CULINARY CREATIONS
bringing back the smörgåsbord ARTICLE BY MEL BOBAN
CHARCUTERIE IS A WIDESPREAD TREND THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, BUT THE SMÖRGÅSBORD IS A UNIQUE ITERATION OF SERVING MEALS AT A PARTY THAT CAN BE USED TO REALLY ELEVATE CELEBRATIONS. Originally debuted in 1939 at the New York World’s Fair exhibition, this iconic Scandinavian meal presentation is a great way to inspire holiday meals. Scandinavia and Sweden, in particular, have a special place in my heart, with my grandma’s relatives immigrating from Småland, Sweden and having studied abroad there in college. I had the amazing experience firsthand of the way their gatherings focus on heartfelt connection. The center of a Swedish holiday celebration is often the smörgåsbord, plum full of goodies. What exactly makes a smörgåsbord? It stretches further than America's charcuterie boards -- incorporating hot and cold dishes in a buffet-style setup. It’s a giant grazing table for guests to snack from throughout the evening, sparking conversation and encouraging mingling. Think about a charcuterie board-initiated next level, stretching across the entire table. When incorporating a smörgåsbord style serving setup, take color into mind. I like to think of the dishes as decor themselves -- adding greenery or berries for pops of red and green. Fruits, such as oranges, pears, cranberries or even apple slices, make for beautiful coloring as well as holiday candy, cinnamon stocks and pine cones. Decorative napkins and serve ware also can be displayed with small decor items, such as evergreen sprigs, bells, ornaments and festive glassware. Smörgåsbords give everyone a chance to be creative and to impress guests. Cheers!

LOOKING FOR THE HOLIDAY GIFT OF A LIFETIME? Let’s talk luxury! The sky is the limit in your dream car from Holman. Holman Motorcars
pass by from afar, but the magnitude of what happens inside is impressive. With sales nearing $100 million annually, Holman holds a solid book of repeat and new clientele looking for the best of the best in luxury and exotics. Newly known as Holman Motorcars since March of 2020, most of the same staff members remain and have decades of experience in this business - they’re passionate about helping you build your dream car - even if it has to arrive via international freight in a special, bolted crate. Holman has a sister location in Ft. Lauderdale, so their national footprint enables them to offer VIP experiences from coast-to-coast. Brian Lee Tull, Holman’s General Sales Manager spends his day buzzing around their campus delivering top notch service to their clients - from coordinating bespoke customer orders and scheduling international deliveries in time for Christmas. Yet, when we managed to track him down he was calm, cool and collected in describing Holman and their values. Holman Motorcars prioritizes delivering an exceptional experience for their customers. This starts with the culture difference that can be felt – where people come first and feel valued. Holman Motorcars is part of the Holman Automotive family with 40 dealerships spanning the country. What began in 1924 as a single Ford store, has grown into one of the premier automotive groups. Holman Automotive was just ranked the #2 dealership group in the 2021 Automotive Reputation Report. LOCAL’S CHOICE (CONTINUED) is a still family-owned business – with state-of-the art facilities and a reputation of exceptional service. Holman Motorcars offer new cars from six ultra-luxury lines, including Aston Martin, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Lotus and Rolls-Royce. They also have one of the finest collections of Certified pre-owned vehicles as well as off-brands such as McLaren, Porsche and Ferrari. You can shop online, visit the showroom or you can start from scratch and create the car of your wildest dreams. “As Bentley says, there are a billion possible configurations,” Brian explained. What’s new in luxury? They have a new Snow Quartz Pearl Flying Spur that you have to see to appreciate just how beautiful a simply-white car can be as well as a Verde Aries STO (stands for "Super Trofeo Omologato") that might just be one of the coolest colors you’ll ever see on a sports car. Brian says that their brands’ luxury SUVs including Bentayga, DBX, Urus and Cullinan are in the highest of demands, with many families looking for luxury and functionality combined. Lotus is teasing their own electric SUV codenamed the Type 132. Electric, to no surprise, is becoming more popular and many brands such as Bentley are offering hybrid options. Electrification is on the horizon, but even as automation revs up for many car brands, luxury remains handmade. The brands they offer are always created meticulously by expert designers and craftspeople, with the highest attention to detail in each stitch. In fact, Brian feels the quality is only getting better over time. He says that Sir Henry Royce's ethos was always to "take the best that exists and make it better and when it doesn't exist, design it." In a true holiday spirit, Holman is unique to luxury car sales in their efforts to give back (to the tune of over $3 million annually). Their employees, who are treated with the same utmost respect as their clientele, continually donate to United Way St. Louis, giving back to the community directly around them. Holman has donated over $1 million to the United Way nationally each year for the past five years. Holman employees are supported with paid time off to volunteer, banking over a thousand hours of time giving back. Holman Motorcars recently hosted a Lamborghini x Movember event in spirited competition with 90

