Gratitude as a Way of Living
November always invites us to pause and reflect on what we’re grateful for. Gratitude has a way of shifting how we see the world, suddenly the little things don’t feel so little, and even the challenges reveal themselves as steppingstones that brought us exactly where we’re meant to be.
I’ve come to believe that there’s no such thing as a wrong turn. Every choice, even the ones we second-guess, has shaped us into who we are today. Gratitude allows us to look back without regret and forward with hope.
This month, I am thankful for this community—for the people, the businesses, and the nonprofits who open their doors and their hearts to share their stories with us. I am thankful to our readers who welcome us into their homes each month and remind us why we do what we do. And I am thankful for our team of writers, photographers, and creatives who pour their talents into every page.
My hope is that as you read this issue, you’ll feel inspired to notice the gifts in your own journey—big and small. Gratitude isn’t just a season; it’s a way of life.

Gratitude
Isn’t just for NovemberIt’s a Way of Being
What if gratitude wasn’t something you remembered once a year, but the power you lived from every day?
True gratitude is not about forcing yourself to “look on the bright side.” It’s about stepping out of circumstances and into a way of being.
When you live as gratitude, stress no longer rules your day. Challenges don’t drain your energy, and the holidays become more than obligations - they become moments of pure peace, joy, and celebration.
This November, go beyond the habit of gratitude into the power of gratitude.

Former NFL linebacker Dhani Jones and longtime journalist Jennifer Birn joined forces to create Chasing Sunsets Down I-80, a debut novel weaving modern love and grief with postwar history. The story follows Sarah Emma, a publicist who discovers hidden truths about her family following her mother’s death, including that her grandparents were Holocaust survivors who rebuilt their lives in America. Told in dual timelines, the novel explores survival, love, and generational ties. It’s available as a thoughtful gift from major retailers.

LIVING GR ATEFULLY
Gratitude is one of those words we hear often, but when you stop and really feel it—it can change everything. Gratitude isn’t just about polite thank-yous when someone opens a door. It’s a lens that shifts the way we see our lives. It softens the hard edges, brings light into dark places, and reminds us that even when life feels messy, there is still something good. And science agrees. Gratitude doesn’t just feel good in the moment, it changes the way our brains, our relationships, and even our bodies work.
GRATITUDE AND THE BRAIN
Every morning, I sit with my journal. I write about the day I want to create. At night, I come back to it and write the miracles that unfolded. Sometimes they’re big, and others they’re “small”—an unexpected phone call, a smile, a quiet moment of peace. Over time, I’ve noticed how this practice trains my mind to search for good, not problems.
What science knows, what the heart feels
ARTICLE BY CAMILLA SOLÉA RAE, PHD
Neuroscientists call this neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to rewire itself. When we focus on gratitude, the brain releases dopamine and serotonin, those natural “feelgood” chemicals. And when we practice consistently, we strengthen the parts of the brain that regulate emotions and decision-making. Gratitude makes it easier to lean toward optimism rather than negativity.
GRATITUDE AND MENTAL HEALTH
Life has a way of giving us detours we never asked for. It’s easy to get stuck by replaying mistakes or focusing on what’s missing. Gratitude breaks that cycle. We start replacing the word “mistake” with “experience.”
Studies show that people who practice gratitude regularly experience lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. One study found that writing gratitude letters created benefits that lasted for weeks, even months.
I’ve lived this truth. Looking back on difficult seasons, gratitude helped me see that even in pain, there were gifts: strengths I didn’t know I had, clarity about what mattered, or the courage to move forward.
GRATITUDE AND RELATIONSHIPS
Gratitude doesn’t just change how we feel, it changes how we connect. Think about how it feels when someone genuinely appreciates you. You feel lighter, stronger, more open.
Research shows that couples who thank each other regularly are more satisfied in their relationships. Families who share what they’re thankful for feel closer. Teams that practice gratitude work better together. Gratitude is contagious, it creates a cycle of generosity and kindness.
GRATITUDE AND PHYSICAL HEALTH
Here’s the surprising part: gratitude doesn’t just lift our mood; it impacts our health. People who practice gratitude sleep better, have lower blood pressure, and even report fewer aches and pains. Gratitude lowers cortisol, the stress hormone that can weaken the immune system and increase inflammation. Less stress equals better health.

