Celebrating the Season in Southlake

The holiday season is here, bringing with it the sights, sounds, and traditions that make this time of year so magical. For many of us, the holidays are a chance to recreate the joy we felt as children, whether it’s through the twinkle of festive lights, the aroma of holiday baking, or cherished family traditions.

In our family, one tradition we’ve held onto is gathering together to bake Christmas cookies and putting up the tree with "Christmas Vacation" playing in the background. These moments remind me of the magic of the season and the importance of creating joyful memories with loved ones.

This month, we encourage you to support the local businesses of the community. Make your holiday shopping and money spent count by supporting the local business owners that are your neighbors, friends, and family members providing the goods and services we count on throughout the year. We’ve also highlighted the best of what Southlake has to offer during the holidays, from events and entertainment to opportunities for giving back.

While this season is joyful for many, it can also be a difficult time for those who are grieving, lonely, or in need. In the spirit of the season, let’s come together as a community to extend kindness and compassion to those who may be struggling. Whether it’s donating to a local charity, volunteering your time, or simply checking in on a neighbor, every act of generosity makes a difference.

May your holidays be filled with love, peace, and the joy of giving.

Happy Holidays,

December 2025

FAITH, FAMILY AND FINDING JOY IN EVERY SEASON

ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BROWN- THOMAS PHOTOGRAPHY BY @FLETCHATX AND BLUE AMBER

When Tauren Wells speaks, there’s a light in his voice that feels both calm and commanding. It’s the kind of presence that fills a room without effort, grounded yet electric, humble yet full of life. Fresh off hosting the 56th Annual Dove Awards for the third time, the Grammy-nominated artist, pastor, and author doesn’t describe the night as a performance but as a homecoming. “It feels like being that DJ at a family gathering,” he smiles. “Everyone in the room is there to lift up the name of Jesus, to celebrate what He’s doing through the music and the people behind it.”

That light, steady and joyful, has become the mark of his life. For some, Wells is the voice behind the chart-topping anthem Hills and Valleys. For others, he’s the pastor and visionary leading a fast-growing congregation in the Austin area. But for those who know him best, he’s simply a man of faith who loves his family fiercely and has built a life on the quiet pursuit of joy.

Every role he carries as husband, father, artist, preacher, and author moves in rhythm with the same heartbeat. His foundation does not waver when the lights fade or the noise falls silent. Faith keeps him grounded, and family reminds him why he stands at all. In the laughter of four boys and the quiet steadiness of his wife, he finds the kind of joy that cannot be manufactured by applause or measured by success.

It is sacred, hidden inside the ordinary, the place where calling meets heart.

He met his wife, Lorna, in Bible college in 2004. “It took me a while to convince her to marry me,” he laughs. Fourteen years and four sons later—Kanaan, Lawson, Navy, and Banner—fill their home with life. “Our home is full of music, sports, and church,” he says. “There’s always a ball bouncing, a song playing, and people around our table laughing, crying, or fighting. It’s loud, it’s busy, and it’s beautiful, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

The Wells family represents what Tauren teaches: joy that is messy, alive, and rooted in love. Their life is a chorus of sound and spirit, where grace grows in the middle of the noise. It is not perfect, but it is real, and that is where the beauty lives.

Music has been part of his story for as long as he can remember. Growing up in a musical home, he found his voice in the church choir at nine years old. It was there, among the harmonies and hymns, that he discovered music could be more than melody… it could be ministry. “I didn’t always know I’d be a Christian artist,” he says. “But I knew I wanted my life to matter for something eternal. Over time, God opened the doors and made it clear that music was how He wanted me to live that calling out.”

That calling has carried him from small-town sanctuaries to world stages, from singing in youth groups to leading worship for thousands. His songs have become anthems of resilience and faith, uniting generations across the globe. Along the way, he has become an eight-time Dove Award winner, a multiple Grammy nominee, and one of the most influential voices in contemporary Christian music. Yet even after all the accolades, he has never lost sight of what it’s really about. “At the Dove Awards, the only competition is outdoing one another in honoring each other,” he says. “That’s what I love most, the way we cheer one another on.”

