LIFESTYLE LETTER

LOVE LOCAL With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, we wanted to use this issue to show our love and gratitude for all things local. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate the day, or the month, we hope the pages of this issue will help you do just that as we highlight what’s to love in our community. “Love local” means local businesses, but it also means loving what is most near and dear to your heart…your family and friends. So, grab them and go visit an art gallery, eat at a locally owned restaurant, shop a favorite boutique, visit museums, enjoy a local coffee shop or cafe, buy local libations, or staycation at a boutique hotel in the area. For a romantic night on the big day, we offer some great suggestions for Wine & Chocolate on page 26. And some creative gift ideas from Roemer’s custom jewelry (page 14). There are always people in our local community that inspire and encourage us to do amazing things, and this month we feature one of them…Kim Cavarretta, who has worked with true passion over many years, earning her 19th pink Cadillac from Mary Kay Cosmetics this year (on page 36). Our hope is that the people and places in this magazine inspire you to love your community and those in it just a bit more than you did before. We sure appreciate all our Readers and wish you all a Happy February! With love from our home to yours,

Roemer Originals THE ART OF BUILDING JEWELRY

ARTICLE BY ROBIN SEATON JEFFERSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY CASEY PIERCE

With nearly four decades of combined design experience, the artists at Roemer Originals aren’t just customer service people. Owners Melinda Nolan and her son, Tom Nolan are trained in the art of building jewelry. And they want to tell their client’s stories through the pieces they fashion for them. “The reason this is so important is that we know what can and can’t be done as far as functionality and durability of a piece,” Melinda says. “We can help design beautiful elements but also recommend structural integrity into the design to make it last. When it comes to designing a piece of jewelry that you’re going to spend your hard-earned money on, it’s good to know you’re putting it in the hands of someone that is experienced and knows what they are talking about.”

Opened in 1975, Roemer Originals uses only the most highly skilled craftsmen and merchants to create one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry. “Each piece of jewelry we design starts from scratch. When you own a Roemer Original, you can take pride in knowing that you are wearing one of the finest pieces of custom jewelry made in the world today. Why settle for a copy, when you can have the original? We specialize in custom design, and we feel like we do it better because we are designers, not just salespeople selling jewelry out of a case,” Melinda said. And, we don’t work on commission, so there’s never any pressure. Melinda has always had an eye for everything that shines, and Tom is a GIA Graduate Gemologist. “I’ve always loved anything that sparkles. I remember I used to try to find the sparkly rocks in a rock pile as a child.” She said, while Roemer does offer pre-designed rings, including mountings from their manufacturers, from silver to platinum to diamond jewelry and everything in between, much of

what they do is original. “People bring in screenshots from the Web or other pictures. We interpret what the customer wants and design it from there.” Melinda and Tom specialize in pieces that are often a conglomeration of jewelry items that have been handed down for generations from loved ones—pieces that are worn out or are not the current owner’s style. They call this the “Roemer Re-Style.” Melinda says maybe the owner wants to wear their heirlooms, but for whatever reason, is unable to. “She's been holding onto them in a box for years, but finally decided it's better to turn them into something she’ll wear and appreciate, than to leave them in their current state sitting in a dark box, unworn and unloved,” she says. Then other times, their clients may have a dream of a special gemstone, symbolizing an anniversary or the birth of a child, that Roemer will put into a unique and priceless setting to be worn for years to come. Whatever the person’s story may be, CONTINUED >

Melinda and Tom create the perfect piece using stones the person already has or helping them find the perfect gems to create that one-of-a-kind piece that they dream of. Roemer has an in-house jeweler and does its appraisals and repairs at the shop in St. Charles, Missouri. Melinda says she wholeheartedly espouses supporting small businesses. Nevertheless, she says, wherever a person goes to find that perfect piece, Melinda recommends never purchasing expensive jewelry online. She said she had a client recently who purchased a lab-grown diamond from a chain store, though they were not told it was lab-grown versus mined. “A certificate for a diamond doesn’t tell you everything. There are so many things about a diamond that can only be seen with your own eyes,” she says. Not only do you want something unique and for it to make you feel special, you want to make sure the store you’re purchasing it from will still be there, and that they are ethical. You’re always going to have a better experience with and be able to trust privately owned stores. Plus, they give back to the community and support local programs and charities.

