Stepping into a Year Full of Endless Possibilities
January 2026 PUBLISHER

Brian Walker | brian.walker@citylifestyle.com
The start of a new year is filled with excitement and a fresh sense of possibility. To me, January is the bright, white covering of snow that ushers in a clean slate full of potential. It’s the smell of cool, crisp air that awakens my soul from its warm winter slumber. It’s a time to set new goals and dream about the year ahead. For many, though, January can also bring a sense of pressure—a reminder of resolutions left unfulfilled or the weight of expectations. This issue of Springfield City Lifestyle was crafted with the goal of offering something different: inspiration for long-term, sustainable improvements in physical, emotional, and mental health. From innovative approaches to holistic wellness and ideas for maximizing results in physical therapy sessions to finding quiet moments of rest, lost in the pages of a homegrown story, we hope this issue fills you with what January is all about—a hopeful and fresh perspective on the year ahead. Remember, life isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency. Whether it’s in business, health, or relationships, it’s not what you do occasionally that makes the difference—it’s about intentionally building habits that become part of your lifestyle. This year, focus on small, consistent actions that lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Join a fitness class, carve out moments for rest, and don’t forget to savor life’s simple pleasures. It’s the “most of the time” choices that shape our lives. One of the best ways to maintain consistency is to journal. I love journaling because it allows me to look back on where I started and realize how far I’ve come. It’s easy to get lost in the day-to-day, but keeping track of your progress and celebrating the “little wins” helps keep inspiration and momentum alive. Here’s to a healthy, happy new year—we’re rooting for you!

MAXIMIZING SUCCESS IN PHYSICAL THERAPY Terra Gegg opened Enhance Physical Therapy in 2021 with the goal of helping every client live the lifestyle they want to live without limitations. Her passion for long-term wellness compels her to empower clients with confidence and motivation to achieve their goals. Terra shares keys to maximizing success during sessions. To get started, call 417-812-5729 WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM PHYSICAL THERAPY? Physical therapy is generally thought of as rehab, a post-surgical intervention, or for someone who has had an injury. But anyone experiencing any kind of impaired movement can benefit – incontinence with jumping or running, difficulty getting up and down off the floor, or quick heart rate spikes with movement or exercise. And for those with no limitations in their movement, regularly engaging in exercises that maintain mobility and optimize strength allow you to avoid injury as you get older.

HOW CAN PATIENTS STAY MOTIVATED BETWEEN PT SESSIONS? When we stop seeing big jumps in improvement, it’s harder to stay motivated. So, keep your goals in mind and remember that even the small things are important and beneficial. It’s also important to look beyond day-to-day progress, regularly reflecting on how far you’ve come in recent weeks or months. Another way to stay motivated is to combine things you love doing with your at-home exercises. Finding an activity you enjoy and doing it with family or friends makes the work you put in at home something you’ll look forward to. WHAT ARE SOME COMMON MISTAKES CLIENTS MAKE THAT CAN LIMIT THEIR RESULTS? Physical therapy isn’t just about the “physical.” In our sessions, we talk about drinking the right amount of water, getting enough quality sleep each night, and looking at our day-to-day nutrition to make sure those needs are getting met. If these things, our basic functions, are out of whack, our body can’t fully heal. We also talk about movement throughout the day. Physical therapy once a week doesn’t do anything if you aren’t active the rest of the week. It isn’t a 30-minute part of our day either, we need to be moving throughout the day. HOW CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY AID IN OVERALL WELLNESS? In the long run, when we maintain our mobility and strength, we maintain our ability to be independent. This means we can live our lives the way we want to and engage in activities we enjoy, even as we age. Preventative work through physical therapy allows us to live life without physical limitations or fear of getting hurt. It may not seem like what we do in our 30s has much of an effect on what we will be able to do in our 80s, but it matters.

On a quiet, frosty morning in Springfield, sunlight spills warmth into offices of the Plaza Towers, one of which is home to the functional medicine practice of Dr. Gabriel Ariciu, DC. The atmosphere is calm and inviting, a stark contrast to the sterile and chilled environment of traditional medical offices. Within this space, the chiropractic physician uses restorative practices that offer his clients paths to health that don’t begin with a prescription pad, they begin with observation and conversation.
“We’re not here to fix the body. We are here to support what the body already knows how to do.”

