COLLABORATION OVER COMPETITION: HOW THREE WOMEN ARE CHANGING THE NARRATIVE

I have been looking forward to this issue for months. There is a profound joy in celebrating the women who shape our lives, and I feel incredibly lucky to be surrounded by such a strong, inspiring circle of my own.
I wouldn’t be who I am today without my amazing mother, Laurie, my two older sisters, Mary Kate and Megan, my grandmothers, Dottie and Barbara, and my incredible aunts—Ellen, Donna B., Donna M., Paula, and Elizabeth. And, of course, I can’t forget the girlfriends who keep me grounded (you know who you are).

Reflecting on these relationships, I often think about how Hollywood tends to create a narrative that suggests women are naturally at odds with one another. My experience has been the exact opposite. Perhaps it started during my time at an all-girls high school, where I first learned the power of a female collective, but it has certainly been solidified right here in our community.
Since I started the journey of launching this magazine, I have witnessed the way women in Springdale rally around one another in a way that should inspire everyone. We don’t just coexist; we champion each other.
In this issue, I am so excited to share the stories of Erin, Roni, and Rachel, and the beautiful way they support one another’s businesses. We also have the privilege of highlighting Sassafras Springs Vineyard and the incredible woman behind it all.
I hope these pages remind you of the amazing women in your own life. Here is to all the women out there, may we continue to lift as we climb!

HOW THREE FEMALE BUSINESS OWNERS CHOOSE COLLABORATION OVER COMPETITION

“WHILE THEIR STOREFRONTS SIT AT THE INTERSECTION OF TONTITOWN AND SPRINGDALE, THEIR MISSIONS ARE SEAMLESSLY WOVEN TOGETHER.”
“Always do pictures first,” said Rachel Virden, owner of be.dynamic. “You cannot bring this group of women together and do pictures after.”
Two months ago, on a day revitalized with the warmth and clarity of spring, I met with three Northwest Arkansas business owners. These women have turned a shared corner of our community into a destination for wellness. Alongside Rachel were Erin Werner, owner of Activate IV and Cryotherapy, and Roni Dickerscheid, owner of Burn Boot Camp. While their storefronts sit at the intersection of Tontitown and Springdale, their missions are seamlessly woven together.
Rachel’s exhortation at the beginning of the interview was not reproachful but cautionary, suggesting the good-natured volatility that comes with true emotional connection. Silence from Erin and Roni confirmed their agreement. My thought as a lifestyle editor was that finding three female business owners with such an unshakeable appreciation for each other was comparable to striking gold.
Like the rest of us, Erin, Roni, and Rachel each have their own stories. But uniting them is a harmony of perspective that emboldens them individually. The significance here is not in what they’ve overcome

“THE SIGNIFICANCE HERE IS NOT IN WHAT THEY’VE OVERCOME THEMSELVES, BUT IN WHAT THEY’VE DONE FOR OTHERS GIVEN WHAT THEY’VE OVERCOME— AND ESPECIALLY WHAT THEY’VE OVERCOME TOGETHER.”
themselves, but in what they’ve done for others given what they’ve overcome—and especially what they’ve overcome together.
Erin worked as an ER nurse for almost fifteen years. Facing burnout and disillusionment with her initial career, she began to question a long-held skepticism toward functional medicine. The more she applied its principles to her own life, the more she came to believe in it. This ultimately led to her opening the wellness and recovery clinic known as Activate IV.
“I loved it until I didn’t,” Erin said, relating back to her career as an ER nurse. “Then the Lord opened the doors I walked through to start this wellness space.”
Activate IV offers hydration therapy, cryotherapy, and advanced recovery services for athletes and individuals seeking improved health, energy, and recovery.
Meanwhile, Roni began her professional career at Walmart but decided corporate life was incongruent with the one she desired. Her decision to leave followed a high-risk pregnancy and limited maternity leave, a period filled with uncertainty and fear. It was then that she discovered Burn Boot Camp, a gym offering
45-minute, high-intensity interval training for all fitness levels. Since then, she has started her own Burn location in Springdale and owns two others in Northwest Arkansas.
“I left corporate buying, followed a calling, and opened Burn to create a community,” Roni said. “Springdale felt like the last hometown with real, diverse connections.”
As for Rachel, who graduated from physical therapy school in 2010, she spent years working in traditional settings before asking the following question: “If physical therapists are the movement experts, why are we not in the prevention space?” So, she built something different. At be.dynamic in Springdale, her team sees every client oneon-one, striving to know who people are, not just what hurts.
“You don’t have to settle for disconnected care when you surround yourself with the right people,” Rachel said.
Each of these stories represents how these women have faced unique challenges and overcome them. But there are many other challenges they share. Every day brings families to care for, unpredictable situations to handle, and businesses to run. That’s not even to mention the hardships they faced when

