Since I started on this journey to publish South Vegas City Lifestyle, there is one thing that has constantly blown me away—this town gives and supports each other in a way that I did not know existed. By now, I’m sure you’ve noticed that charities are a big part of what we do. I ask this one question in every single meeting I have: who are the people and organizations that are behind the scenes helping those in need? Whether it’s helping our four-legged friend find their “furever” home, supporting those with illnesses like cancer, helping our young students that might need a supply or two, or finding ways to help the homeless in whatever way possible—it’s all happening basically behind the curtain. Take a moment to read about what Julie Cane is doing in the community to shine a light on those in need. And consider supporting the Nevada Ballet Theatre and The Smith Center for the Performing Arts with this year’s Nutcracker performances. I urge you to consider giving during this time in whatever way that might work for you, whether through giving time, providing funding, or even sharing what’s happening with your social networks. Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada Raises More Than $67,000 Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada’s third annual “Swing Fore Safe Homes” charity golf tournament and virtual silent auction raised $67,000 recently. The funds will enable the nonprofit to provide critical repairs to approximately seven homes at no cost to low-income homeowners, including seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities. Collective Giving Group Seeks to Donate $100,000 to Local Nonprofit Impact Las Vegas, a collective giving group, is celebrating its 10th anniversary by selecting one local nonprofit on which to bestow a $100,000 grant. The group, founded in 2013, has collectively given nearly $400,000 to local charities since they were founded. Each member of Impact Las Vegas gives $1,000 and votes on grant submissions. If you are looking for a way to experience Yosemite without sleeping on the ground (that is, if you were even able to get a camping reservation), a sophisticated hillside resort is waiting for you. Yosemite Rush Creek Lodge & Spa is a little slice of heaven, especially for families traveling with kids. I had the privilege of staying at the tuckedaway resort surrounded by sequoias and natural beauty just outside the Highway 120 West entrance to Yosemite National Park. There was something for everyone in my family of five – restaurant and tavern, zip lines, spa, arts and crafts, game room, s’mores pits, pool, jacuzzi, fitness classes, and excursions. And, of course, it was only a short drive to the Giant Sequoias and Yosemite Valley. The Lodge is open all year round and is quickly becoming one of the premier destinations for mountain weddings. The warmer months offer barbeque celebrations by the pool and outdoor activities galore. While the cooler months see snowshoeing, hot tubing, and more. Nestled beneath towering sequoia trees, Yosemite Rush Creek Lodge & Spa welcomed us to its authentic, yet well-appointed mountain retreat situated on 20 forested acres along the outskirts of Yosemite National Park. With the resort’s lineup of activities, we couldn’t wait to put down our phones and unplug, savoring the magnificent natural beauty of the area and enjoying Mother Nature’s playground. After checking in, we stepped into the General Store to find a trail mix bar with more than a dozen offerings to take back to our room and keep us fueled on our nature walks and hikes. Walking out towards the pool, the Guest Lodge and the Main Lodge flank on either side while a fire pit and an outdoor game area punctuate the ends. The Main Lodge houses the restaurant and tavern, as well as a guest lounge with plush leather chairs and sofas, fireplaces, and card/board game tables where we could kick back and unwind after a day of explorations. There is an indoor game room for children to climb a treehouse-inspired wall and for teens to play air hockey or billiards. An outdoor terrace beckons guests to play a game of shuffleboard while enjoying the crisp mountain air. The cherry on this mountaintop was the newly renovated indoor-outdoor spa which gave us a chance to truly experience the magnitude and breathtaking beauty of the extraordinary setting. The spa was reimagination from the staff’s personal experiences with Yosemite’s landscape and enchantment. The Rush Creek Spa specifically aims to mimic the extraordinary moments an adventurer would experience while visiting Yosemite – such as

magnificent waterfalls, granite formations, glaciers, river rocks smoothed by rushing waters, natural hot springs, and fragrant wildflowers. The spa’s covered and heated outdoor lounge is anchored by a soothing granite waterfall mineral hot tub where guests can watch the snow fall against the mountains in the background. In contrast, a hanging day bed and warm river rock beds, as well as additional lounge chairs, offer plenty of places to relax before or after receiving treatment. Inside the spa, we found unique spaces, from an aromatherapy steam room and Himalayan salt block sauna designed to capture the feel of hiking the trails on a hot summer day to the cool mist room and warm waterfall coves designed to mimic a roaring waterfall spraying mist against your skin. While many family trips are spent running around keeping children entertained, we extremely appreciated the family-friendly spa experience as it opens to families daily from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. so that