other Lamborghini dealers worldwide as part of a global activation. Local Lamborghini owners decked their cars with mustaches and helped raise awareness and funds for men’s health, suicide prevention, and cancer. Lamborghini St. Louis ranked #13 out of 90 Lamborghini dealerships worldwide. Just goes to show that it’s the people and the engagement that counts. What’s happening the week we interviewed Brian? A special delivery for a client on the Nice List - a $4 million 2022 Bugatti Pur Sport. One of sixty for the world. These special hyper-cars are flown in from the factory (Bugatti is in Molsheim, France) and arrive in large wooden crates, waiting to be revealed. It’s an exciting day when one arrives! Earlier this year, the dealership received a delivery of two Lamborghini Sian hyper-cars at the same time, rare gems of only 63 made in the world. We can’t wait to hear more about the orders placed for the holidays…are you adding any of these to your Santa list, too?

Women & W h iskey ARTICLE BY JUDY PETERS
MANY WILL BE ENTERTAINING FOR THE HOLIDAYS AND SPREADING HOLIDAY CHEER BY SHARING IN A COCKTAIL OR TWO, INCLUDING UNIQUE WHISKEY COCKTAILS. There's a misconception that whiskey is a "man's drink" but that is quickly changing. Women have always been involved in the whiskey distilling industry. What’s quickly changing is that they’re finally getting recognized for the contributions they’ve made through time…and, they’re reshaping what remains a male-dominated profession. Distilling used to be considered “women’s work,” part of their duties around the hearth and home. In his book, "Whiskey Women," Fred Minnick writes that women in medieval Europe used their distilling acumen to make medicine, but were also persecuted when those same skills were denounced as black magic. That tradition continued on the early American frontier. Catherine Spears Frye Carpenter, a widowed mother and distiller in early 19th-century Kentucky, was the first to record a recipe for sour-mash whiskey. As modern, industrial distilling emerged after the Civil War, and as gender roles became more rigid, women played less of a role in whiskey production, though they left their stamp in other ways. In the 1950s, Margie Samuels designed the bottle and label for her husband’s new whiskey brand, Maker's Mark, and even developed its signature red-wax seal. Today, women represent almost 30 percent of whiskey drinkers in the U.S. (up from 15 percent in the 1990s) and are responsible for up to 70 percent of alcohol purchasing decisions for the home. “Women have embarked on a renewed journey of rediscovering the rich dimensions of whiskey over the past few years,” says Whiskey Sales Ambassador Rebecca Babb of St. Louis Distillery. “There has been an explosion of creativity in producing complex, flavorful spirits, attitudes have shifted, and the drinkability of whiskey continues to emerge; thus, the love affair with the many varieties of liquid gold is flourishing. Women have extremely refined palates and are finding they enjoy the flavor, the burn, and the lingering finish of whiskey when compared with other spirits.” So during this holiday season, or when you need to raise your spirits this winter, whip up some of these unique whiskey concoctions that really put the spirit in this special season. Here are just a few samples of some of the whiskey cocktails you can find in this area, or make at home using these recipes: 28

GIVING BACK
Gratefully
ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES
GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy

PARTING THOUGHTS HON. THOMAS P. HANNEGAN, 51, LEAVES A LEGACY
ARTICLE BY JUDY PETERS
TRIBUTE TO A MAN & H I S C O M M U N IT Y TOM HANNEGAN TRULY CARED ABOUT HIS COMMUNITY. As a lifetime St. Charles resident, business owner, volunteer, and for the last five years as State Representative, he set a life goal to improve his community in whatever ways he could, and to promote this great area to others. One way he was able to highlight all he loved about his community was through publishing StreetScape Magazine for 13 years. He and his team also produced the Beyond the Best Business Awards to recognize local businesses, as well as several fashion shows throughout the years, which helped local charities. The non-profit closest to his heart was the Boys & Girls Club of St. Charles County, where he served
