MayLadies Issue

There’s something truly special about taking a moment to recognize the women in our lives who make the world more vibrant and beautiful. Whether it's our mothers, daughters, friends, or colleagues, these women are often the silent forces that shape our days and make life richer.

With Mother’s Day this month, our thoughts naturally turn to all those incredible women—biological mothers and mother figures alike—who have made an unforgettable impact on us. It’s the teachers, the friends, the neighbors, and the family members who offer their love, wisdom, and support in countless ways.

For me, Mother’s Day always brings back memories of time spent with my mom. We had a tradition of meeting for breakfast whenever we could—nothing fancy, just coffee, good conversation, and a lot of laughter. Those mornings were simple, but they meant everything. My mom had a way of making people feel seen and cared for, whether it was family, friends, or someone she had just met. Looking back, I realize how much those moments shaped the way I value connection, community, and the women who pour so much into the lives of others every single day.

This month, as we celebrate these remarkable women, I also want to encourage you to support local businesses owned by women in our community. One of my favorite parts of this job is connecting with and championing the incredible women here in South Tampa. From movers and shakers to makers and builders, these women bring so much to the table, both seen and unseen. Their contributions, often behind the scenes, create beauty and impact that cannot be replicated.

Take a moment this month to recognize the women in your life. Send a text, make a phone call, or arrange a video call with the women who have made a difference for you. It’s a simple but powerful way to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much they’re loved.

Here’s to celebrating the women who make life so much more meaningful. Happy Mother’s Day and cheers to the ladies who inspire us every day!

Making an Impact

THESE SPECIAL WOMEN ARE MAKING A TRUE IMPACT ON OUR COMMUNITY.

ARTICLE BY BETHANY NORMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANA LAURA ACOSTA PHOTOGRAPHY

DeAndra Bolden

Metropolitan Ministries

DeAndra Bolden, Associate Director of Development and Community Engagement, is passionate about connecting people to a mission that restores hope for families across Tampa Bay.

Raised in a family where generosity and support were a way of life, DeAndra knew she wanted to help others.

“Even though we didn’t have a lot, there was an abundance of love and a willingness to help,” said Bolden. Today, she connects individuals and businesses to a mission that

supports families experiencing homelessness. One moment that stayed with her happened while volunteering at Metropolitan Ministries’ Holiday Tent.

A family who lost their home in a hurricane shared how meaningful it was to receive a Thanksgiving meal.

“Knowing families facing hardship could gather and celebrate reminded me why this work matters,” she explained. For DeAndra, community means showing up so people feel seen, supported, and valued.

Laura Bleacher & Robin Taylor

Honeybee Home

Robin Taylor and Laura Bleacher, the mother-daughter duo behind Honeybee Home, are creating more than beautiful spaces. They’re building connections across South Tampa.

Their boutique was born from a shared passion for design and to create something meaningful together as women and members of the community. “We want to help people create spaces that feel like home,” they shared. “Spaces that reflect their personalities, lifestyles, and stories.”

Honeybee Home has become a place where creativity and community meet for connection, creativity, and shared inspiration.

For Robin and Laura, community means showing up. From supporting local schools to fundraising, hosting private events to sponsoring luncheons, they believe small gestures can make a difference. “Community means knowing people by name and celebrating their milestones,” they said.

Their hope is to inspire women to pursue their passions and create something meaningful.

Paola Leon-Garcia

PG Studio Inc. & PG Lux

Paola Leon-Garcia, founder of PG Studio Inc. and PG Lux, approaches architecture through what she calls “Happitecture”—the belief that designed spaces can bring joy and elevate how people live.

With training in architecture and art, Paola recognized her perspective to see possibilities others might overlook. “Luxury is not about status,” explained Leon-Garcia. “It’s about customization and creating spaces that reflect who our clients are and who they want to become.”

Through PG Studio, Paola designs environments that foster connection, productivity, and self-expression. She believes a space should do more than look beautiful—it should support life happening inside it.

For Paola, community begins with connection and service. “When you take time to understand people and serve them,” she said, “community becomes a powerful force for growth.”

Her work reflects a belief that design helps people live fully.

