Investing in the people and stories shaping the future of Springfield

Every community is shaped by the people who choose to invest in it. Sometimes that investment looks like opening a business, supporting a nonprofit, mentoring a young leader, or simply showing up for neighbors and causes that matter. Over time, those contributions begin to shape the character of a place. One of the things I’ve come to appreciate most in this role is how powerful stories can be in helping us see our commu nity more clearly.

Each month, Springfield City Lifestyle introduces readers to people, businesses, and organizations doing meaningful work across our city. Many of those stories might otherwise go unnoticed in the rhythm of everyday life. But when those stories are shared, something interesting happens. People discover a new place, learn about a cause they didn’t know existed, or begin to see their community and the people in it, a little differently.

Communities are shaped by the stories that travel through them.

It’s a privilege to help share those stories each month and to work alongside local businesses and organizations who believe in investing in the community we all call home.

If a story in the magazine has ever helped you discover someone or something meaningful in Springfield, I’d love to hear about it.

skin in the game

Why Skincare Is A Long Game Worth Playing

Today’s world is built on the expectation of instant results. So when it comes to skincare, investing time and money into healthy, glowing skin can feel counterintuitive. There is no overnight transformation, no one-time fix for a big reveal – and yet, for April Wilkie, esthetician and owner of Healing Hands Skin Therapy in Springfield, Missouri, that is precisely the point.

Like any meaningful investment, reaping the benefits of healthy skincare requires patience and consistency. April often draws a parallel to investing in retirement funds. “I invest in my IRA every week with the goal of

benefiting from those investments years down the road,” she says. “A single facial will always be better than none at all, but the deeper value lies in what happens beneath the surface days and weeks later, when the skin completes a full cell renewal cycle.”

That’s when compounding benefits begin to add up.

“You don’t produce a new skin cell until you shed a dead one through exfoliation. When we are young, we have a 28-day skin cell cycle, but as we age that cycle slows down. That’s where exfoliation comes in and helps retrieve our youthful glow.”

BY SHANNON BOWERS

She warns that, like many aspects of health, skincare prevention is easy to dismiss when the skin appears “fine.” But by the time visible damage surfaces, the work becomes corrective rather than protective.

Over her decades-long career, April has seen teenage clients all the way through clients in their 70s or 80s who are receiving their first facial treatment. While she is happy that her senior clients are taking the time to pamper their skin, she admits that there is also a sense of sadness that they waited to do this for themselves. Yet her message is not one of vanity, it is one that comes from the known dividends paid by being a good steward of one’s skin – health, confidence, and future well-being to name a few.

However, skincare shouldn’t feel overwhelming, April says. The key to effective skincare boils down to consistency. She dismantles the myth that the only way to healthy skin is through elaborate, time-consuming routines. Having a high-quality cleanser, SPF, and a nightly moisturizer, in and of itself can be a win that makes a noticeable difference. More advanced products like serums can accelerate results, but they are not prerequisites for healthy skin.

April’s philosophy is that skincare is about tailoring solutions to fit individual needs, not selling trends or addressing skin problems, such as acne or wrinkles, with quick-fixes that lack long term results. She often hears from clients about trendy products that turned out to be a waste of time and money. That’s why she remains committed to matching clients with products that favor clean beauty standards and ingredients that rejuvenate the skin instead of clogging pores with artificial color, fragrance, or fillers. She states that skincare isn’t onesize-fits-all – it’s about getting to the root cause of any undesirable skin issues. “For our clients, it’s like going into a boutique and having something tailored to your body,” she says.

This is where Healing Hands distinguishes itself. Influenced by her mother’s background in naturopathy, April believes that the skin is part of an interconnected system and explains that skin is the largest organ of elimination on the body. “Whatever goes into our bodies finds a way out.” Acne, for example, can be linked to internal issues such as gut health or hormonal imbalances. Through deep-dives and personalized testing and consultation, April’s clients receive care that addresses the whole person, not just their complexion.

Her primary advice is consistent home care, something she likens to physical health routines. “You can, and should, take daily vitamins at home to stay healthy, but you still need to see a doctor regularly,” she explains. This is where her professional services come in.

