The Importance of Fathers

Have you ever paused to think about the impact fathers have on their homes and families? The truth is, the role of a father is immeasurable. Fathers shape homes, nurture growth, and provide the foundation upon which children can thrive. And as a dad, the level of impact you choose to have is entirely in your hands.

I didn’t grow up with my father, but I was surrounded by men who showed up when it mattered. That experience shaped how I see fatherhood today. Watching our son Jace grow up with a dad who is present, intentional, and all in—it’s not something I take for granted. It’s one of the greatest gifts I’ve experienced, and it’s a daily reminder of just how powerful a father’s role can be.

A father’s gifts are unique and lasting—his strength, his words, his guidance—all create an impact that ripples through generations. Here are just a few of the ways fathers build up their homes:

• A father’s strength can be a steady anchor.

• His words can encourage and inspire.

• A dad’s hugs can provide comfort in difficult times.

• A smile from a dad can instill joy and confidence.

• Time spent with a dad is filled with both fun and productivity.

• A dad’s physicality can challenge and excite.

• His guidance can be life-changing.

• A father’s correction is sometimes life-saving.

• Adventures with a dad create unforgettable memories.

This month, let’s celebrate fathers everywhere. If you have a father or father figure in your life, let them know how much they matter to you. And if you are a dad, thank you. You are an invaluable part of your family, your community, and the world.

Happy Father’s Day to all the incredible dads out there! BETHANY

TAKING A CLOSER LOOK

HIGH PERFORMERS ARE LOOKING DEEPER AT BRAIN AND BODY HEALTH.

ARTICLE BY BETHANY NORMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH HUGHES

Most people don’t realize how hard they’re working just to feel normal. From the outside, everything looks right. Responsibilities are handled, meetings are led, results are there. Life is moving forward as it should. But beneath that, there’s often a quieter reality, one that’s easy to ignore. Focus takes more effort than it used to. Energy doesn’t last the same way. Stress lingers longer than it should. The natural response is to push harder, do more, stay disciplined. For a while, that works until it doesn’t. What becomes clear is that the issue is rarely a lack of effort. In many cases, it’s the opposite. The brain and body are already working overtime, compensating in ways that aren’t always visible. Greg Heckroth, Founder of Genesis Brain Institute, shared, “High functioning does not always mean optimized.”

That idea reframes the conversation around performance. At Genesis Brain Institute, the starting point isn’t about doing more, it’s about understanding more. Their physician-led, data-driven model is built on the belief that how the brain, nervous system, and body work together shapes performance.

“We believe the way your brain, nervous system, and body are working together shapes how clearly you think, how well you recover, and how strongly you perform,” Greg explained. This shifts the focus from surface-level solutions to understanding the system.

That process begins with Quant360, a comprehensive baseline designed to evaluate the body as a whole. Instead of focusing on a single symptom, it looks at cognitive function, nervous system regulation, balance, coordination, and internal markers that influence everything from focus to recovery. It also includes tools like qEEG brain mapping, a noninvasive way to measure how the brain is functioning rather than relying on assumptions. “Understanding a true baseline matters because you cannot improve what you have not fully understood,” Greg noted. What this analysis reveals is not dysfunction, but inefficiency. “The symptom is not always the full story,” he shared. Someone who appears to be doing well may be using more effort than necessary to maintain focus, regulate stress, or move through their day, quietly limiting clarity, resilience, and performance.

What makes this approach compelling is not just how it applies to performance, but the heart behind it. They work with executives, entrepreneurs, athletes, and high performers who want to think clearly, recover better, and perform at a higher level. But what moves them just as much are the people and families who come in looking for hope. It may be parents trying to understand how their child’s brain is functioning, a teen feeling overwhelmed, a parent who knows something is off, or someone navigating pain or concussion symptoms.

“This approach is really for anyone who wants answers, clarity, and hope,” Greg shared. Because performance isn’t just about output, it’s about capacity: the ability to think clearly, stay steady under pressure, recover effectively, and move through life without everything requiring more effort than it should.

“Every brain is individual, every body is individual, and every person’s story is personal.”

At Genesis Brain Institute, their model isn’t built on generic protocols, but on individualized understanding. “Every brain is individual, every body is individual, and every person’s story is personal,” Greg explained. Combining data with clinical insight and a multidisciplinary approach, they’re able to see the full picture: what’s working, what’s overworked, and what may be quietly limiting performance. When that clarity is achieved, the path forward becomes intentional. Focus becomes easier, energy more consistent, and recovery more efficient, shifting performance from something that is forced to something that is supported.