I recommend reading the reviews of companies just like you do for a vacation or other products and services.” Roemer offers repair services, jewelry appraisals, resizing, and pearl restringing. They buy gold and estate jewelry and offer corporate gifts. They also offer financing. And they can educate customers on fine metals and pearls, gemstones, diamonds, ring styles and setting types. Roemer also offers First Impressions and Cassandra Erin—two lines that capture the fingerprints and paw prints of loved ones. The keepsake pieces have different “feels” and each tends to gravitate toward different clients. Cassandra Erin’s line is flexible and can capture anything from handwriting, to a drawing, to a handprint to create an heirloom to last for years to come. The First Impressions® line captures the essence of what is most important to people—love and relationships. The pieces are tangible reminders of the touch of someone—a new mom, a spouse of a distant soldier, a person battling a life-threatening illness, or someone who has passed—and simply reflect the notion: "I need you to be with me always."

COMMANDING PRESENCE WITHOUT TRYING THROUGH LEGACY OF FASHION SPANNING FIVE GENERATIONS

20

FASH ION F OR WA R D | SHOPPI NG

The French fashion designer, Christian Louboutin, whose shiny, high-end stiletto footwear has made him famous said: “A shoe has much more to offer than just to walk.” Don’t they know it. Fashion has been a culture, a legacy in the Gelber family since the 19th century. Designer Rick Gelber’s maternal great-grandfather owned a dress manufacturing company on Washington Avenue in St. Louis. His paternal great-grandfather operated Gelber’s Men’s Clothing here. Today, Rick and his wife, Cynthia Gelber, own and operate Cynthia Richard, a luxury shoe brand that espouses the belief that true confidence is found within and will always speak louder than the latest trend. Rick spent most of his own fashion career traveling through Europe, Asia and Brazil as a designer, creative director and general manager for Caleres, Inc. (formerly Brown Shoe Co founded in 1875 in St. Louis). He introduced the Carlos by Carlos Santana shoe brand over a decade ago at Caleres. “We grew up wearing the samples that the department stores didn’t take,” says the

Gelbers' daughter, Megan Perry, who marveled at her father’s designs for years. “They took the safe shoes. My sisters and I disagreed with what the department stores picked and thought even then that we should have a family line. Kids at school would say, ‘Where did you get those?’ They called us the ‘Gelber Girls with The Best Shoes.’ We learned to build our outfits from the shoes up. My dad would design these amazing shoes, and we weren’t able to tell people where they could get them.” But it was Cynthia who ultimately encouraged the newest Gelber family business. “She’s always the best-dressed person in the room,” Megan says of her mom. For years, Cynthia wanted to work with her husband. She started the Cynthia Richard LLC in 2012, but didn’t use it until she and Rick came up with what they believed would be the perfect family business for them. Now, the whole family is involved, except for the Gelber’s son, who owns his own business selling exotic Ferraris and Lamborghinis. “We know that what you put on changes the way you feel about yourself,” Rick says. “That is why we have taken the time to create a collection that will help build your own spirit. Fashion is a process of truly discovering who you are and what makes you feel alive.” And like the five generations of their family before them, Rick and Cynthia, along with their three daughters, want to help their clientele find shoes that will make getting ready easy, effortless and exciting. They want to share their shoe collection that they say “is designed with your story at the center.” At Cynthia Richard, Rick says the family embraces certain “style truths” that they stand by. “Confidence is sexy,” Rick says. In other

