Welcoming the Holiday Season— and a New Chapter

As Springfield City Lifestyle ’s new Editorial Coordinator, I feel truly blessed to be part of such an incredible team. It’s an honor to connect with the people who make Springfield such a vibrant community and a wonderful place to call home.

This is my favorite time of year—the holiday season brings with it the sights, sounds, and traditions that make this time so magical. For many of us, the holidays are a chance to rediscover the joy we felt as children, whether through the twinkle of festive lights, the aroma of fresh-baked treats, or cherished family traditions.

In my family, one of our favorite traditions is taking a quirky photo in matching pajamas. The experience brings endless laughter and creates a memory that warms our hearts each time we see it. These are the moments that remind me of the true spirit of the season—the joy found in togetherness and the memories made with loved ones.

This month, we’ve curated a holiday gift guide to help make your shopping easier while supporting local businesses. You’ll also find highlights of festive events that showcase the very best of Springfield during the holidays—from community celebrations and performances to opportunities for giving back.

While this season overflows with joy for many, it can also be a challenging time for those who are grieving, lonely, or in need. In the spirit of the holidays, let’s come together as a community to extend kindness, generosity, and compassion to those around us. Whether it’s donating to a local charity, volunteering your time, or simply checking in on a neighbor, every act of goodwill makes a lasting impact.

May your holidays be filled with love, peace, and the joy of giving.

Happy Holidays,

December 2025

GIVING THE GIFT OF GENEROSITY

Springfield-based charity Convoy of Hope invites the community to partner together with unique gift giving ideas during the holidays.

December ushers in a season of giving each year, and Convoy of Hope—a Springfield-based nonprofit—reminds us of the power generosity has to change the world. Ranked among Forbes’ 2024 List of America’s Top Charities, where it has climbed in rank more than 50 spots since 2019, the humanitarian organization continues making an extraordinary global impact by feeding hundreds of thousands of children each day while revitalizing communities toward long-term sustainability.

“We’re excited to be on the Forbes list, ranked 27th among more than 1.5 million charities,” says Ethan Forhetz, national spokesperson and VP of public engagement for Convoy of Hope. “It’s humbling that right here in Springfield we have become a nationally ranked charity.

The people of the Ozarks have rallied behind Convoy from the beginning, and through their support they have put us in a position to obtain this national recognition.”

For those seeking a meaningful gift this holiday season, Convoy’s online Gift Catalog, accessible through their website, offers an alternative to traditional packages wrapped in paper and bows – it is the gift of hope.

“It’s a gift for the person who has everything,” Forhetz says. “Sometimes we want to step back from materialism and help someone instead of buying more stuff and this is a great way.”

Shoppers can select from individual items or bundles to purchase, each representing one of Convoy’s global projects or initiatives. Individual gift options range from medication and vitamins for children to sewing machines or educational materials for women and girls, while bundles include helping a mom or supporting a family in Africa. Purchases can be made in another person’s name, making it one of the holiday’s most remarkable gifts.

Donations made on behalf of someone else are quick, simple, yet profoundly meaningful gifts that do not require a trip into overcrowded stores but still have an added personal touch. After receiving the donation, Convoy sends a personalized card to the honoree, letting them know that a gift was given in their name. And while supplies last, every person who donates will be sent a free 2026 Convoy of Hope calendar.

“When people give to Convoy, their gifts multiply—the person who’s helped then helps the next, from generation to generation.”

Other ways to give towards the work of Convoy this season include participating in local volunteer efforts at Convoy of Hope’s Springfield headquarters, or by supporting the charity’s initiatives through regular giving towards feeding children, training local farmers, or empowering women towards self-sufficiency.

Because every generous act—no matter how small—brings us one step closer to a world without hunger.

FLIGHT FOR THE BRAVE

“I got to see what was going on in the cities on a daily basis. I was always respectful to the Vietnamese people. I probably bonded with as many Vietnamese people as I did with the military people, because I split my time close to 50/50,” he says. “But a lot of tragedy took place—things that you never want to see—and that was hard.”

Decades after Vietnam, the Honor Flight of the Ozarks helps veteran Ed Kinworthy reflect on what it means to serve.

In 1966, Ed Kinworthy was a high school graduate working at McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis when the Vietnam War draft began. He was faced with a choice: He could enlist and serve in the Navy, Air Force or Marines for four years—reducing his odds of seeing combat—or he could await the call, serve in the Army, and be discharged in two years. “I expected to be drafted at some point in time,” he says.

Kinworthy was drafted in 1968 and reported for basic training at Fort Leonard Wood. Meeting men from across the country was eye-opening. “It was an awakening to different cultures and different ways people were raised,” he says.

After basic training, he was assigned to the military police and sent to Nha Trang on the coast. “I wound up with an excellent tour of duty in many respects,” he says. “My job was primarily to protect the generals and other commanders who came into the area for strategy sessions and guard the compound area, which was a pretty safe duty.”

He patrolled the highway and city, which allowed him to get to know the locals personally.

