LIFESTYLE LETTER

Thankful

November 2023 PUBLISHER

Chad Jeffry | Chad.Jeffry@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Paige Candee | paige.candee@citylifestyle.com

At the end of August, I sadly lost my father to a battle with cancer — his fourth different type of cancer that had attacked him. And no matter the warning, I was still not prepared to lose someone so dear to me. You may have caught a few images of my dad in our June issue, as we were able to cover Kentucky’s bourbon country with my annual family boys’ trip. If any of you have lost a parent, it’s beyond heartbreaking. My father was a true rock. And while he was tough, he loved unconditionally. He was the best father I could have asked for. What is absolutely amazing is that during his super-fast decline, I went from extreme sadness to extreme gratitude. I was beyond blessed to serve my father in his last days - it is not lost on me that many do not get the same opportunity. I spent much of August with my family to help care for him. During this time, we were able to share stories from our many years together - many of them filled with the true blessings we’ve had over our lives. Ironically, as it may be, I’m writing this letter as I leave our annual City Lifestyle conference in Kansas City to plan for the upcoming year and the amazing changes our publication is making to serve you and to help our local advertising partners build their businesses. This isn’t your typical sales conference - we bring in truly emotional stories and experiences to build bridges for our community. This year was exceptionally emotional. Our speakers included the typical business educational and motivation topics, but also internal employees and family members. The latter had true stories of emotional heartbreak and trauma. However, our company is special. We harness this energy to pour back into our communities and help serve them. Tying these two vastly different things together is the common theme of this month’s issue — Thankful. I am beyond thankful that I had a loving, supporting, and giving father who supported me up until his last minutes. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve our great community with meaningful content to provide insight and value through our City Lifestyle publications. I encourage you to stop and think about what you are grateful for as well and simply slow down this season to appreciate it before it’s gone.

I T TA K E S J U S T O N E How ‘The Just One Project’ is battling food insecurity and ending generational poverty

ARTICLE BY TAYLOR SHEA WEST PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE JUST ONE PROJECT

In 2014, Brooke Neubauer founded The Just One Project after being impacted in 2009 by a special experience. “A friend and I sponsored a child for the holiday season in 2009,” said Brooke Neubauer, Founder and CEO of The Just One Project. “The impact it made went beyond just bringing pure joy to the child; it touched my heart in a way that changed me forever. It made me so aware of the need in our community, and I knew I had to do something that would encourage others to perform more acts of kindness. I wanted to make it my life’s mission to give back to my own community.” CONTINUED >

“Nelson Henderson said it best, ‘the true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit.’”

In that moment, the idea behind the non-profit organization was born — it takes “just one person” to make a difference. The Just One Project is now the largest distributor of fresh groceries direct to residents of Southern Nevada, serving more than 17,000 residents monthly in their homes or neighborhoods. They ensure that food gets into the hands of those who need it most via monthly mobile markets, farmers markets, direct delivery, and four no-cost community markets. “These signature markets resemble a neighborhood corner store and include fresh produce, pantry staples, and recipes. Staffed by The Just One Project case managers, these community markets are also a place where clients may access wraparound services such as rapid rehousing, homelessness prevention, job assistance, and more,” said Neubauer. The Just One Project also offers unique volunteer opportunities, and there is no age requirement to get involved. Children, teens, families, and corporate volunteers make up a large number of our volunteers. Programs like Volunteering Is Golden help combat senior isolation and strengthen the community through the volunteer service of adults 55 and over. Along with the community market, Pop Up & Give Mobile Market, and Delivery Driver opportunities, The Just One Project also offers youth programs. While youth programs offer volunteer opportunities, they also have a chance to learn life skills. “To address adult-sized pressures being faced by young adults, we offer Leadership Academy and Camp Just One,” said Neubauer. “Camp Just One is a weeklong program for ages six to 12 that introduces important values around civic engagement, teamwork, and leadership development. Leadership Academy is a 90-day program for young adults ages 16 to 20 who are disconnected from school or employment, focusing

on self-development, career and education development, and personal finance skills.” For adults, The Just One Project offers financial literacy classes taught by industry professionals as well as self-development classes taught by licensed clinical social workers. “We take great pride in our volunteer program and offer multiple ways for anyone and everyone to make a difference,” said Neubauer. The Just One Project has more than 850 volunteers monthly. In 2022, over 10,613 volunteers answered a call to action. “Part of our mission is to connect the community and inspire them to give back. Food insecurity and poverty do not discriminate, and these social issues often affect all walks of life,” said Neubauer. “Our volunteers are exposed to the varying clientele we serve and often leave with a new appreciation for life, their jobs, and their loved ones.” That’s the ripple effect Neubauer hopes to see continue to grow and last for many years to come. The mindset that it takes just one to make a difference is in their namesake, and they wholeheartedly stand by it. “We are making a great difference in the lives of our neighbors who are struggling,” said Neubauer. “In 2022 alone, we distributed 5,999,515 meals and served 243,795 clients. We know we could not have done it without the help of our volunteers, the heart and soul of our organization.” The Just One Project is always looking for more people to help, get involved, and create sustainability. Their actions are geared toward the needs of the present generations and designed to benefit future generations so that the seeds they plant today grow trees that provide shade for others to enjoy for years to come.

