Exploring Your Own Backyard
July 2025 PUBLISHER

You don’t have to go far to find something worth exploring—sometimes the most meaningful discoveries are right in your own backyard. That’s exactly how I feel about Springdale and Tontitown—places that reveal their charm when you slow down and take a closer look. Whether you’re coasting along the Razorback Greenway or sharing a plate of authentic Italian or Mexican food, life here is packed with hidden treasures—just waiting for you to take the time to explore and discover them. New experiences don’t always require new destinations—sometimes, a shift in perspective is all it takes to uncover something remarkable nearby. I was introduced to Springdale when my boyfriend and I first started dating. He lived in Bentonville and I was in Fayetteville, so Springdale became our midway point—and the perfect spot for countless date nights. As we explored downtown together, we discovered the Razorback Greenway, colorful murals, and incredible food I had never noticed before. It quickly became one of our favorite places. There are so many hidden gems in our community that I love to share with friends and family whenever I can. This magazine was created to celebrate those moments—to help you rediscover the places and people that make Northwest Arkansas shine. Whether it’s an afternoon on the trail, a visit to a small neighborhood grocery store, or a conversation with a neighbor whose family has lived here for generations, there’s rich culture, history, and connection to be found in our own backyard.

FROM COASTLINES to coffee grinds
A JOURNEY OF LOVE, ADVENTURE, AND DECAF COFFEE ARTICLE BY KENAH SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC AND CAROL BLANCHET

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FO OD + BE VE RAGE
Eric holding an article he was featured in during his time as a diver.
Over thirty-seven years ago in sunny Southern California, a broken-down car sparked a lifelong adventure. Carol needed a mechanic and Eric happened to be in the right spot at the right time. Thankfully those small, blinking lights decorating Carol’s dash led to something much bigger – eight children, decades of travel, a roasting company, and a love story that’s still unfolding. Their journey has taken them across the Pacific Northwest, it has tucked them away into forests, tiny coastal towns, and moody mountain valleys, each stop another chapter in a life filled with continuous motion. Drawn to the sandy coast of California in hopes of being a Hollywood stuntman, Eric was led from the northern bounds of Connecticut. Originally aiming for the spotlight in dreams of being on film sets Eric was instead enticed by the ocean’s depths. After getting his diving certification for stunting, Eric couldn’t shake the salty water from his veins, and found himself drawn to working as a commercial diver and captain in the cold waters off the coasts of California and later Washington. Tasked with anything from under water welding, scrubbing the bottoms of the ships, guiding the boats CONTINUED >

into port, and even diving to the depths to find lost engagement rings, the thrill of the water always pulled him under. Carol—forever his partner in life and adventure— made a home in every place they were called to, raising a beautiful family and turning the everyday into art as their journey took them from California up the coast to Washington. Together, they turned constant movement, growth, and new challenges into a way of life – rooted not in place, but in each other. Now, they’ve landed in the quiet hills of the Ozarks. Settling down in this beautiful town we call Springdale. Where their adventure continues to brew! Talking Crow Coffee Roasters, their small batch roasting company, focuses on the ceremony in every cup. Giving new flavor and the same cherished ritual to every decaf blend or single origin they produce. For them, coffee is more than a drink; it’s a way of coming home, no matter where they are. When Eric and Carol, started their coffee roasting company, they drew inspiration from Eric’s childhood companion – Tony, his talking pet crow. As Eric was a boy Tony and him were inseparable. Tony would often break out of his enclosure to
chase Eric’s bus on its way to school, often making Eric have to explain to the bus driver that, they had to stop the bus now, because his crow was following them. It always took some convincing, but as all the children chimed in the bus driver ultimately relented. Opening the bus doors with a sort of awe as they were greeted by nothing less than a chattering black bird. Soon Tony’s fame surpassed the average pet and he made it in to the local news where he was commemorated for his shining personality and charismatic spirit. The name “Talking Crow Coffee Roasters” was chosen as a tribute to Tony’s unique attributes and the joy he brought to Eric’s life. Just like Tony, the company aims to make a statement and they do just that, with their bold flavors, unique mission, and their story that is full of heart. The legacy of Tony the talking crow lives on in every bag of coffee, each cup brewed with love and care. Carol and Eric’s story isn’t just about the adventurous life they’ve led, but the memories they’ve created along the way. Each new step leading them where they are today. And every morning, over a steaming mug, they’re reminded: adventure brought them together, but it’s love and good coffee that’s kept them going.
They drew inspiration from Eric’s childhood companion – Tony, his talking pet crow.

