The Kids & Pets Issue

August 2022 PUBLISHER

Chad Jeffry | Chad.Jeffry@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Paige Candee | paige.candee@citylifestyle.com

Our Kids & Pets Issue is one of the most popular magazines of the year with City Lifestyle magazines across the country. Focusing on our families is a great sense of pride. I take no exception. Here in the Jeffry household, we have two kids, ages six and four, and our 11-year-old Westie. Through the constant craziness and stress of everyday life, we couldn’t be more blessed to have happy and healthy kids. For this month’s letter, I reached out to various family and friends to ask them what makes being a parent so special here in Las Vegas. Many times, I heard about the amazing diversity of our city and the uniqueness of what this community brings. I guess when you grow up here, visiting colleges as a high school senior is probably a little less intimidating. As you read through this month’s issue, you can get some tips on introducing a new baby or pet to your existing pet and some great expert advice on creating a strategic plan for your family — yes, for your family. Enjoy highlights on organizations that support our community, like the Nevada SPCA, which is celebrating 40 years. And Garden Farms, which helps our community learn how to grow food in their own space, even in the harsh southwest desert. Please consider supporting these great organizations; they rely on the amazing support of our residents, like you, to continue making our town such a great place for locals.

Raising and Loving a Well-Behaved Dog ADVICE AND TIPS FROM EXPERTS ARTICLE BY PATRANYA BHOOLSUWAN

Having a pet [especially a dog] can bring a person the kind of joy and companionship that can be life-changing. But taking care of man’s best friend can be challenging and overwhelming, and that’s when proper training becomes a necessity. We checked in with some local dog experts for some tips on how to help your pooch stay happy and well-behaved now and for years to come. Lori Heeren: Executive Director, Nevada SPCA WHAT’S YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR PEOPLE LOOKING TO BRING A NEW DOG INTO THEIR HOME? While our biggest goal is to get an animal into a loving home [and the right home] as soon as possible, we want to make sure that the adoption sticks and the animal is not returned to us. We would often tell people interested in an active puppy that if they don’t have the time and they are not going to spend time training the animal, it would not be the right fit for the family. Animals are a commitment and a responsibility. They are not a novelty; you have to commit to potty training and behavior training. DOES EVERY DOG NEED TRAINING? No, it’s really an individual decision depending on the breeds. For example, I had a 10-year-old pit-bull mix that appeared on one of the TV appearances,

and he was an older dog — which tend to be calmer. He was well behaved. That’s a dog that was ready to go. He’s potty trained and was not going to require any training. But we do have a lot of other ones, the puppies especially, that will need some training to be a good fit for a family. Many times, animals don’t work out at home because they are just not a priority. If you are not going to commit to training your animal, then it probably won’t work out. DO YOU HAVE A GOOD TRAINING STORY THAT STAYED WITH YOU? We once had a dog that we pulled from another shelter. He was a Queensland Heeler and was with us for almost three months. He was a cattle dog, so he was really active, and getting him out the door was hard. Then, when we put him on TV, a man saw him and gave him the best home. The dog now splits his time between the man’s boat in California and here in Las Vegas in a huge home with a large yard. We have even gone out and visited with him, and he’s living his best life. Cathy Brooks: Life Coach and Canine Behaviorist, Unleashed Leadership WHAT IS THE CORE PHILOSOPHY OF HYDRANT CLUB WHEN IT COMES TO DOG TRAINING? I always tell people that we help dogs with their humans and help humans to be CONTINUED > AUGUST 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/S O UT HV E GAS

better humans in the process. Specifically, we support creating, growing, and maintaining balanced, healthy, and happy relationships for dogs and their people, taking that relationship above and beyond anything that a dog owner could ever possibly imagine. IS THERE SUCH A THING AS THE MOST DIFFICULT BREED OF DOGS TO TRAIN? OR DOES IT DEPEND ON EACH DOG OR EACH OWNER? As one of my mentors says - I've never met a dog whose human I couldn't help. Saying that a dog's behaviors are because of its breed isn't entirely inaccurate. Man systematically bred dogs over thousands of years for specific tasks with behaviors related to those tasks. So, the biggest issue is people who get dogs that are a mismatch for their personality and lifestyle and then unreasonably expect the dog to adapt to their life. That is flawed logic. We don't get to love dogs the way we want to love them. We get to love them the way the DOG needs to be loved to be happy. There is good news in that scenario, though. If the human is teachable and willing to do whatever it takes to support their dog, then the dog's behavior can be resolved. Tegan Ortega: Co-owner, Lucky Pup Dog Training / Training Partner, Vegas Pet Rescue Project WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR DOG OWNERS WHO ARE HAVING CHALLENGES TRAINING THEIR DOGS? My best advice would be to strip everything back to basics. Begin with setting your pup up for success. I often have families calling me about their puppy chewing, climbing on counters, or even making a mess in the home. My question is, would you leave your 2-year-old child home alone with unsupervised access and without a diaper on and expect them to make good decisions? Just like with toddlers, we do not expect good choices just yet. Instead, we must manage them. Begin by puppy-proofing your home, and pick up anything that may be a hazard. Make sure you are always supervising your puppy. If you cannot, then make sure your puppy is in a space where they are safe and away from temptation until you return. My suggestion would be a crate. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE A “WELL-BEHAVED” POOCH? A well-behaved pooch, to me, is one that provides companionship. One that understands its job within a household. I don’t necessarily mean a working dog-type job; instead, the job is to hang out and be your buddy, and when you ask him to do something, he does it. This can be achieved with your pup too.

