The Spirit of Spring with Susan Semmelmann

Southlake is a great place to call Home!

Home. Just four letters, yet it holds so much mean ing. It’s our sanctuary, our foundation, and the place where life unfolds. Home is where we begin and end each day, where our lives take shape, and where our hearts find rest. This month we showcase one of the most incredible estates in the heart of Southlake, 351 S. White Chapel Boulevard. Listed by luxury brokers Troy George and Lucy Noonan of Synergy Realty, the estate is a little slice of heaven in the middle of the hustle and bus tle of Southlake. Think private, country living without the long arduous drive in traffic to drop the kiddos off at school, get to the airport for a trip or head out to dinner and drinks with family and friends.

While the specifics of what “home” looks like vary for each of us, its signifi cance is universal. Susan Semmelmann of Semmelmann Interiors makes it her goal to help people determine what evokes home for them and transforms houses to personal homes and sanctuaries.  Author Wendy Wunder captured it perfectly: “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” With that in mind, this month’s issue focuses on what makes home special—from the warmth of shared meals and thoughtfully designed spaces to the people who bring it all to life.

This month, we had the privilege of connecting with local businesses and individuals who shape this community. Their stories highlight the creativity, resilience, and heart that make this area feel like home. We hope that as you turn these pages, you’ll be inspired to strengthen your connections—whether within your neighborhood, your city, or your own walls.

Many of our readers tell us they hold onto this magazine long after the month on its cover, treasuring it as a piece of home—whether as coffee table art or a source of inspiration. That’s a tradition we’re proud to uphold, and we remain committed to delivering the value you expect each month.

Thank you for welcoming us into your homes. Here’s to making this March a celebration of the spaces and people that matter most.

Happy March!

the spirit OF SPRING

Fresh Ideas, Lasting Style, and a Designer’s Perspective from Susan Semmelmann

Spring is when the house tells the truth.

Not the kind of truth you can measure, but the kind you can feel, standing barefoot in morning light. The places that feel heavy suddenly feel heavier. The rooms that once felt “fine” start to feel unfinished. The palette that once felt clean starts to feel cold. And what you thought was contentment reveals itself as something else entirely: a quiet longing for your home to love you back.

That is what spring does. It does not simply arrive with fresh air. It arrives with a mirror. And in that mirror, many of us find the same question waiting. Not “what’s trending,” but what’s missing? What secret do the most beautiful homes seem to know, the ones that feel warm the second you walk in? The ones that make hosting feel effortless. The ones that hold your life with a kind of calm authority. The ones you don’t just admire, but crave.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SEMMELMANN INTERIORS

Susan and her daughter Madeleine.

Susan Semmelmann has built her career answering that question.

As founder and lead designer of Semmelmann Interiors, Susan has earned her place as a renowned and respected designer whose signature fireplaces, ethe real aesthetic, and couture product offering have caught the attention of many in the industry and beyond. But to reduce her work to aesthetic would be to miss the point. Susan is less interested in decorating a home than she is in shaping the life inside it.

To Susan, the home is not a backdrop. It is not a display case for good taste. It is a formative space, one that carries the power to shape how you feel, how you gather, how you recover, how you show up in the world.

“Home is a sanctuary,” Susan says. “Not a showroom. Not a stage. It’s the place you should be able to exhale, feel safe, and come back to yourself.”

If there is a signature to her spaces, it is that they feel as good as they look. Yes, there are statement moments, the kind the design world whispers about: fireplaces

turned into sculpture, lighting that reads like jewelry suspended midair, materials layered with a couture hand. But what makes her work unforgettable is what you feel inside it: a sense of grounding. A sense of belonging. As if the home was designed not to impress, but to serve.

Susan’s philosophy is a rare one in an era of constant consumption. She does not believe in chasing more. She believes in chasing meaning. Her guiding line, The Spirit of Living Is in the Giving, isn’t a tag line to her. It is the throughline. A method of stewardship by which she indoctrinates her entire life.

She speaks about design the way some people speak about calling: as something that carries responsibility. As something that should create peace, not pressure. Fulfillment, not friction. “Good design grounds you, guides you, and gives back,” Susan says. “It should steady your spirit, support your rhythms, and make everyday life feel more meaningful.”

