Southlake’s secrets to having quintessentially classic style!

September 2025 PUBLISHER

Jon Calvin | jon.calvin@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R I AL C O O R D I N ATO R

Mandy Calvin | mandy.calvin@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R

I hope this letter finds you inspired and ready to embrace the beauty of self-expression. Style is such an extraordinary part of life—it’s far more than the clothes we wear or the accessories we choose. Style is woven into every detail of our existence, from the way we decorate our homes to the art and music we enjoy, the books we read, and even how we interact with the world around us. It’s the unique thread that creates the tapestry of who we are. What makes style so captivating is its deeply personal nature. It evolves alongside us as we explore new interests, embrace our quirks, and express what we value most. It’s a language without words, a powerful tool for connection that can bridge differences and spark shared understanding. Here in Southlake, we’re fortunate to have endless opportunities to celebrate and explore style. Whether it’s through visiting local boutiques, supporting creative entrepreneurs, or simply drawing inspiration from our city’s vibrant culture, there’s so much to ignite our creativity and lift our spirits. This month, I encourage you to think of style as an authentic expression of yourself. The most beautiful style is one that reflects who you truly are—your passions, your story, your individuality. And the incredible thing is that no one else in the world can replicate that. So go ahead, celebrate your unique style. Whether you’re exploring new trends, blending classic elements, or creating something entirely original, let this issue inspire you to embrace the power of self-expression. Here’s to being unapologetically and uniquely you!

Designing the Heart Behind Every Stylish Home ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BROWN-THOMAS PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE LEWIS PHOTOGRAPHY, SAMANTHA FARRIS

There is something sacred about home. It’s where our lives unfold, where laughter spills across dinner tables, where children grow, and where love leaves its mark on every surface. For Jon Atwood, founder of Atwood Custom Homes, building homes has never been about square footage or status. It’s about legacy. A promise to create not just elegant spaces, but meaningful ones. Atwood Custom Homes doesn’t just build houses. They build belonging. When you step inside an Atwood home, you feel it immediately. The light. The flow. The calm. It’s in the subtle way the floorplan supports connection, in the textures that invite touch, in the quiet confidence of CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/ S O UT HL A KE

a space designed with people in mind. These are homes that live and breathe and hold stories. Because they were built with one thing above all: intention. Jon Atwood launched Atwood Custom Homes in 2009—one of the most uncertain times in the housing market. With no showroom, no funding cushion, and no private office to retreat to, he took a leap of faith and began his journey from a small home office. What he lacked in resources, he made up for with vision, grit, and an unwavering sense of accountability. “I poured my heart and soul into every project,” Jon reflects. “I knew that if we stayed focused on value, on doing good work for people who trusted us, it would grow.” And grow it did. Today, Atwood Custom Homes is one of Southlake’s most trusted boutique luxury builders, known throughout the community for leading with character, craftsmanship, and care. But Jon’s story didn’t begin in construction. From 1996 to 2001, he worked in outside sales, building lasting relationships with homebuilders across the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Eventually, an opportunity arose to step into the custom home world under a mentor. He took it—and never looked back. Years of hands-on learning gave him a foundation rooted in excellence and empathy. When the time Jon Atwood of Atwood Custom Homes

came to branch out on his own, Jon built his brand on the belief that every client deserved transparency, respect, and a home tailored to their real life, not just a Pinterest board. “I saw a need for smaller homes that still offered the very best amenities,” he shares. “So, we built packages with value in mind: homes that felt elevated without being excessive.” That commitment to value remains one of Atwood Custom Homes’ guiding principles. Presently, the company operates from their dedicated offices and design studio in Southlake, and they remain proudly boutique. “We’re not trying to be the biggest,” Jon says. “We’re focused on being the most intentional.” That intention shows up in every detail. From the carefully curated product selections to the collaborative design meetings, clients are at the center of the process. They come with inspiration, and Atwood’s team helps shape those ideas into timeless, livable realities. Whether it's a mudroom that doubles as a family command center or a kitchen layout that effortlessly hosts three generations, every detail serves a purpose. “Clients today come with a lot of vision,” Jon explains. “They’ve seen it all on social media, and our job is to help translate that vision into something that has longevity and real value.” Atwood Custom Homes isn’t just a builder, it’s a culture. Inside their Southlake office, there are no closed doors. Everyone works shoulder-to-shoulder. From the design team to the project managers, the environment is collaborative and fluid. “Team building and education is our backbone,” Jon says. “We all work together to meet the client’s needs.” The company is small by design, but mighty in talent. Jon still oversees the day-to-day operations, but credits his success to the people around him. “We’ve got creative designers, two energetic young project managers, and an admin who keeps everything moving so we can stay focused on the field,” he shares. “I learn from them every day.” And they learn from him. Jon’s leadership style is grounded in humility, honesty, and human connection. “It’s not a numbers game,” he says. “Each home has a story and often, a relationship that continues long after the final walk-through.” That heart-led philosophy is deeply personal. Jon and his wife, Trisha, share a blended family of nine children. Their weekends are a beautiful chaos of dance rehearsals, baseball games, volleyball tournaments, karate practice, and more than a few birthday parties. “It takes a village,” Jon laughs. “We rely on friends and