words, fashion is an expression of who you are and how you feel about yourself. He says Cynthia Richard shoes are modern affordable luxury, made in Italy and Brazil. The Gelbers’ designs “command presence in the room without trying,” Rick says. “True style never tries too hard. It’s a differential factor from our competition. Cynthia Richard offers bold styles with unexpected embellishments.” But he hasn’t gotten away from the truth that his family, past and present, has been the driving force in his success. “We aim to be the top affordable luxury shoe brand recognized worldwide for elegant high-quality shoes that reflect personality and allow customers to feel they are wearing a unique extension of themselves. We aspire to develop relationships with our clients inviting them to be part of our life that embraces luxury fashion while staying deeply rooted in our love for family and authentic living,” he says. Rick says at the end of the day, his family’s brand is built around the notion that “The things you are passionate about are not random. They are your calling. And rules are meant to be broken. You don't have to settle for the status quo. First, demand more. Second, go out and get it.” CynthiaRichard.com CONTINUED >

CHOCOLATE and WINE February brings celebrations of love which frequently include the timeless treasure of wine and chocolate. Whether it’s over romantic dinners for two or between female friends at “Galentine’s” parties, wine and chocolate will be making lots of appearances this month. Use this as your guide to creating an exquisite experience for your loved ones this month. These aphrodisiacs have a lot of similarities to each other. For one, they both contain flavanols (antioxidants) and polyphenols (compounds found in plant-based food) that are good for you and have anti-inflammatory properties. But because these characteristics affect flavor, it’s somewhat challenging to pair wine and chocolate together. The more polyphenols, the more pronounced the bitter taste. For example, if you sip a delicious dry red wine alongside a hunk of dark chocolate, the wine will start to taste bitter and sour. The taste imbalance is coming from the heightened levels of flavanols (different types of tannin) found in both chocolate and wine that end up clashing against each other on your tongue. While it might sound counterintuitive, a good rule of thumb is to pair a wine that is “sweeter” than the chocolate itself. “Sweet” doesn’t refer to dessert wines alone. In the wine world, the term “sweet” is often used to denote ripe, fruit-forward flavors in a wine. These characteristics provide a nice balance to the bitter flavors of cocoa. Both wine and chocolate can have intense, dry flavors. In order to find the right balance, it’s best to choose wines that are a little bit softer and juicier than the chocolate you’re pairing it with. Fortunately, we’ve done the footwork to find several wines that partner well with chocolate. Here are our guidelines for matching chocolate with wine and a few of our favorite wine and chocolate pairings. We hope you’ll try them and then get inspired to experiment and create your own.

T I P 1 : M AT C H S U G A R WITH SUGAR What’s true of relationships is not true of wine and chocolate: opposites do not attract. When it comes to pairing chocolate and wine, you don’t want to strike a balance, you want to match sugar to sugar. Sweeter chocolate like white chocolate does better when consumed with sweeter wines and bitter chocolate like dark chocolate enjoys being paired with dryer wines. Think of it as matching sugar with sugar. Sweet white chocolate pairs well with sweet wines high in residual sugars and bitter darks with dry wines with just a hint of residual sugar. A good rule of thumb is to always pair wines that are equally or slightly more sweet than the chocolate being eaten with it.

T I P 2 : M AT C H I N T E N S I T Y WITH INTENSITY If you pair an incredibly delicately flavored dark chocolate with a full-bodied, heavy red, the intensity of the wine will destroy any of the subtlety that might have been present in the chocolate. The opposite is also true: strong-tasting chocolate will blow a delicate wine out of the water. Keep this rule of thumb in mind: light-flavored chocolates enjoy being paired with light-bodied wines and intensely flavored chocolates prefer being paired with full-bodied wines.