In a way, gratitude is medicine we can give ourselves. It doesn’t cost anything, and the return is immeasurable.
SIMPLE WAYS TO PRACTICE GRATITUDE
Gratitude isn’t complicated. It’s built from small moments. Here are a few simple ways to begin:
• Morning Creation + Miracles – Write the day you want to create in the morning and return at night to write the miracles that happened. This shifts your focus to what’s possible and reminds you how much there is to appreciate.
• Say It Out Loud – Don’t just think it. Tell someone. A text, a note, or a heartfelt thankyou can brighten both your day and theirs.
• Pause and Notice – Take a breath and notice one thing you’re grateful for in the moment— the sunshine, laughter, or simply being alive.
• Reframe Challenges – Instead of “Why is this happening?” try, “What could this be teaching me?” Gratitude doesn’t erase hardship; it helps us find meaning in it.
LIVING WITH GRATITUDE
Gratitude isn’t a season—it’s a way of life. It doesn’t mean denying struggle. It means noticing the blessings within it. It means recognizing that perfection isn’t required for joy.
Science confirms what our hearts already know: gratitude makes life richer, deeper, and more connected. It changes our brain, strengthens our health, and deepens our relationships.
So, this November, I invite you to ask yourself: What is one thing I can be thankful for today? Write it down. Say it out loud. Let it shift the way you see your world.
Because when you choose gratitude, you don’t just change your day—you change your life.

EXPANDING EXCELLENCE in education
CAPSTONE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY GRATEFUL TO LEAD IN EDUCATION QUALITY
ARTICLE BY DEMI GUILLORY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAPSTONE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY
It was five years ago that Capstone Christian Academy began serving the students and families of the Las Vegas area. Since then, the number of advancements in its curriculum have surpassed the school’s years of service and have quickly made Capstone a leader in education.
Principal Tracy Williams has been at the school since its opening and has witnessed each success with great pride for the commitment and dedication to exceptional education that sets Capstone apart from other private Christian institutions. With nearly 200 students enrolled in preschool through sixth grade classes today, the growth is a tangible marker of the school’s acceleration in academics.
By adding “one grade level each year,” Tracy said that Capstone is making good on its promise and original vision to provide the very best in education for students from preschool to 12th grade. “We are fortunate to already own a large piece of land very close to our current campus, which will allow us to expand thoughtfully.”
This expansion project, to include a middle and high school campus, is already in the works and while it aims to attract more students, the primary focus is on Capstone’s current students. “More than 90 percent of our elementary students perform at or above grade level,” said Tracy. The addition will let students continue their Capstone education and fully benefit from all the existing amenities and the exciting developments taking shape.
“We’re enriching our current programs with an expanded STEM curriculum and more opportunities in music and world languages,” Tracy shared. “Our athletic program is also growing, which is another way we’re helping students build confidence and character.” Each advancement, Tracy stresses, further supports the Capstone mission of offering the most comprehensive Christian education in Las Vegas.
Capstone embraces every part of its mission with equal dedication, but at its heart, the Christ-centered community is focused on the whole student.
“We’re steadfast in equipping them with the tools to succeed in education and beyond, shaping world-changing leaders,” Tracy said.
The latest projects, including campus expansions, reflect that vision.
“These efforts allow us to continue living out our mission— preparing graduates who are academically excellent, spiritually grounded, and ready to make an impact on the world.”
established on two acres of land five years ago. “With small class sizes, a safe and nurturing environment, and a record of strong academic achievement, we’re committed to helping students thrive.”
As the landscape is growing, Capstone is committed to maintaining the reputation that has awarded them the honor of many distinctions, including the Best Faith Based School in the Best of Las Vegas awards in 2024. The school also has several notable ties to two of the country’s top private schools, Valley Christian Schools and Valor Christian High School, who have offered support and guidance.
“Capstone prepares students ‘who are academically excellent, spiritually grounded, and ready to make an impact in the world.”
Tracy also recognizes that Capstone is special not just for what it offers but also because of its people. “I’m thankful every day for the families who trust us with their children and for the teachers who pour so much into each student.” This relationship is vital to building upon the solid foundation
Capstone Christian Academy has made a name for itself among some of the most prestigious schools across the nation. Tracy and her hardworking staff are grateful for what has been accomplished and hopeful for what is ahead.
“For families who are searching for one of the best preschools in Las Vegas or a strong elementary school where their children will be challenged and supported, Capstone is a wonderful option,” Tracy remarked. “As we prepare to expand into middle and high school, we’re excited about the future.”
FROM HOMELESS TO
SUMMA CUM LAUDE NURSE