“Perhaps the most extraordinary thing Jon Atwood builds isn’t a home,” a client once said. “It’s the feeling of belonging.”

other parents to help us shuffle everyone where they need to be.” It’s this very real, very relatable home life that shapes Jon’s understanding of what his clients need. “We know what it’s like to live a full life,” he says. “So, when we design a home, we think about how it’s actually going to be lived in. Where backpacks will be dropped. Where the family dog will nap. Where dinner will be shared on a Tuesday night.” That lived-in wisdom, paired with a “can-do” attitude, infuses every build. Atwood Custom Homes is constantly educating themselves on new products and amenities to ensure their clients get the best of what the industry offers. But they don’t chase trends for the sake of staying trendy. “We’re always striving to stay ahead of design demands,” Jon says, “but it’s about smart design, not just what’s flashy.” And while Atwood’s homes speak for themselves, Jon’s quiet generosity speaks volumes.

22

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HO ME + D E SIGN

This year, he joined four other builders in contributing to a custom home project benefitting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The initiative will raise life-saving funds for children battling cancer: a cause close to his heart. Giving back is part of the Atwood DNA, even if Jon prefers not to shout it from the rooftops. It’s woven into the way they do business: one sale at a time, one lot at a time, one client at a time. Always with a sense of stewardship. Always with care. So, what truly sets Atwood Custom Homes apart? It’s not just their architectural precision or design-forward approach. It’s the feeling. The intangible, unforgettable sense that you’re home. When you walk into an Atwood home, it doesn’t feel staged or stiff. It feels like life is meant to happen there. Like your favorite people are just around the corner. Like your story already belongs within those walls. It’s in the light that pours through wellplaced windows. The way a porch invites a neighbor to linger. The way a room flows naturally, almost intuitively. These aren’t coincidences—they’re the result of a builder who sees his work as sacred. “Perhaps the most extraordinary thing Jon Atwood builds isn’t a home,” a client once said. “It’s the feeling of belonging.” And that might just be the Atwood difference. It’s in the dinner table where stories are passed from one generation to the next. The hallway where backpacks are flung and hugs exchanged before school. The quiet nook where someone curls up with a book in the afternoon sun. These quiet, sacred moments are where Jon’s work truly lives. He builds for the echoes of childhood laughter. For the candlelight of anniversaries. For the joy of gathering. For the rhythm of real life. Because at the end of the day, it’s not the crown molding or countertops that make a home unforgettable. It’s the peace of knowing you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.

Sleek black is always a classy option, but adding a bit of fringe to a beautifully cut black dress amps up the whole look up.

• Luxury Browns & Burnt Oranges: Think chestnut, cognac, and burnt sienna—tones that nod to rustic luxury with timeless depth. • Vibrant Blues & Electric Accents: Bright ceruleans and cobalt blues bring playful contrast to neutral outfits and minimalist shapes. • Regal Purples: Shades like aubergine, lilac, and eggplant make statements in structured dresses and cozy knits. • Seasonless Soft Neutrals: Sand, butter yellow, navy, and dove grey offer a subdued elegance perfect for quiet luxury looks. Fall 2025 fashion is about balance—between volume and minimalism, softness and edge, color and calm. Style and silhouette trends embrace bold proportions, softened femininity, and smart, pared-back classics. • Volume & Structure: Expect oversized puffers, peplum details, and exaggerated shoulders—fashion that speaks without shouting. • Asymmetry & Sculptural Tailoring: One-shoulder designs, unexpected closures, and off-kilter tailoring modernize classic shapes. • Faux Fur & Textural Outerwear: Plush, dramatic textures redefine coats as statement pieces—both functional and expressive. • Exposed Layers & Sheer Styling: Lingerie-inspired silhouettes, sheer overlays, and lifted bra moments create daring, feminine layers. Susan Semmelmann

