LIFESTYLE LETTER
We're Rooting For You In 2025!
January 2025 PUBLISHERS
Gordon Montgomery gordon.montgomery@citylifestyle.com Kelley Lamm | kelley.lamm@citylifestyle.com C O PY E D I TO R
For many, this time of year brims with excitement and possibility: a fresh slate, new goals and horizons to explore. But for others, January might come with reminders of past attempts that didn’t pan out or the pressure that this year must be different. As we approached this edition of St. Charles County City Lifestyle, we did so with a mindset of creating something meaningful; not about quick fixes or checking boxes, but about fostering sustainable, long-term improvements. The kind of changes that nurture your physical, emotional and mental well-being for the long haul. In our home, we’ve shifted our focus from simply chasing goals to embracing small, daily changes and moments to reground ourselves. Those little habits and special moments have a way of growing into something bigger, achievements that inspire us to stay balanced and keep moving forward. When it comes to life, whether in business, relationships, food, home, or health, it’s not the some days that define our outcomes, but the most days. For better or worse, the choices we make consistently are the ones that truly shape our lives. Think about it: taking a vacation every day isn’t feasible, but planning a few trips a year? Absolutely. Enjoying a steak dinner with cocktails and dessert every night might not work for your health, but indulging occasionally? Perfectly fine! It’s not the occasional decisions that matter most; it’s the regular ones. So, this year, dream big and take small steps daily. Book that trip and prioritize regular rest in your week. Join a fitness community and savor the dessert from that local spot you’ve been eyeing. It’s about finding balance and creating habits that make life more peaceful, fulfilling, and fabulous. We’re rooting for you—and we can’t wait to see all the ways you shine in 2025. Here’s to a wonderful year ahead! Warmly,

The Roasted Purpose Founder, Joanna Johnsen, Says Her Coffee Benefits Health And Home
Coffee With Cause During conversations with Joanna Johnsen, the first thing one notices is her megawatt smile and boundless energy. In only a few minutes’ time, it becomes clear that Joanna has enthusiasm for family, community and coffee.

She was advised to increase her protein intake by adding it to her morning coffee. “My morning coffee was a ritual for me, but with my food sensitivities, it was hard because I had to avoid whey protein due to dairy, and vegan proteins because of peas. So I came up with the perfect ingredient to add to my coffee: collagen.” CONTINUED >
Founder Joanna Johnsen
“I’m a lot,” she admits with a laugh. “I had a dream one night in 2022, and by the time my husband woke up that morning, I already had our packaging, domain and name registry complete.” Joanna doesn't waste time when she has a passion for something. Prior to that 2022 dream, she says she'd been struggling with joint pain. Working with a nutritionist, Joanna discovered she had a multitude of food sensitivities, all of which contributed to the health issues that kept her from feeling her best. Dairy, gluten and artificial flavors became ingredients she needed to avoid.

Collagen is a protein that contributes to the strength and elasticity of tissues throughout the human body. Accounting for nearly a third of the total protein in the body, collagen is a building block for muscles, cartilage, ligaments, bones, hair and skin. Collagen is an important part of the gastrointestinal tract, and aids in the structure of the vascular system. With age, collagen levels decrease, impacting all of these systems. Although Joanna recognized the importance of collagen protein, the frequent travel she and her family did made it difficult to ensure she was able to always add this to her daily routine. From the frustrations of having to pull over several times a day to make coffee and the mess of adding collagen to her brew, Joanna created The Roasted Purpose. The Roasted Purpose is a truly unique coffee. Free of dairy, gluten and artificial ingredients, it packs 18 grams of protein, derived from grass-fed bovine collagen. The Roasted Purpose is blended, not brewed, and it can be served hot or iced. Simply add a scoop to water and blend for 15-20 seconds.
Current latte flavors include blueberry, chocolate-covered banana, cinnamon dolce, creamy caramel, hazelnut, horchata, maple pumpkin spice and peppermint mocha, in addition to chocolate, vanilla, chai, matcha and unflavored proteins. Joanna doesn't stop there, however. She says her passion for health extends to the community. For every purchase of coffee from The Roasted Purpose, a portion of sales is donated to Restoration House of St. Louis. Restoration House is an immersion project aimed at helping St. Louis urban youth achieve success through a holistic approach for each child. Kids served by Restoration House have received full scholarships to college and trade school. They receive meals, hygiene essentials, clothing, laundry and assistance obtaining necessary forms of identification that are required when applying for housing and employment. 314.200.5585 TheRoastedPurpose.com