Mrs. Nevada-America’s Inspiring Journey as a CASA Advocate

From the pageant stage to making a difference in children’s lives ARTICLE BY PAIGE CANDEE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GEORGINA VAUGHAN

20

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

Mrs. Nevada-America 2023, Tomilynn Clark, is not your average beauty pageant queen. While she has made an impact in the world of pageantry, it's her unwavering commitment to her role as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) that truly distinguishes her. This native Nevadan's inspiring journey is deeply rooted in her personal experiences and her dedication to making a difference in the lives of children. After growing up in Ely, Nevada, Tomilynn eventually became a wife and mother of four children. Her career took her through the ranks of mortgage lending. Now, Tomilynn, along with her husband Charles, directs and owns a private equity firm named Infinite Approval LLC, focusing on nonprofit housing and projects. However, it's her role as a CASA that takes center stage in her life. Over the past year, she has dedicated over 300 volunteer hours to this essential cause. Tomilynn's journey into the world of beauty pageants was inspired by her daughter who had been competing for several years. Witnessing the positive impact that pageantry had on her daughter's ability to contribute to the community, Tomilynn decided to use her own voice for a greater purpose. Raised in foster care for the first seven years of her life, Tomilynn understands the trauma of feeling disposable and abandoned. Her life story is one of resilience, and she feels it's her calling to prevent other children from enduring similar pain or, at the very least, to minimize their suffering. "One of the most rewarding aspects of my pageant journey has been the platform it provides for me to speak at various events," Tomilynn shares. "Through my platform, I raise awareness

about how individuals can make a tangible difference in society from the ground up. I educate people on becoming CASA volunteers, emphasizing that they can change a child's life by being their voice in court — a role driven solely by compassion and volunteerism." As Mrs. Nevada-America, Tomilynn's primary goal is to recruit and retain as many CASAs as possible, particularly in Clark County, where the need is urgent. Currently, there are only 250-400 CASAs available for cases, while 1000 are required. Research has shown that children with CASAs are more likely to find safe, permanent homes, excel in school, and are less likely to re-enter foster care. CASA/GAL also addresses critical issues, including child sex trafficking, helping victims of the opioid crisis, and advocating for children with incarcerated parents. Tomilynn's journey serves as a powerful reminder that kindness, friendliness, and compassion can drive meaningful change in the world. Her achievement of winning the Congeniality title and securing a top-six position at Mrs. America exemplifies the values that pageantry should represent — an opportunity to make a positive impact on society. For Tomilynn Clark, Nevada is more than just a place to reside; it's her home, a symbol of hope, dreams, and enduring memories. Her love for the state's unique charm mirrors her commitment to her community and the people she tirelessly serves. In her, Nevada has found a shining example of what it means to rally behind one another, both in the best of times and the worst of times, creating a place where warmth and hospitality leave a lasting legacy.

Tips for Navigating Technology & Teens C O M B AT I N G C Y B E R B U L LY I N G A S A C O M M U N I T Y

As we approach the holiday season, the warm glow of festivities fills the air, reminding us of the importance of family and community. This joyous time also presents an opportunity for us to come together as a community and address the challenges posed by technology, particularly when it comes to our teens. While technology can be a blessing, it also brings its share of concerns, one of the most pressing being cyberbullying. In a world where social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok are an integral part of daily life for our teens, the issue of overuse of technology is something many parents, including attorney Kyle Tatum of ACE Law Group, grapple with. "I do have kids, and it's an issue we deal with," Tatum acknowledges. "I mean, if we let kids run wild, they could be on the phone or their computer 10 hours a day." However, it's not just excessive screen time that concerns parents. The danger of cyberbullying looms large. According to recent research by the Pew Research Center, half of all U.S. teens report being bullied or harassed online. An example of this issue occurred right here in Southern Nevada. Tatum, working alongside ACE