“I tell people we’re not here to fix the body,” he says in a gentle but confident tone. “We’re here to support what the body already knows how to do.” For Ariciu, this methodology is deeply personal. Raised in the small town of Ava, Missouri, where he graduated high school before moving to Springfield, he had plans for a career far different than the one he has today. “I planned on studying theology, but after suffering for years with debilitating migraines and watching my mom suffer with diabetes, I felt led to pursue medicine.”
16
M UST SE E | HEALTH + W ELLN E SS
Ariciu originally applied to nursing school and later chiropractic school, eager to find solutions for his migraines. However, he found that traditional adjustments made his headaches worse, and he had been unable to find a permanent solution beyond temporary symptom relief to the persisting pains in his head. “I had a friend in one of my classes that told me about applied kinesiology and said I should check it out,” he says. “In learning all I could about it, I figured out I had a gluten intolerance that was causing my migraines.
By the grace of God I solved my own health issues,” he states. Ariciu was elated and felt confident that he had found the career he would build a life on. Applied kinesiology views the body as an integrated network of systems that influence each other. It integrates neurological, structural and biochemical pathways to uncover what’s going on with the body, Ariciu explains. “Every muscle in your body communicates with the nervous system,” he says.
“Many times, it starts with something seemingly small or insignificant, like food, and that small change has a profound impact on the patient’s health.”
“Through gentle muscle testing, we can tell which muscles are weak and that signals to us what isn’t right.” These signals can even detect underlying imbalances, such as hormonal or nutritional deficiencies, gut issues, and emotional burdens. In 2017, he opened his practice and has helped the Springfield community with whole-body approaches to health and wellness ever since. “I’ve seen patients with complex issues from Hashimoto’s to Crohn’s experience meaningful improvements,” he says. “Many times, it starts with something seemingly small or insignificant, like food, and that small change has a profound impact on the patient’s health.” He recalls one such patient who had been battling Chron’s disease. When she walked through his office doors, she weighed just 80 pounds. “We discovered that most of her symptoms were being triggered by soy. Once she eliminated it, she began gaining the weight back and smiling again. Watching that transformation was extraordinary.”
Appointments are intentionally unhurried, allowing Ariciu time for thorough evaluation and discussion with each patient. Taking time to deliberately investigate the root cause of symptoms allows most patients to see improvement by the fifth visit. In both his professional practice and in his personal life, faith and family are what ground him. He and his wife, Nancyann, are enjoying every minute of parenthood to their two young children. Their time as a family is filled with life’s simple pleasures– playing together outdoors or listening to their daughter play the piano. And when time allows, the family enjoys traveling. Ariciu says that he is grateful he is able to offer relief to those seeking a more natural and holistic approach to wellness, one that honors the multi-faceted nature of the human body. The path to true wellness takes time, but supporting the body with patience and the tools it needs to do its job is what Ariciu’s approach to functional medicine is all about. “The body was designed to heal itself,” he says. “We just have to get out of its way.”

AGE WITHOUT LIMITS
SECRETS TO HEALTHY AGING FROM PERSONAL TRAINER MOLLIE ESTES ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEIGH LOVE

S ELF CA R E | FI TNES S
When asked how to stay healthy as you age, personal trainer Mollie Estes is blunt: “Let’s stop blaming age for what inactivity caused,” she says. “Stillness ages you, motion heals you.” It’s a simple but radical mindset shift. Yes – aging is inevitable, but certain factors become ever more important as the decades pass: Flexibility. Balance. Muscle and bone building. Hydration. “We think that losing your balance happens because you’re old,” says Estes, the owner of boutique gym F8 Training & Wellness Studio in Springfield. “The truth is you lose your balance because you stopped moving and challenging your body to balance.” Her philosophy comes alive through her clients. Take Ellen Magers, 75, who was always physically active—she is a former aerobics instructor—but found her knee was slowing her down. After three arthroscopic surgeries on her knee over the past several decades, Magers decided to strengthen her bones and muscles to stave off knee replacement surgery. “When you’re younger, you don’t pay as much attention to doing things correctly and don’t take care of your body like you should,” she says. Magers joined the Gentle Stretch class at F8 two years ago and quickly saw improvements in her movement and balance. She added the Barre class, CONTINUED >

