holidays. There are examples throughout this issue, including Little Black Book’s BrrrBASH benefitting Toys for Tots, the Convention Center’s Helping Hands event, and VITAS Healthcare's Memory Bear program. Others inspire us by using their talents and passions in ways that entertain us, inform us and bring us joy, like the story of Earl Mullins and his “mission” to develop a Space Museum in his tiny hometown of Bonne Terre, Karen Didion who creates one-of-a-kind porcelain Santas, and Broadway Star Diana DeGarmo who will entertain and enlighten us with the story and music of Patsy Cline at STAGES. But of course, a December issue would not be complete without some festive and flavorful holiday treats, so enjoy these culinary creations on pages 30-33 as you reflect upon a year that has brought us change, challenges and growth.

KAREN DIDION'S ART HAS HEART

12

St. Charles County Lifestyle | December 2020

I

T WAS HER LOVE OF THE CHRISTMAS SEASON THAT INSPIRED KAREN DIDION, A SELF-TAUGHT ARTIST, TO USE HER GOD-GIVEN GIFT TO CREATE

ONE-OF-A-KIND PORCELAIN SANTAS THAT WOULD EVENTUALLY LEAD TO A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS AND HELP BRING JOY TO FAMILIES AROUND THE WORLD. “I was always creative as a child,” says Karen. “But actually, it’s kind-of funny that I almost failed my high school art class. I don’t sketch or produce paintings. I am a designer and am continually inspired with new designs. Being a business owner can be tedious at times, but when I get into doing my design work, I could work for hours and hours…I don’t ever feel like it’s work. The design part of the business gives me such joy.” Over 30 years ago, in the basement of her Lake Saint Louis home, Karen started creating Christmas gifts for family and friends and selling her work at craft shows. In 1996, she was participating in a craft show at a country club and one of the golfers took notice of her work. That ultimately led to one of her designs being selected for the cover of Neiman Marcus’ Christmas Catalog. With that, Karen left her nursing career and started building the business full-time. She credits her family, husband Rick, and their four children--Matt, Jennifer, Jake and Kyle--for helping with every aspect of her business. Karen says the Christmas season is the one that always seems to bring out what she loves most in the world: hope, joy, love, and family. She carefully considers that when developing her art. Currently, Karen Didion Originals has five unique lines. The first is her stunning “One-Of-A-Kind” collection. As the title claims, these creations are the only designs CONTINUED >

“…I DON’T EVER FEEL LIKE IT’S WORK. THE DESIGN PART OF THE BUSINESS GIVES ME SUCH JOY.” of their kind and are handcrafted exclusively by Karen. She’s the only designer and does about 75 one-of-kinds each year. Her exceptional attention to detail, the high-quality fabric and accessories are just a few of the high standards that Karen upholds. Her beautiful hand-painted Santas feature porcelain faces with real wool beards. She incorporates an extraordinary selection of antique toys, ornaments, and accessories into each piece. She even sews the clothes, usually with vintage fabrics. Each Santa is featured in a unique vignette. She also has Limited Editions, which are similar but created in small amounts. The immense success of these Santa Claus collectibles has resulted in the introduction of Karen’s secondary lines. Born from endless amounts of inspiration and creativity, the Spooktacular, Classic Home, and Spring collections have now also been highly successful. Each of these Classic Home Collectibles

They also include beautiful glass inset eyes and all have their own exceptional theme and detail. Each of Karen’s personal designs comes with its own sewn-in collector’s tag as well as a miniature artist profile on the back of the figurines. Many exquisite and unique fabrics are used to make each item’s clothing; such as imported tapestry, velvet, jacquard knit, satin, velour, suede and leather. Novelty prints and designer buttons set off the vests and coats. Faux fur, embroidery, unusual braid and tassels are used as trims. Her latest addition to the business is themed wreaths…for holidays and general décor.

LITTLE BLACK BOOK (LBB) IS AN ORGANIZATION OF FEMALE PROFESSIONALS COMMITTED TO BUSINESS AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT WHO ALSO STRIVE TO GROW THEIR INDIVIDUAL NETWORK AND COMMUNITY THROUGH SERVICE AND CHARITY. In 2013, LBB founded BrrrBASH, a large-scale collaborative toy collection to benefit Toys for Tots. The 2020 LBB BrrrBASH kicked off its eighth annual toy drive on November 1st when collection boxes were placed into the community, and concludes December 12th with a celebration at the Foundry Art Centre in Historic Saint Charles. This sold-out event includes dinner, open bar, live music, dancing, raffles, silent auction, and a photobooth for party pics. Little Black Book partners with over 100 local businesses in four counties, along with the cities of Wentzville, Lake St Louis, O’Fallon and St. Peters, and numerous Fire Protection Districts in St Charles County to actively collect toys and money for the charity. Since 2013, LBB has donated over 29,500 toys to the Toys for Tots Foundation, all of which are distributed in the Greater St. Louis area. For the past three years, BrrrBASH has accounted for 20% of the total number of toys distributed by the U.S. Marines to happy children at Christmas. “We are proud to know that LBB is the third largest donor in the greater St. Louis region, and that St. Louis is the third largest collection in the United States,” says LBB Founder Angel Magasano. In addition to distributing toys to the area’s needy children, the BrrrBASH provides funding for local businesses, students, and other charities as well. In 2019, $10,000 was donated to We Love St. Charles, a local non-profit dedicated to mentoring impoverished families, individuals, and at-risk youth through family support and intervention, homelessness prevention, and

BROADWAY STAR DIANA DEGARMO. A country girl from Georgia, Diana says she’s a huge Patsy Cline fan and loves her story and her music. Diana has been blowing away audiences with her powerful voice and irresistible charm for nearly two decades. She was runner-up on American Idol’s Season Three at the mere age of 16. Soon after, she released her first single, “Dreams,” that reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. Diana soon made her Broadway debut as Penny Pingleton in Hairspray and toured with BKLYN: The Musical, in the title role. Her path in musical theatre continued to grow and in 2010, Diana joined the Broadway revival of Hair as Sheila. There she met her now husband, Ace Young. The two quickly became a dynamic singing/song-writing team and toured together, co-starring in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Diana also made a name for herself on the #1 Daytime TV Drama, “The Young and The Restless” as troublemaker and fan favorite, Angelina Veneziano. In addition, she recently starred as Lucy in the South Korean Tour and NSMT productions of Jekyll & Hyde. Her new album, Gemini, has just released. STAGES is also thrilled to include in its 2021 lineup the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning masterpiece A Chorus Line, Broadway sensation Jersey Boys, and the Family Theatre Series production of A Year with Frog and Toad. 2021 not only marks the 35th Anniversary Season for STAGES, but also the move into its new home in The Ross Family Theatre at the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center. The 40,000 square foot state-ofthe-art facility features the 529-seat Ross Family Theatre, where all future productions of the Mainstage Season will play, and a flexible studio theatre, which will serve as home for the Family Theatre Series.