“coronavirus” was metamorphosing into all-caps “COVID,” and they were still trying to get their businesses off the ground.
What’s truly remarkable is how they continually overcome new challenges together. When two tires from an eighteen-wheeler recently smashed through the front windows of be.dynamic, Erin and Roni opened their doors so Rachel and her staff could squeeze in some of their patients. These women illustrate the analogy that kites fly against the wind, not with it.
Between such challenges, a unified perspective has been established. That perspective is defined by helping others overcome their own challenges and grows from a steady optimism that anything is possible through faith.
“Like Erin said, it’s the Lord’s work when door after door starts to open in ways you don’t anticipate,” Roni said. “When you have faith, sit still, and listen, the right things always come.”
Most of all is how they’ve integrated their successes. As a power of three, these women have created a holistic haven of health in our community, operating a threefold approach to wellness in recovery, exercise, and physical therapy. At the intersection of Tontitown and Springdale, three parts have come together.
With a shared clientele and mutual support system, Erin, Roni, and Rachel help others on the basis that challenges are best faced in teams. In choosing collaboration over competition, they show that success comes in unison, or sometimes threes.

“AS A POWER OF THREE, THESE WOMEN HAVE CREATED A HOLISTIC HAVEN OF HEALTH IN OUR COMMUNITY, OPERATING A THREEFOLD APPROACH TO WELLNESS THROUGH RECOVERY, EXERCISE, AND PHYSICAL THERAPY.”

INSPIRATION FOR A MOTHER/ DAUGHTER DIY DAY
ARTICLE BY MEL BOBAN
An afternoon spent together is priceless with today’s busy schedules. Instead of going out, staying in can provide quaint, quiet one-on-one time for a mother and daughter (or multiple daughters). Finding time on calendars is the hard part, and filling that time is all fun from there. Here are a few favorite ideas for inspiration that may spark excitement for planning those special times together.
Custom DIY charm necklaces and bracelets are trending. Gather a theme idea: birthstones, family initials, travels or even favorite hobbies, and procure charms from your local craft store or online shop. Selecting charms for each other also could be a fun way to bring delight to the crafting occasion. Necklaces and bracelets can be made for each other, or as future gifts for upcoming occasions such as a family wedding, a birthday milestone or an anniversary.

03 Meal Prep
Text conversations around kitchen tips or ingredient procurement seem endless. Spend some time together in the kitchen preparing favorite family recipes, sharing Mom’s best tips and tricks. Choosing freezer-friendly meals is a great way to walk away with meals for upcoming busy days. There’s nothing like Mom’s recipes!
Storytelling makes for the best memories. Structure memory recall by filming or journaling interview-style question-and-answer sessions, cataloging information for future generations. Videos and notes with detailed family adventures are priceless, and we all always wish we had more of them.

Sitting in the tasting room at Sassafras Springs Vineyard and Winery, I was reminded of somewhere I can’t quite place. People use phrases like déjà vu to describe such experiences, but I was inclined to take this a step further.
The term “the imaginal” was coined by philosophers of the twentieth century. The meaning of this term is a realm that exists somewhere between everyday life and the imagination. It’s accessible through imaginative lives and visible through the “eye of the heart.”

Some places remind us of others because of their imaginal quality. They invite people to enter and become immersed in experiences that go beyond the immediate senses. Imaginal spaces do this, taking us beyond the senses by moving us through them. We’re reminded of places we’ve been to before, or sometimes places that exist only in our minds.
Since starting in 2014, Sassafras has expanded from 13 acres of Houston Nutt’s old horse farm into 60 acres of preserved countryside. Cushioned between the rolling hills and natural springs are—in addition to the winery itself—patios, event spaces, wedding venues, and lodging facilities. Sassafras is host to a variety of occasions, from birthday parties and friendly catch-ups, to corporate events and wedding celebrations.
But above all, this started from the imagination of one Springdale native and her husband: Cheryl and Gene Long. Cheryl has lived in Northwest Arkansas for her entire life and has witnessed firsthand the ways in which it has developed over the years. Having been a Springdale cheerleader for five years in the 1970’s, she continues to cheer her city on.
Cheryl had always dreamt of owning a wedding venue; Gene, a winery. They had traveled far and wide, making it to many vineyards and idyllic spaces along the way. So, they decided to make one for themselves and their community back at home, bringing two ideas into one.
Successful careers as insurance executives gave them the stability and the spirit to get started. From then on, a shared imagination laid out the path before them. Together, they talked things over and drew up visions for what could be. In the meantime, dairy barns and horse stables were transformed into reception areas and wedding venues. What could’ve been now is.
Today, the deck is alive with conversation. People walk around the property. Children chase gentle water trickling down streams. Glasses clink for wedding anniversaries while just down below, vows are being shared for the first time. It’s an all encompassing space for all different walks and stages of life.
Another kind of harmony runs throughout the property. From the eaves of the trees, to the grass growing greener by the second, to the mixed-use spaces of wood and stone in between, a unity sits at the heart of it all. While each space has something unique to offer, a tender thread ties them all together: family.
While Cheryl and Gene remain involved, their children have joined them in this venture. Drew Gorton, the general manager, has worked alongside his brother, Derek, and sister-in-law, Sarah, for years to manage day-to-day operations. As Derek manages outdoors, vineyard, and landscaping activities, his wife, Sarah, runs the events. A third brother, Denton, also helps regularly with operations and outdoor tasks.
“My mom and step-dad were the visionaries behind the business, 100%,” Drew said. “After graduating college, I was looking at financial planning, but I decided to come out here and see what was happening for a couple years instead.”
CONTINUED >

