FROM YOUR FRIENDS AT HAPPY

Women at the Heart of Springfield

There is something truly special about taking a moment to recognize the women in our lives who make our days more beautiful. Whether it is our mothers, daughters, friends, colleagues, or even familiar faces we see around town, these are the women who enrich our days and remind us what community looks like.

With Mother’s Day this month, our thoughts naturally turn to the incredible women who have made an unforgettable impact on us. It’s the women who offer love, wisdom, and support in the simplest but most meaningful of ways.

In my role here, I have had the privilege of meeting many amazing women. Through listening to their stories and seeing the passion they have for what they do and the people they serve, I have been challenged to better myself for the sake of my family and my community. I’ve been challenged to make a difference, to give my all to what I believe in, and to truly take ownership of the part I have to play in keeping Springfield vibrant and flourishing.

This month, as we celebrate these remarkable women, I also want to encourage you to support local businesses owned by women in our community. From the fitness experts at Achieving Your Best and the composers who color our world with music to the healthcare innovators at Breast Imaging of the Ozarks, women in Springfield are making an indelible mark on their community.

I also encourage you to take a moment this month to recognize women in your life who have been a personal blessing or encouragement. Send a text, make a phone call, or arrange a video chat. These are simple but powerful ways to brighten someone’s day and remind them just how much they are loved.

Here’s to the women who make life so much richer, and happy Mother’s Day to the ladies who inspire us every day!

Meet the women of Achieving Your Best: Four health professions with a passion for health

WHAT HAS WORKING AT AYB MEANT TO YOU?

Honestly, I wouldn’t be where I am today without AYB. When my husband and I moved to Missouri, I kept hearing about AYB and something inside my heart just knew it’d be a perfect fit. After my first phone call with Cassie (the owner), I knew it was right. She was so understanding about my season of life and made my dream employment a real possibility.

Now I get to walk alongside women, pre- and post-partum, as they learn how to train in ways that support their bodies and find nutritional balance in everyday life. Every woman’s journey looks different.

I love creating a welcoming space where each client feels supported.

WHAT INDICATORS OF HEALTH DESERVE MORE ATTENTION?

Core strength, pelvic floor health, and breathing deserve so much more attention. During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles separate as baby grows, which can disrupt stability and the nervous system. When we restore core function alongside the pelvic floor and healthy breathing patterns, we often see less pain, reduced leakage, improved posture, and stronger, more supported joints overall.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY TO AYB.

I grew up in St. Louis and have been in Springfield for 20 years. Cassie’s kids went to school with mine, so we got to know each other that way and quickly became friends. In 2012, she helped train me for my first half marathon and I became increasingly interested in AYB. Not too long after, I started helping at the front desk and I’ve been here ever since.

WHAT PATTERNS DO YOU SEE AMONG WOMEN WHO SUCCESSFULLY BUILD HEALTHY HABITS?

I see a lot of consistency in those who are truly successful here. Because AYB is smaller, not a franchise, it becomes a community atmosphere and people tend to stay. Some clients have been with us since 2017. The quality of the staff is high and people recognize that, so when you couple that with a dedication to being consistent in your habits, that’s when you see success.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER AYB?

When I was in college, I had a professor discuss working in a private practice. In her conversation, she mentioned that one of the most successful ones was a small business in Springfield: Achieving Your Best. When I heard that, and the fact that it was female-owned and operated, I knew I wanted to be part of it. This is my dream job, and I love every single person I work with – co-workers and clients.

WE OFTEN EQUATE HEALTH WITH APPEARANCE OR WEIGHT. HOW DO YOU DEFINE STRENGTH FOR WOMEN TODAY?

I have come to define strength as a balance of contentment and confidence. Contentment is celebrating your capabilities and blessings without comparing them to others’. Confidence is knowing that you are in control of the “controllables”: food, hydration, movement, etc. Only when we look at both our internal and external wellness can we really see a true reflection of health and strength.

AT AYB, WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HELP WOMEN ADAPT THEIR HEALTH ROUTINES AS THEIR BODIES CHANGE?

Adapting your health routines as we age is vital for wellbeing and continued progress. It’s easy to miss the healthy balance you need for our changing bodies. There is no one-size-fits-all way to navigate this, though. Learning to work with your body and being curious about what it is telling you, no matter what stage you’re in can help you feel more in control and empowered. We are here to help you figure out what your body is telling you, what it needs and how to work best with those needs, which will ultimately get you where you want to be.

