LIFESTYLE LETTER

Love Local.

February 2022 PUBLISHER

Gordon Montgomery gordon.montgomery@citylifestyle.com Kelley Lamm | kelley.lamm@citylifestyle.com

February is “the month of love” – a time for Valentine's Day and remembering all those we love. It’s also a good time to show support to those who enhance and/or serve our community in some way…thus, our theme of LOVE LOCAL. Whether it’s participating in events like a Blues hockey game, cookie decorating with your kids at a local bakery, or supporting a family member running for “Ms. Senior Missouri America,” we hope you share your passions with those you love, and support theirs! Psychologists tell us dating is vital to a relationship. So, we’re helping you out with a few ideas for Date Night in Local Experiences. You can also find fun things to do in the area in our City Scene feature and our Events page. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it’s easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines (and perhaps your favorite sports game) this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us on Facebook. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local makers and artists right here in our community. We would also like to thank our City Lifestyle Team, talented contributors and loyal advertising partners for their continued support in 2022, as well as welcome some new advertising partners who are joining us this new year! We appreciate you and all you do to help continue building our community. As always we are inspired by you. Love and respect,

2021 Ms Missouri Senior America Carolyn Schlueter

Those who have reached “the age of elegance” have a unique opportunity to share their talent, their inspiring life philosophies, and their inner and outer beauty at the Ms. Missouri Senior America Pageant. The Missouri Pageant Alumnae Club (MPAC) is a nonprofit organization that sponsors the annual pageant for women, age 60-plus, that fosters their talent and personal development through charitable giving, community service and performances. T he women compete in four categories: personal interview with judges before the pageant begins, poise in an evening gown, a brief recitation of their philosophy of life, and a talent presentation. Carolyn Schlueter, of St. Charles County, was named Ms. Missouri Senior America 2021. She has a smile and a personality that lights up a room. She is also multi-talented. During her working career, Carolyn was executive secretary to August A. (Gussie) Busch Jr., president/ CEO of Anheuser-Busch, until he retired. She currently enthusiastically pursues her three passions in life... photography, music and painting and is an active member of the St. Louis Camera Club, St. Peters Cultural Art Centre and Lake Saint Louis Artist's Association. Music has always played a big part in Carolyn's life. In addition to performing in various piano venues in the area, she says she treasures the memories of performing with the Belleville Philharmonic Orchestra on the oboe.

A nother hobby she and her significant other truly enjoyed was competing professionally in Swing Dance Competitions locally and across the country. She is also a three-time cancer survivor. You can read more about Caroyn on the Pageant’s website at MsMissouriSenior.org. The hosting of the Ms. Missouri Senior America Pageant is only one of the many philanthropic activities of MPAC. Over the years, the organization has donated thousands of dollars to several charities in Missouri. Former Ms. Missouri Senior America winners stay active in the organization even after their year is completed. They continue to perform at Showcases and Former Queen shows, make public appearances for charities, and help in publicizing the activities of the Missouri Pageant Alumnae Club. The women of MPAC are available to entertain at senior centers, retirement communities, events, and special occasions. Proceeds from Showcase performances go to local and statewide charities. Auditions for Ms. Missouri Senior America will be held February 8, 2022. The pageant is May 1, 2022, at the Florissant Civic Center. The winner of the Ms. Missouri Senior America Pageant represents our state in the Ms. Senior America Pageant - the world's first and foremost pageant to emphasize and give honor to women who have reached the “Age of Elegance." For information, contact Susan Pellegrino, State Pageant Co-Director, at msmosenior@gmail.com or 314-640-5789.

St. Louis Blues Hockey Head Coach First in Fan Line Among Bluenatics and the Arch City

“I absolutely love the whole process of being a head coach and part of a team,” divulges St. Louis Blues ice hockey coach Craig Berube, who’s enthusiastically embraced the hockey lifestyle his entire life. Craig, whose father played hockey until he was 81 years old and whose uncles coached him, says it’s “just what we all do.” The retired Canadian professional winger played in 1,054 games between 1983-2004, scoring 61 goals and 98 assists, with the following teams: Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, Washington Capitals and New York Islanders.