Perhaps the most powerful takeaway is that you don’t have to wait until something breaks to start paying attention. “Once you know your baseline, there is often far more potential than you realize.” Because when you understand how your brain and body are functioning, everything begins to shift— not just in how you perform, but in how you think, feel, and move through your life with greater clarity, resilience, and control.

Leadership & Legacy

These men are crafting Tampa with intention and care.

TJ FATINIKUN

T-FAT’S AUTO SPA & G.I.F.T.E.D LEGACY GROUP

TJ Fatinikun, founder of T-FAT’s Auto Spa and G.I.F.T.E.D Legacy Group, is redefining what it means to serve with intention. A former professional athlete with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his foundation in discipline now fuels a new standard in business and leadership. Rooted in excellence, his work goes beyond automotive care, it’s about creating an experience that reflects value, precision, and purpose.

“We’re shaping mindsets, systems, and legacy,” shared Fatinikun. His approach blends elevated service with a mission to impact how people think, grow, and invest in themselves.

That same intentionality carries into how he views community. For TJ, it’s not optional, it’s a responsibility. “Community is love…it’s making a constant choice to contribute, not just benefit,” added Fatinikun.

Through mentorship programs like the G.I.F.T.E.D Legacy Group, he pours into the next generation, creating environments where young men are exposed to opportunity, structure, and belief.

At the heart of his work is a clear definition of legacy: impact that multiplies. “Success without impact is temporary, legacy is what continues,” said Fatinikun. Whether through business or mentorship, TJ is building something designed to outlive him, one person, one standard at a time.

Gerardo Bonilla, Club Pro at The Motor Enclave, leads with a combination of passion, precision, and people-first leadership. At the heart of one of Tampa’s most dynamic experiential destinations, he helps create an environment where motorsports, events, and community converge into something greater than the sum of its parts. With over three decades in the motorsports industry, Gerardo brings depth and vision to his role, focused on delivering experiences that exceed expectations.

His approach to leadership is rooted in care and enthusiasm for the work, “I genuinely look forward to work every day,” shared Bonilla. “No two days are the same…I love motorsports, I love events, and I love people.” That passion translates into a culture of excellence, where every detail is intentional and every interaction is an opportunity to elevate the experience. Whether overseeing events or supporting his team, Gerardo leads by example, setting a tone that values performance and people.

“I genuinely look forward to work every day,” shared Bonilla. “No two days are the same…I love motorsports, I love events, and I love people.” That passion translates into a culture of excellence, where every detail is intentional and every interaction is an opportunity to elevate the experience.

Community is a natural extension of that mindset. For Gerardo, it’s about creating spaces where people feel connected and valued. “We want each of them to feel like we are part of a family, whose mission is to improve the lives of everyone we touch,” explained Bonilla. Through events like Cars en Coffee, which draws thousands from across the region, The Motor Enclave has become a hub for shared passion and connection.

At its core, Gerardo’s leadership is about building something lasting. By investing in people, fostering joy, and maintaining a standard of excellence, he is shaping a culture that extends beyond the gates of The Motor Enclave, one that continues to grow through every person it impacts.

His commitment to excellence is grounded in intentionality and attention to detail. “Success is entirely dependent on the details,” Tom shared. “Intentionality means ensuring everyone involved has the right tools, knowledge, and support to execute the mission safely and effectively.” Whether managing projects at his Hyde Park showroom, coordinating logistics for his team, or supporting large-scale initiatives, Tom leads with preparation, clear communication, and a deep respect for the people he serves and works alongside daily. His ability to balance precision with creativity allows him to deliver results that are both highly functional and visually impactful for every client he serves with consistency, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to excellence always.

Fired Up!

MEN DON’T NEED TO LOSE THEIR FIRE AS THEY AGE.

It can sneak up on you.

One day you’re full of energy, excited to tackle your day, enjoying workouts and making plans. Over time, the activities you used to love dwindle. Now you can’t make it through the day without an afternoon nap. You feel like a stranger in your own body. Many men just chalk it up to getting older –and age can certainly be a factor – but more often than not, there is a medical reason for the decline. The solution can be easy to find with the right guidance.

That’s where Andrew Hewitt, Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and owner of Firebird Vitality, comes into play for the many men who come to him seeking help. “A lot of guys, right after dinner, they’re ready to fall asleep. And we could all make the excuse we’re up at four or five o’clock in the morning. But that doesn’t mean we should be falling asleep at six o’clock,” explained Hewitt. “I started seeing more and more men with a lot of the same issues, fatigue, disengaged from their everyday life, not interested in what they used to be - all signs of clinical depression. And it just seemed like there has to be something else going on,” added Hewitt.