Seasonal Design with Semmelmann Interiors

Step inside a Semmelmann Interiors home, and you’ll feel it before you see it: warmth, depth, intention. Every space is layered with meaning and curated to reflect a life well-lived. This is more than design—it’s connection. And under the creative direction of Susan Semmelmann, that feeling is no accident. Rooted in the belief that home is a sacred refuge, Susan and her team approach every project with what they call radical creativity. Each space is a fusion of artistry and emotion, where elevated craftsmanship meets soulful intention to create interiors that are both couture and deeply personal. This fall, the design world is leaning into warmth, character, and curated comfort. “We’re seeing a major return to natural woods, soft golds, and earth tones that bring soul back into the space,” says Susan. From merlot-stained dining tables to dark wood cabinetry and green velvet stools, clients are craving the richness of lived-in elegance. It’s not just about beauty: it’s about feeling completely at home. Depth is the buzzword of the season. In a world that often feels fast and fleeting, people are searching for something more rooted: design that is thoughtful, grounded, and emotionally resonant. It’s not just about how a space looks, but how it makes you feel the moment you step inside. CONTINUED >

Adding saturated browns to your space can make it cozy and comfy.

That longing is reflected in every detail. Recent projects are embracing color drenching in bold, elevated ways. Think wine-toned walls paired with matching ceilings, rugs, and statement seating. These spaces don’t just coordinate, they envelop. Immersive and intentional, they feel like stepping into a memory still unfolding. It’s not about matching for the sake of symmetry, instead it’s about evoking a mood that lingers. Lighting, once an afterthought, now leads the design conversation. Tiered chandeliers, bold pendants, and globe fixtures with couture energy are doing more than illuminating: they’re anchoring entire rooms and setting the emotional tone. These pieces spark conversation and cast shadows that feel like poetry. Scale, too, is taking center stage. Oversized sectionals, sweeping custom chaises, and double-sided fireplaces dominate floor plans with purpose. Each selection is placed to command attention while allowing the architecture to breathe. The result is powerful, yet never overpowering. “We call it ‘power in the house,’” Susan says. “And that in itself is having a moment.” Texture finishes the story. “Every space we complete ends with texture,” Susan shares. “We’re layering raffia details, ribbed accent walls, velvet sofas, metallic artwork, and leathered stone. It creates that ‘lived-in soul’ our clients are looking for.” These rooms aren’t made for quick impressions; they’re made to hold memories, to welcome, and to become part of the family’s story. Because design, at its core, doesn’t just fill a space, it fills a need. A need for beauty. For stillness. For belonging. At Semmelmann Interiors, the spirit of living is in the giving—designing spaces that serve, inspire, and fill you up so you can pour into others. These layered, intention-filled rooms become the backdrop for Sunday mornings and birthdays, for quiet tears and loud celebrations. They don’t just support a lifestyle—they elevate a legacy. In the end, it’s not about trends or surface-level aesthetics. It’s about meaning. It’s about creating an area that changes the way you feel the moment you walk through the door. A space that grounds you, holds you, reflects you, and reminds you of what truly matters. So as the leaves turn and the air begins to cool, expect interiors to follow suit. Bold. Grounded. Full of heart. And made for the moments that matter most.

LOCA L’S C H OICE | BEAUT Y

For Mandy Puente, owner of Country Roots by Mandy, beauty has always been more than skin deep. What began as a childhood fascination has grown into a full-fledged career of artistry, confidence-building, and connection. “My journey with hair and makeup began 15 years ago,” Mandy shares. “Then, six years ago, I decided to take it to the next level and attended the Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy.” That formal training added a technical foundation to what had already become a deeply personal craft. “Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been fascinated by the power of transformation,” she says. “How a simple hairstyle or a swipe of lipstick can completely shift someone’s mood or confidence.” It wasn’t long before Mandy became the go-to beauty guru for friends and family, discovering along the way that her passion for making others feel beautiful was more than just a hobby—it was her calling.

Today, Mandy’s chair is a place of transformation, inside and out. “I’m inspired by every person who sits in my chair,” she says. “They become my family as soon as they walk in. I love helping people see the best version of themselves.” Her signature style? Soft glam. “It’s the perfect balance between natural and elevated—a glowing complexion, soft neutral tones, seamless blending, and just enough definition to enhance your best features without looking overdone.” The look, she explains, is versatile and timeless, ideal for everything from weddings to a night out.

As fall approaches, Mandy is seeing a resurgence of cozy, effortless styles. “Side parts are coming back, along with lots of lived-in texture and modern bobs,” she says. On the makeup side, warm, earthy tones are taking center stage. “Expect terra-cotta, burnt mocha, and deep berry hues everywhere.” Whether she’s creating camera-ready looks or helping someone feel a little more confident for their everyday routine, Mandy’s goal remains the same: to help each client feel their absolute best.