with Estes advising her on modifications to protect her knee, and Women & Weights for strength training. “I faithfully do two classes of each a week,” she says, adding that every morning and throughout the day she does the stretches and exercises she learned. “The damage has been done, but I feel my muscles that allow me to squat and stand up are definitely stronger,” she says. “I wear a compression knee sleeve to stabilize my knee, but I’m still able to go on walks and play with my grandkids on the floor.” Estes recommends simple, daily routines that can help you stay fit as you age. Strengthbuilding activities— with weights or resistance bands—can help work both your fast twitch muscle fiber (used when you brush your teeth) and slow twitch muscle fiber (when you stand for long periods) and build bone, she says. “Motion is the lotion. By moving your body even with gentle calisthenics, you wake the joints up and activate your core, boosting balance. Planks are a power core exercise to work your deep abdominal muscles. If you are on the floor, rest on your forearms and on your knees or toes,” Estes says. “I also like ‘dying bugs’ over ab crunches: Lie on your back with your head on the ground. Raise your arms and legs in the
air like a dead bug. Extend your opposite arm and leg out as you inhale and exhale, then bring them back to the start.” Research suggests that moving for three minutes every half hour can offset the harmful effects of continuous sitting. “Get up for three minutes and take a brisk walk, do a few squats, light jumping jacks or march in place,” she says. “It does not matter what you do. Just get your heart rate up. In a normal eight hour day, you’ll get about an hour of exercise.” She also emphasizes the importance of breathing and hydration. “You want to breathe diaphragmatically, taking big, deep breaths to oxygenate your body,” she says. “Also, drink 16 ounces of water when you wake up.” As for balance – it is all about muscle memory. Estes recommends standing on one leg for at least 10 seconds and then incrementally increase the time. Want a challenge? Try closing your eyes. “You need to have 360 awareness of your body. Walk backwards down a hallway or walk sidestep,” Estes says. “That way, if you get off balance, your foot will know to step to the side or step backwards.” Learn more at F8Training.com.

T HE S C E N T OF W E L L-B E ING Q&A WITH AROMA THERAPIST CATHERINE ROBINSON OF WILDWOOD AROMAS
Aromatherapy has found its way into the homes and wellness routines of many, but few understand the keys to success in its use and how to make it something that is both safe and effective. Catherine Robinson, certified aromatherapist and founder of Wildwood Aromas, discusses the benefits of aromatherapy, how to shop for quality essential oils, and her go-to scents for every home.

EXP E RT H E LP | LO CAL SE RVICE S
HOW WERE YOU FIRST INTRODUCED TO AROMATHERAPY?
Honestly, it started with my older sister - she began using essential oils long before I did and told me to get into them, so I decided to give them a try.
When I started using them, I began noticing that my family was feeling better overall. Because my husband had developed some medical concerns, I wanted to support him in as many ways as possible. I started researching aromatherapy and essential oils but found they were quite confusing, and the internet often offered contradicting information. That’s when I decided to go back to school to get real training in aromatherapy. I completed 100 hours of training, did five case studies, and passed a final exam to become certified through The School for Aromatic Studies.
WHAT BENEFITS HAVE YOU SEEN FROM AROMATHERAPY?
I genuinely love how essential oils make me feel – and how they help the people around me. They’re such an accessible way to feel better. Plus, they smell wonderful and who doesn’t love that? In my own personal use, I’ve seen my family’s wellness improve, meaning fewer sick days for all of us. Additionally, aromatherapy supports the overall physical and emotional well-being of individuals, aiding in things such as balancing moods and helping people feel better in general.
WITH SO MANY PRODUCTS AVAILABLE, WHAT SHOULD SOMEONE LOOK FOR WHEN SHOPPING FOR ESSENTIAL OILS?
First, remember that natural doesn’t automatically mean beneficial or safe. Some oils can interact with prescriptions or irritate the skin, especially if they aren’t used correctly. Secondly, quality matters. Lower-quality oils don’t offer the same benefits as high quality oils, and some brands even use synthetics or additives to boost
production. These things can trigger allergic reactions or make you feel generally unwell when used. There’s no official grading system or governing body for essential oils, so you want to purchase oils that are pure and properly distilled. And quality doesn’t mean the most expensive – there’s a comfortable middle ground.
IF SOMEONE WANTS TO START USING ESSENTIAL OILS AT HOME, WHERE SHOULD THEY BEGIN?
Lavendar. It’s the Swiss Army knife of essential oils. If you only ever buy one oil, make it lavender. It’s safe for children and pets, it has a wide range of uses, and it mixes with almost everything. For mood support, citrus oils are wonderful. Other oils I’d recommend investing in are frankincense, tea tree, and eucalyptus radiata, which is the gentlest form of eucalyptus. At home, you can diffuse or dilute and apply essential oils – and a little goes a long way, with most people seeing benefits when using as little as 5-10 drops in a recipe. Strength = Independence Think Movements over Muscle to keep Strong! Why Strength Training Matters Preserving your muscle mass and strength is crucial if you want to enjoy an active life past 40. It’s what allows you to go play with the kids, travel with your spouse, and join the family hike without hesitating. Unfortunately muscle mass starts to plummet after age 30. You can lose 4-6lbs of muscle tissue every decade if you aren’t adding proper strength training into your exercise routine. With over 600 muscles in the human body, it would be impossible to come up with an exercise routine that worked each of them individually.
So instead of thinking “what muscles should I be working?” think more along the lines of “what movements should I be working”? To maintain strength throughout your whole body, you should be addressing these 5 movements in every workout: Squatting Hinging (bending at the hips) Upper Body Pushing Upper Body Pulling Core Stability Make sure and do these 5 movements with every workout and you’ll be well on your way to keeping your muscle mass, maintaining your freedom, and being the happiest, healthiest, most active version of yourself.

