Two Local Stars WORKING HARD TO MAKE THEIR DREAMS COME TRUE ARTICLE BY JUDY PETERS
BRADY COOK Brady Cook has played football since he was in 2nd grade. “That’s really all I’ve ever wanted to do,” he says. He’s been a quarterback since he was seven, and all through high school at Chaminade. Now, as a sophomore at Mizzou, at 6’2,” 203 lbs., Brady is starting quarterback for the Tigers. “Even though I was not the starter that first season, I prepared every week just as I would have been playing and I think that paid off whenever I got opportunities to go in the game, like with Georgia, South Carolina and the Bowl game vs. Army West Point. This year, I’m looking forward to having more opportunities to play and I think we have a really good team. I love my teammates and my coaches, so I’m excited for more opportunity.” He says it was always his goal to play for Mizzou. “I’ve just always been a big Mizzou fan growing up, going to the games…several of my family members went there.” His ultimate goal this coming season is to win SEC’s Championship at Mizzou. And it should come as no surprise, that his life goal is to play in the NFL. As far as advise for those up-and-coming football players, Brady says it’s “up to you how hard you want to work. You have to outwork everyone else. That’s been my motto and I think that’s taken me a long way.”
Post-football (after a successful career in the NFL), Brady says he’d like to join the family business as a real estate developer and business owner. NATHAN LUND Nathan Lund, from O’Fallon, is also headed to Mizzou and aiming for the NFL. Nate has been playing varsity football since his freshmen year at Christian High School. As a junior, he transferred to Fort Zumwalt North, continuing to play varsity football. Going into his senior year, while attending a Lindenwood “mega-camp,” he began to get noticed by some D2 colleges, then after his first game at FZN, he started hearing from D1 scouts including Mizzou, and Old Miss. Nate says he chose Mizzou because he could be closer to home. “Being a St. Louis athlete going to Mizzou is pretty special,” he says. At 6’9” and 330 pounds, Nate plays left and right Tackle. As a freshman, he can play up to four games. Of course, he’s hoping to play those four games, but will have to wait and see. “I’m hoping I can get bigger, stronger…work with the team a lot,” says Nate. Nate also does rec leagues in basketball and loves working out. He tries to hit the gym every day at Planet Fitness in St. Peters, where he says high school students can work out for free.

While at Mizzou, he plans to major in Business or Education. He says he may even become a Meteorologist. But of course, his football aspirations are to make it to the big leagues. “I’m hoping to make it to the NFL by 2025 or 2026. I’m just going to be working really hard, getting as much play as I can and, hopefully, I will become one of the best athletes to go into the NFL.”

BAR K TAKES THE “DOG PARK” CONCEPT TO WHOLE NEW LEVEL
A DOG BAR? It’s a dog utopia…plenty of furry friends, live music, special treats, spa services, a rock wall, splash area, puppy parties, yoga and more! Bar K St. Louis, in The Grove, is a unique new destination featuring a bar, restaurant, event space and dog park. Owners Leib Dodell and Dave Hensley had a vision to create a place where people and their dogs could co-exist in a fun, entertaining and creative environment. More than just a dog park, it would be an entire pet-friendly community that offers a great food and beverage experience, and provides a one-of-akind experience for humans and dogs.

