Inside Clay Health's revolutionary approach to holistic care
ARTICLE BY ALISIA PULELLA
Transforming Health Journeys 14
S ELF CA R E | W EL L NES S
In today’s healthcare landscape, finding a provider focused on root causes rather than symptom management is rare. However, Clay Health and Care (clayhealthandcare.com) is redefining healthcare by combining advanced technology, proactive strategies, and a holistic wellness focus to address the full range of patient needs—from mental well-being to physical optimization. In a recent interview, CEO Joel Nelson shared how Clay Health prioritizes “healthspan” over simply extending lifespan, transforming the healthcare experience for families.
A PROACTIVE, HOLISTIC HEALTH MODEL
Unlike conventional or even concierge healthcare, Clay Health focuses on identifying the root causes of health issues while integrating often-overlooked wellness aspects. Joel shared that Clay Health was born from frustration with a reactive healthcare system that frequently waits until issues escalate. In contrast, Clay Health’s model begins with a comprehensive assessment and continues through a continuum of care that includes stabilization, mobilization, and optimization. By emphasizing lifestyle factors, Clay Health helps patients establish and maintain healthy routines. “Proactive health is greater than reactive care,” Joel emphasized.
HEALTH OPTIMIZATION INSPIRED BY HIGH PERFORMERS
Clay Health offers health optimization strategies typically reserved for high performers, including elite athletes. Their approach involves in-depth assessments such as blood work and metabolic testing, paired with personalized exercise and nutrition plans. This personalized care approach has led to measurable improvements in patients’ health, highlighted by numerous success stories showcasing the effectiveness of these protocols. “Our philosophy is that everyone should have access to the kind of healthcare support high performers receive,” Joel stated. “It’s not just about addressing today’s concerns but building a foundation for long-term health.” CONTINUED >

“Healthspan isn't just about living longer, it's about maintaining a high quality of life throughout the years you have.”
REDEFINING LONGEVITY WITH THE FIVE PILLARS OF HEALTH
A unique element of Clay Health’s philosophy is its emphasis on "healthspan"—the years spent in good health—rather than mere longevity. Clay Health’s five core pillars—brain, heart, fuel, body, and blood—form the foundation for achieving comprehensive wellness. “Healthspan isn’t just about living longer,” Joel explained. “It’s about maintaining a high quality of life throughout the years you have.” Clay Health empowers patients to build healthy habits that enhance their daily experience, increasing both lifespan and quality of life.
SPECIALIZED PROGRAMS FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH OUTCOMES
To support patients’ wellness goals, Clay Health provides a range of specialized programs, including: • Primary care • Healthy weight management • Hormone health support

Integrative chiropractic care Chronic condition support Advanced blood testing and body composition analysis Fitness assessment and one-on-one coaching
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES ON THE HEALTH JOURNEY
Joel discussed the health challenges many face today, from chronic conditions to lifestyle-induced health issues. Clay Health meets patients where they are, helping them regain control of their health with clear guidance from knowledgeable professionals. By integrating advanced technologies, Clay Health enables patients to set realistic health goals and work toward them with expert support. “Our mission is clear: to empower patients with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed health choices,” Joel shared. “Ultimately, health is the most important asset any of us have. We provide the tools, guidance, and action plans to help every individual take control of their health.”

Restoring Health and Confidence Cutting-edge treatments for varicose and spider veins focused on both aesthetic and medical benefits Las Vegas Vein Specialists is dedicated to diagnosing and treating various vein disorders in the Las Vegas area. The clinic offers advanced, minimally invasive procedures for conditions such as varicose veins, spider veins, chronic venous insufficiency, and more. “What we specialize in is all about prevention, whether you want to prevent the symptoms or the disability that comes with vein disease,” explains Dr. Mehran Moussavian, CEO of Las Vegas Vein Specialists. With a focus on both medical and cosmetic outcomes, Las Vegas Vein Specialists aims to help patients improve circulation, alleviate discomfort, and enhance the appearance of their legs and other affected areas. “When you have spider veins, you are less likely to appreciate your legs or be happy with the way they look,” said Dr. Moussavian. “We want to restore how your legs looked and felt before symptoms began." Las Vegas Vein Specialists specializes in advanced vein treatments that deliver extraordinary results. Vein diseases occur when the veins, responsible for returning blood to the heart, become weakened or damaged. In certain patients with specific

