LIFESTYLE LETTER
“Play is a state of mind it’s a way to approach the world.” - Charlie Hoehn Health & Wellness — what does it mean? It’s a pretty broad swath of content opportunity for this month’s issue. As I prepared this letter to you, I did a variety of research into motivational quotes (if you haven’t noticed, I’m a big quote guy) for health, wellness, the new year, etc. What I found is that it’s all extremely personal. For me, I’ve turned to the concept of play. For the past few years, myself and a few high school buddies, along with our young daughters, have ventured to Moab, Utah, for an extended weekend. This Dad-Daughter trip is a great time for us to bond with our daughters. It started with the girls in child carrier packs while we were stopped by numerous other outdoor enthusiasts to take photos of us as we bound through national parks. But it has turned into much more than that. It has kept our long-distance friendship strong and helped each of us through our discussions of what is happening in the world, manhood, fatherhood, religion, cryptocurrency… you name it. Many of the trips included my friend Charlie Hoehn, author of Play it Away: A Workaholics Cure for Anxiety. Charlie’s book has had a strong impact on my life. In fact, I’ve read it multiple times. The overall theme struck a chord with me, and I’ve come to realize that 1. Life is short. 2. Our health is the most important thing. 3. Mental health is an extreme component of overall health. And 4. Everything can be resolved with the concept of play. So, this new year, make a choice. Choose your healthy and what that means to you. Choose to smile. Choose to play.

They say laughter is the best medicine. So, if you are looking to heal your soul or just enjoy life a little more in 2023, look no further than right down the street. Valley residents often forget how lucky they are to have nationally acclaimed performers right in their backyard. He believes that “Laughter truly is the best medicine. People who laugh a lot have better relationships and live longer and healthier lives. So, I’m prescribing 10 to 20 laughs a day. Now get out there and start laughing!” You can get started laughing at Terry’s show, “Terry Fator: Who’s the Dummy Now?” featuring new songs by more than a dozen iconic singers. The show takes Fator and his audience on a whimsical journey of discovery as we learn how and why the world-renowned ventriloquist created many of his beloved cast of puppets. Each reflects a different part of his life, personality, and the people he’s met along the way. Fator is joined onstage by a cast of characters: Winston, the Impersonating Turtle; Maynard Tompkins, the Elvis impersonator; Duggie Scott Walker, the annoying neighbor; legendary country singer and ladies’ man, Walter T. Airdale; crooning soul singer Julius; and many others. terryfator.com

Silver Creek Family Dental isn’t hyperbole—it really is a family affair. Dr. Rick Hargrave is a second-generation dentist. Starting in 1965, his father also practiced in Las Vegas for almost 40 years. For the senior Dr. Hargrave, dental school seemed like the perfect avenue to earn a good living while also allowing for plenty of time to golf. After all, he noticed that doctors would get paged and have to leave the golf course to go see patients. Dentists wouldn’t have that problem. Of course, by the time he finished school, he fell in love with the practice. For Rick, it was only natural to follow in his footsteps. He even attended the same dental school as his father at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. After graduating, he returned home to work beside his dad. When he flew the coop, it was to start his own practice near Southern Highlands. That practice, Silver
Creek Family Dentistry, will be celebrating its 20th-anniversary next summer. Hargrave considers his business to be an “old school” family practice. And by that, he means: he grew up in the area, as did his mother, and he’s the only dentist in the practice. His name is on the building: Rick D. Hargrave. Employee retention certainly isn’t a problem for Silver Creek Family Dental. The numbers speak for themselves. Danielle, their office manager, has been with them since their inception. One of his hygienists, Roberta, has been with the practice for almost 17 years. Rafa, one of his lead assistants, has worked alongside him now for 25 years; she even practiced alongside him and his father at their former practice. Emily started with them six years ago, while Erica’s been there for 11 years, respectively. He rattles these details off without pausing to think about it.
When you’ve been seeing the same practitioners and hygienists for a long time, they notice when something goes awry: they know you. “Patients like seeing our faces,” he explains. “It’s like a family. And that’s how we treat people. We’re very big on their health history. Not just their oral health, but their overall health, and how it’s entwined.” For many of Dr. Hargrave’s younger patients, he’s been seeing them since their first checkup as toddlers. “From the very first visit, we take a photograph of them and put it in their chart,” Hargrave explains. When they get to be teenagers, he’ll show patients that picture from their first visit. “They get a kick out of seeing how much they’ve grown up. We’ve been a part of their lives [since then].” For Dr. Hargrave, some of the most meaningful patient stories come from his cosmetic dentistry cases. Many patients