Law Group's Founder and Lead Attorney, Patrick Kang, was involved in a case concerning former Clark County School District student Min Woo Cho. In 2019, Cho's family filed a lawsuit alleging that the Clark County School District had not done enough to protect their son, who was a Junior at West Career and Technical Academy at the time. Their claim stemmed from the severe online bullying he endured at the hands of his classmates. Ultimately, the jury ruled in Cho's favor. Tatum notes, "This case is an example that this problem of cyberbullying is out there, and it's something that every family should have a conversation with their children about, especially given how much time kids and teens are spending online." The good news is that our State Legislature has taken proactive measures to address this issue and ensure the safety of our young people. Laws are in place that categorize all forms of bullying as illegal, with mandatory requirements for school districts to report and respond promptly to these cases. Tatum highlights, "There are state laws on the books where parents are liable for the conduct of their minor children." He adds that parents can be

25

held accountable for their children's wrongful actions, emphasizing the importance of instilling responsibility. As the holidays approach, many kids and teens will likely have the latest cell phones or tablets on their wish lists. Alongside these presents, Tatum suggests that a sit-down conversation with the entire family should be a mandatory gift. "It's important for parents to have a good line of communication with their children," Tatum advises. "It's key to have that line of trust so that the kids can come to you and ask questions and have that safe space to talk to their mom and dad in a positive way." This holiday season, let's not just exchange presents but also share conversations that strengthen the bonds within our families and communities. Together, we can combat cyberbullying and ensure our teens' online experiences are safe and uplifting, just like the spirit of the season.

Gather

Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

ad i t i o n al Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display. CONTINUED >

Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky. Adding a cloth napkin and cloth placemat is a great way to add texture and more autumn color to your table. If the weather doesn’t cooperate on your day, bring the outdoors in with a lovely indoor garden party dressed up in fall foliage.

Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. Inspired by wooded acreage, the Spode Woodland Collection transferware designs are rooted in proper hunting tradition and perfect for marrying nature with traditional elegance. Dating back to 1831, the collection features various animals centered by the British Flowers border. This French antique dining room set was chosen for an intimate gathering for four. The fawn table runner mimicking deer spots brings an earthy, yet elevated foundation as the base for this table setting. Coordinating fawn napkins wrapped with twine and topped with natural feathers creates a whimsical touch. The stunning centerpiece starts with a vintage silver water pitcher that is then filled with fresh, sweet arrowwood Viburnums leaves. To complete the look, pair crystal glasses with vintage crystal stemware, and mix gold flatware with antique silver water pitchers, delicate salt and pepper shakers and your favorite trays.

Falling For Neutrals SEASONAL DECOR TIPS FOR KEEPING IT SIMPLE I love decorating for the holiday season, but it gets tough if trying to keep a home decor airy, light and neutral. My home is full of neutrals, such as linen, khaki, white and gray, so decorating for the holidays can be tricky with the bright and bold themes on display at the stores. Here are tips regarding how to achieve a festive look without going overboard.

LESS IS MORE First, whenever decorating for the holiday season, I clear what's possible to make room for what's coming. I eliminate decor pieces that are displayed year-round to avoid adding clutter to rooms. Giving decor pieces or floral arrangements their own space to shine can pull the room together and make it feel very designed.

or evergreen branches with pine cones to fill vases. Add a battery-operated strand of lights and you’re looking just like a designer home magazine spread.

GO COZY Swapping out usual throw pillows and throw blankets for plushy, cuddly materials and seasonal prints are another simple way to add holiday spirit without being so literal. Opting for neutral plaids, cable knits, or sherpa materials add that feeling of fall and winter.

CATER TO ALL THE SENSES Don’t forget about the smell! Stocking up on candles that smell like the season is the last missing piece for a holiday vibe. The total sensory feeling of the holidays is what really brings a home to life, whether it's pumpkin spice burning for Thanksgiving or a fresh pine and cedar for Christmas.

STICK TO THE PALETTE As best as possible, I try to stick to each of the color palettes in my room. When it’s time to bring out pumpkins or holiday Santas, I stick to white and neutral or add in color pops of gold and silver to keep everything flowing. If I start to add too many primary colors, it ends up looking like a mash-up gone astray.

CELEBRATE MEMORIES The holidays are often bursting with family traditions and memories, and decor can reflect that, too. I have many items handed down over the years that I like admiring, but if they aren’t quite right for my room, there are options to bring the spirit of them to life. Framed holiday family photos in a black and white filter are an excellent way to tie in your history of celebrating in a subtle way.

LOOK TO NATURE Some of my favorite items to use for holiday decor come from a simple nature walk. Using actual items you find, or just getting inspiration from the outdoors is a great way to bring sights of the season indoors. For fall, elements such as branches, leaves and neutral gourds match with everything. For winter, I love using sticks with berries

If items aren’t working together, don’t be afraid to get crafty. Painting pumpkins with spray paint or tying some neutral ribbons around existing vases are an easy and affordable way to make them fit a specific aesthetic. NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/S O UT HV E GAS