everyone may enjoy the amenities together before it returns to adults only. Beyond the spa, there’s no shortage of activities to surprise and delight guests of all ages. From a one-of-a-kind playground to kids’ zip lines (although kids weren’t the only ones acting like children on these!), a 60-foot embankment slide, as well as an assortment of lawn games including bocce ball, horseshoes, life-size checkers, and corn hole. Additional activities perfect for the cooler seasons include nature crafts, paint parties, glass blowing, and wilderness talks discussing the area. Nightly s’mores around the fire are the perfect sweet ending to an adventure-filled day. Still, for those looking for more, the recreation team is happy to assist with evening stargazing, snowshoeing, or other adventures. The tavern also hosts late-night entertainment, including theme parties and karaoke. When it’s time for bed, Rush Creek Lodge offers a range of accommodations, including Lodge Rooms, Lodge Suites, Hillside Villas, and One-Bedroom Villas. Lodge
Rooms are ideal for families of up to four, and each offers private decks perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee while overlooking the forest or savoring the last beams of light at sunset. Slightly larger, the Lodge Suites offer a private bedroom and separate living room. The One-Bedroom Villas offer a more private experience and are sprinkled throughout the property, with accommodations for up to four guests. For larger parties of up to six guests, a Hillside Villa offers an entry foyer, a master bedroom that includes a king bed, a large sitting area with a queen sofa bed and cast-iron gas fireplace, a second bedroom with either a second king bed or two twin beds, a private bathroom with divided vanity and shower areas, and an expansive private deck with forest and sunset views. One thing was for sure — nobody from my family was ready to leave when our time was up at the hillside woodland of Rush Creek Lodge. I can tell you that we will be back for sure to have another relaxed, sophisticated experience. See you there!

The Nevada Ballet Theatre’s The Nutcracker Returns A CLASSIC HOLIDAY TRADITION SPARKLES AT THE SMITH CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

This December, The Nevada Ballet Theatre’s dazzling production of The Nutcracker returns to The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. By far one of Las Vegas’ favorite holiday traditions, this year’s performance of The Nutcracker by The Nevada Ballet Theatre is sure to fill your holiday season with sparkling wonder and amazement. According to German folklore, nutcrackers were given as keepsakes to bring luck to the family and protect the home. Most commonly resembling a toy soldier, Christmas nutcracker dolls represent good luck while also frightening away malevolent spirits. In the story of The Nutcracker, the lead female role is played by Clara, the eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum. Clara is delighted by the wooden Nutcracker doll she receives from her Godfather on Christmas Eve. Yet once night falls, the Nutcracker

comes to life, and Clara finds herself on a magical adventure to save the Nutcracker from the evil Mouse King. In 2012, The Nevada Ballet Theatre presented a new and original production of The Nutcracker at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. Choreographed by James Canfield, the new production featured new sets and a full orchestra. Whimsical costumes for The Nevada Ballet Theatre’s production of The Nutcracker were designed by the award-winning costume designer Sandra Woodall and created at the legendary Parsons School of Design in New York. “The Nutcracker is The Nevada Ballet Theatre’s largest production of the year. Choreographed by James Canfield, The Nutcracker was specifically built for the Reynolds Hall stage at The Smith Center,” said Roy Kaiser, Artistic Director for The Nevada Ballet Theatre. Las Vegas welcomed Kaiser in 2017. “The Smith Center for the Performing Arts is one of the most beautiful theaters I’ve worked in my entire career,” said Kaiser. Refined to

keep the production alive and interesting, this season’s production of The Nutcracker features dancers from around the globe, including several new dancers, resulting in a sensational performance. As fabulous as it is to watch The Nevada Ballet Theatre’s The Nutcracker at The Smith Center, so too is a peek behind the curtain. The talent, dedication, and technical demands are just as critical backstage as they are on stage. Behind the stage, nimble fairies, toy soldiers, mischievous rodents, and visitors from faraway lands fall into quick snippets of repose. Driving the scene backstage is the stage manager and the men and women of the run crew, ensuring the performance runs smoothly. As we return to rejoicing and celebrating with friends and family, gather your loved ones and return to Las Vegas’ most cherished holiday performance. The Nevada Ballet Theatre will present its holiday classic, The Nutcracker, at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts from Friday, December 9th through Christmas Eve, Saturday, December 24th.