HOW CAN WOMEN LEARN TO WORK WITH THEIR BODIES RATHER THAN AGAINST THEM IN THESE TRANSITIONS?

We must be aware of where we are physically and what our habits are – that is a great starting point. When you figure out what thriving looks like for you, our team can help you build a clear path to getting there. Once you know where you are and where you want to go, keeping goals simple and small is key. You don’t have to have it all figured out in order to get started. When things don’t work out, take it as an opportunity to listen to and learn from your body instead of blaming yourself. Our bodies are amazing and they’ll respond when we give them what they need: appropriate movement, nourishing food, connection with others, purpose, adequate rest, and fun. When you work with your body, you truly can achieve your best life!

Going out of town for the holidays? Make it a vacation and transformation.

Boarding doesn’t have to be a break from progress. While you’re away, your dog can enjoy enrichment, structure, and professional training in a safe, fun, and caring environment.

Reserve your spot early — spaces fill fast during the holidays.

Amanda and Logan Lackey, owners of Breast Imaging of the Ozarks, offer women a gentle approach to breast health

Breast Imaging

For many women, the words mammogram, breast imaging, and breast health carry an undercurrent of anxiety. The sterile exam rooms, the long and uncomfortable wait time, and the delay in receiving test results can make a vulnerable experience even more intimidating. However, Amanda Lackey, MD, husband Logan Lackey, MD, MBA, and the team at Breast Imaging of the Ozarks are working to change that narrative, one patient experience at a time.

Amanda’s path to a career in breast imaging was shaped through early experiences of watching her father help women as a radiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Growing up, Amanda recalls that she noticed a steady stream of thank-you cards and handwritten notes received by her father - many from women who were expressing their gratitude for detecting their breast cancer early.

Without a clear specialty in mind, Amanda pursued a degree in health sciences, later discovering a passion for radiology, one that reminded her of her father’s work. It soon became clear that a her focus would be towards bringing the same life-changing experiences to women as her father through a career in breast imaging.

After returning to school, graduating, and completing her residency, Amanda and Logan, her classmate turned husband, both knew that they wanted to walk with women along their health journeys in a personal and impactful way.

Though their paths into medicine differed, Amanda and Logan’s commitment and timing closely mirrored one another. Logan, born and raised in Arkansas, had grown up knowing that he wanted to be a physician. He earned his MBA from the University of Arkansas, studied abroad, and ultimately entered medical school at the same time as Amanda. Both felt the pull towards the niche part of women’s health, and both committed to the opportunity to serve women together.

From 2016 to 2021, the couple provided excellent medical care in the Ozarks but began to feel limited beyond their clinical skills. Aspects of the patient experience that they longed to enhance, such as scheduling constraints, crowded waiting rooms, and rushed appointments, all left them feeling that they wanted to offer more.

“THE CENTER IS CALMSOFT

MUSIC

PLAYS AND

ESSENTIAL

OILS ARE DIFFUSED.

INSTEAD OF THIN, UNCOMFORTABLE GOWNS, EACH PATIENT RECEIVES A PLUSH, SPA-LIKE ROBE, AND THE ENTIRE APPOINTMENT IS ROOTED IN THE ART OF GENTLENESS.”

That realization became the foundation for Breast Imaging of the Ozarks.

Amanda began to notice that Springfield had limited options for breast imaging, with even fewer facilities that prioritized the patient experience as much as they did the clinical care. When the opportunity arose, the Lackeys decided to step out on their own with the vision of creating a place that felt less like a hospital and more like a sanctuary for women.

Today, that vision is evident the moment patients arrive. The center is calm -  soft music plays and essential oils are diffused. Instead of thin, uncomfortable gowns, each patient receives a plush, spalike robe, and the entire appointment is rooted in the art of gentleness. All of this, Amanda explains, helps women want to come back year after year without dread, which helps them catch things or detect abnormalities early.

One of the Lackey’s most impactful differences is their commitment to same-day results. Instead of waiting days for a letter or a phone call, every patient speaks directly with a radiologist before leaving. Results are reviewed immediately after the imaging, questions are answered in real time, and if further imaging is needed, it often happens during the same visit. The reduction in anxiety and delayed appointments is profound, and the ability of the Lackeys and their team to move quickly can be lifesaving.