A Lime Mint Rose Mojito adds a floral twist to the classic mojito, creating a refreshing and elegant cocktail. Here’s a recipe that balances the traditional lime and mint with the delicate aroma of rose.
Ingredients: • 2 oz Gin (or Vodka) • 1.5 oz Fresh Grapefruit Juice • 1 oz Pear Liqueur (or Pear Juice) • 0.75 oz Fresh Lime Juice • 1 sprig of Rosemary • Sparkling water • Garnish: Rosemary sprig, grapefruit slice, pear slice Instructions: Place the rosemary sprig in a cocktail shaker. Lightly muddle the rosemary to release its oils. Add the gin (or vodka), grapefruit juice, pear liqueur and lime juice to the shaker. Add ice. Shake well until thoroughly chilled. Strain the mixture into a chilled glass filled with ice. Top with sparkling water or Prosecco. Garnish with a rosemary sprig, a grapefruit slice, and a pear slice.
Ingredients: • 1 bottle wine (such as Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio or Garnacha) • ½ cup brandy or rum • ½ cup elderflower liqueur • 1 cup sparkling water • 1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced • ½ cup fresh raspberries • ½ cup fresh blueberries • ¼ cup fresh mint leaves • 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary • 1 cucumber, thinly sliced (optional) • 1 lime, thinly sliced Instructions: In a large pitcher, combine the white wine, brandy (or rum), and elderflower liqueur. Stir gently to mix.Add the sliced strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, mint leaves, rosemary sprigs, and cucumber slices to the pitcher. Gently muddle the berries and herbs slightly to release their flavors. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld. Just before serving, add the sliced lime and sparkling water or club soda. Stir gently. Serve the sangria over ice, ensuring each glass gets a mix of fruit and herbs.
Ingredients: • 10 fresh mint leaves • 1 lime, cut into wedges • 2 tablespoons white sugar (or simple syrup, to taste) • 2 ounces white rum • 1 ounce rose water (adjust to taste, as it can be potent) • Club soda or sparkling water • Garnish: Mint sprigs, lime wedges, edible rose petals (optional) Instructions: Muddle: Place the mint leaves and lime wedges in a glass. Add sugar. Use a muddler to gently crush the mint and lime. Pour the white rum and rose water into the glass. Stir well. Fill the glass with ice. Top with club soda or sparkling water. Stir gently. TUR NBOW THURSDAYS
Where Springdale Comes Alive with Music ARTICLE BY KENAH SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY BY DOWNTOWN SPRINGDALE
22
T R E N D SE T T E R | ARTS + CU LT U RE
There’s something magical about a Thursday evening at Turnbow Park in downtown Springdale. As the sun begins to dip behind Emma Street, the heart of the city pulses with the sound of guitars, laughter, and clinking cups from nearby patios. Welcome to LIVE! at Turnbow – turning a local walk-through garden into one of Springdale’s most vibrant community spaces.
It’s the kind of night that reminds you why community matters – where you don’t need tickets, fancy clothes, or even a plan. Held on the last Thursday of the month by the Downtown Springdale Alliance, starting in spring and continuing through early fall, Turnbow is transformed from 6:30pm to 9:30pm into its own mini music festival, and the best part? It’s totally free. You can roll in with a blanket, a few friends, maybe a dog or two, and soak in sounds that range from bluesy folk to soul-stirring gospel. The variety of music always ensures that there is something on the books for everyone and the trailside location allows easy access, motivating listeners to ride their bikes or take a stroll from the surrounding neighborhoods. Local food trucks park just steps away, the Downtown Outdoor Dining District means drinks
are allowed, and patios of local restaurants back up to the venue, making for a perfect place to perch all night while enjoying the free entertainment provided to the community. You’ll see kids dancing in the grass, couples swaying to the beat, and the occasional grandma who sings along to every word of the song. It’s the kind of night that reminds you why community matters – where you don’t need tickets, fancy clothes, or even a plan. Just show up and let the music find you. So mark your calendar. Bring a chair, a friend, maybe a snack or two. And let Turnbow do what it does best: make your Thursday unforgettable! JULY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/S P R I N G DA L E

*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.
While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).