looking for veneers have learned to mask their smiles and hide their teeth behind their lips while they speak for most of their lives. After they are finished at Silver Creek Family Dental, smiling becomes second nature. “It’s extremely emotional,” Hargrave elaborates. “It’s life-changing.” For one patient in her 50s, improving her smile improved her confidence to such a degree that it had a profound impact on her overall health. “She felt so good about herself that she started to exercise and lost 50 pounds in the process.” It all started with her smile. Good oral health doesn’t happen by accident—it’s a habit. Above all else, Dr. Hargrave recommends consistency. For those looking to improve oral health at home, he recommends investing in a water flossing device. He explains that it can flush out debris much better than traditional floss. Incorporating this device into your routine can have a tremendous effect on preventing tooth decay. That is when used regularly. The same goes for using an electric toothbrush. For those of you that use mouthwash, he has a tip: use it before you brush your teeth, not after. “It helps bring
the plaque to the surface, and then you can brush it away.” Keeping your tongue clean, as well, is also essential. But when it comes to oral health, healthy habits extend beyond your bathroom sink. “Your diet is very important,” Hargrave asserts, as is drinking plenty of water. While it’s up to his patients to maintain their oral health habits, you’re in good hands when you walk into Silver Creek Family Dental. “We do care about each and every patient that walks through the door,” Hargrave remarks. “I get to know patients. We know about their families, about their jobs.” The longer he’s been in practice, the better he’s gotten to know many of his patients. And not only does that have an impact on how comfortable they feel under his care, but he also offers support to his patients through many difficult stages in their lives—whether that’s about the loss of their spouse or their kids leaving for college. “They share their lives,” he adds. “There’s a lot of emotional investment.” While it’s still unclear if one of his children will join the family practice down the line, Dr. Hargrave has hope. No matter what, family matters at Silver Creek Family Dental.

FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH IN 2023 Tried and true tips from an anti-aging expert “It all comes down to balance. If you fill your cup first and take care of yourself, you will be able to do the same for everyone around you.” That’s been the motto in life and work for anti-aging expert Erika Luren, who is also the founder of Parasol Aesthetics, Dermatology & Wellness. Luren said one of the biggest questions she gets is, “how do I stay young, inside and out?”
Erika Luren
“It all starts with skincare,” said Luren. “After 30, we start to have accelerated collagen and elastin breakdown. Collagen and elastin are the glue that keeps your skin tight and subtle, and while they build up in your 20s, that all changes after your 30s.” Luren recommends a skincare routine that helps slow down the aging process. She said, “using a morning sunscreen with at least 30 SPF every day is critical, along with products that contain antioxidants like Vitamin C serum or peptides. My skincare line, Parasol Dermaceuticals, offers all kinds of products to help both men and women,” continued Luren. “Being consistent is key, and also being aware of things like avoiding the sun when you can." Luren, who started her career as a nurse practitioner, said her background in dermatology allows her to provide her clients