In-office treatments are more customized and, at times, more aggressive. They are designed to correct, refine, and guide what clients maintain at home, she says. Together, they form a system rather than a splurge.

“The key to effective skincare boils down to consistency.”

That system also includes knowing what not to invest in. April is straightforward about the damage to skin caused by prolonged exposure to the sun or the over-use of tanning beds, particularly in young people. “You don’t think about your skin when you’re young,” she says. “But the increased risk of melanoma just isn’t worth it.” Instead, she suggests alternatives that suit individual needs and skin types, such as quality self-tanners and daily SPF to offer additional protection.

As Healing Hands approaches its 30th anniversary, April is reflective of the legacy she hopes to leave. Beyond treatments and products, she wants to journey with her clients on their path to beautiful, healthy, glowing skin. Having travelled this journey herself and discovering how transformative the right products can be, April tailors solutions that factor in her clients’ lifestyle, budget, and overall well-being.

“I want to be on the journey with you to your best skin ever,” she says. And after three decades, it’s clear that, for April, skincare isn’t about chasing perfection, it’s about making informed investments that result in healthier skin over a lifetime.

A Sound Investment

ONE COMPOSER’S COMMITMENT TO HER CRAFT AND HER COMMUNITY

While most might reduce the meaning of the word “investing” to numbers on a screen, Springfield pianist and composer Cindy Dittrich has built a life that proves some of the most rewarding returns are measured in confidence and creativity.

Cindy’s passion for music began almost before she can remember. Growing up near Chicago, music was a soft yet steady anchor in her daily life. After her sister was given a piano, Cindy became fascinated with the contrasting black and ivory keys and the tinkling tones made by the large instrument that sat in her living room. She pleaded for lessons and eventually convinced a visiting teacher to take her on as her youngest student. It never mattered that there were no musicians in her family or many peers who shared her interest—she simply loved playing.

That love seemed to deepen every day, and she found ways to drink up tones, chords, and melodies from any musical well from which she could draw. She recalls time spent as a young child listening to classical radio, which introduced her to legends such as Vladimir Horowitz and Artur Rubinstein. Their recordings began to fuel dreams of becoming a concert pianist.

By high school, she had joined band, orchestra, and later jazz band, and her competitive nature sharpened her discipline. Yet during her junior year, a full-time music career felt uncertain outside of teaching.

Yielding to the perceived practical reality, Cindy invested her time toward a degree in biomedical engineering, built a career, and started a family. However, music never disappeared from her life. She taught private lessons, submitted original songs to Nashville producers, and continued to refine her craft. After a move to New Jersey stalled her engineering work, Cindy’s focus returned to music and long practice hours resumed. Eventually, family ties—and a desire to

avoid frigid winters—led her to Springfield, where her music took center stage.

In Springfield, Cindy went “all in” on her music. She started by building a private piano studio, accompanying choirs, playing church piano, and performing with community jazz and professional big bands. When her daughter began violin lessons, Cindy discovered the Suzuki method for piano. Four years of intensive training followed, expanding her philosophy of teaching and deepening her belief in early music education.

Yet her own music still lingered inside her without a clear way out—until self-publishing changed the equation. Over the past several years, Cindy has invested thousands of hours studying composition with a renowned editor, learning to write pieces that are accessible and student-centered, and building a brand of inspiring music. As her portfolio grows, she is learning to appreciate and embrace the reality that excellence comes through consistent effort and that music is an investment in the parts of the soul that shape who we become and how we learn to belong.

Today, Cindy’s compositions are performed across the region and are regularly featured in recitals, festivals, and concerts. Each performance, she says, feels surreal.

Cindy believes that music is always worth investing in. Teaching molds the next generation, composition gives voice to ideas waiting to emerge, and performance connects people from all walks of life, uniting them in a shared experience. In Springfield’s vibrant music community, the dividends of Cindy’s sacrifice are evident well beyond the studio—they are enriching lives and reminding many that some of the best investments are ones that continue to resonate long after the last note fades.

Bold Color, Unbound Freedom

Coloring the community with his creative spirit, Jorge Ortiz has found home and inspiration in Springfield

For local artist Jorge Ortiz, art has never been about rules or a single, defined path. Instead, it has been about intuition, emotion, and the quiet but strong pull toward creativity that has followed him from a small town in Mexico to Springfield, his home of over 20 years.