U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED
The New Frontier of Health AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT
Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.
1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”
Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.
2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”
Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows. CONTINUED >

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”
Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.
4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”
Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.
5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”
Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.
6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”
Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1, DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.

7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”
Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly. For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.
A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT
“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive self-criticism to continuously raise the standard of care.”

Creating a Better Snowman A Few Tips to Get You Rolling
There’s probably no more quintessential symbol of winter than a snowman. We’ve all seen Frosty and are probably pretty familiar with Olaf. But if you want to install one into your own yard, you’ll have to put a little elbow grease into creating one without the help of world-class animators. Here are some tips to help give your yard a well-dressed frozen sentry sure to turn your neighbors’ heads.
well-packed snowball and get rolling, but don’t just go in one direction. Roll the ball to start accumulating snow, then roll back, then roll in a different direction. Pack and begin to shape your snowball as you go. Reinforce as necessary. Look to use a 3-2-1 ratio for the sections.
Tip 3:
EVEN SNOWMEN CRAVE STABILITY.
Tip 1:
NOT ALL SNOW IS SNOWMAN SNOW. It takes more than a flurry to build a snowman. Heavy, slushy snow won’t work, and if it’s too powdery dry it won’t pack together. If you can pack a good snowball, you can build a snowman. Bonus tip: Dry snow can be modified to workable snowman snow with a quick spritz of water from a spray bottle, or a light mist from that garden hose you really should have already put away for the winter.
Tip 2:
ROLL TOWARDS YOUR GOAL — THE LONG WAY. Decide where to position your snowman and make that your finish line. Start with a
Once you get your base section in place, shore up the bottom with snow. Then at the top, create a bowl-shaped indentation to allow the next section to sit securely. Ensure each section is well-packed with added snow around the “joint” between the sections.
Tip 4:
SNOW IS HEAVY. ENLIST A BUDDY. A willing helper can help lift that heavy next stage into place. You can even roll it onto a tarp and lift from either side to get it up there. A third set of hands can help move it into place. Otherwise, use plywood as a ramp to roll it up yourself (braced well against the bottom with plenty of support underneath, so as to not damage the base). You might need an extra bowl of Wheaties to roll it up there alone.
Tip 5:
PILOT HOLES ARE YOUR FRIEND. Simply jamming details into your snowman can mess with its integrity. Use a sharp stick to gently create some pilot holes for your features before you set them into place.
Tip 6:
GIVE HIM SOME PERSONALITY. There’s always that classic snowman uniform of a scarf, hat, a carrot nose and coal (sure, we all have that lying around these days — river rocks might be easier to get your hands on). Or you could be a bit more creative, maybe with an old oversized Hawaiian shirt, a jazzy vest, or go all-out and channel your inner Martha Stewart, breaking out your Dremel to make something custom for your wintery lawn guest. You might need to use your imagination — not many of us have corncob pipes or top hats anymore, either. Pro tip: if you’re dressing your snowman, put any body clothing you might use on before adding the arms. Just remember. If you mess it up, it’s ok because he’ll be back again some day.