His newest chapter, as an author, brings the same heart into written form. Joy Bomb, his debut book, is a reminder that happiness is not shallow but sacred. “Joy Bomb was born out of the conviction that your happiness actually matters to God,” he explains. “For so long, a lot of us grew up believing Christianity is about surviving until heaven. But when I looked at Jesus’ first sermon, the very first word He spoke was ‘Blessed,’ which means happy, joyful, flourishing. That’s not an accident. That’s a revelation.”

The Wells family—Tauren, Lorna, and their children

In it, Wells invites readers to rediscover joy not as an emotional high but as a holy constant: something that lives and breathes through the mundane. “Joy isn’t the absence of problems; it’s the presence of Jesus,” he says. “My hope is that people rediscover joy not as a fleeting feeling but as a person. When you know Him, you find the kind of joy that sustains you through every season.”

Becoming an author was more than a milestone. It was the realization of a dream God planted decades ago. “I can still remember being a kid riding under my mom’s shopping cart with a spiral notebook, scribbling down stories,” he says. “Now to see ‘author’ beside my name feels surreal. It’s like God took that little dream and breathed life into it.”

Joy Bomb is now available wherever books are sold, and its message has begun to ripple far beyond bookstores. It’s being shared in church small groups, highlighted in devotionals, and passed between friends in search of something real—proof that joy is still possible, even here, even now.

That same spirit is at the heart of Church of Whitestone, the Austin-area congregation where Tauren and Lorna serve as co-pastors. What began as a step of faith has grown into a vibrant, multi-generational movement built on the belief that identity is not achieved but received. “From the very beginning, we’ve watched God draw people from all walks of life,” he says. “Week after week, we see generosity, healing, and people

being saved. It’s the most beautiful expression of God’s heart I’ve ever been part of.”

At Church of Whitestone, belonging comes before perfection. It’s a church that feels like family, a place where grace has no prerequisites. “So many of us mistake our identity for what we do, our career, our culture, even our relationships,” he explains. “But who we are is deeper than that. It’s something only God can define.”

Growth has come faster than anyone could have imagined. “At this point, the only places big enough to hold our congregation for one service are the Moody Center or the H-E-B Center,” he says with a laugh. “We’re believing for a miracle— land and a building where our whole church family can gather under one roof.”

Even with that explosive growth, his focus remains on people, especially the next generation. “I see a movement rising,” he says with conviction. “Young people rooted in their identity, unafraid to live boldly for Christ, ready to change the world.”

Between the whirlwind of tours, sermons, and songwriting, he finds peace in the quiet moments with God. “For me, it usually starts early,” he shares. “Coffee, my Bible, a prayer playlist, and a devotional book. Sometimes it’s just me and God on a walk, talking like I would with a close friend. It’s not perfect, but it keeps me anchored.” CONTINUED

Those still moments, the ones nobody sees, are where the work becomes worship. They allow him to show up fully in every role, to love deeply, lead humbly, and live with the kind of purpose that doesn’t need applause to feel fulfilled.

The year ahead is already in motion. Between leading Church of Whitestone and spending Sundays in Austin, he will headline his own national tour, join Phil Wickham’s arena tour, and release a new album, Church Is On Fire. “This record captures what God is doing in this season,” he says. “It’s worship that’s alive, passionate, and centered on His presence.”

Even with the lights and the crowds, his message remains simple and tender. As the holidays approach, he offers a reminder that resonates far beyond the stage. “The birth of Jesus was the moment light broke into darkness, and that same light still shines for us today,” he says. “No matter what this year has looked like, joy or challenge, you can have hope because Emmanuel means God with us. You’re not walking through this season alone.”

That’s the heartbeat of everything he does—the reason he writes, sings, leads, and loves the way he does. Joy is not reserved for mountaintops or perfect seasons. It lives in the middle of real life, in the laughter that spills from a kitchen table, in the tired prayers that turn into peace, and in the small, steady moments that remind us God is near. That is the legacy he is building. Not fame. Not spotlight. Just faith that outlasts the noise, love that reaches past the stage, and joy that keeps shining long after the lights go out.