Andrew saw a clear pattern emerging. All the men were in the same age range of 38-56 years old and many were on medications that worked in the past but were no longer offering the same results. He started researching clinical studies and running labs to identify underlying issues. “Most of the men are low in vitamin D, which would lead to depression, but their

testosterones are all low,” shared Hewitt. With supplements and medications, his patients were seeing huge impacts. “They start getting back to the gym. They start feeling better, looking better, mentally they’re re-engaged in life, whether it’s just hobbies or being present,” added Hewitt.

According to Hewitt, the optimal testosterone range for men to feel their best is between 900-1200 ng/dL (nanograms per deciliter). The main signs that men experience that indicate a potential problem with their testosterone levels are fatigue, disengagement, brain fog, lack of interest in anything, and low libido. While levels naturally lower as we age, regular physical activity also has an impact. “Our grandfathers and great grandfathers probably died with testosterone levels in the nine hundreds. Food was different. Lifestyle was different. A lot of them had physical jobs that required them to be moving. They didn’t have to go to a gym. But life changes evolution,” shared Hewitt. Those with a very active job will see less of a decline than those in a more sedentary position.

But activity level isn’t the only cause of decline. Nutrition also can have an impact. “We’re all guilty of it. We grab what we can. We’re all working hard, but, you know, you can meal prep and you’re still doing the same grab and go. There’s a good source of nutrients and protein that your body needs. It’s right there. It’s ready for you. It just you have to change that mindset of what is your grab and go,” offered Hewitt.

Armed with what to look for, it can be easy for men to reclaim their fire. The first steps Andrew has his patients do is take the ADAM (Androgen Deficiency in Aging Males) questionnaire on the Firebird Vitality website and labs. With those results and an assessment of current diet, sleep habits, and exercise, he’s able to create a plan to take back their lives. The tactics are wellrounded, including supplements, medication, diet changes, and a directed exercise

“Doing a treadmill for 30 minutes three times a week might not be what your body needs. What we really need to work on is our core strength and mobility.”
- Andrew Hewitt, Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and owner of Firebird Vitality.
“I’m treating from experience. These are all things I’ve done in the last five years to make my life better, and I see the benefit.”

plan focusing strongly on weights. “Doing a treadmill for 30 minutes three times a week might not be what your body needs,” offered Hewitt. “What we really need to work on is our core strength and mobility. A lot of it is kettlebell stuff and moving the weight across your body. The core has to get engaged. It doesn’t matter if you bench press 500 pounds if you have difficulty walking for five steps.”

For Andrew, the commitment he shows towards his patients at Firebird Vitality is very personal. “I’m speaking from experience. I’m treating from experience. These are all things I’ve done in the last five years to make my life better, and I see the benefit. My wife sees the benefit. My children see how different I am from eight years ago to now, when I was not even recognizable at 350 pounds. I want everyone else to feel like this,” shared Hewitt.

For many men, knowing others have experienced the same feelings and come back stronger can be all they need to take those first steps. Once they reach out, they can quickly be on the road to reclaiming their life and feeling fired up and ready for life again!

Firebird Vitality

Andrew Hewitt and the Firebird Vitality team help men assess their health with a full-body and mind evaluation to determine what your body is missing and stopping you from living your best life. They offer science-based tactics and custom protocols designed specifically for your body’s needs. Plans encompass medication and supplements as needed, paired with training, nutrition, and mindset to drop fat, build lean muscle, and regain your drive again. Andrew believes no man should feel like a stranger in their own body. Power belongs to those who take it back. Stop surviving and start dominating.

WHERE HOME BECOMES THE DESTINATION

Clear Solutions

In Florida, storm season is inevitable. Your home’s protection depends on preparation.

In Tampa Bay, storm season isn’t a matter of if, it’s when. Between heat, humidity, salt air, and hurricane exposure, homes here face a unique combination of conditions that constantly test their strength. And while storms often take the blame, the reality is something most homeowners don’t realize until it’s too late.

“Storms expose weaknesses, they don’t create them,” said William Dring of Red Sky Exteriors. With years of experience in Florida’s home improvement industry, Dring has worked across every phase of exterior projects, from sales and measurement to installation oversight. His approach is rooted in doing things the right way from the start, focusing on educating homeowners, engineering the right solution for each opening, and ensuring it’s installed correctly the first time.

That level of intention is critical in a market like Tampa, where many homes were built under outdated codes or aren’t equipped for today’s environmental demands. According to Dring, the key to protecting your home isn’t reacting after damage occurs, it’s preparing in advance. “Preparation is everything,” he said, noting most major issues seen during storms are preventable, they just aren’t addressed early enough.

Protecting your home starts with understanding that its exterior is not a collection of parts, but a complete system. The roof,

windows, doors, siding, and waterproofing all work together to keep wind and water out, and when one component fails, it can impact everything else.