Keleisha Carter

Keleisha Carter, founder of KC Capital Group and Legacy Bloom Capital, is passionate about expanding access to wealth-building opportunities and helping others see what is possible.

A first-generation wealth builder and immigrant from Jamaica, Keleisha understands the determination it takes to start from nothing and build something lasting. “I didn’t grow up around investment funds or passive income,” shared Carter. “What I saw was hard work. Ownership is what builds true generational wealth.”

That belief continues to guide her work today. Through her platform, Keleisha connects people with opportunities to grow, invest, and create lasting impact while supporting projects that strengthen communities and help families build financial security.

For Keleisha, community is built through relationships and shared opportunity. “Community isn’t transactional,” she explained, “it’s about building trust, sharing access, and leaving doors open for the next person.”

Christina McCue Hoek

The Spiral Staircase

Christina McCue Hoek, founder of The Spiral Staircase, created a space where women can feel seen, supported, and connected.

Inspired by her experiences navigating seasons of life—from young professional to motherhood and entrepreneurship, Christina recognized how difficult it can be to find friendships as life evolves. “Those friendships shaped me and carried me through much,” she explained. “I wanted to create a place where connection felt natural and intentional.”

Through curated gatherings and experiences, The Spiral Staircase has become a community where women build relationships, collaborate, and celebrate one another’s growth.

For Christina, community is found in everyday moments. “It’s women showing up for one another, celebrating the wins, and holding space for the hard days,” said Hoek. “When women gather with intention, something powerful happens.”

Her hope is that every woman who walks through doors feels she belongs.

UNDER Pressure

When your body keeps score: how women internalize stress and what to do about it.

Most women are carrying far more than they let on, or even acknowledge to themselves. Managing careers, households, aging parents, and kids all at once, many times without a word of complaint. Busy gets worn like a badge of honor. The most burned-out wins, right?

But here’s what most don’t realize until it’s too late — the body keeps a running tab on all of it.

Stress doesn’t just live in the head. It lives in the hips, the jaw, the knot between the shoulder blades that no number of hot showers can unlock. And when stress goes unacknowledged long enough, it stops being a feeling and starts being a physical condition. The body will only whisper for so long before it starts to scream.

Women tend to internalize stress in ways that are easy to ignore-until they can’t. These symptoms get so normalized they stop registering as symptoms at all. Chronic tension headaches. Jaw clenching at night. Digestive issues that come and go without reason. Persistent fatigue that sleep never touches. A low-grade anxiety humming just beneath the surface. Shoulder and neck pain filed under “just how it is.”

That last one is worth pausing on. Because when did “just how it is” become an acceptable answer? That we just have to push through, even though every day it gets a little harder? What’s actually happening is the nervous system has been running in overdrive for so long, it doesn’t know how to relax. That’s not something wrong with you. That’s basic physiology. Your body attempting to protect you from yourself.

The nervous system operates in two primary modes: sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and repair). Under chronic stress, the body gets stuck in sympathetic mode.

Cortisol and adrenaline stay elevated. Digestion gets jacked up. Inflammation rises. Muscles stay braced, waiting for an impact that may or may not come. Pain skyrockets. The body is doing exactly what it’s supposed to. The problem is, it doesn’t know the difference between a physical threat and a calendar packed with appointments, an overbearing mother-in-law, or years of putting everyone else first instead of taking care of YOU.

Over time, that sustained activation changes things-sleep quality, hormone regulation, immune function, and how emotions get processed and stored. The body becomes a bucket for everything there hasn’t been time or space to feel. Or, honestly, heal. Eventually, that bucket tips over, and physically, all hell breaks loose.

FIVE QUICK BODY CHECKS TO START RIGHT NOW

Before stress patterns can shift, they need to be seen. Run through these five checks once a day, mid-afternoon is when stress tends to rear its ugly head:

Jaw: Clenching? Let your jaw drop open slightly and take one breath.

Shoulders: Creeping up near your ears? Roll them back and down.

Breath: Shallow and high in the chest? Drop it into the belly. Breathe to expand your diaphragm, through your sternum.

Gut: Tight or unsettled? Watch your caffeine intake and look for gut soothing foods like yogurt.

Hands: Clawed? Open and spread your fingers wide like you’re reaching for freedom.