WHERE HEALING BEGINS

PUGVILLE AT CREEKSIDE

There’s something about a pug that captures your heart the moment you meet one. Maybe it’s the round, soulful eyes or the way their entire body wiggles when they’re happy. Maybe it’s that they love so big without asking for anything in return. Whatever it is, the team behind Pugville has felt it from the very beginning. Located inside Creekside Pet Care Center, one of the area’s

“HONESTLY,

mission. Many of the pugs who arrive at Pugville are in rough shape. Some suffer from untreated eye problems, skin infections, obesity, tumors, and severe dental disease. Others have been neglected so long they’ve forgotten what it means to be loved. Each one is met with gentle hands, medical attention, and time to remember that people can be kind.

WE JUST LOVE THEM.”

most trusted veterinary clinics and a proud partner of Southlake City Lifestyle, Pugville has grown into a haven built on compassion, community, and second chances. What began as a few friends helping a couple of pugs in need has become a rescue operation rooted in love and purpose.

Over the years, Pugville has become a place where pugs receive not just medical care and rehabilitation but also love—the kind that heals what medicine can’t. “We’ve learned so much since those early days,” the team shares. “Every pug teaches us something new about patience, resilience, and what it means to truly start over.”

Their focus on pugs was never really a decision; it was more like a calling. “Honestly, we just love them,” they laugh. “Their quirky personalities, smooshy faces, and huge hearts; it’s impossible not to.”

But behind that laughter is a deeper

Once the medical work begins, the emotional healing follows. DFW Pug Rescue partners closely with Creekside Pet Care Center to place each dog in a foster home where they can decompress, build trust, and rediscover joy. “Our fosters are the heartbeat of everything we do,” they explain. “They give these pugs safety, structure, and the chance to bloom again.”

Among the many stories that have come through Pugville, one stands out. His name is Leonidas, a tiny pug with a fighter’s spirit. When he arrived, he was four months old, hairless from mange, battling infections, and too weak to lift his head. He’d been found wandering the streets, scared and alone. But with medication, good food, and endless love, Leonidas began to heal. His foster poured her heart into his recovery, and soon his coat grew back, his confidence returned, and his puppy energy came bursting through. “The day he

came back for his neuter, we could hardly believe it was the same dog,” they say. “He was jumping, wagging, and full of life.”

Leonidas has since been adopted into a loving forever home with a family that adores him completely.

Life at Pugville is busy, messy, and full of heart. Days start early with feeding, medications, and check-ins on medical cases. In between are socialization walks, playtime, and plenty of pug cuddles.

“They’re little clowns,” one volunteer says with a smile. “No matter how hard the day gets, they always make us laugh.”

That laughter carries the team through long days and the heartbreak that sometimes comes with rescue work.

As the holidays approach, the team is especially mindful of the message they want the community to hear. “Around the holidays, we always remind people that pets aren’t presents,” they share.

“A pug isn’t a gift to unwrap; it’s a life to love. They depend on you every day. They’ll snore next to you, make you laugh, and fill your heart in ways you never expected. But they deserve forever, not just a season.”

Still, for every challenge, there’s a moment of joy that reminds them why they keep going. Donations, fosters, and volunteers are always needed, especially for seniors or pugs with special needs.

“EACH PUG THAT COMES THROUGH OUR DOORS BECOMES PART OF OUR FAMILY.”

“Medical costs can be overwhelming, but every dollar makes a difference,” they explain. “Even sharing our posts on social media helps get these dogs seen.”

Looking ahead, the dream is to keep expanding their foster network and growing Pugville into a place where no pug is ever left behind. “We cry with them, laugh at their silly little snores and toots, and celebrate every milestone,” they say. “Each pug that comes through our doors becomes part of our family. They teach us that love can heal, hope can grow, and second chances are always worth fighting for.”