How a nonprofit’s support and scholarship helped Alex Rankin rewrite his future
At age 18, Alexander Rankin was homeless. His drug-addicted parents had both passed away tragically, and in quick succession, leaving him to fend for himself in a world ill-equipped to meet his needs.
As he tells it, Alex was always a good student who enjoyed learning, but his neglectful and poverty-stricken upbringing kept him from fulfilling his potential. As a teenager, Alex sank into depression, haunted by negative thoughts and constant behavioral struggles at school. One day, after losing his second parent, he found what he describes as a
Alex Rankin and Denise Charles
miraculous spiritual awakening. “I basically felt like I was losing everything in my life, when I had a life-changing, personal encounter with Jesus Christ. I literally woke up the next day as a new man, with a peace in my heart I’d never felt before.”
Finding consistency and community in church, Alex made meaningful connections with peers who had gone through similar tragedies. “One of my friends [who was also homeless] told me I should check out this program. He said, ‘They give you your own apartment, they help equip you with job skills,’ and they generally support the growth of unhoused young people.”
So, one day in 2015, Alex walked into St. Jude’s Ranch for Children’s Transitional Housing facility in Las Vegas and met a woman who would forever change his life: Denise Charles, Chief Program Officer.
“When I met Alex, I thought ‘Oh My God, here’s this handsome, innocent kid, and I wanted to know what happened,” she shares. After empathizing with his traumatic backstory, setting up the rules of the facility, and reassuring Alex that none of his situation was his fault, Denise planted the seeds of what would become a long-term mentorship and parental-like bond. “He said right away, ‘I want a job. I want to work. I want to save money. I’m going to go to school, and
I want to become a nurse.’ I vividly remember he said that immediately,” she beams.
And, so, with support to make his dreams happen, the trajectory of Alex’s life began to shift. He qualified for the two-year transitional program and received wraparound services from Denise, who became his case manager and whose hands-on and consistent guidance taught him little-by-little the life skills he craved learning.
Beyond the transitional housing, a pivotal part of Alex’s journey was the educational support from St. Jude’s Ranch for Children’s Career Opportunity Scholarship Fund. This scholarship helps current and former program participants cover tuition, books, housing, and other educational expenses, empowering youth to pursue higher education and meaningful careers. Impressively, the nonprofit has contributed $65,000 toward post-secondary education for about a dozen young people in the last two years alone.
With Alex accepting the help and doing the work to break the cycle, Alex earned the scholarship, which helped sponsor his college tuition, books, and housing. After a brief shift in majors and schools, he graduated summa cum laude with a perfect GPA from the nursing program at Nevada State University.
“I told Alex when he graduated from college to call me and I would be there,” says Denise. Culminating in a full circle moment after nearly 10 years of consistent mentorship, Denise could remember Alex’s first day of college, when she traveled with him and dropped him off, like it was yesterday. “He said ‘I’m not going to let you down,’ … and he sure didn’t. With Alex, it was never a question of if he would do it. I knew he would do it. It was always a matter of what’s next for him?”
Today, Alex holds the coveted and prestigious position of nurse in the Level 1 Trauma ICU at UMC, a placement rarely offered to new graduates. In that capacity, from his personal experiences, he offers insight and compassion to those in the midst of one of their worst days. After some time living on his own, Alex now resides with loving family members and dreams of one day buying his own house, getting married, and becoming a father. Things, he said, he was never able to hope for as a kid.
“This was the most important thing that’s ever happened to me,” declares Alex. “God’s love was all around me—in St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, in Denise—and it’s given me a new life. It’s given me the ability to not be an addict like my parents, to use my mind for the betterment of others, and to love myself.”

SERVING VETERANS, SERVING COMMUNITY
As November marks Veterans and Military Families Month, Marine veteran Jesse Keenan reflects on how his time in service shaped his life and the values behind his company, Semper Fi Heating & Cooling. Built on trust, discipline, and community, his business is dedicated to supporting veterans and first responders.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START SEMPER FI HEATING & COOLING AFTER YOUR SERVICE IN THE MARINES?
As my HVAC career took off, I saw a real need for the veteran and first responder community that nobody was addressing. My goal from the beginning was to keep veterans, first responders, and their families a tight-knit community.
HOW DO YOUR VETERAN EXPERIENCES INFLUENCE THE WAY YOU RUN YOUR BUSINESS?
With the military, the company runs like a disciplined machine with high ethics, and that carries over to homeowners. We have a process and a standard of ethics when entering any house. It’s not always easy to build trust, so we do our due diligence with background checks and technician training. Our goal is to make sure we always do the right thing.
HOW DOES SEMPER FI HEATING & COOLING SUPPORT VETERANS AND MILITARY FAMILIES?
We have a standard 20 percent discount for veterans, first responders, and their families. We want to ensure they’re taken care of. We go above and beyond so no veteran goes without air conditioning or heating. Whether that means covering the cost of a part or service, we never want to leave a veteran behind or in need.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER VETERANS LOOKING TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS OR TRANSITION INTO CIVILIAN CAREERS?
Never give up. You’ll hear negativity and people saying you can’t do it. You have to
go back to that military mindset—get the job done no matter what. Some will support you, but others won’t want you to succeed. Block that out and focus on the mission. When you reach your prime in a career, you’ll look back and realize not quitting was everything. The military mindset really does carry into civilian life.
WHAT LASTING MESSAGE DO YOU HOPE TO PASS ON?
I’d encourage more young people to enter the trades because there’s a huge shortage in HVAC and plumbing. It can be a great career with strong pay, without the cost of college. As technology advances, demand for skilled trades will only grow, and these jobs can offer far more than many realize.
H O P E
Begins with YOU A SEASON TO SEE THE UNSEEN
The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?
The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.
Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.
“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”
Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:
SCAN TO NOMINATE
“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”
Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:
“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”
Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.
This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.
“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”
Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.
This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.
To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.