To come back into balance, consistent, intentional signals are what tell the body it is safe to rest, to breathe. Try a slow, extended exhale- think inhaling for four counts, exhaling for six to eight. This directly activates the parasympathetic nervous system. It’s not just calming. It’s a mental signal that the threat has passed.

Moving straight from work mode to mom mode to caregiver mode keeps the nervous system running hot. Even five minutes of stillness between transitions can interrupt that cycle. Walking, stretching, shaking tension out-this isn’t pampering or wasting time. Rest is not a reward to be earned after enough has been done. Rest is regulation. It always was.

The body is not betraying anyone when it starts to break down under pressure. It’s communicating. The only question is whether you’re willing to listen before it has to scream.

Finding Her Voice

ENSURING WOMEN HAVE THE SKILLS AND RESOURCES NEEDED TO THRIVE!

Sometimes all it takes is a spark.

A kind word. An understanding nod. A feeling of belonging. When you’re feeling overwhelmed by the world, lost and looking for connection. For community. When you find it, the world seems to open up for you.

That’s the feeling Ambee Stephens, EmpowHERment Founder and Chief Empowerment Officer, was searching for in 2017 after the loss of her father. “When he passed away, it was really earth shattering for me and my family. In trying to find community, I would go to different places. There was a lot of things for domestic violence, sexual assault, grief in general. But there wasn’t anything just for your everyday person who had lost someone who was looking for just grounding,” shared Stephens.

Ambee filled that need by creating her own support group. Little did she know what it would grow into. “It was supposed to be a group of women that would come together, that would heal and deal. We started off at different coffee shops and restaurants, just meeting and connecting. One thing led to the next. And here we are, all these years later,” added Stephens.

That spark shifted many things for Ambee. She wasn’t the only one looking for that type of connection, and she felt empowered to bring that connection to others. She founded EmpowHERment in 2018 and refocused her future to bring new life to the fledgling organization, shifting focus from a planned career in law, graduating with a master’s degree in Nonprofit Management.

The organization hosts chapters throughout Tampa Bay and beyond, as well as a Community Center in Clearwater.

“What started as your everyday gathering has evolved to full-fledged offerings,” shared Stephens. The community center offers no cost therapy, weekly workshops, a boutique, and hygiene pantry. The organization also offers an app and an entrepreneurship program. “We meet women where they are. You don’t have to be any social-economic status. We just want to know that you want support, and we’re happy to give it to you. We really are all-inclusive.”

The organization truly shines in how it evolves to reflect the needs of the community. “During COVID, we launched the Entrepreneurship Academy because so many women we serve were talking about how their husbands or significant others were abusive during the pandemic,” explained Stephens. “They wanted to find their own way. We launched the Entrepreneurship Academy so women can have the tools they need to launch their own business and find that sufficiency.”

While that may have been the impetus to start the Academy, they’ve found that while the need is still there, the reasons they seek it may be different. Now it’s finding a way to escape corporate burn out or find a solution that also allows them to stay home with their children. “We kind of change with the times, even in terms of finding who we empower and serve,” explained Stephens. “We’re just very intentional about making sure that it truly is a place where women can feel empowered and they still have their integrity when they walk through our doors.”

The biggest need they see today are women looking for therapy as they change their personal narrative and find a fresh path. “So many women are just so tired of the hustle and bustle. Culture has changed so much, and so many women are literally exhausted. I see a lot of people trying to break their own narratives and not really sure how to do it, and looking for someone to understand them,” said Stephens.

“I want the women we serve to love themselves so we can collectively love each other. That’s what it’s all about.”
“We meet women where they are. You don’t have to be any social-economic status. We just want to know that you want support, and we’re happy to give it to you. We really are all-inclusive.”

Ambee is quick to clarify what empowerment is truly about. “Women’s empowerment is not some feminist movement. It truly is how can we give women the tools they need to be self-sufficient and be in community with other people, that includes men and children. I want the women we serve to love themselves so we can collectively love each other. That’s what it’s all about.”

EmpowHERment is focused on working together to help women find their voice. With the community’s support, they’re poised to help women find that spark for years to come. To learn more about EmpowHERment, and how you can support their efforts, visit empowherment.org.

Balancing Act

ARE YOU BALANCING YOUR LIFE AS WELL AS YOU COULD?