risk factors, blood can pool in the veins, leading to swelling, discomfort, and other symptoms, particularly in the legs. Their focus is on providing high-quality care to address these conditions, improving circulation, and alleviating the symptoms associated with venous insufficiency. One of the most common symptoms of vein disease is experiencing cramps or a feeling of heaviness in the legs. Another significant sign is swelling, especially around the ankle, at the end of the day. “This swelling is often one of the earliest and most noticeable indicators of vein issues, yet it is frequently overlooked. If left untreated, this symptom can progress, leading to more serious complications over time,” said Dr. Moussavian. Las Vegas Vein Specialists utilizes state-of-the-art technology and the latest techniques, including endovenous laser therapy

(EVLT), phlebectomy, sclerotherapy, and topical laser treatments. These procedures are designed to target damaged veins, reducing discomfort and improving blood flow with minimal recovery time. EVLT, for instance, uses laser energy to close off faulty veins, while sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution into the veins that causes them to collapse and fade over time. These treatments are especially popular for patients looking to address both the functional and cosmetic concerns, while also preventing more serious complications. What sets Las Vegas Vein Specialists apart is their patient-centered approach. They emphasize patient education, offering consultations to assess symptoms and explain the best treatment options. They work closely
with patients to create personalized care plans, considering factors such as medical history, lifestyle, and overall health. Maintaining healthy legs is a lifestyle choice that involves regular exercise, a healthy weight, and avoiding smoking. Additionally, factors such as family history and multiple pregnancies can increase the risk of developing vein disease, with women being more likely to experience these issues than men. Taking steps to care for your legs not only supports better health but also enhances confidence. Whether treating varicose veins or spider veins, Las Vegas Vein Specialists is dedicated to helping patients regain their sense of self-assurance and improve their overall well-being.

The Rhythm of Wellness HOW G. ERIC MILES USES DRUMMING TO PROMOTE WELLNESS
When you look at G. Eric Miles—his beaming ear-to-ear smile, his glowing skin, his lean and muscular physique—you would probably guess he’s around 40 years old. “I’m 67,” he tells me while laughing during a recent chat, “But I feel like I can do anything I used to do in my 30s.” And with his serene and yet energetic presence, there’s no reason to doubt that assertion. As an author, a poet, a musician, a business owner, a teacher, a husband, a yogi, and more, one wonders how he has the time for such a full life. “I don’t even think about time in that way anymore,” he shares. “I have a whole different relationship with time now.” It’s interesting to talk to Eric about health, but end up in a conversation about time. Yet with his positive outlook, healthy body, fulfilling career, and loving spirit, one does become curious about the connection. As a young child growing up in Washington, D.C. during the tumultuous civil rights era, Eric’s early education focused not on his well-being, but rather his safety. “I was taught not to show any emotions,” he recalls, and for a highly emotional person as he, that began to take a toll on his mental and physical wellness. Then, as a young adult he began singing at a local church and noticed a transformation:

A once dying institution was suddenly turning into a viable, celebratory place, all because of the choir. “That was the first time I realized how music affected people’s moods, attitudes, and state of mind.” Though a seed had been planted, Eric kept on with his old habits and his health continued to spiral downward. More than 20 years later he found himself middle-aged, overweight, and in the emergency room being treated for a virus. “That was a pivotal moment for me,” he remembers. A door opened which introduced Eric to yoga, meditation, and better nutrition. “Someone once told me: You get fit in the gym, but you get healthy in the kitchen.” And so, Eric began watching what he ate, cutting out meat, and engaging in regular yoga and meditation. Things began to shift, and Eric became very interested in the mind/body connection. Recalling his musical roots, he started working with a music therapist who treated children in the foster system. He became quickly convinced that music offered a deeper level of healing than any fitness modality could ever achieve. It wasn’t until Eric was 54 years old that he attended his first drum circle, and it all came together. “From the very first time I sat down behind a drum I knew it was something I would be doing for the rest of my life.” The seed planted in adolescence had finally sprouted, and Eric immediately immersed himself in the study of music therapy, vibrational healing, and the history of drumming. Drum circles date back thousands of years to various cultures across the globe, with roots deeply embedded in African tribal gatherings, Native American ceremonies, and other indigenous practices. “Every civilization that has ever existed has had some form of a drum,” Eric says. “That’s not a coincidence.” CONTINUED >
“The drum simulates and stimulates what keeps us alive. It is the pulse of the universe. That’s why the drum resonates with everyone.” JANUARY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/S O UT HV E GAS

