GROWN INTO A TRIFECTA OF COTTLEVILLE RESTAURANTS FOR ANDREW BREWER. The Plank Road Pizza and Cottleville Cookies and Cream owner will add barbecue to his culinary repertoire with the opening of his third
restaurant—1798 BBQ—this spring. Named for the year Cottleville was founded, the barbecue restau-
rant will feature homemade family recipes and house-smoked meats. Ribs, pulled pork and brisket will be everyday choices for diners, and longtime family favorite recipes will be featured as sides. “We will have most of the staples everyone is used to [with barbecue],” says Brewer, who co-owns the three businesses with his parents, Susan and Wade Brewer. “My favorite is the cornbread corn.” Grandma’s cucumber recipe made the menu as a fresh side, and all of the made-from-scratch rubs and sauces that Andrew grew up with will be available. And while the unique rubs and sauces enhance the flavor of the house-smoked meats, Andrew says the true test of great barbecue is if the meat tastes good on its own—without sauce. “I really hope people try it without sauce first because it’s going to hold up to any expectation,” Andrew says. “The juicy, the tender—that’s going to be there. I really think that’s the differentiator from competitors.” And as a certified barbecue judge, Andrew knows his barbecue. The restaurant owner has been smoking his own meats for family since he purchased his first electric smoker in high school. And he credits his parents for their shared love of cooking, passed along to him since childhood. His fond memories of barbecuing with family and learning new skills and recipes from his parents led him to this latest venture. “We barbecued a lot for special events and that’s what’s fun about it—it’s all about family and friends,” Andrew says. Located at 5210 Highway N in a converted house from the 1800s, 1798 BBQ will offer indoor seating in the eclectic dining room for 30 to 40 patrons. A large outdoor patio, which will connect to Plank Road Pizza next door, will allow for seating up to 60. The outdoor space will also include a bar area, stocked with local and national beers—from Budweiser to O’Fallon Gold to Schlafly. “The silo outside will be a little bar area, so hopefully that will really get popping on Friday and Saturday nights,” Andrew says. 1798 BBQ will also offer a nice Southern treat to accompany the tender, juicy barbecue entrees: homemade sweet tea, which is also a special family recipe. So whether it's an afternoon lunch with friends, a date night or a family dinner, 1798 BBQ has a mouthwatering menu of time-tested family recipes to tantalize the pickiest of palates.

Opening in 1967, the once iconic building stood as a testament to good times and special memories for many, and with its large fiberglass animals, was a beacon to hungry travelers. In 2000, the hotel and restaurant closed and remained dormant, waiting for someone to rehabilitate and use the space. Enter Cullinan Properties, a property management firm that purchased the property in 2008 and created the Streets of St. Charles, the county’s premier destination for dining, shopping, entertainment, and THE place to live and work. With close access to I-70, the Streets of St. Charles includes 1 million square feet of space with much to do and see—especially during the spring and summer. The 27-acre mixed-use development is now home to luxury apartments, a state-of-the-art movie theater, coffee bars, boho shops and some of the best restaurants and bars in the St. Louis area. If, like many locals, you can’t wait for Old Man Winter to move along and are ready to start planning things to do this spring and summer, the Streets of St. Charles has a number of outdoor events to choose from, such as the Beale Street Concert series and the Beale Street Market. The concert series is in its sixth year and will host various artists on the second Wednesday of each month from 6–8 p.m., May through October. Guests can