When people say they don’t love their home, they rarely mean they don’t love the

square footage. Most of the time, they’re describing mismatch. A home that does not support the season of life they’re in. A room that doesn’t know what it’s for. A layout that makes daily rituals feel harder than they need to be. A living room that looks polished but doesn’t invite conver sation. A bedroom that photographs well but doesn’t restore.

Susan begins where the most enduring design always begins: with the person. Before she selects a fabric or a finish, she asks questions that have nothing to do with trends and everything to do with truth. How do you gather? What does your morning feel like? What do you want your evenings to become? Where do you exhale? Where do you pray? What do you want your children to remember about the atmosphere of their home?

In other words, she designs homes that serve the life inside them, not just the eye. “We want your home to serve you,” Susan says. “Because when your home supports you, you have more energy to pour into what matters and more capacity to serve others.”

“Home is a sanctuary,” Susan says. “Not a showroom. Not a stage. It’s the place you should be able to exhale, feel safe, and come back to yourself.”
The serenity of light blue invites connection and joy over a delicious meal with family and friends.

That one idea explains why her homes feel so personal, especially for the woman who has built a beautiful life and now wants her home to reflect the same authority and intention. Not just success, but identity. Not just luxury, but legacy.

This spring, the most elevated homes are shifting in a way that feels both aesthetic and emotional. The palette is warming, but not in a loud way. Think creamy whites that lean buttery instead of blue, taupes, mushroom tones, flax, camel, clay. Neutrals that do not feel blank, but grounded, like the room is exhaling.

Susan has long believed that warmth is not merely a style choice. It’s a sensory experience. It lives in the finish of a surface, the reflectivity of stone, the undertone of a textile, the way natural light moves across the room. A home can be technically beautiful and still feel cold if the materials don’t soften the experience.

Which is why texture is rising as the true marker of lux ury. Not the kind of luxury that performs, but the kind that belongs. Linen that breathes. Velvet that holds light like a jewel. Mohair and bouclé used not as trend statements but as tactile softness. Leathered stone. Fluting. Wood grain that feels organic rather than overly polished.

There is also a return to something we are craving cultur ally, whether or not we can name it: hospitality. Furniture is softening. Curves are returning. Seats are deeper. Layouts are becoming more communal, less rigid, more conversa tional. At first glance these shifts appear purely visual, but they’re emotional, too. We want rooms that hold people well. We want our homes to stop feeling like museums and start feeling like places where laughter is allowed.

And then, in nearly every home Susan designs, there is one moment that feels brave. Not loud. Not random. Just decisive. A sculptural fireplace. A dramatic pendant. A slab of stone that makes the room feel anchored. A cabinet detail that feels custom and intentional. Art that stops you mid sentence. The kind of signature moment that quietly says: this home belongs to someone.

That is where Susan’s philosophy becomes unmistakably her own. She doesn’t design copies of what already exists. She designs spaces that feel original because the people living in them are original. “We design the never been done before,” Susan says. “Not for shock value, but because your home should feel like yours. Original. Personal. Unmistakable.”

That is the difference between a home you admire and a home you love. Admiration is aesthetic. Love is personal. Love is meaning.

This month marks a meaningful milestone for Susan and her team: seven years in business, celebrated in the only way Susan knows how, by letting design become a conduit for generosity. Her team’s latest charitable project debuts this month as part of the St. Jude Dream Home Showplace Tour at Carillon Parc (open to the public through March 22), supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in its mission to save lives. With a goal of raising $1 million, the tour represents Susan’s tenth charity showhome to date, further cementing her belief that beauty should never exist for beauty’s sake alone. To Susan, design is not separate from giving. It is a vehicle for impact.

It’s hard to sit with Susan and not feel the subtext of everything she’s saying: that the home is not simply where you live, it is one of the greatest levers you have to shape how you feel. How you lead. How you mother. How you host. How you recover. How you become.

So if you’re looking at your home this spring and wonder ing why it doesn’t quite feel like you, don’t start with what’s trending. Start with what you’re craving. Start with what you need your home to give you. Warmth. Ease. Beauty. Belonging. A quiet sense of peace that makes you feel, finally, at home.

Because spring isn’t asking you to change everything. It’s inviting you to make it mean something.

SOUTHLAKE’S TESTAMENT TO COMMUNITY

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ST. JUDE CHILDREN’S

THE COLLABORATION OF THE FIVE PREMIER BUILDERS OF CARILLON PARC AND ST. JUDE IS BOTH AMBITIOUS AND INSPIRING.