Amanda and Logan also take great pride in their commitment to utilizing high-quality and technologically advanced diagnostic tools and procedures that are not widely available in the region. Combined with the highly trained and experienced staff of the center, Breast Imaging of the Ozarks is becoming a practice that is synonymous with trust in the community.

Outside of their work, the Lackeys remain grounded in family including their seven children. From spending time together as a family to staying fit and active, wellness remains a central part of their lives. While Logan prefers golf and jiu-jitsu, the occasional day at the spa is what helps Amanda release the emotional and mental weight of running a business and advocating for women’s health in the community.

Looking ahead, the couple hopes that they will be able to continue to grow and expand their practice while remaining rooted in a gentle, highly individualized experience for each patient. Plans include adding another mammography unit and expanded services, all while continuing to set the standard for what an otherwise anxiety-ridden experience for women can look like.

As they continue serving Springfield, Amanda and Logan are proving that professional precision in medicine and a gentle, compassionate approach to women’s health can and should coexist. Because for them, care delivered with intentionality and personal connection is how medicine is best practiced.

Putting Down Roots

HOW JASMINE LEBLANC IS REBUILDING

LOCAL FOOD IN SOUTHWEST MISSOURI

Located less than 20 miles northwest of Springfield, the community of Ash Grove sits between farmland and subdivisions. Here, single mom and homesteader Jasmine LeBlanc is building relationships between farmers and rural counties, driven by her conviction that local food can strengthen bodies and communities.

Jasmine’s story, deeply rooted in faith, didn’t start with a business plan. It started with a calling.

Originally from Vermont, Jasmine grew up amidst the steady rhythms of self-sufficiency. In 2020, she began to feel nudged toward a more intentional form of homesteading.

At first, Jasmine assumed that nudge would keep her in Vermont, but in June 2020, an unexpected door opened that landed her in Fordland, Missouri. By November of the same year, she and her four children had moved onto a multi-acre piece of land.

As she added livestock to her homestead and learned the differences between the soil of Vermont and Missouri, production grew alongside her desire to connect with the community. When she began to look for an avenue to connect, short term ideas were met with obstacles. Still, Jasmine refused to give up on the momentum in her spirit.

Through efforts with other local producers and farmers, Jasmine connected with a local organizer and officially joined the farmers market scene in 2021. Customers were eager for local honey, produce, and farm goods, and by 2022 she was asked to take over leadership of the Ash Grove Farmers Market.

It was then that her vision began to take shape. Drawing on her experience in Vermont, one of the national leaders in small scale, diversified agriculture, Jasmine saw how far the local food infrastructure could advance with effort. Missouri had talented producers but lacked systems to efficiently connect farmers with rural communities. While farmers markets are beloved by many in Missouri, limitations impacted the consistency with which customers could engage. She noticed farmers giving up entire days for a few hours of sales and customers eager to buy locally produced food and goods but unable to shop during narrow market windows.

Under her leadership, the Ash Grove Farmers Market became a community destination. Attendance surged. But the structural challenges remained, echoing concerns she heard from farmers across the region. Those conversations eventually led her to the board of the Missouri Farmers Market Association, where she discovered that these barriers were statewide.

Roots and Harvest was born in response.

Opening at the end of 2024, Jasmine launched Missouri’s first farm stop - the eighteenth in the country. Unlike traditional farmers markets, the farm stop offers a year-round venue where local producers can sell without sacrificing entire days, and customers can shop during consistent hours throughout the week. The shop began to spark moments of discovery.

“People are genuinely surprised to learn that all of these foods and products are produced right here in and around our community,” Jasmine says. “Awareness is a powerful tool.”

Her vision does not stop at commerce. Roots and Harvest has expanded into food access initiatives, including a free fridge program that makes local produce and dairy products available to community members regardless of income.

“People are genuinely surprised to learn that all of these foods and products are produced right here in and around our community.”
“By bringing in produce from trusted regional growers, she helps these markets offer a fuller selection, keeps food dollars circulating locally, and allows outlying communities to experience the quality and freshness of locally grown food.”

Recognizing that many small and remote farmers markets struggle with limited vendor participation, she began transporting locally grown produce to deeply rural markets, expanding both variety and access for shoppers who might otherwise be limited in their options. By bringing in produce from trusted regional growers, she helps these markets offer a fuller selection, keeps food dollars circulating locally, and allows outlying communities to experience the quality and freshness of locally grown food without traveling long distances.