Because at the end of the day, Pugville  isn’t just about rescuing dogs—it’s about the joy of watching a broken heart learn to love again.

SOFIA ELAINE salon

A Legacy of Love and Style

ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BROWN-THOMAS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA FARRIS

There’s a special kind of beauty that lives inside Sofia Elaine Salon. It’s the kind that comes from more than a great cut or a perfect shade of blonde. It’s born from belonging, connection, and a culture that feels like family the moment you walk through the doors. Every smile, every conversation, and every transformation reflects the heart behind the brand—one built on purpose and passion rather than polish alone.

Owner Erica Lynch built Sofia Elaine Salon on that foundation, a belief that artistry should never come at the cost of community. “Our salon has a family-friendly culture,” she says. “We truly mean that. We serve generations of the same families and support one another like family, too. Clients notice how well we work together, how we lift each other up, and that energy fills the entire salon.”

The name itself carries deep meaning. Sofia Elaine combines two middle names— one belonging to Erica and the other to her mother—woven together as a tribute to their unbreakable bond. “It felt like the most beautiful way to honor the connection we share,” Erica says. “My mom has always been my biggest inspiration, and this name keeps that love and strength at the heart of everything we do.”

That spirit of resilience and gratitude flows through every chair in the salon. After years of working independently in different salons, Erica began to imagine something more—a space where stylists could create, grow, and feel supported. “I learned that hiring for character and training for skill is everything,” she says. “Talent matters, but so do drive, customer service, and teamwork. When those qualities come together, the culture thrives.”

Her team is proof of that philosophy. Each artist brings unique skill and heart to the salon, working together with a shared sense of purpose. “We focus on quality over quantity,” Erica explains. “In the early days, our small team worked long hours to build a solid foundation. Now, if one artist gets sick or has a family emergency, the rest of the team steps in without hesitation. That’s what family does.” Clients can feel that loyalty and warmth the moment they sit down. The laughter is genuine, the energy contagious, and the service personal in every way.

The same thoughtful care extends to their guests. Sofia Elaine Salon was recently recognized as a L’Oréal Black Elite Salon, the highest distinction within the brand’s network. They carry L’Oréal’s Serie Expert line, Pureology, and Mizani—products chosen with intention and integrity. “Pureology is vegan, cruelty-free, and free of parabens and sulfates,” Erica notes. “Serie Expert was developed by scientists in Paris and gives our clients those healthy, plump strands everyone wants. Our Pro Longer line, in particular, is a favorite because it strengthens hair from the inside out.”

Clients also love the salon’s signature blowouts, complete with Velcro rollers to lock in volume and body. Their new Wellness and Beauty Menu elevates the experience even further, offering luxurious scalp and hair treatments that blend self-care with artistry. “We want guests to see that beautiful hair starts with a healthy foundation,” Erica says. “It’s about creating a moment for yourself, slowing down, and walking out feeling renewed.”

Education remains at the heart of everything they do. As a L’Oréal Black Elite Salon, Sofia Elaine regularly hosts world-renowned educators who teach advanced techniques in color, cutting, and styling. “We’re always evolving,” Erica says. “We invest in our team’s education, cover travel for workshops across

the country, and mentor our interns so they feel prepared and confident when they move to the floor. Growth never stops here.”

The salon’s impact reaches beyond its walls. Sofia Elaine Salon sponsors local baseball, cheer, and lacrosse teams, along with school organizations throughout the community. They also partner with charities close to their hearts, donating to events through the Trophy Club Ladies Golf Association and supporting Ally’s Wish, a nonprofit creating memories for women battling terminal cancer. “Giving back is part of who we are,” Erica says. “Our clients are our neighbors and friends, so when they give to the community, we give right alongside them.”

As the holiday season approaches, the salon’s warmth feels even more special. Guests arrive with gift bags, laughter, and the happy hum of the season. “It’s a beautiful time of year,” Erica smiles. “We help people feel confident for their celebrations, but more than that, we get to share in their joy. It reminds us why we love what we do.”