In the heart of Southlake’s Carillon Parc neighborhood, an extraor dinary vision has taken shape. Five premier builders have come together in a unified effort to raise $1 million in support of the lifesaving mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®. Their collaboration is both ambitious and inspiring, and it stands as a testament to craftsmanship, compassion, and community.

This initiative began in fall 2023 when Atwood Custom Homes, Beckett Graham, Heritage Homes, Kensington Custom Homes, and  WillowTree Custom Homes united to create a neigh borhood where every detail draws from an even greater purpose. After months of planning and design, the homes officially broke ground in April 2025, marking the start of a construction effort defined by heart, vision, and commitment. Each builder pledged $200,000 to the project, a donation that helps ensure families facing childhood cancer never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing, or food.

Now, as the homes near completion, five luxury residences stand as the bold realization of the first ever St. Jude Dream Home Showplace Community. Though each home reflects the unique artistry of its builder, they all share an unmistakable level of refinement. One residence elevates modern living with an archi tectural floating staircase and a glass enclosed wine room, while another channels a French villa aesthetic with a two story eleva tor and a spa framed by cascading water. A third home evokes the romance of the French Riviera with a dramatic curved staircase, dual owner’s suites, and multiple balconies. Another showcases

a steel and glass floating staircase and a striking two story study designed as an architectural centerpiece. And in a thoughtful nod to longevity and sustainabil ity, one residence is built using advanced steel framing and includes a private spa and expansive sliding doors that create seamless indoor–outdoor living. Together, these homes form the centerpiece of a landmark ini tiative that has constructed hope across Southlake.

Open house tours will be available on March 7 8, 12 15, and 19 22 from 10 a.m. 6:00 p.m. Visitors will step into spaces that reflect both elevated craftsman ship and a deeper narrative. Behind every custom feature lies the story of St. Jude and its decades long mission of hope, discovery, and lifesaving progress. Since 1962, St. Jude has helped push the overall child hood cancer survival rate in the U.S. from 20% to more than 80% today and given doctors and researchers the tools and technology they need to make the next groundbreaking discovery. For Southlake, the project has become a source of pride and a powerful reminder of what can happen when a community chooses to make a meaningful difference.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital ® is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life threatening diseases. Its purpose is clear: Finding cures. Saving children.®  It is the only National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to chil dren. When St. Jude opened in 1962, childhood cancer was largely considered incurable. Since then, St. Jude has helped push the overall survival rate from 20% to more than 80% in the United States, and it won't stop until no child dies from cancer. St. Jude shares the breakthroughs it makes to help doctors and research ers at local hospitals and cancer centers around the world improve the quality of treatment and care for even more children. Because of generous donors, fam ilies never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food, so they can focus on help ing their child live. Foundations That Last

A Story of Hope and Home

In a region defined by growth, progress, and opportunity, one of the greatest gifts a com munity can offer its people is stability. Not simply a place to live, but a place to belong. A place to plant roots. A place where futures are built with confidence and pride. That is the heart of Trinity Habitat for Humanity.

Founded in 1989 and serving Tarrant, Parker, Johnson, and Wise counties, Trinity Habitat exists to put love into action by bring ing people together to build homes, commu nities, and hope. Their mission is not rooted in charity, but in partnership, dignity, and the belief that when hardworking families gain access to attainable homeownership, entire communities are strengthened.

Trinity Habitat serves essential workforce families, the people who quietly hold our cities together. Teachers, healthcare work ers, city employees, first responders, service professionals, and countless others who give their days to serving others. These families are not seeking a handout. They are seeking a hand up, and Trinity Habitat provides exactly that: a pathway built on responsibility, com mitment, and shared purpose.

Every Trinity Habitat homeowner earns their place at the table. Partner families contribute 200 hours of sweat equity in place of a traditional down payment and complete financial education to pre pare for long term success. They carry an affordable mortgage and build equity, stability, and pride with every payment. It is a model that honors hard work while opening doors that might otherwise remain closed.

For Alma, that door changed everything. Before Habitat, she and her teenage son lived in an overcrowded home, sharing space with her eldest son and his girlfriend. Despite paying rent each month, privacy and comfort were hard to find. “We just didn’t have enough space,” Alma shares. “It was challenging for both of us.”