This was about two years after Sassafras had opened. At this point, Cheryl and Gene were looking at backing away from working at the vineyard full time. After seeing how well he and his siblings could balance on the barrels, Drew decided to stay onboard.
“It truly is a family affair,” Drew said. “We’ve all taken up our own parts and continue to run with them.”
Drew expressed their commitment to the highest quality at every level, and the siblings work together to achieve this. With their parents having set the example before them, they continue to source premium fruit from the West coast for popular varietals that don’t grow well locally. They do, however, grow their rosé on-site.
All of the crushing, pressing, fermenting, aging, and bottling is done on property, using real corks, heavy bottles, and premium labels (with the help of an automated bottling line
shipped over from Italy). One of their goals for this year is to enter statewide distribution.
Wine-tastings are available every day by reservation. And with all of the sites, scenes, and products at hand, Sassafras has quickly formed a number of traditions. One of these traditions includes a Mother’s Day Brunch event.
Beyond that, everything Sassafras has become relates back to Cheryl and Gene. They had an imagination, and they followed it. They had a vision and they brought it to life. To make this full circle, that is the imaginal space.
Human beings reach their greatest potential when living in this way. Through inspiration, innovation, and creation, people thrive. This happens not only because people are fulfilling their purpose, but also because they are inviting everyone else to join in.

“WHETHER IT’S A VIEW FROM THE DECK OR THE CHAPEL RUINS, SOMETHING FEELS FAMILIAR.”
Motherhood realizes that potential in a very special way. From playing house as children to living it as adults, creation eventually goes beyond the self and into a family. Imagination, in turn, becomes more than a space you inhabit alone, turning into a shared space of creativity.
At Sassafras Springs Vineyard and Winery, like many of those special places we stumble upon from time to time, the imaginal space becomes complete in the eye of the beholder. From the imagination of Cheryl and Gene, we’re invited to see not just what lies before us, but the scenes that inspired them on the other side.
Whether it’s a view from the deck or the chapel ruins, something feels familiar. Somewhere between conversation and daydream, between a glass of wine and a slice of pizza, you feel like you’re in a million wonderful places just by this one.

The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”
She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s , she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?
A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?
A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.
Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?
A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.
Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?
A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?
A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.
This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle podcast.
“Trust is the only metric that actually compounds.”

INSPIRED BY MOMS EVERYWHERE
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAROL BLANCHET
Pretty in Pink tastes like the iced, grownup version of strawberry shortcake — buttery and warm from the brownbutter vanilla espresso, topped with a light, airy strawberry cold foam that brings that freshfruit sweetness. It’s creamy without being heavy, sweet without being sugary, and it finishes with that soft, nostalgic strawberry lift. A little dessert energy, a lot of everyday comfort.
Ingredients
• 1 Tablespoon browned butter
• 2 shots of Talking Crow espresso (we used single origin decaf Mexico)
• ½ - 1 ounce of vanilla simple syrup
• 3 Tablespoon heavy whipping cream
• 2 Tablespoons milk
• 1 Tablespoon sugar
• Dehydrated strawberries (crushed to powder to make ½ teaspoon)
Directions
1. Start by browning some good butter over medium heat, stirring constantly until the butter is brown.
2. Brew your espresso shots and pour them along with the brown butter into a small vessel. Whisk with a milkfrother until completely emulsified. Let it cool slightly.
3. Fill your favorite 10 oz glass with ice.
4. Add the brown butter/espresso.
5. Add the vanilla simple syrup.
6. Make your strawberry cold foam by combining the heavy whipping cream, milk, sugar and dehydrated strawberry powder. Mix with a milk frother until double in size and thickened, but still pourable.
7. Top the drink with the strawberry cold foam and a tiny sprinkle of the strawberry powder.
8. Sip and enjoy!
Shortly after starting her roasting journey, Carol was diagnosed with extreme adrenal fatigue and ordered to give up caffeine. Switching to decaf felt like a compromise she wasn't willing to make. That’s when she and Eric decided to pivot, focusing on roasting decaf that tastes amazing and satisfies just like regular coffee. It was in that moment that Talking Crow truly began.
(so easy, so delicious, and just pennies)
Ingredients
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 cup water
• 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste *
Directions
1. Mix together in a saucepan over medium-low heat and stir until dissolved. Let it sit to cool and flavors marry. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
* If using vanilla extract, add it after the sugar has dissolved and you have removed it from heat.