FOOD FREEDOM In 2025
ADVICE EDITORIAL: SAY GOODBYE TO DIETS, HELLO TO CLEAN EATING ARTICLE BY ALANA FRAVELL, WELLNESS GUIDE PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHANON KRUEGER, DELANEY JEAN PHOTOGRAPHY
22
EAT R IGH T | FO O D + BEVE RAGE
Clean eating isn’t just a trend; it’s the key to a healthier, more energized life. What one eats fuels body and mind, and processed foods work against consumers. As a former chronic dieter, my life has changed dramatically since eating clean. I’ve lost nearly 100 pounds without restricting, and now teach clients how to do the same.
WHY GO CLEAN?
• Nutritional Void: Packaged foods lack nutrients, leaving bodies undernourished and craving more. • Harmful Additives: Chemicals in processed foods cause inflammation, weight gain and long-term damage. • Addiction by Design: Sugar, fat and salt in processed foods are engineered to keep people hooked. Yikes!
FIVE STEPS TO START EATING CLEAN:
1. Go Nutrient-Dense: Prioritize whole, colorful foods full of vitamins and minerals. If it looks like meat or a vegetable, it’s probably good for you! 2. Strive for Five: Fewer, recognizable ingredients are better. 3. Avoid Overly Processed Foods: If it can't be made at home (cheesy-poofs), skip it. 4. Experiment: Try eliminating sugar, gluten, or dairy to see how you feel. 5. Strive for 80/20: Give yourself grace. Be clean 80% of the time and flexible for the rest. Clean eating isn’t about perfection; it’s about balance. Fuel your body with real, nourishing foods; you’ll feel better, crave less and reclaim your health. Nutrition is the baseline for health; make 2025 the year you go clean! And, if you’re like me, you’ve probably tried every “diet” out there, so why not try a new lifestyle instead? Visit AlanaFravell.com for clean cooking lessons and free resources.

Midwest Family Wellness Team Educates About Spinal Health, Staying Active And Healthy Living ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE WINSLOW
24
EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
Maintaining an empathetic, energetic and engaging chiropractic practice is the long-standing mission of Midwest Family Wellness professionals at 1755 Stump Road in Dardenne Prairie. In fact, this group wants everyone to know they don't have to live in pain or health problems that easily can seem like 'just part of life.'
When not taking care of patients, Dr. Josh Fink is with his family on their cattle ranch in Troy. St. Peters native and MFW clinic director Joshua Fink, D.C., has been in practice since 2001 and launched his own office during July 2003, originally located in Cottleville. He soon was joined by Matthew Fink, D.C., and Brad Mawer, D.C., who he calls "the literal backbones of the office," given the average number (300 patients per week) and types of adjustments they handle. "The practice grew so fast, we had to expand our 700-square-foot space, and even knock out a wall. When our patients kept increasing, we opened a second location in Wentzville. But there were still more patients needing care," recalls Dr. Josh. "So during 2019, we bought land and had an office built where we are now in Dardenne Prairie. We specifically designed the new office to be a streamlined, efficient environment for patients who don't feel they have time for appointments but still need the care."
Some MFW patients indicate they feel like family as soon as they walk into the space. Rounding out the current staff is Danielle Lorenscheit, D.C., specializing in female athletes, as well as Amanda Drum, D.C., who Dr. Josh says operates the largest pediatric chiropractic business in Missouri. Kori Sloan serves as massage therapist, Sara Sorich as patient educator, Michelle Kennison and Stacey Miller as patient advocates, Kenzie Krieger is the registered yoga teacher and Amy McGhee handles scheduling. Education and sharing knowledge with patients is paramount among this medical group. Dr. Josh says he's performed 1,000-plus lectures, including regional high schools, businesses, government offices and even fellow medical facilities, often to address proper approaches and changes in ergonomics. "I love research, medical publications and analyzing case studies," says Dr. Josh, a former University of CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/STC H A R L E S C O UN T Y