The St. Louis location, at 4565 McRee Ave., in the Botanical Heights neighborhood, opened on Nov. 19, 2021, roughly four years after Leib and Dave started the first Bar K Lab pop-up in Kansas City, Missouri. Leib says Bar K is all about bringing dogs and people together in a fun, joyful and safe way in any kind of weather. People can use it as a shared work space, where you work while your dog is being fully supervised by trained doghandlers to keep everything safe and clean; you can get your work done while they’re having fun. Neither co-owner had worked previously in the restaurant or pet industry. Leib says they were just two dog owners who noticed an opportunity to improve upon the dog park experience. Bar K features a 2-acre, fully-staffed outdoor dog park plus a 10,000-square-foot staffed indoor dog park, three bars and a restaurant for the pup’s owners, The Seresto Stage for live entertainment, Doggie DayCamp, boarding, grooming and training. There also are adoption events every weekend. Leib says that aside from potty training, socialization might be the most important thing you and your new pup do together. That's why they created Puppies Night Out, held on Thursdays 6-8 p.m. Puppies’ Night Out is an opportunity to get new puppies (age 3 to 9 months) some much needed socialization. Trainers from Kennelwood Pet Resort are on site to give training tips and answer questions about new pups' behaviors. The weekly event is free for members. For guests, it’s $10 for the first dog, and $5 for each additional dog in the pack. The restaurant at Bar K serves freshly made food that incorporates local ingredients and serves locally brewed beers. Menu items include Chicken Avocado Sandwich and Roasted Broccoli with Cranberries and Feta. But it not only caters to its human patrons…Bar K’s cooks work with nutritionists from Purina to offer healthy and tasty menu items for dogs, like "Turkey and Sweet Potato Meatballs," as well as “Doggie Flights” that allow dogs to sample three entrees of their choice. The St. Louis location also offers “Stay at Bar K,” which offers dog daycare, training and grooming. To visit Bar K is free for humans. Infant deaths. Bereaved parents. "Though I had been a maternity nurse, I had no preparation to deal with grief, at least I didn't think I had any insights into their pain," shared Sister Jane Marie Lamb, who, as a result, founded Share Pregnancy & Infant Loss Support in 1977. Share is a voluntary, non-denominational, nonprofit organization that serves families whose lives are affected by the tragic loss of a baby due to pregnancy loss, stillbirth or in the first few months of life. From the St. Charles-based headquarters and through more than 75 chapters in 29 states, the group continues to execute Sister Jane Marie's vision and legacy by providing support for bereaved families in their darkest times. Sarah Lawrenz, Share executive director, says every child's life is precious. "The hopes and dreams for children are filled with anticipation and joy. Suddenly, those dreams of parents who lose a child are completely shattered, and the world around them shaken. Parents find it difficult trying to make it alone. We as caregivers are privileged to journey with families as they put the pieces back together." Share's proactive programs seek to surround parents with compassionate support, should it be needed. For example, Sarah says the nonprofit's staffers over the last two years have trained 765 medical professionals and caregivers to provide improved care for families who have experienced the loss of a baby. Four times each year, Share's local partner, Baue Funeral Home, holds a burial free of charge for families who have lost their baby before 20 weeks. Sarah says Share also hosts several remembrance events throughout the year, recognizing families' ongoing need to honor their babies.
Share just organized a guest speaker session on July 28 in St. Charles with registered dietitian Rachel Rajano, who provided cooking tips for supporting both mind and body. A Journaling speaker is scheduled for Aug. 10 from 6-8 p.m. at Spencer Road Library Community Commons in St. Peters. Sierra Dean, a bereaved mother and owner of Dean Diaries Publishing, will explain how to use guided journals, as well as the benefits of journaling through grief. Guests can register online. An upcoming event in which to participate or lend support is the 21th Annual Share Walk for Remembrance & Hope. It will be held Oct. 15 at Frontier Park in St. Charles. Registration deadline is Aug. 21. Participants can join virtually or in-person. More than 3,000 people are expected to gather. This annual event provides families who've experienced the death of their baby an opportunity to openly acknowledge and remember among family, friends and the bereavement community, says Sarah Purcell, Share marketing director. "The event also allows families to walk the steps their precious children will never get to take. Families are welcome to bring flowers to place at the base of the Baby Memorial Wall where babies’ names will be printed," she adds. Sarah says everyone who registers by Aug. 21 will receive a T-shirt with their baby’s name on the back. CREATING INDIVIDUAL BIRTHDAY MEMORIES CELEBRATIONS FOR CHILDREN, YOUTH IN SHELTERS ARE HONORED BY VOLUNTEERS OF LOCAL NONPROFIT