Looking ahead, Sofia Elaine Salon is preparing to celebrate its fifth anniversary in February 2026, and the team shows no signs of slowing down. Erica plans to send several stylists to the L’Oréal Artist Academy on both coasts for advanced training and continue building her team of rising artists. “We’ve built something really special here,” she says softly. “Our clients can feel it when they walk in, and our team feels it every day.”

Because at Sofia Elaine Salon, beauty isn’t just what you see in the mirror—it’s the feeling you carry long after you leave.

MOVE, SMILE, repeat

THE HEARTBEAT OF JAZZERCISE SOUTHLAKE
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BROWN-THOMAS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA FARRIS

If you walk into Jazzercise Southlake, you feel it before you even step onto the dance floor. Music fills the room, laughter bounces off the walls, and the energy is contagious. It’s not just a workout: it’s a celebration. A celebration of you, being you. Exactly who you are, no restrictions and no requirements. Just a place you can unwind and be yourself. At the heart of it all is owner Taniqua “Tani” Richards, whose warmth and positivity have transformed the studio into a space where confidence, connection, and community move together in rhythm.

“Our vibe, our team, the energy we bring to every class is unmatched,” Tani says with a smile. “And we can’t forget free childcare. Not many studios offer that. Parents can focus on themselves for an hour knowing their kids are close and cared for.”

That sense of welcome has become the heartbeat of Jazzercise Southlake. It’s more than a fitness studio; it’s a family. As the holidays wind down and the new year begins, it’s the perfect reminder that self-care doesn’t need to wait for a resolution. It starts right now—with joy, movement, and community. Every class becomes a chance to reset, refocus, and rediscover how strong you already are.

Jazzercise may be the original dance fitness program, but inside Tani’s studio it feels brand new: fresh, modern, and full of life. Each class blends dance, strength training, yoga, Pilates, and kickboxing into what she calls “your hour of power.” “It’s never boring,” she laughs. “You forget you’re working out because you’re grooving to your favorite songs and letting go of the day.”

Tani’s story mirrors the women she now inspires. “I found Jazzercise because I was bored with my old workout,” she recalls. “Then I met Adrienne Menichini, the ‘Queen of Sass’ and former owner. She showed me how powerful it is to lead with joy, and I’ve carried that forward ever since.”

Today, Tani leads a team of women who share that same spark: moms, teachers, students, and professionals who pour their hearts into every class. “We love what we do, and our members can feel that,” she says. “There’s no judgment, no competition, just encouragement and laughter.” The energy between instructor and member is what makes each class feel like a reunion of friends rather than a workout.

After more than five decades of Jazzercise history, the brand continues to evolve, and so does the Southlake studio. New programs like Vital Sculpt HIIT and Elevate keep things fresh. “Vital Sculpt HIIT blends sculpting, cardio, and functional movement for strength and hormone health,” Tani explains. “Elevate focuses on posture and form to help you move better and feel stronger.”

Giving back is also part of the rhythm. Jazzercise Southlake partners with Meals on Wheels, Kindness Moves, and The Gifting Project, and honors breast cancer survivors each October during its annual Pink Out class. They support local schools, cheer programs, and community events like Art in the Square and Oktoberfest. “We’re always looking for ways to give back,” Tani says.

“Our vibe, our team, the energy we bring to every class is unmatched.”
— Tani Richards, Owner

The physical benefits are obvious—stronger muscles, better endurance—but the deeper impact happens in spirit. “You walk out feeling lighter,” Tani says. “It’s not just about calories or reps. It’s about confidence, joy, and the reminder that you can do hard things and have fun doing them.”

“Movement changes people, it builds happiness, confidence, and kindness that spread far beyond these walls.”

As the new year unfolds, Tani’s hope is simple: to keep growing this community, welcoming new faces, and inspiring every person who walks through the door.

Because at Jazzercise Southlake, fitness isn’t about perfection or comparison—it’s about joy, friendship, and the freedom to show up exactly as you are.

You don’t have to be a dancer to belong here. You just have to be ready to move, smile, and rediscover how good it feels to find your rhythm again.
