limitations that may be causing swing inefficiencies. The technology evaluates TPI’s 12 most-common swing faults and reveals the individual’s swing fingerprint known as the “kinematic sequence.” Using assessment results, Jeff develops a golf-specific exercise regimen to promote and improve the efficiency of an individual’s swing. Working with clients and watching them improve their golf games has been Jeff’s passion for the past 14 years, and he is thrilled to bring his enthusiasm, the TPI program and his experience to St. George and the surrounding area. “When you consider the national reputation of St. George as a golfing community and destination, coupled with the profile of Intermountain Healthcare, our golf fitness program is a win-win for supporting healthy lifestyles and golf enjoyment,” says Jeff. He adds, “We are more than excited to provide this service to our clients and our community. So many residents enjoy playing golf, and we hope they will take advantage of this new service. This program will improve your personal game and help you develop an efficient swing to reduce injury and give you the strength to continue playing the game well into the future.”

A FRENCH PATISSERIE DAZZLES AND DELIGHTS

WHERE DOES ONE BUY THE BEST DONUTS IN TOWN? How about the best pizza? The freshest salads and sandwiches? And what about baguettes? Farmstead Bakery, a bakery in French style, known as a patisserie, is located on the street level of Joule Plaza Apartments, and has become one of the most popular eateries in downtown St. George. The bakery offers these items and more. Also think croissants and Danish pastries and cakes that seem like they were made in heaven. Proprietor, Chris Connors likes to tell the story of Farmstead’s conception. One evening, about ten years ago, he, Chris Herrin and Li Hsun Sun, were having a conversation about food, sharing their favorite recipes and restaurants in Las Vegas. Each was a restaurant owner and considered themselves connoisseurs of the best cuisine. Each was passionate about feeding people. Connors says, “It was in this small moment of breaking bread that Farmstead was born.”

HOT SPOT (CONTINUED) They had visited the St. George area and loved the environment, the genuineness of the people, the feeling of community. Connors is grateful for the team that has come on board since opening in March. Chef Mary Cech has been recognized as one of the “Top Ten Pastry Chefs in America” by Chocolatier magazine, named “Pastry Chef of the Year” by Chefs in America and has written two cookbooks. Ben Garcia is an artisan in his own right. He spent 14 years at Bouchon at the Venetian as bakery sous chef and most recently was executive assistant chef at the Wynn Hotel, both in Las Vegas. “We are so happy Ben is with us. He is a great person with amazing culinary talent and a beautiful family. We are lucky to have him in St. George," says Connors. Customers refer to the Farmstead staff as some of the nicest they have met, not just by their smiles, but by their attentive service. The food preparation areas are immaculate, and when things are busy with staff serving customers, Connors or Herrin may be seen pushing a broom. Says Connors, “Our location is the perfect place to stop and have a delicious bite on your way to Zion National Park, Bryce National Park or Snow Canyon State Park.” He adds, “We invite you to ‘come break bread’ with us.”

In 2003, Jan Broberg and her mother, Mary Ann Broberg, co-authored a book titled, “Stolen Innocence: The Jan Broberg Story” to raise awareness about the maliciousness of child predators. Jan was kidnapped twice, sexually abused and brainwashed by a trusted neighbor. Her story was later told through the documentary, “Abducted in Plain Sight,” produced by filmmaker Sky Borgman, which appears on Netflix. Also known as "Forever B," this film has won best documentary at numerous film festivals, as well as winning the Mayor's Award at DOCUTAH.

+ ½ cup shaved Parmesan cheese

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS:

+ 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided + 6 boneless skinless chicken thighs

1. Season chicken with salt and pepper. 2. Pour 2 tablespoons oil in heavy cast iron skillet

+ Salt and pepper, to taste

and heat until oil is shiny. Sear chicken on both sides

+ 1 medium onion, diced

until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes each side.

+ 2 tablespoons minced garlic (or 6 cloves)

Remove from skillet, set aside and cover in plastic.

+ 1 small yellow bell pepper diced

3. Add remaining tablespoon of oil to pan. Sauté onion until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add peppers, carrot, mushrooms and herbs; cook 5 minutes until vegetables begin to soften. 4. Pour in beef stock. Cook until stock is reduced, about 3 minutes. 5. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and Roma. Salt and pepper to taste. Return chicken pieces to skillet and continue to oven, following instructions below. FOR THE OVEN: 1. Transfer covered skillet to preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) and cook for 50 minutes. Remove lid, add olives, and cook an additional 20 minutes until chicken is tender, and sauce has reduced to a thick consistency. 2. Garnish with Italian parsley, shaved Parmesan and serve immediately with pasta.