TI P 3: PAI R FL AVORS WITH FL AVORS Wine and chocolate both carry their own intense flavors. If your chocolate contains other ingredients such as nuts, fruit, or caramel, consider how these flavors will play with the wine. This is especially helpful to remember when enjoying truffles with wine. To avoid creating a palate power play between the two, do your best to match fruity or floral chocolates with fruity wines like Moscato or White Zinfandel. Enjoy chocolate-covered nuts alongside a nutty wine like a Madeira or Marsala. Chocolate studded with dried cranberries might pair well with a fruit-forward red with berry undertones.

a note

ON SERVING WINE AND C H O C O L AT E F L I G H T S : Just as you would with any other tasting, it’s best to start with light chocolates and wines, increasing the intensity as you go along. Start with white chocolates and light wines and save the richest, dark chocolates and wines for last. By doing this, you will keep your palate from starting out too strong and missing out on the subtle sensations found in more delicate chocolate and wine selections.

The Keys to Success

ARTICLE BY JUDY PETERS

Kim with Mary Kay Ash in 1999

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

K I M C AVA R R E T TA E A R N S HER 19TH PINK CADILL AC F R O M M A R Y K AY

Kim Cavarretta has found the keys to success. Her passion is to help others to succeed and to give the glory to God. That mission has led her to the literal keys…to 19 pink Cadillacs, during the 40 years she has been with Mary Kay Cosmetics. As a nursing school student right out of high school, Kim realized how much she loved helping people. It was because of the way she treated the patients in her care that lead her to actually leave the medical industry for Mary Kay. A patient wanted to thank her for her excellent care by rewarding her with a relaxing facial and “pampering” session with a Mary Kay consultant. She realized instantly how that made her feel loved and special and she wanted to make others feel that same way. She started as a Mary Kay consultant and after only four months, was able to quit the two jobs she had in order to work the business full-time. “As Mary Kay Ash always said, ‘It’s not where you start, but where you finish’ that counts,” says Kim. “I work from an attitude of ‘I can, I will, and I must.’ I also have people behind me, rooting for me, like my husband, Phil, as well as my mentor, Pat Fortenberry. With over 200 currently on her team, Kim truly exemplifies the Mary Kay culture and spirit, whose motto is to “Pass It On.” “Those were the last words Mary Kay Ash had spoken to me. She had also said to imagine a sign around everyone's neck that said 'make me feel special' and that's exactly what I wanted to do. I really just want to help people to feel special, to succeed in their goals, and to glorify God,” she says.

In addition to having a passion for the products and the business, along with the right attitude, Kim acknowledges that it takes a lot of hard work and perseverance. “But, during that first trip we earned to Switzerland, I looked out at the view from my room and thought, ‘every single disappointment or ‘no’ was worth it.’” A few other “keys to success” she says she has learned include dressing for success. “Dress for the position you want to be in. I would pretend Mary Kay was sitting outside of my home each time I left so I was suited up and makeup on. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” She says you’ve got to see yourself as successful. She places goal posters and visuals of her next position all over her house. “Mary Kay taught me to set goals and to work from discipline, not emotion. And to remember people like Thomas Edison, who was known for inventing the lightbulb but had 10,000 failures before that.” Finally, she says Mary Kay also taught her that people don't care how much you know, but how much you care. And, she said in order to understand people, you have to walk a mile in their shoes. Only the top 1% of the Mary Kay Independent sales force earn the use of a career car through their Mary Kay business, so there’s no doubt it takes hard work and dedication to earn that level. “I am motivated by helping other people be successful. When you help enough people, you will have success,” explains Kim. She feels that each car or trip she or her team has earned is a symbol of all the lives that have been touched through the product, and of the consultants that are living their best life with a Mary Kay career. “I have been blessed with all of this; not because I am special or any different from anyone else, but because I simply did something that all of us can do. I made a choice. It's not luck or fate. Your attitude and determination are a choice. Choose this day to do something great! Make a difference in your life and the lives of others.” Of course, with each independent beauty consultant, personal results may vary depending on time and effort. One chooses to invest in a Mary Kay business, and as with any business opportunity, various factors may affect the financial results achieved in a Mary Kay business.