Creating fun, memorable birthday experiences for toddlers, children and young adults in homeless and domestic violence shelters is the mission of St. Louis metropolitan-based volunteers spearheaded by "Chief Birthday Officer" Rolanda Finch. As founder of It’s Your Birthday, Inc., Rolanda says the group is proud of how individualized they've been able to make each recipient's birthday. "We believe all children should have a happy birthday, no matter their situation. Our goal is to ensure each child, and sometimes also a parent, feels special. Help from communities surely helps that happen." The group works through St. Louis area school districts, homeless facilities and domestic violence shelters, in addition to

similar charitable shelters in Cape Girardeau, Hannibal and Springfield. Rolanda says they assist with children 1 to 22 years old. On average, 15 to 25 birthdays are acknowledged or fulfilled each month. Since being launched in 2014, Rolanda says there have been nearly 1,700 memories created through this nonprofit. "Children in shelters are very confused, IYBI helps bring a sense of normalcy during this time in their young lives," she adds. In observance of the nonprofit's eighth 'organizational birthday' during September, the following are eight ways to assist the group: • Participate in IYBI fundraisers, such as toy drives, or donate new toys for birthday boxes. • Sponsor a Birthday-in-a-Box ($150 value) for a shelter or mom to provide the birthday memory to her child. • Cover the cost of a mom or shelter to shop for a child’s birthday gift from a curated Amazon Wish List. • Fund gifts for new moms who give birth while in shelters. • Create from-scratch birthday cards and inspirational cards, which is a great way for a group, such as Girl Scouts, to complete a project together. (No personal names, group titles or details should be included by creators.) • Provide $15 fast food gift cards or hygiene products/personal care items for older recipients. • Volunteer as small group or individual to help organize IYBI office, either administratively or toy/box reasons. • Sponsor a Birthday Surprise ($50 value) or other specific initiative. Rolanda says with a bit of training, volunteers also can become "Birthday Heroes," who represent the nonprofit as the primary contact with a designated shelter and who plan birthday options for each child. "We also are seeking new board members," she adds. "The laughter and smiles we create are priceless." Donations can be mailed to P.O. Jonathan Rawlings HEADED TO THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Jonathan Rawlings is a very impressive young man. Jon, 14, is an athlete who, as a member of the USA Down Syndrome National Swimming Team, just qualified for the World Championships being held in Portugal in October. When his older brother, a pre-med student at The University of Alabama, visited Jon’s school (Orchard Farm Middle) to help make the announcement, Jon beamed as the whole school cheered and then lined the school hallways to “high five” him as he ran past. Even “Louie,” the polar bear mascot of the St. Louis Blues, was on hand to participate in the big day! He starts as a Freshman at Orchard Farm H.S. in the fall. Jon started swimming as a “water baby” when he was six months old. He joined the Blanchette Swim Team about seven years ago and has been competing ever since. Jon says his favorite stroke is the butterfly. The 25M Fly was his best qualifying event for the World finals (24.79 seconds). He will most likely compete in that event in Portugal, as well as free style and a relay. The coach makes that final determination this summer. There are only two swimmers from Missouri who will be competing in the World Championships. The other is Maggie Scherder of Troy, MO. Jon says he works out, lifting weights, every week with his dad at the St. Charles County YMCA. He swims five days/week, including with the Special Olympics Sea
Turtles team each winter at the St. Peters Rec Plex. He just joined a higher-level swim team, FAST, in order to swim the longer, 50-meter course. Believe it or not, Jon also participates in other sports and hobbies. He just earned a Green Belt in Karate with a goal of Black Belt, plays baseball and basketball, and loves to sing and dance. He wants to be involved in choir this upcoming year…he says with a big smile. “I’m not shy and I want to perform. I love music!” Jon is a great student as well and is planning to attend college. “I would like to build my own gym and be a personal trainer,” he says. Jon truly is inspiring. We wish him much luck at the 10th Bi-Annual World Championship in Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal, October 15-23, 2022.