“Try the Paradiddle: To stimulate the non-dominant side of your brain, and balance your mindset, tap a drum or hard surface in this cadence: Right, Left, Right, Right - Left, Right, Left, Left. Repeat for 5-minutes, twice per day for 30-days straight, and feel the magic.”
Indigenous peoples have, and still do, widely utilize drums in sacred ceremonies, viewing the drumbeat as a representation of the heartbeat. “The reason music affects us the way it does, is because the drum simulates and stimulates what keeps us alive. That’s why the drum resonates with everyone.” Drumming has reverberated—pun intended—into all areas of Eric’s life, creating a new sense of time (or a new beat) that he follows faithfully in each moment. It’s a rhythm that feeds his overall health and wellbeing, and that he’s committed to sharing with the world. Nowadays, G. Eric Miles facilitates weekly drum circles for United Healthcare, where he touts their therapeutic benefits: stress relief, connection, and even neurological rehabilitation. “One of my motivations is I want to help mankind evolve,” states Eric. “And this is a way to do that.” You can find a circle and learn more about his practice at miles2go.vegas.

MAJOR DONORS MAKE GROUNDBREAKING PROJECT POSSIBLE The nation's first purpose-built campus for child victims of sex trafficking opened its doors in Southern Nevada, marking a significant milestone in child advocacy. This groundbreaking $25 million Healing Center at St. Jude's Ranch for Children was made possible by the generous contributions of major donors, demonstrating the power of community support in addressing critical social issues. One of the most notable contributors was Gard Jameson, who sponsored a residential home for $1 million. Gard, Founder of CompassionateLV.org, explained the motivation behind his donation: "When my wife, Dr. Florence Jameson, delivers a baby as an OB she always declares the divine sanctity of that child, and so our contribution to St. Jude's Ranch for Children's Healing Center to build The Casa de Compassion was for two reasons: 1) to declare the infinite value of every person who enters the front door of The Healing Center, and 2) to declare that more than ever our world needs the healing balm of Compassion.”

The Healing Center represents a transformative approach to supporting young survivors of sex trafficking. Located on 10 acres and sitting above Lake Mead in Boulder City, the campus features six single-story homes, each designed to accommodate four to six residents. The center can house up to 62 individuals at full capacity, providing a safe and nurturing environment for healing.
This innovative facility goes beyond traditional care models by offering a comprehensive range of services. It includes survivor advocates, therapy offices, a multi-purpose building, and outdoor spaces that promote healing through nature connection. The center is staffed 24/7 by trained professionals who provide specialized care and support.
A unique feature of the Healing Center is its on-site public school, the first of its kind dedicated to young trafficking survivors. This Clark County School District school offers a tailored educational approach with flexible learning options and integrated social-emotional support, addressing the specific needs of its students.
The Healing Center's opening marks a significant shift from traditional practices, offering a compassionate alternative to juvenile detention for underage trafficking victims. By partnering with law enforcement, child protective services, and legal advocates, the center aims to break the cycle of trauma and incarceration, providing a path to recovery and hope for some of society's most vulnerable youth. stjudesranch.org/healing-center

Nutrient-Rich Dessert To The Rescue ARTICLE BY MEL BOBAN
SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.
This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious. Combine: • 1 cup wheat flour • 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled • 2 cups oats • 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts

1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 tablespoons chia seeds 2/3 cup raisins Optional: chocolate chips as desired Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.
Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa. Add this mixture slowly to combine: • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter • 1/2 cup honey • 1 banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.