Beloved Pet, Meet Your New Best Friend When a new baby comes along, be prepared for some changes in your pet’s behavior. Any major life change requires an adjustment period, and pets are no different. We had our first grandchild in December and prepared Giorgio, our Maltipoo, by letting him smell the baby’s blanket before introducing her, as the treatment staff at West Russell Animal Hospital recommended. You can also apply baby lotion to your hands to familiarize your pet with the scent. Playing YouTube videos of a baby crying helped accustom our dog to the noise, but nothing prepared him for the unbridled joy he displayed when they finally met.

HOW TO INTRODUCE A NEW BABY OR PET TO YOUR EXISTING PET ARTICLE BY KIM AMATO

“Your pet will pick up on your behavior. Calm invitations to interact and rewards for behaving gently around a baby or a new pet will make the transition easier.”

We knew the first encounters would be very exciting for Giorgio, so we were advised to introduce him in a controlled environment, leashed and at a distance. His good behavior was rewarded, and we gave him extra love and attention whenever the baby went down for a nap or went home. But if there’s anyone in your family who doesn’t like the idea of animals and babies, keep the interactions to a time when they aren’t around to escalate the situation. Setting up the baby’s nursery early also allowed Giorgio to adjust to the change. Animals need consistency, and the slightest deviations can cause stress. When the room was ready, we used it as a play area before the CONTINUED >

baby came over so he would associate it with something positive. You could try wearing a baby carrier around the house to let your pet see that silhouette. Our dog isn’t quite two years old, so he gets excited very easily. When the baby spent a weekend with us, Giorgio was alert to her every sound. If she stirred during the night, he went to the foot of our bed, peered into her crib, made sure she was okay, and looked to us for reassurance. However, older dogs may be indifferent whenever the baby is near and will simply walk away when they hear its cries. A few years back, we had a Rat Terrier who needed a companion, so we went to a local shelter and adopted a sweet Miniature Pinscher. We kept the dogs leashed around each other for a few days, fed them in different parts of the house, and watched as they slowly gravitated towards one another. When we rescued an adult cat a few years later, she was the boss from the moment she came home, and the dogs always kept their distance. Cats need free reign so they can safely escape, if necessary, especially if another pet shows signs of aggression. Our dogs always responded to squeaky toys, and we could redirect their behavior by distracting them. Your pet will pick up on your behavior. Calm invitations to interact and rewards for behaving gently around a baby or a new pet will make the transition easier. Continue to provide them with mental and physical space to adjust, especially cats. Keep a gate in between baby and pets until you’re completely comfortable with their behavior. And no matter how gentle they are, always keep a watchful eye.

“Your pet will pick up on your behavior. Calm invitations to interact and rewards for behaving gently around a baby or a new pet will make the transition easier.” 22

TEACHING KIDS AND LOCALS THE ART AND SCIENCE OF GROWING YOUR OWN FOOD

Cultivating A THOUSAND GARDENS

“Empowering our community to grow their own food” is the motto of Garden Farms. Garden Farms is a Las Vegas-based urban farming company dedicated to providing hands-on food cultivation education to backyard gardeners, communities, and schools across the Las Vegas Valley. They are pioneers of urban farming education in Las Vegas and the first of their kind to create a personalized, one-on-one service to teach the community how to grow their own gardens. Co-founders Brittany and Bryan Vellinga always had beautiful, large backyard gardens where they would teach their children the importance of growing food. Friends began asking them to help grow a garden in their backyards, and they realized it was a skill that not many people in Las Vegas pursued. Brittany and Bryan Vellinga founded Garden Farms of Nevada in 2010 as a dynamic duo, with Bryan building boxes and Brittany teaching how to grow. Over the last 12 years, Garden Farms has grown more than 1,000 gardens. “Garden Farms has provided me the opportunity to teach people of all ages everything I’ve learned about plants, their cultivation, eating clean, and natural medicine,” said Vanessa Portillo, a certified clinical herbalist and Executive Director of Garden Farms. “We are grateful to have our own nonprofit branch, as well as a virtual farmers market, to increase food access throughout the city.”