Beale Street Market will open on the first Wednesday in May and run through September, from 4–7 p.m. This event showcases all types of local products. In addition to these events, visitors to the Streets of St. Charles (or residents) can expect to see some new business venues, such as the Cherry Blow Dry Bar, Play Street Museum and Yoga Six. The newest mixed-use building will be 60,000 square feet. “The first floor of the space will be retail, and the second and third floors will be office space,” says Anaise Berry, marketing director for Cullinan Properties. In addition, Anaise says Narwhals will also be opening this spring, a bar that brands itself as serving “crafted urban ice” currently located in St. Louis. SPRING IS IN THE AIR, AND IT’S TIME TO BRING YOUR OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES TO LIFE. No matter the season, outdoor living is more popular than ever, as homeowners look to “bring the indoors out” and create spaces that are true extensions of the home. The newest designs in outdoor living spaces don’t simply feature the look of the indoors, but the functionality as well. Vibrant textiles like cushions, pillows and rugs can all soften the look of a space while adding colorful charm, but another effective place where you can introduce plenty of character is the landscaping. Making the landscape seamlessly integrate into the area not only transforms the way the space looks, but it also enhances the outdoor ambiance. CREATE CLIMATE CONTROL One of the first considerations is the functional benefits landscaping can bring, such as providing shade from the hotter weather. Quaking aspens and birch trees are beautiful and fast-growing options, or for a more traditional look, some maple trees grow quickly and certain varieties create a dazzling display of color. Another popular option is the Bradford pear, but this tree can be brittle and is prone to splitting. Flowering trees, such as the tulip tree or dogwood, are other fast-growing options. If a tree is impractical for your space or simply not your style, you might consider large flowering bushes, such as the lilac or Rose of Sharon. KEEP PRYING EYES OUT When it comes to privacy, there is also a multitude of options. Ornamental grasses come in a wide array of colors and looks, and many grow high enough to shield a private lounge or eating area. Or, you could consider a lush climbing vine paired with a trellis. Dwarf trees and shrubs also lend privacy when planted in close proximity. Another stylish option is to put oversized planters into play. Fill them with vegetation for an instant eye-block topped with live plants. SET BOUNDARIES If your outdoor space doesn’t have a clearly defined perimeter, you can introduce borders using a line of shrubbery or bushes. Low-growing options help maintain an open feel while adding some definition to the area. GO LOW-MAINTENANCE If you’re leery of adding plants that need frequent care and attention, there are several options requiring little effort. Succulents are a great way to add texture, interest and color to a planter or table-top pot. For more color, opt for low-maintenance perennials that require little water. After your initial planting and fertilizing, you’ll need to water during dry spells in the summer, but for the most part, they’ll require little extra attention through the year until it’s time to trim them back for winter. HOW TO PROTECT YOUR TREES AND SHRUBS FROM A LATE SPRING FROST The owners of Omas Barn in St. Peters offer these tips for protecting your trees and shrubs from late spring frost: When plants are getting their sap flowing at this time of year, chemical changes are happening beneath the surface to make their tissues more susceptible to freezing. It’s like their anti-freeze was diluted with sugary food. If it’s just budding, with no fresh leaves showing, a light frost won’t do damage. If there are fresh leaves or petals showing, they could be blackened by even a moderate frost. Most frosts are not going to do long-term, irreparable damage. Usually, it’s a puckery, darkened edge around the first leaves to emerge or the same with the tips of new flowers. The real killer is a hard freeze at this time of year. There are several ways to prevent damage when a freeze/frost is predicted. Using a breathable row cover or fabric, such as a sheet, works well. The most important thing is to secure the fabric to the ground around the edges, if possible. This traps some of the ground heat and moderates the temperature beneath the cover. Another method used by many nurseries is to turn on their sprinklers before dawn to melt off the frost and protect the foliage with a thin layer of ice. The effectiveness of this method depends on the plants in question. If they were just shipped from a warmer locale, it’s best to cover them because they're not acclimated to our weather yet. For plants in your garden, this can work well—if you’re willing to get up before dawn and drag a hose around! If Mother Nature decides to throw us a curve, use these methods to minimize the damage. But if you do receive freeze damage to your landscape, you can remove these areas with selective pruning to leave them looking healthy.

One look at the Facebook page for Gateway Swings and it’s easy to see why Paul Draher’s family-owned O’Fallon business has been and continues to be so successful. With hundreds of satisfied customers and dozens of reviews that laud this bestkept secret, Gateway Swings is a must-visit for any family thinking of installing an activity center in their backyard. To understand how Paul came about this unique business idea, you have to know his background. He has a Masters in Education (he’s working on his doctorate), and for 10 years he worked in Daniell Middle School, north of Atlanta, primarily with kids who had learning disabilities. Schools are asked to do so many things from social work, to development, to standardized tests that it really doesn’t allow for any flexibility,” Paul says. “What they’re not able to do is give the kids unstructured play.” What’s important about that concept, Paul says, is that when kids are at play, their brain works in reverse and becomes the creator, soaking up the information they’ve received all day long. “What they’ve learned throughout the day sinks in,” he explains. Enter the idea for Gateway Swings, a business centered around the interests and passion of the children who will use the equipment, affording them the outlet they need after being in a structured environment all day long. 1. FATIGUE Water helps hydrate your organs and allows for better cell profusions. Key: Drink 4 cups of warm water in the morning on an empty stomach, then eat 45 minutes later.
2. DIGESTIVE DISORDERS The body needs an adequate supply of water to produce a wide array of digestive juices. A shortage of water and minerals can lead to a host of digestive disorders including ulcers, gastritis and acid reflux.
3. ITCHY SKIN Skin dryness can be caused by chronic dehydration. Itchy, flaky skin, as well as slow healing and bruising, could be explained in part by a distinct lack of water.
4. HEADACHE The brain is a resource glutton. Even a small drop in body water mass can cause a big headache.
5. WEIGHT GAIN When dehydrated, cells are depleted of energy. They have to rely on energy generated from food rather than water. People thus tend to eat more, when in reality, the body is thirsty. In addition, the body will not metabolize fat unless it is adequately hydrated to safely remove dangerous toxins stored in fat cells.
6. BLADDER OR KIDNEY PROBLEMS As with all of the elimination organs, when the body is dehydrated, toxins are not eliminated as well, creating an environment where bacteria thrive and the bladder and kidney become prone to infection, inflammation and pain.
7. CONSTIPATION The colon is one of the first places the body pulls water from when it’s needed in order to provide other fluids for critical body functions. Without adequate water, waste moves through the large intestines much more slowly.