Missouri-Columbia biochemist. "I summarize this type of information so we can provide the most current details and changes in therapies to our patients, at the office, and especially through our podcasts and YouTube channel." Additionally, the MFW chiropractors complete 48 hours of continuing education every two years. Currently, Dr. Josh says many youths are seeking assistance due to experiencing headaches and numb arms. He shares that a predominant issue comes from poor posture associated with using and leaning over electronic devices for up to 3 hours daily. Calling it an actual "postural shift," he says the brain's cerebellum actually controls posture and solutions require retraining it to send a different signal, or stimulus, to the brain about how to hold the body's torso. "With 'forward head posture' situations, pulmonary health also can decrease, hand speed can become slower, body muscle control weakens, osteoarthritic damage can happen, jaw pain can begin and cognition can lessen. We teach the right kind of daily exercises to retrain the brain and body, basically rehabilitating our natural habits," he explains. MFW services also include acupuncture, deep tissue laser therapy, cupping, yoga classes, sound therapy and massage therapy. Dr. Josh says patients typically provide them with three categories of feedback: "1) They say we've never had an exam as complete as the one you did. 2) We've never talked this much about what was happening with my body. And 3) Do you have room for my friends?" 636.922.0777 MFWellness.org YouTube: MF Wellness

How Sound Immersion Can Transform Well-Being
THE SOUND OF WELLNESS
28
As a new year begins, prioritizing wellness is more important than ever. Amidst the busyness of life, it can be easy to forget the profound impact that stress has on minds and bodies. With dieting and exercising taking the main stage in January, one of the most vital pieces to overall well-being is often overlooked: the nervous system. The health of each person's nervous system impacts how they experience the world around them, every situation, every relationship, everything done. The Sound Spa was launched on the knowledge that sound vibration and frequency has the power to restore harmony to the nervous system. Through a combination of ancient sound techniques and modern therapeutic tools, an immersive experience is created to help clients reduce stress, alleviate tension and promote deep meditative experiences. A retreat from the everyday hustle, The Sound Spa is a sanctuary of serenity located in the heart of St. Peters. Founder Noelle Robinson says their goal is to offer a holistic approach to health and well-being, focusing on the nervous system as the key to unlocking true calm and inner peace. City Lifestyle asks her about details.
LOCA L’S CH OICE | HEALT H + WE LLN E SS
WHAT LED YOU TO OPEN THE SOUND SPA?
"About five years ago, I was in the worst health of my life and it was getting pretty scary. Doctors had tested me for a range of issues and couldn’t figure out what was going on. I had fibromyalgia, ADHD, anxiety, auto-immune issues, and then some neurological issues popped up in my late twenties. After years of trying to solve these issues, I stumbled upon sound immersions at a yoga retreat. After just a few months of going to these events weekly, my chronic pain and ADHD symptoms were gone. I was able to get off all medications and I'm healthier and happier than ever before. I realized how much of an impact stress had on my life, and I became determined to help others who were struggling with chronic issues as well."
WHAT EXACTLY IS A SOUND IMMERSION?
"A sound immersion, also known as a sound bath, is a deeply restorative and meditative experience that uses the vibrations of sound to guide your body and mind into a meditative state of relaxation. We use instruments like crystal singing bowls, gongs and chimes to create a soundscape that mimics the frequencies of nature. The vibrations of these instruments entrain the brain and heart rhythms to a more natural state, releasing stress and tension from the body with ease. During a sound immersion, many feel that they're cocooned in their own space, enveloped by the soothing sounds that allow clients to connect with a deep sense of inner peace." CONTINUED >
JANUARY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/STC H A R L E S C O UN T Y
29
HOW DO SOUND IMMERSIONS WORK ON A PHYSIOLOGICAL LEVEL?
"The sounds and vibrations produced during a sound immersion have a direct effect on the nervous system. Our bodies respond to these frequencies by entering a parasympathetic state, often called the ‘rest and digest’
mode, which counteracts the stress-driven 'fight or flight' response. This shift allows the body to naturally slow down, promoting the body’s natural healing ability. Sound immersions also help to regulate brainwave activity. The gentle and rhythmic sounds guide the brain into alpha and theta states, which are associated with deep relaxation, creativity, and even the kind of healing that occurs during deep sleep."
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SOUND IMMERSIONS?

"The benefits of sound immersions extend far beyond simple relaxation. Regular sessions can lead to a significant reduction in anxiety and stress, improved sleep quality, enhanced focus and mental clarity, and even relief from chronic pain. Many people also report feeling a heightened sense of emotional balance and overall well-being after just one session. It’s a holistic approach that nurtures both the body and the mind." 636.233.2373 TheSoundSpa.com