Garden Farms provides organically grown produce from their community gardens through their virtual farmers market. People can go online to fill their baskets. The produce is harvested, organized, and delivered to their doorsteps every Thursday. Garden Farms also bridges the gap between the school garden, inspiration, and hobbies in a way that is fun and easy to learn. They partner with local professionals to bring their talents directly to students in their garden spaces. Kids paint garden murals, do yoga in the garden, explore food colors, and enjoy healthy snacks. “You will never see a child more excited about eating a vegetable than when they grew it themselves,” said Veronica. “It’s not only the feeling of satisfaction from growing something but also the understanding of its origin. Seeing the vegetable in the store, knowing that it came from a plant, knowing the process, and knowing what its leaves and flowers look like… that is truly magical!” Garden Farms provides food access programs for underserved communities located in food deserts, thanks to fundraising efforts, local sponsors, and volunteers. The team helps people build gardens and spend an entire season teaching them food cultivation and nutrition. In the end, everyone celebrates by sharing a meal made with ingredients they grew together.

“THE MOST AMAZING SAUTÉED KALE” Garden Farms shared the following recipe, written by a 5th-grade student:

INGREDIENTS • 1 large bunch kale, washed, and coarsely chopped (dinosaur kale is my favorite) • 2-3 T coconut oil or olive oil • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (more or less to taste) • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 2-3 shallots, sliced • 1/2 cup chicken or vegetable stock • Salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS 01 Heat coconut oil in a large sauté pan. Add shallots and cook for two to three minutes. Add garlic and red pepper flakes and cook for one minute, stirring often to prevent burning. 02 Add and mix together kale, broth, salt, and pepper. Cover and cook for five minutes, tossing occasionally. Remove the cover and continue cooking until most of the broth has cooked away. Serve hot and enjoy!

TIPS TO MAKE COOKING MORE FUN: Cooking can provide a special bonding experience for parents and kids. Having kids measure ingredients gives them a rewarding task and helps them feel helpful when cooking together. Kale is very easy to prepare by just tearing the leaf from the main stem, which is a great job for kids of any age. Parents can allow kids to measure out oil and broth. Please remember to measure out the oil and broth into separate bowls in case of overflow. Kids can also help peel the garlic and shallots to get them ready, drop in a pinch of salt and pepper, and have them do the taste check to see if it needs anything else.

As families across South Vegas nestle back into their school routines, taking the time to pause and think about how you want the next year to look for your family is critical. Your kiddos aren’t getting any younger, and you will not regret taking the time to plan your year so you can maximize fond memories and minimize regrets. 1. Reflect on how the last school year went in terms of what worked well, what failed miserably, and everything in between. Sweep your mind and take notes so you can create a schedule that feels even better this year. 2. Add federal and state holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and other important occasions such as weddings and planned vacations to your calendar so you can plan accordingly. 3. School calendar in hand — add all the professional development days, teacher conferences, holiday concerts, sports, breaks, etc., to your calendar. 4. Add your work schedule to your calendar. If you’re able to make your own hours, determine what you want your ideal week to look like this year considering your kids’ ages, stages, and your own desires. Create a work schedule that fits your goals, finances, and lifestyle, and stick to it! 5. Talk with your kids about what activities they want to participate in. 10 Strategic Family Planning Tips for Busy Parents 6. Get clarity on what projects you want to tackle in your business(if you own one) and your personal life. Now that you no longer need to drive little Jimmy to his summer music class two mornings a week, it might be the perfect time to tackle that bathroom renovation project you’ve been dreaming up. Add it to your calendar. 7. Consider what you want your schedule to look and feel like. Morning walks, bi-weekly yoga, Friday date nights, and a monthly massage could be nice. Add your self-care and relationship time blocks to your calendar as well. YOU matter, too! 8. Throughout your strategic family planning sessions, keep your family’s resources in mind. Consider your family members’ time, energy, mental bandwidth, physical health, finances, pre-existing commitments, and outside support. Doing so will force you to prioritize based on your available resources and give you the clarity to move through decision-making and calendar planning more quickly. 9. Use a digital calendar that updates instantly and that your family members can access. It keeps everyone on the same page and can conveniently be edited on-the-go. No need to take (and lose) notes that must be transferred to a large calendar in your mudroom later when plans change. 10. Keep flexibility in mind. Even the best planners are thrown curve balls that make pivoting necessary (hello COVID!). Be willing to adjust your carefully scheduled plans as necessary and get back on track as soon as possible.
