Capstone Christian Academy, a private elementary school in Southwest Las Vegas, is adding a 5th grade class this fall after graduating a record number of students in May. Best Floors for Kids and Pets

Discover durable, easy-to-clean, and stylish flooring that can withstand the wear and tear of active households

Kids and pets bring joy, laughter, and a fair share of chaos into our homes. From muddy paws to spilled juice, the floors in a family home endure a lot. As any parent or pet owner knows, choosing the right flooring is crucial to maintaining a beautiful and functional living space. Michael Boulant, owner of Affordable Flooring & More, shares expert insights on the best flooring options for homes with children and pets. "Kids and pets can be rough on floors," says Michael Boulant. "From the constant running and playing to the inevitable spills and accidents, your flooring needs to be durable and easy to clean."

CARPET: SOFT AND SLIP-RESISTANT

Carpet is a popular choice for families due to its softness and slip-resistant properties. It provides a cushioned surface for kids to play on and is less likely to cause injuries from falls. However, carpet can be challenging to maintain, especially with pets. Michael suggests considering carpets with antimicrobial padding to prevent mold and odors from spills and accidents. "Upgrading to a carpet padding with antimicrobial properties can make a significant difference in maintaining a clean and odor-free home," he advises.

LAMINATE: AFFORDABLE AND EASY TO CLEAN

Laminate flooring is an excellent option for high-traffic areas and rooms with kids

or pets. It is affordable, easy to clean, and can mimic the look of more expensive flooring options. "Waterproof laminate floors, like Mohawk’s RevWood line, offer enhanced traction and slip-resistance, making them a great choice for families," says Michael. Laminate is also resistant to scratches and stains, making it a practical choice for busy households.

LUXURY VINYL PLANK: DURABLE AND STYLISH

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is a top choice for families with pets. It is durable, waterproof, and easy to clean, making it ideal for handling spills and pet accidents. "Mohawk’s PureTech line of LVP is not only environmentally friendly but also incredibly durable and scratch-resistant," Michael explains. "It's one of the few products that offer a scratch resistance warranty, which is a huge plus for pet owners."

TILE:

DURABLE AND EASY TO MAINTAIN

Tile flooring is another durable option that can withstand the wear and tear of kids and pets. It is easy to clean and comes in various styles and colors. However, tile can be slippery, so it's essential to choose textured tiles or use non-slip mats to prevent accidents. "Tile is perfect for areas prone to spills, like kitchens and bathrooms, as it can be easily wiped clean," Michael notes.

Choosing the right flooring for a home with kids and pets involves balancing durability, ease of maintenance, and style. Michael emphasizes the importance of considering all these factors when making a decision. "At Affordable Flooring & More, we pride ourselves on helping families find the perfect flooring solutions for their needs," he says. "Whether you're looking for carpet, laminate, luxury vinyl plank, or tile, we have options that will stand up to the demands of an active household."

For those in the market for new flooring, Michael encourages visiting Affordable Flooring & More before heading to big box stores. "You'd be surprised by how much money you'll save and how much better the overall experience will be," he assures. "Our team is ready to help you choose the perfect flooring for your needs, and our installers will ensure that the installation is executed flawlessly."

RESCUING ONE PAW AT A TIME

With their sunny dispositions and heart-melting smiles, golden retrievers have long been cherished as one of humanity's most beloved four-legged friends. Known for their intelligence, loyalty, and gentle nature, these golden-coated charmers have an uncanny ability to brighten even the gloomiest of days. Their unconditional devotion and playful spirit make them not only pets, but also true family members, bringing joy and love to countless homes worldwide.

Locally, the Golden Retriever Rescue Southern Nevada (GRRSN) has been dedicated to providing a sanctuary for displaced golden retrievers since 2003. More than two decades

later, the commitment of many volunteers and board members has remained steadfast. And, considering the organization is operated solely by volunteers, every donation received by GRRSN is directed toward the care of the dogs they rescue.

GRRSN's dedication extends beyond purebred goldens to include golden mixes and other dogs with the signature golden personality. Regardless of medical or behavioral challenges, the rescue organization has never turned away a golden in need.

Each golden receives the ultimate care, from seniors requiring specialized attention to dogs with storm phobias

One non-profit’s lifelong commitment to golden retrievers

that have relocated from the Midwest. Its Forever Foster Program ensures that lifelong care for dogs with chronic health issues is funded by the non-profit organization. Despite escalating veterinary costs, with an annual expenditure averaging $70K, GRRSN persists, seeking grants and community support. Pre-pandemic fundraising events were crucial for GRRSN's financial stability and community outreach, but their future remains uncertain as many events have not returned.

WHY ADOPT INSTEAD OF SHOP?

Rescue dogs, often from breeders, offer a second chance at companionship. While the allure of a puppy is strong, the commitment may deter some. Rescue dogs, though not without quirks that all dogs have, bring joy and loyalty to their forever homes.

3. Pet Sit: Consider becoming a pet sitter. Proceeds from your service will support the rescue organization.

Keeping Kids Smiling

Gentle children's dentistry

A child's smile is one of the purest joys in life and maintaining that smile through proper dental care is essential. From the first tooth to the teenage years, ensuring children have a positive experience at the dentist can set the foundation for a lifetime of good oral health. In Las Vegas, one dental practice stands out for its dedication to making dental visits a pleasant experience for children: Silver Creek Family Dental.

Founded in 2003 by Dr. Rick Hargrave, Silver Creek Family Dental has provided comprehensive dental care for families. Dr. Hargrave, who has been practicing since 1991, brings a wealth of experience and a personal touch to his practice. "I started with my father at his practice and then opened my own practice 21 years ago. I love helping patients achieve the best smile possible and feel good about themselves," says Dr. Hargrave.

At Silver Creek Family Dental, the focus on children's dentistry is evident, offering a range of services tailored specifically for young patients, including cleanings, exams, and sealants. They welcome children as young as three years old, aiming to instill good dental habits from an early age. "We love to get them excited about taking care of their teeth," Dr. Hargrave explains. Creating a comfortable and welcoming environment for children is a top priority at Silver Creek Family Dental. The staff is known for their gentle approach, taking the time to go slow with children who may be anxious or scared. "If they are scared, we don’t push them. We say okay and try again in six months," Dr. Hargrave notes. This patient and understanding approach helps build trust and reduces fear, making future visits more manageable.

The office itself is designed with children in mind. The waiting room features children's books to keep young patients entertained, and after their appointment, children can look forward to a visit to the toy machine. Additionally, each child receives a new toothbrush and toothpaste, reinforcing the importance of dental hygiene at home.

For families in Las Vegas, Silver Creek Family Dental offers more than just dental services; they provide a caring and supportive environment where children can learn to love taking care of their teeth. With a dedicated team and a gentle approach, Dr. Hargrave and his staff are helping to keep kids smiling, one visit at a time.

Whether your pup has the obedience of a dog show finalist, or social behavior that makes you want to play dead around others, you can develop more owner confidence with help from this expert trainer.

DOG

SOCIALIZING TIPS:

“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”

Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.

• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it , but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99 percent working on small steps as part of a larger plan.

• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm—those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.

• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.

• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.