Women wear many hats: wife, mother, business owner, volunteer, and more. While many juggle the responsibilities of life well, maintaining true balance can still feel like an ongoing challenge.

Amber Boskers knows that balancing act firsthand. Like many women, she manages family life, business responsibilities, and the unexpected moments that can quickly throw a carefully planned schedule off course.

Over time, she has learned that balance isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about recognizing when things feel off, making intentional adjustments, and creating systems that help life run more smoothly.

Amber shares how she manages the many roles in her life, and the practical ways she brings things back into balance when life inevitably shifts.

“BALANCE BEGINS WITH AWARENESS. WHEN SOMETHING FEELS OFF, PAUSE, RESET, AND CARE FOR YOURSELF FIRST— BECAUSE HOW YOU SHOW UP FOR YOURSELF SHAPES EVERYTHING ELSE.”

TELL US ABOUT THE MANY ROLES YOU BALANCE EACH DAY.

I’m a wife of nearly 24 years to an amazing husband who travels for work. I’m also a mom of two teenagers, one in college and the other a high school junior, and a very active club volleyball mom.

I manage our family’s real estate investments and co-own KohlerHaus Remodeling Co., where we specialize in condo and townhome renovations as well as pre-listing refresh services. I recently launched TradesAIQ, an AI automation business created to help trades professionals streamline operations and improve efficiency in their businesses.

At the same time, I’m overseeing the rebuilding of our flood-damaged home.

Most days start with a plan. I map things out the night before through time blocking and scheduling, but I’ve learned to expect the unexpected and pivot when needed.

HOW CAN YOU TELL WHEN YOUR LIFE IS OUT OF BALANCE?

For me, being out-of-balance means I don’t have the energy or focus to maintain my normal baseline. I start losing stamina, and everyday tasks take longer than they should.

I notice I don’t sleep well, experience decision fatigue, and sometimes skip habits that usually keep me centered, like exercise or healthy eating.

It often begins with something feeling off. If I ignore that feeling, things can start compounding and affect my family, businesses and relationships. Recognizing those signs early helps me pause, reset, and adjust before it impacts everything else.

WHAT ARE THE FIRST STEPS TO GETTING THINGS BACK INTO BALANCE?

Awareness is the first step. Self-care is the next.

You are the focal point for yourself and your family, so taking care of you is essential. When I start feeling off, I focus on actions that help reset my mindset and energy.

AMBER BOSKERS

Amber Boskers brings the same intentional balance she practices in life to her work as co-owner of KohlerHaus Remodeling Co., a Tampa-based remodeling company specializing in condo and townhome renovations and pre-listing refresh services. Through KohlerHaus, Amber works closely with homeowners and sellers to transform spaces with thoughtful updates that enhance function and value.

She’s founder of TradesAIQ, an AI automation company created to help trades professionals streamline operations and improve efficiency in their businesses.

With a background in real estate investment and project management, Amber understands the emotional and financial value of creating homes that function beautifully for families.

That means going outside for a walk, working out, eating healthier, or doing something kind for myself. Sometimes it’s organizing a space or tackling something I’ve been avoiding.

I also lean into gratitude and my faith. Taking action and giving yourself grace helps lower stress and move forward with clarity and renewed perspective.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN BALANCE ONCE YOU HAVE IT?

Consistency, intention, and action help keep me aligned. Prioritizing health, nutrition, exercise, and peace of mind makes a big difference. Staying connected with others and giving back also helps keep me grounded.

Planning also plays a role. I organize my days and weeks with a planner and use a 90-day intention journal to track personal and business goals, which helps keep my priorities clear.

HOW DOES MAINTAINING BALANCE SUPPORT PERSONAL GROWTH?

How you manage one thing is how you manage everything. Balance isn’t static, it changes as we do.

When life feels balanced, you enjoy living your life. We only get one, so finding ways to live it fully, intentionally, and with gratitude is the real achievement.

BECKY HILLYARD

From Side Hustle to Style Empire

The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”

She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s, she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?

A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Becky in Splendid x @CellaJaneBlog Spring 2026 Collection

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?

A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.

Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?

A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.

Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?

A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?

A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.

This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle Podcast.