Ortiz grew up in Mexico where his family had strong roots in the restaurant business. Art was not something found prominently in his family tree, but it became something that he knew would be part of his life, even from childhood.

His early interests leaned towards architecture, as he was interested in design and fascinated by the way structures and spaces fit together like puzzle pieces to make up the landscape of a city. Teachers began to recognize his potential, often encouraging him to compete academically against students from other schools. However, due to the distance of the nearest secondary school, Ortiz stepped away from formal education. What remained was his constant observation of the world’s natural beauty and his need to create.

Painting eventually became his favorite outlet, and it slowly turned into a passion that would not only drive his career, but his life as well.

In 2003, Ortiz moved to the United States to join his family working in the restaurant business. Yet he would spend his days off painting the inspiration he found all around him in his new community. As his art began to take on a life of its own, Ortiz decided to pursue life as a professional artist.

“I love painting,” he says, but that love is also layered with influence and philosophy.

“Art isn’t the destination, it is found in the discovery, and it thrives when it is given room to grow and explore life on its own.”

Growing up, Ortiz admired television painter Bob Ross, citing his calm demeanor and forgiving approach to art that left a lasting impression on his development as an artist. “He showed me that you don’t need to follow rules,” Ortiz says. “If you make a mistake, you can fix it. A mistake can easily become a ‘happy tree.’” This sense of freedom still defines his work today.

Another influence on Ortiz’s art is Frida Kahlo. The passion and emotional intensity found in her paintings is something Ortiz speaks about with reverence. He draws on Kahlo’s appreciation for bold expression and powerful colors – qualities that show up often in his own work.

In fact, bright colors are the hallmark of Ortiz’s paintings, although he refuses to confine himself to a set style. Freestyle painting is his favorite approach, allowing him to follow his mood rather than a prescribed model.

When sitting before a blank canvas, Ortiz says he starts his creative process with an idea but allows the painting to evolve on its own. As a result, no two works feel the same, yet each carries a distinct flavor, energy, and appreciation for life.

This energy extends beyond the canvas. Ortiz is passionate about giving life to walls, spaces, and environments, believing that the world should be full of art that contributes “good vibes”. In recent months, Ortiz has been asked to travel to Georgia to paint a mural, found homes for his paintings across

the country, and has worked with art collectors from around the world.

Yet despite his art’s far reach, Springfield remains home for Ortiz. His love for Springfield stems from the large family network he has close by, the small, safe community feel that the area offers, and the inspiration found in local nature. “I’ve visited other cities, but nothing has ever felt like home other than Springfield,” he remarks.

Although painting remains primary for Ortiz, his creativity is also pushing beyond traditional art forms. He has recently started collecting objects that he finds in nature and is experimenting with transforming them into new art pieces. Ortiz is clear: art is not limited by a medium or a category. Everything that anyone can do or make is art.

This belief shapes the advice he gives to aspiring artists and creatives – to follow their dreams without fear of failure or limitation. Try something new, he says. If it doesn’t work out, try something else. Art isn’t the destination, it is found in the discovery, and it thrives when it is given room to grow and explore life on its own.

With every brushstroke, Jorge Ortiz reflects a life of beauty and freedom. His art does not demand interpretation but instead invites its admirers to feel whatever they need to feel in that moment. And in Springfield, his art is adding color and unmistakably good energy across the community.

Redefining MVP: TIM TEBOW’S LIFE BEYOND FOOTBALL

An exclusive Q&A with City Lifestyle

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

From championship trophies to global humanitarian impact, Tim Tebow’s journey has defied every standard playbook. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Tebow pulls back the curtain on the moments that truly defined him, from a humbling middle school church retreat to the life-altering shift of fatherhood. This isn’t just a look back at a career; it’s an invitation into the heart of a man driven by purpose. Read the highlights below, then join us for the full, unfiltered experience by scanning the QR code at the end.

Q: WE ALL KNOW YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD, BUT TELL US ABOUT THE CURL CONTEST.