Hidden Gems in Springdale, Arkansas Ride the Greenway with the Springdale Bike Club
Air up those tires, adjust that helmet, and set your sights on the Greenway, because Springdale is waiting, and it’s ready to ride. Over the past year, Springdale, Arkansas has invested deeply in curating outdoor spaces and experiences for its surrounding community. One shining example is the grand reopening of Luther George Park last October, following a much-anticipated two-year renovation. With its transformation complete, the park now stands as a true gateway to the Razorback Regional Greenway and a symbol of the city’s growing curation of outdoor community spaces.

You can start your ride at Luther George Park, a family-friendly space complete with shade trees, a vibrant selection of play equipment, beautiful picnic tables, and a breath taking art installation there to welcome you in. It’s the perfect spot to stretch, snack, and prep for your adventure. From there, the Greenway unfurls like a winding ribbon through Springdale, smoothly paved, well-maintained, and full of quiet charm. One of the city’s most cherished programs is the Springdale Bike Club, a welcoming and ever-growing community of riders of all backgrounds and experience levels. The club meets every Tuesday night at seven in the evening for a twelve mile ride along the Greenway. In rain or shine, you’ll always find someone ready to ride. The only thing that stops this group of avid cyclists is a flash of lightning.
What makes this group special isn’t just the trail, it’s the community that has been slowly built upon the passion to ride and enjoy the outdoors. Riders say it’s the camaraderie, encouragement, and connection that keeps them coming back week after week. On warm evenings, you might see up to thirty riders gliding down the path together, but in colder months, a smaller crew of dedicated riders help keep the tradition alive. And if you don’t catch them on the trail, you might find this hard working crew unwinding at Mr. Taco Loco, where you can spot them out on the patio seats, swapping stories of the ride over well earned baskets of tacos and ice cold drinks. Springdale may not be the first place that comes to mind for a cycling adventure, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. It’s a place where the riding is serene, the people are passionate, and hidden gems are waiting to be discovered around every bend.

Nestled in the rolling hills of Arkansas, Tontitown stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Italian immigration to the United States. What began as a tight-knit community in the late 19th century has now grown into a vibrant town where past and present intertwine, most notably through its celebrated vineyards and wineries. One such place, Tontitown Winery, run by a family with deep Italian roots, captures the essence of the town’s heritage and commitment to cultural preservation. Known for its lively bingo nights and delicious wines, the winery offers more than entertainment, it creates a place for family, where anyone can enjoy a night out with the comfort of feeling right at home. Tontitown’s story is shaped by waves of Italian immigrants who arrived in the U.S. during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Members of the Italian Catholic community, guided by Father Pietro Bandini, founded the town in 1898. They brought with them the tradition of grape cultivation and winemaking, which soon flourished in the Ozark soil—becoming both a cornerstone of the local economy and a lasting source of pride. In 1907, a man from northern Italy arrived in Tontitown, seeking to make a life for himself. His name was Nazzareno Ranalli, and he would become the great-grandfather of the current owner of one of the area's prominent wineries, Heather Peachee. The Ranalli Family’s first homestead marked the beginning of a multigenerational legacy that continues to thrive to this day. Her father still resides on the original land where her great grandfather fermented his first batch of wine, nurturing a tradition that has now spanned over a century.
Heather now runs the winery alongside her lifelong friend Kara Jo, who is also of Italian descent. Kara Jo traces her heritage to her great, great-grandmother Enrica Pianalto Ardemagni and great, great-grandfather Felix Ardemagni. Kara Jo shares Heather’s passion for preserving their cultural legacy. Together, they’ve transformed the winery into both a thriving business and a community gathering place—bringing new energy to a town once defined solely by agriculture. Both women truly embody the spirit of Tontitown’s Italian roots. The winery has become a cherished local destination. On Wednesday nights, it hosts packed bingo games, while weekends bring live music that draws people of all ages. But Heather and Kara Jo are more than just successful business women; they’re stewards of history. Both serve on the board of the Tontitown Historical Society and are active members of the Historical Museum. They are dedicated to ensuring that the stories, sacrifices, and contributions of early Italian families are never forgotten. In bridging the gap between generations, Heather and Kara Jo blend the old-world traditions of northern Italy with the southern charm of the Arkansas. For Heather, the vineyard is a tribute to her great-grandfather, a way to honor the hard work and vision that helped shape the town. Tontitown’s story is one of perseverance, family, and tradition. It’s rooted in the soil, nurtured by Italian immigrants who brought their culture, faith, and resilience to Arkansas. Today, thanks to the dedication of Heather, Kara Jo, their families, and the Historical Society, Tontitown’s rich Italian heritage continues to thrive in the daily life of the community—and will for generations to come.