Jasmine has also embraced the growing food as medicine movement, aligning with Missouri legislation promoting nutrition-based health interventions. Through partnerships with Citizens Memorial Hospital and Ozarks Community Hospital, Roots and Harvest supports CSA programs for employee wellness and is helping develop produce prescription initiatives across fourteen counties of southwest Missouri.

Her work has not gone unnoticed by regional leaders. In 2024, Jasmine received the Missouri Department of Agriculture’s Farm to Table Award, recognizing her leadership in promoting local food systems statewide.

Jasmine believes every purchase of a locally grown good is a vote for local economies. And in Ash Grove, that concept is taking root.

A THOUGHTFUL REFRESH

Howliday Pet Resort gets a fresh look while moving forward with purpose, staying rooted in community

After more than a decade of serving local pet owners, the team behind Howliday Pet Resort is stepping into an exciting new season; one of continued growth, a refreshed brand and the same trusted care that has defined the business since their beginning. Owner Summer Gerhardt shares about their journey, what clients can expect from the pet resort, and exciting collaborations for the thriving business.

HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY WITH THE BUSINESS BEGIN?

YOU RECENTLY REBRANDED. WHAT INSPIRED THAT DECISION?

After more than a decade, an opportunity came along that made it feel like the right time for a fresh look. We introduced a new name—Howliday Pet Resort—along with a new logo, but we kept our signature green color because it has always represented who we are. The rebrand isn’t about changing our identity; it’s about presenting it in a way that reflects where we are today.

We celebrated 12 years in business this May, but our connection to the community started even earlier. A close friend of ours opened the business, and my husband, Brandon, worked for him during that first year. When he decided he wanted to sell, the opportunity came up for us to purchase it. Because we already believed in the vision and had firsthand experience with how the business operated, it felt like a natural next step for our family.

WHAT SERVICES DOES HOWLIDAY PET RESORT OFFER TODAY?

We provide dog boarding, daycare, light grooming, and training services. Those core offerings have remained very consistent over the years. Clients know what to expect when they bring their pets to us and that consistency has helped build long-term trust within the community.

WHAT DOES THE PAST YEAR REPRESENT FOR THE BUSINESS?

This past year has been a strong one for growth, both in the number of pets we serve and in the systems we’ve put in place to better support our clients. One of the most exciting things though, was our renewed collaboration with K9s for Camo, an organization that trains service dogs for veterans. I got to be a part of helping build this nonprofit in 2017 and then stepped away for a few years. Now that I’m serving as Vice President of the board, there has been a wonderful path forged for Howliday to work closely with K9s for Camo, especially by way of doing evaluations and train the trainer sessions. This has been a year full of changes for us, but it has been encouraging to see the continued trust of the community after so many years.

BECKY HILLYARD

From Side Hustle to Style Empire

The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”

She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s , she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?

A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Becky in Splendid x @CellaJaneBlog Spring 2026 Collection

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?

A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.

Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?

A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.

Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?

A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?

A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.

This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle podcast.

DIY DAY

INSPIRATION FOR A MOTHER/ DAUGHTER DIY DAY

WITH MOM

An afternoon spent together is priceless with today’s busy schedules. Instead of going out, staying in can provide quaint, quiet one-on-one time for a mother and daughter (or multiple daughters). Finding time on calendars is the hard part, and filling that time is all fun from there. Here are a few favorite ideas for inspiration that may spark excitement for planning those special times together.

01 Charm Necklaces

Custom DIY charm necklaces and bracelets are trending. Gather a theme idea: birthstones, family initials, travels or even favorite hobbies, and procure charms from your local craft store or online shop. Selecting charms for each other also could be a fun way to bring delight to the crafting occasion. Necklaces and bracelets can be made for each other, or as future gifts for upcoming occasions such as a family wedding, a birthday milestone or an anniversary.

03 Meal Prep

Text conversations around kitchen tips or ingredient procurement seem endless. Spend some time together in the kitchen preparing favorite family recipes, sharing Mom’s best tips and tricks. Choosing freezer-friendly meals is a great way to walk away with meals for upcoming busy days. There’s nothing like Mom’s recipes!

Storytelling makes for the best memories. Structure memory recall by filming or journaling interview-style question-and-answer sessions, cataloging information for future generations. Videos and notes with detailed family adventures are priceless, and we all always wish we had more of them.