A: I was competing for my future high school team (my brother’s team), and I pushed myself way past what was smart. I ended up collapsing and needing medical attention. But what stayed with me wasn’t the pain, it was the lesson. Would I be willing to do something that others aren’t? For much of my life, I strived to bring my best for a game, but I hope that I can say at the end of my life I was willing to do that for things that actually matter.

Q: YOU’VE ACHIEVED SO MUCH IN SPORTS. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT NOW?

A: Becoming a dad. Nothing compares. From the moment I knew my wife was pregnant, I felt a new depth of love for our child, but when you bring your baby home, the responsibility hits you like nothing else. Suddenly, everything you see, every decision you make, you’re asking, “Is this corner too sharp? What happens if she reaches that drawer?” It changes how you see the world and how you see other people.

Q: YOU’VE SPOKEN OPENLY ABOUT DISAPPOINTMENT, ESPECIALLY AROUND FOOTBALL. HOW DID THAT SEASON OF LIFE SHAPE YOU?

A: I talked a lot about that very thing in my book Shaken . We all go through moments where our faith in our abilities and purpose feels rattled, but I believe it’s often in those storms when God can show us who we could become.

Q: YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT COMPARISON CULTURE. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE COMPARISON HAS BECOME SUCH A TRAP TODAY?

A: Because we’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel. Social media shows people’s “best day,” often filtered and staged, and then we measure our reality against that. There’s a reason filters are so popular—it’s not real. We end up scrolling through images that don’t tell the full story, and without realizing it, comparison starts to steal our joy and our gratitude.

“We’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel... comparison starts to steal our joy.”

Q: YOUR FOUNDATION FOCUSES ON THE “MOST VULNERABLE.” WHERE DID THAT CALLING BEGIN?

A: When I was 15, I met a boy in the Philippines who was treated as a throwaway because he was born with physical differences. That moment changed me. I realized God was calling me to pursue a different kind of MVP, not “Most Valuable Player,” but “Most Vulnerable People.”

Q: FINALLY, WHAT’S ONE THING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

A: I have some weird coffee habits, which include protein powder, collagen, and cream all mixed together. I love golf dates with my wife. And every night, I bring snacks to bed to share with our dogs. It brings me more joy than it probably should.

This conversation barely scratches the surface. Tim goes deeper into the moments that rattled him, the joys of fatherhood, and one story he has never shared publicly until now. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on Share the Lifestyle Podcast.

Welcoming Spring in the Ozarks

As spring awakens across the Ozarks, consider these great ways to welcome its arrival

When spring arrives in the Ozarks, it arrives quietly. It delicately tiptoes in by way of warmer afternoons, budding flowers in the fields, and fresh breezes that smell of sunshine. Then, almost overnight, the Ozarks are bursting with new colors, signaling its arrival. In Springfield and beyond, there are many ways to welcome the season for those who wish to offer greeting.

Starting where spring always feels intentional, the Springfield Botanical Gardens provide the perfect afternoon setting for reading, as sunlight stretches gently forward, warming cheeks and noses with a soft, golden touch. By early April, the Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden begins to bloom and offers a meditative walk among awakening trees that beautifully frame the scenic views. Around the same time, the Cherry Blossom Kite & Piñata Festival fills the gardens with spirited tunes and cultural performances as stunning as the season itself.

For a more adventurous take on the arrival of spring, head to Silver Dollar City

in Branson, where you can beat the summer crowds, ride roller coasters that thrill, and taste dishes bursting with homecooked flavor.

Closer to home, the Greater Springfield Farmers’ Market presents spring’s fresh flavors: morel mushrooms, early greens, and aromatic flowers that adorn tables with their bright faces. Local growers like Cassidy Flower Co. at Estes Farms or Pa’s Posey Patch offer photo ops among opening blooms.

Spring also makes space for art and escape. ArtFest on Walnut Street turns downtown Springfield into a creative corridor of artistry, unique dishes, and live music. For an overnight getaway, sleep peacefully under the stars at Ozark Mountain Adventure, where glamping tents offer a secluded way to pause and reflect on all the new life that the season brings.

No matter how you choose to welcome spring this year, be sure to take time to intentionally pause and observe the Ozarks as they transform with its arrival.

There are many ways to welcome the season for those who wish to offer greeting.