with advice based on science. The topic of hormonal imbalance has been a hot issue for many, as newer research shows how declining levels affect skin, hair, and bones. She said this is why it's important to incorporate hormone therapy with good-quality vitamins and herbal supplements as people age. “I provide Bioidentical Prescription Hormone treatments to my clients, not synthetic ones,” said Luren. “This type of modern treatment creates a more natural form that is easily accepted and used by the body with less risk of side effects." And when it comes to Botox, Luren said don’t wait to start the “overhaul” in your 50s. “I [really] recommend my patients start doing small things a little at a time,” said Luren. “If you start slow and younger, with things like relaxing fine lines, you will look more natural as you get older.” At 43 years old, Luren is not afraid to tell people her age. She said it was through seeing changes in her body that she learned the best way to combat signs of aging. "I truly believe in beauty from the inside out," said Luren. "If you feel good, you will look good. I am living that every day."

Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types, but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant-based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing. Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of the added fiber to your diet. A plant-based diet still allows you to consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals, and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients.
You do not have to give up meat entirely, and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant-eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a flexitarian which means you occasionally eat meat, but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meat but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a vegan who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; It is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats are said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet! TIPS TO GET STARTED ON YOUR PLANT-BASED JOURNEY:
“YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GIVE UP MEAT ENTIRELY... DO WHAT IS COMFORTABLE FOR YOU SO YOU WILL STICK WITH IT.”
32
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S
1.
Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether, and it will be harder to stick to your choice in the long term. Increase consumption of plant foods you already like.
2.
Plant-based diet does not mean boring. You can create a variety of dishes including ethnic meals that are meat-free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to your vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies.
3.
Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant including the stems, and leaves. Use the leaves
from celery, radishes, beets, and carrots, and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste. 4.
Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plantbased foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A.
5.
If you do not eat any animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possibly an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low b12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin B12.
6.
A meat-free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat good, fresh quality fruits, vegetables, and grains to get the health benefits that can add years to your life.

Housing Market
Although experts believe that the mark will shift to being more favorable for buyers, mortgage rates and inflation are impacting many Americans’ decisions to buy or sell a home. But there is good news. For those who want to buy a home, there is less competition. And because inventory is still tight, sellers will still be able to sell their homes if priced right.

Market Outlook Although existing homes sales declined, tight inventory led to an increase in median sales price.
Market Outlook New home starts are still below the rate that homes were built prior to the pandemic. The projected number of single-family housing unit starts in 2023 is estimated to be over 1.2 million.
Market Outlook Since 2017, the average year-over-year increase in rent was 5.77%.

LEGGINGS 3 WA Y S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS
Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.
BRUNCH A FTER BA R R E Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. Don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.
MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing.
SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist and added fur-lined high tops to provide practical footwear.
Snag some of the key details of the outfits here!

Workout Essentials Six picks for getting a running start to 2023
One of the great things about running is that you can do it anywhere! You don’t need a gym membership – all you need is a few items and the great outdoors. Here are my top six picks to get you moving in 2023.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
1. Shoes: I’m loving the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 right now. They are great race-day shoes or up-tempo trainers. Lightweight and carbon-plated, it’s my go-to shoe for fast day! 2. Socks: Remember, cotton is rotten! You need moisture-wicking socks to keep the water away from your skin and prevent blisters. My favorite is the Swiftwick Flite XT. 3. Hats: In winter or summer, the sun can be punishing in Vegas. I keep the sun off my head and the sweat out of my eyes with the Boco Run Hat. It is lightweight and breathes well. 4. GPS Watch: If you want to get serious about training, a GPS watch is a must. The Garmin Forerunner 55 has everything you need and won’t break the bank. Track your pace, distance, speed, and heart rate. 5. Exercise Bands: Runners exist in a plane — going forward, often ignoring lateral movement. And they are notorious for weak hips. Keep your hips strong with simple Pro-Tech Athletics Resistance Band hip exercises. 6. Roll Recovery: The R8 by Roll Recovery is the perfect tool for sore legs. Its spring-loaded tension gives the perfect pressure to ease the pain and speed up your recovery.