He earned a Bronze Star for his service and was discharged in 1969. “When I left Vietnam, I felt some remorse because I was leaving friends with the job unfinished,” he says. “Sometimes, the military can wind up being your family, but I was fortunate enough to have a good, solid family to return home to in Poplar Bluff.”

Kinworthy went on to earn a degree in psychology and worked with youth at a correction center and later with veterans struggling with PTSD and substance use. “I teach people how to eliminate depression and anxiety,” he says. “Now that I’m retired, I’m working on a program to help others eliminate depression to live a life they don’t need a vacation from.”

When he learned about the Honor Flight of the Ozarks—part of the national Honor Flight Network, which honors America’s veterans by flying them to see their memorials in Washington, D.C.—he thoughtfully considered the opportunity. “Some friends had gone on it,” he says. “Many veterans have emotional wounds that never healed and were bitter about being treated disrespectfully when they returned home. However, rejecting appreciation keeps you in a bad place. Everyone must process pain to be healthy. Going on this flight can give veterans a better perspective.”

“My father has always been humble about his service,” says his daughter, Jill Phillips, owner of Jill

Jill Phillips with her dad, Ed Kinworthy

Phillips Coaching. “This flight has been an opportunity to talk with him about his experience.”

“The flight made me realize that sacrifice has to be ongoing so we can continue to have the freedoms that are afforded to our country. I served my country—and I’m glad that I did,” Kinworthy says. “It’s the best country in the world, and it demands sacrifice.”

Their service paid the price. Each Honor Flight is a heartfelt thank-you to those who’ve already given so much. Veterans travel at no cost, thanks to community support. One of the greatest ways you can help is by spreading the word to local heroes who haven’t yet taken this journey. To learn more, apply, volunteer, or donate, visit www.honorflightoftheozarks.org

Honor Flight of the Ozarks provides veterans with an opportunity to visit their memorials in Washington, D.C. Part of the Honor Flight Network, the non-profit exists purely to honor the sacrifice made by the men and women who have served the United States, and has been in existence since 2013.

from kitchen to community

At

Homemade. Delivered. Ashley Shreffler serves healthy meals — with a generous helping of kindness.

When Denise LeBolt launched her premade meal company Homemade. Delivered., word spread quickly. The overwhelming response from the community ushered in the need for her to expand into a commercial kitchen to keep up with the demand. That’s when her friend, Ashley Shreffler, a restaurant veteran, offered to pitch in and help.

That decision, 12 years ago, altered the course of Shreffler’s career. “I immediately fell in love with the concept,” she says.

Two years ago, Shreffler purchased the Springfield-based service that delivers healthy, nutritious and delicious meals, juices and smoothies and it’s clear that she’s just getting started.

In doing so, she is creating a special, heartwarming and personal mealtime experience for families across the Springfield area.

“Our clientele include busy families who want to eat healthily but are too busy to cook, don’t like to cook or just don’t know how to cook. We save them time, energy and money while simplifying their lives,” Shreffler says. “We have a deep commitment to those facing health challenges. We donate extra juices, meals and bone broths to clients undergoing cancer treatment. One elderly client was going

to move into a nursing home because she couldn’t cook for herself anymore. And I said, ‘Let me cook for her.’ We’ve kept her out of a nursing home.”

Today, Shreffler says Homemade. Delivered. is providing homemade meals to than 2,100 households and adds between five and 10 new homes a week.

Here’s how it works: Menus — which include entrées, sides, bone broth, juices and smoothies — vary weekly and are posted on Sunday. Clients place their orders by noon on Friday for delivery the following Wednesday. There is no cost to subscribe and no commitment; clients can order as often — or as infrequently — as they desire. The meals are pre-cooked or partially cooked for easy preparation and can keep through the following Tuesday. They can also be frozen for later use.

Drivers deliver Ashley’s freshly-prepared meals make their way across the Ozarks, delivered with care and the friendly smile of a familiar friend.

Meals are made from scratch, using ingredients with no preservatives or hormones. Whenever possible, Shreffler incorporates natural and local ingredients, partnering with other local businesses. She has three raised garden beds where she grows herbs, works with NuVenture Farms for pasture-raised pork and bones, and purchases eggs from Thunder Chicken Farms and meat from Blue Silo Beefs.

Shreffler meets the dietary needs of all her customers, serving food that is gluten-free, dairy-free, Paleo, Keto and vegetarian. “I love to cook. I love feeding people. Working here broadened my horizons,” says Shreffler, who started working in restaurants at 16 and moved to Springfield from Oklahoma 22 years ago to be closer to her grandparents.

Community is everything to Ashley, and that value shines through every carefully prepared dish. She also takes every opportunity she can to give back.

“Our hardworking staff is like family. Each week, we donate meals to our team and share extra food with local organizations that support those in need, such as The Rare Breed and Harmony House, and have helped with teacher appreciation meals at The Discovery Center,” she says. “We are excited about our new partnership with Ozarks Food Harvest, which helps provide weekend backpack meals for hungry children. Whether big or small, each act of giving is our way of saying thank you to the community that continues to support us. Together, we are ensuring that good food and a little kindness always reach those in need.”