“Being in that locker-room is where so much happens, everything really, where decisions are made. It’s where we instill that motivating, ‘don’t be satisfied’ philosophy,” says Craig. As an emergency fill-in Blues coach in 2018, the Alberta native reassembled a bottom-of-theleague St. Louis team, directed a Gloria-winning streak and famously led them to their ‘Cinderella’ Stanley Cup victory. Since then, Craig served as the Blues head coach. Craig’s equal love in his life is new bride, Dominique Pino. She’s a native of Italy and a great cook, he says. When he’s not in St. Louis, they anchor their family in the Philadelphia area. He’s a huge (Baltimore) Ravens football fan, and before that, he enjoyed watching the style in which the (San Francisco) 49ers, led by quarterback Joe Montana, played the game. He says the Blues’ players are “the best to be around,” because they practice comradery every day. During games, he adds that their style is to dominate puck possession time by controlling and attacking together.

Cra ig ’s Ot her L ove s Be side s Hockey: Craig’s Other Loves Besides Hockey: • Paul Manno’s in Chesterfield. “I’ve tried them all. I love this restaurant. Steaks are my favorite meal.” • Daytrips with his family. • Golfing in summer. “My buddies and I play competitively and for fun.” • His preferred pizza style? Thin. “Peno (Peno Soul Food) makes a great pizza.” • Music from the late 1960s to 1970s, ranging from Bob Dylan and Neal Young to The Stones, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. “I’ve loved music since I was a kid. I’m not necessarily a country music lover, but I like Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash.”

• Fly fishing. “I went fly fishing in Vail for the first time in 2021, and discovered I really liked the relaxation it brings.” • Working out. “I was a tough kid who had to be doing something all the time. I just look forward to working out, and get antsy if I can’t do that.” • Custom suits from Bespoke Apparel in Clayton, especially for NHL games. As a fashion designer, his wife makes his ties, but for suits, he “only goes to David (Corbitt).” • Ease of mobility. “It’s easy to get around in St. Louis, from little pockets of Clayton, Chesterfield and Frontenac. It’s a great, smaller town. The people make St. Louis.” “St. Louis is a wonderful sports team city. People here are more passionate. The Blues fans support their team, no matter what. People still thank me for the Cup,” he adds.

During presstime, Head Coach Craig became just the seventh coach in National Hockey League history to win 200 games behind the bench AND play in at least 1,000 NHL games!

sweet treats February is an especially good time to think of all the “sweet things” in your life. Hopefully, your loved ones come to mind first, then the other joys in your life…hobbies, friends, memories, careers, favorite desserts, sports, and passions of all kinds. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, and in honor of all the sweet things in life, we chose to feature a few of the local bakeries where you can find beautiful and delicious sweet things for your special someone…or satisfy your own sweet tooth.

Sweet Things Bakery in New Town-St. Charles makes baked goods the old-fashioned way…by hand, in small batches, using only the best natural ingredients. “We started the business out of a rented commercial kitchen baking for corporate customers, caterers and farmers markets,” says owner Beth Thompson. “We were very successful at the Farmers Market in Ferguson and with the help of some community leaders there we opened our storefront in the retail district December 2006 (called Cose Dolci Bakery). In 2017, we decided we wanted to grow the business. Because we consider ourselves to be a neighborhood style bakery, we thought New Town would be a good fit for us, so we moved the business there and opened our store in July 2017.” She says some of their best-selling sweets are carrot cake, key lime tarts, peanut butter cookies, salted caramel cookies, decorated sugar cookies, scones and biscotti.

Sweetology

O’Fallon

Sweetology, in O’Fallon, Mo., is known as “the St. Louis area’s premiere destination for interactive cake, cookie and cupcake decorating.” A full-time staff of Sweetologists are always on hand to answer questions and offer decorating tutorials to help guests make the most of their cake decorating experience. There are also a variety of cake decorating classes and kids club programs offered throughout the year, as well as cake decorating camps for kids in the summer. “No reservation necessary, you can walk in and decorate any time. We’re open seven days a week,” says Owner Kara Newmark, who opened her first store in St. Louis in 2014. Now, 7 years and 3 stores later, Sweetology has opened its E-commerce store and is shipping the fun nationally. Kara’s dream was to capture the magic she experienced as a young child when her mom decorated her 12th birthday cake inspired by the cover of Seventeen magazine. She says Sweetology isn’t about the cake. Rather, it is about creating those experiences and moments that bring us closer and marking the milestones with memories. “So, if you just need a quick fix for your sweet tooth, a unique hostess gift or a pick-me-up for a friend, we’ve got you covered…with cupcakes to go and a wide variety of traditional and premium bulk candy.” Sweetology Cookies