Homeownership felt impossible on her own until Trinity Habitat made it attainable. “Habitat makes homeownership possible with payments I can manage,” she says. “It’s more than a house. It’s where we can build memories.”

Trinity Habitat volunteer building on a home in the Garden Springs neighborhood development in Fort Worth, TX.

Closing on her Habitat home means far more than keys. It represents secu rity, stability, and a fresh start. Alma looks forward to giving her son the space he needs to thrive and creating a home that reflects their family. She dreams of building a future rooted in independence. “This is a dream come true,” she says. “Thank you to the vol unteers and sponsors who made this possible. God bless you.”

The homes themselves reflect that same intention. Thoughtfully designed at approximately 1,150 square feet with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a one car garage, each home is built to Energy Star® stan dards and equipped with FORTIFIED Roof™ systems. These features reduce utility costs, protect families from financial strain, and ensure strength is woven into every foundation.

As Fort Worth continues to grow, the need for essential work force homeownership has reached a critical point. Across the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, only 32 attainable homes exist for every 100 low to moderate income families. Trinity Habitat is responding with vision and scale through a multi year initiative to create ten new neighborhoods and build 529 single family workforce homes across the greater Fort Worth area.

The impact extends far beyond housing. When families have stable homes, children thrive. Neighborhoods grow stronger. Financial stress eases. A home becomes a launching point.

Because a home is not the finish line. It is the starting point. It is where uncertainty gives way to possibility and where fami lies build without fear of losing their footing. Trinity Habitat for Humanity is shaping more than neighborhoods. They are shap ing futures, ensuring the people who serve our community can remain rooted in it and build what comes next.

THE HEART OF THE DRAGON COMMUNITY

HOW DRAGONS CARE TURNS COMPASSION INTO ACTION

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Dragons Care is a nonprofit organization that quietly but powerfully supports Carroll ISD teachers, staff, and School Resource Officers facing personal hardships. From illness or injury to family emergencies and unexpected home disasters, Dragons Care provides financial assistance and encouragement, reminding staff that no member of the Dragon community faces challenges alone. The organization is entirely run by parent volunteers, and every penny raised for individual grants goes directly to the employee in need.

Kindergarten teacher Ms. McKinney with her students

In 2025, Dragons Care distributed more than $80,000 in grants to Carroll ISD employees. These funds come from the generosity of community members who give directly to support staff facing hardship. This direct approach allows Dragons Care to respond immediately when a staff member experiences a sud den challenge, ensuring timely support and care.

One example of Dragons Care’s impact involves elementary school teacher Maile McKinney. During a powerful storm in Southlake, a large tree crashed into her home, damaging both the roof and the ceiling. Faced with extensive repairs, Maile might have felt overwhelmed, but Dragons Care stepped in. Along with a grant, she received flowers and a handwritten note reminding her that the Dragon community stood with her. “I have never witnessed this level of support in other districts,” Maile said. “It shows how much our community cares for one another.”

Another story highlights Carroll ISD receptionist Diana Pitman, who faced a personal crisis earlier this year when her home flooded with sewage water on the same day her daughter was hosting a bridal shower. The damage required major repairs and forced Diana and her two dogs to live in a single upstairs bedroom. The situation was especially traumatic because it was the first major challenge she had faced since her husband passed. Carroll ISD colleagues helped move furniture and provide practical support, and Dragons Care provided funds raised by the community to help with repairs. Diana reflected, “I have been truly blessed by my CISD family. Their support made all the difference.”

Stories like these illustrate the mission of Dragons Care and the meaningful difference that direct com munity support can make. By subscribing to the Dragons Care newsletter and following the organi zation on Facebook, supporters can see staff needs as they arise and respond directly, providing imme diate help to employees in need. All information and subscription options are available at www.drag ons care.org. Through the generosity of volunteers and donors, Dragons Care continues to strengthen the Dragon community, ensuring that every staff member knows they are valued, supported, and never alone.

Dragons Care is more than financial support. It is a reminder that the Carroll ISD family extends far beyond classrooms and offices. Whether deliv ering a grant, a note of encouragement, or simply a helping hand during a crisis, Dragons Care embod ies the spirit of a community that rises together in times of need. In a world where hardships can feel isolating, Dragons Care ensures that no Dragon stands alone.