For Julie Cane, the best gifts don’t come wrapped in crisp paper, tied up with a perfect bow, and placed under a tree. The best gifts are brief moments of time shared with others, celebrating a birthday, offering a sandwich and a warm pair of socks, or a once-in-a-year dance celebration, forgetting the worries of the world. Cane, whose role as Corporate Director of Marketing and Community Relations for Gaudin Motor Company’s three Las Vegas car dealerships, complements her personal interests and commitment to the community perfectly. She believes strongly in the power of giving time rather than presents; so much so that for her birthday, she started “presence

not presents.” Every year for her birthday, she gathers 20 friends and celebrates her day by giving back through service in the community. “It really started when my mom died,” said Cane. “Nine hundred people showed up at her wake and kept saying the same thing; they all had little stories of moments they had with her — she was famous for buying coffee for the car behind her. I kind of thought about it, and that was it. It was all about those little moments. I realized the power that I had to make change with small groups of people.” Though she’d been involved in charity work before, seeing the impact of those brief moments her mom had spent with so many people helped Cane realize the power that she had to make change with small groups of people. Today, her impact is felt by small and not-sosmall groups across the valley. Most recently, Cane has gotten involved with the Shine A Light organization, which engages with the underserved population of people living in the underground flood channels of Las Vegas. Without hesitation, Cane started going into the tunnels in May 2021, joining groups of 100 volunteers who go down every Saturday, delivering freshly made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, hygiene products, flashlights, batteries, and, most importantly, engaging in conversation. While she’d been friends with the organization’s Executive Director, Paul Vautrinot, for years, it wasn’t until an unlikely pairing with Las Vegas Raider Darren Waller that she started going into the tunnels herself. “He was driving one of Gaudin’s cars. And they have to meet with me as part of the process, and I have to understand their passions as far as the community. Darren’s was based in recovery, and he and I ended up going down into the tunnels,” said Cane. “Darren and Paul bonded, and the Darren Waller Foundation is now funding a lot of what we do.” Cane joined the Shine A Light Board about six months ago and takes community groups into the tunnels monthly, helping to educate community leaders on what it’s truly like, and changing the way they see homeless people. “I grew up in a very loving family, I never went without anything, and this has just changed me,” said Cane. “It has made me a better person. I see the people who go out every Saturday, they were

them, and they are so grateful now that it’s their giveback. They are a tribe and celebrate everyone’s sobriety.” Cane celebrates with other groups as well. Every month for the past six years, Cane has baked cupcakes for the James Boys and Girls Club’s monthly Birthday Club celebration. But her biggest joy comes each December when she draws on her nightlife experience from working at the Palms Casino Resort and puts together a nightclub event for adults with special needs. “Of all the things, Club Shine is me. That’s my baby,” she said. And there have been a lot of things. Over the years, Cane has given her time to a variety of organizations throughout Southern Nevada, including Joy Prom, a prom experience for individuals with special needs, The Just One Project, Three Square, and Serving Our Kids Foundation, while also chairing the Grant A Gift Autism Foundation Gala. She was also a member of the Leadership Las Vegas Class of 2020 and remains involved as an alumnus. “I think you should ask yourself what you care about and start there. What I’ve found is when it’s personal, you tend to stay involved,” said Cane. At Gaudin, Cane has made it both personal and professional. “When [Gary Ackerman, Gaudin Dealer Principal] hired me, he wanted me to work on our brand in the community,” said Cane. “It’s been the greatest gift because part of my job is working with different organizations. I love going around and learning about different groups and how they can fit in with our stores.” Gaudin Motor Company has always been heavily involved in the community Cane explained, “When George Gaudin founded the company, he said, ‘Serving our clients and our community is not just what we do, it is who we are,’ and to have that be a part of my job makes it really easy to make it a part of my life.”

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