I met Rachel Milford to chat about her passion for holistic wellness and how it’s transforming lives and workplaces. Originally from Sydney, Rachel moved to Las Vegas 16 years ago with her husband and fell in love with the desert’s calm beauty and the vibrancy of the Strip. “Before the pandemic, I was running my own event business, working with clients worldwide,” Rachel shared. “Then everything came to a halt in 2020, forcing me to reflect on my life. After climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, I felt inspired to do more,” she said. “That’s when I teamed up with my friend Megan Wilson, a mindset coach, yoga instructor, and meditation facilitator. Over coffee one afternoon, Pneuma Lab (pneumalab.com) was born.” Pneuma means the vital spirit, soul, or creative force of a person. Pneuma Lab combines Rachel’s event expertise with Megan’s mindfulness programs. “Our services cater to corporate teams, professionals, and event organizers who value holistic well-being,” Rachel explained. “By fine-tuning dimensions of wellness, people achieve greater focus, clarity, and stronger communication.” Rachel emphasized the importance of shifting priorities within the event industry. “We’re still so focused on strategic outcomes that we often overlook the well-being of attendees,” she said. “When we change that perspective, not only do we see improved bottom-line results, but the purpose and engagement of participants increase exponentially. Wellness isn’t just an add-on—it’s the foundation for meaningful connections and lasting impact.” Their offerings include workplace wellness programs, wellness pep rallies, and interactive activities. Harmony Oasis is a multimedia art installation that helps participants find balance and calm in a busy office or conference. Rachel said, “We brought this to IMEX America last year as the Las Vegas Convention
& Visitors Authority’s wellness partner, and the feedback was incredible.” Another standout is Activate Your Anthem, which is the cornerstone of their coaching and workshops. “The impact is transformative,” Rachel shared. “One senior sales executive told us, ‘I had three accounts that felt stuck, and I was skeptical. By the second week, two of my accounts were ready to renew their contracts.’” Megan has taken over 250 people through this program, helping individuals and teams achieve breakthroughs in both their personal and professional lives. When asked how leaders can support employees’ well-being, Rachel shared actionable advice: “Start with a wellness audit to identify gaps across all the wellness dimensions—physical, spiritual, intellectual, emotional, social, environmental, and occupational. Then take meaningful steps to bridge the gaps, which can be as simple as creating green spaces in your office to an in-depth realignment of your company’s values and those of your employees.” Rachel is also excited about their Las Vegasinspired essential oil collection. “We created six blends: Neon, Star, Mirage, Mojave, Silver, and Pulse,” she said. “Scent is powerful and directly tied to memory and emotion. A well-chosen scent can energize a team, calm a workplace, or anchor positive memories from an event. When was the last time you associated an aroma other than coffee with your work? We’re changing that!” As our conversation ended, Rachel reflected on holistic wellness. “At Pneuma Lab, we shift your mindset from fear to curiosity inspiring optimism for the future with our motto: What’s the Best That Can Happen?! You might be surprised how much life transforms when you align mind, body, and soul.”

Hibiscus Ginger Refresher ARTICLE BY EVE BUSHMAN AND ASHLEY NORRIS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY NORRIS
A healthy non-alcoholic drink for the New Year
Ashley Norris, known as SipWithMe_ LV on Instagram, shares a refreshing mocktail for a health-conscious January. The Hibiscus Ginger Refresher is rich in antioxidants and combines the benefits of hibiscus, pomegranate, and ginger to kickstart your new year healthily. Hibiscus offers anti-inflammatory properties, lowers blood pressure, and supports weight loss. Pomegranate is anti-inflammatory and high in fiber, benefiting digestion. Ginger aids digestion and alleviates joint pain, while lemons are rich in vitamin C and promotes heart health. Finally, agave acts as a natural sweetener with its own anti-inflammatory effects, making this mocktail a nutritious choice.
ingredients: • 4 oz. chilled brewed Yogi Spicy Hibiscus Blossom Tea • 1/2 oz. agave syrup • 3/4 oz. fresh squeezed lemon juice • 3 oz. Fever Tree Ginger Beer
directions: Step 1. Fill a glass with ice. Step 2. Add hibiscus tea, agave syrup, and lemon juice. Step 3. Top with ginger beer, stir. Step 4. Garnish with pomegranate arils (fleshy part of pomegranate seeds), lemon wheel, mint, and crystallized ginger.