To proactively protect your home, Dring recommends starting with the fundamentals: ensuring the roof is in good condition, addressing any signs of water intrusion, and considering impactrated windows and doors. These upgrades not only strengthen a home against storms but also improve insulation and reduce longterm energy costs. Outdated systems can quietly cost homeowners over time through higher energy bills and hidden damage.

If your home does sustain storm damage, acting quickly is critical. The first priority, Dring advised, is stopping any active exposure, whether that means tarping a roof, sealing an opening, or preventing water from continuing to enter the home. From there, documentation is essential, followed by working with a contractor who can

provide a long-term solution, not just a temporary fix.

When it comes to exterior protection, windows, doors, and roofing systems go far beyond appearance. In Florida, they serve as structural components designed to withstand pressure, impact, and water intrusion. “The roof is your home’s first line of defense, but it doesn’t work alone,” Dring said.

Still, even the best materials can fail if they aren’t installed correctly.

Dring emphasized that most failures aren’t due to the products themselves, but improper installation.

That’s why choosing the right company matters. Homeowners should look for professionals who prioritize education, transparency, and process over quick sales. If the process feels rushed or overly focused on price, Dring noted, that is often a red flag.

As hurricane season approaches, the takeaway is clear: preparation is always more effective than reaction. “Waiting until after a storm is always more expensive, more stressful, and more disruptive,” Dring said. Taking proactive steps now could be the most important storm preparation you do all summer.

HEALER AT HEART

JoAna Werner, PA-C, is changing lives through the benefits of concierge medicine.

Exceptional care, tailored to each patient’s unique needs, provided whenever and wherever it’s needed. This is the new soul of healthcare: LX Medical, whose concierge practice puts physicians, physician associates, nurse practitioners, and other health experts including Florida’s most reputable specialists at patients’ immediate service.

“No jumping through hoops. No back and forth. No wait times. It is the truest meaning of the doctor will see you now.”

No jumping through hoops. No back and forth. No wait times. It is the truest meaning of the doctor will see you now.

LX Medical’s mission extends beyond providing primary and urgent care in the comfort of patients’ homes. Their practitioners are also helping people occupy healthier, longer-lasting bodies in a transformative approach to lifelong wellness they call “longevity medicine” –  an appealing prospect to those who intend to see and savor their triple digits.

“I started out in family medicine, then worked in surgery and urgent care before joining LX Medical,” said JoAna Werner, Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C; a licensed professional trained to diagnose, treat, and prescribe medication). “I had great experiences in those fields, but could never come to terms with how little I could ultimately do for people. Family medicine, which affords barely enough time to apply a bandage and prescribe medication before seeing the next patient, was particularly frustrating.

“LX Medical lets me practice medicine the way I’d always hoped to. I’m now able to treat each of my patients as a complete person – not as a series of one-off problems, but as the whole human being they actually are.”

LX Medical’s abandonment of the constrictive fee-for-service model frees JoAna to request unconventionally comprehensive lab work and prescribe treatment regardless of insurance providers’ opinions. “The blood work we perform is significantly more comprehensive than what a traditional provider would order,” JoAna explained. “We check all the same kidney, liver, thyroid, and other biological markers. But our personalized, evidence-based approach goes incomparably deeper, examining patients’ genetics, gut biomes, cardiovascular health, food sensitivities, environmental toxins, and any other facets of their well-being that merit insight.

“Once we understand the whole person and identify root causes, we optimize their health by combining traditional, functional, and integrative

medicine’s best interventions. Lifestyle changes. Nutritional supplements. Peptides. Regenerative medicine. Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy, which treats imbalance through administration of chemically identical plant-derived hormones, and in which I am certified. These are just some of our methods for treating the whole you.”

The results speak for themselves.

One patient came to JoAna with severe joint pain. Testing revealed food sensitivities and gastrointestinal dysfunction. After eliminating trigger foods and beginning a targeted regimen of peptides and probiotics, her pain was minimal within two months. She recently ran a half marathon.

Another was struggling to lose weight and teetering toward a diabetes diagnosis. JoAna prescribed lifestyle changes, a whole-foods diet, and hormone replacement. Forty-five pounds lost in four months.

A third suffered persistent bloating, nausea, and gas. JoAna diagnosed small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, to be treated with a specialized diet and antibiotic regimen. She is now comfortable and symptom-free.

A fourth endured recurrent infections, chronic fatigue, and brain fog. Testing uncovered mycotoxin illness. After mold remediation and a structured detoxification plan, she is now energized, sleeping soundly, and free of recurrent illness.

“Those are only four recent successes that come to mind,” JoAna continued. “To be sure, I treat men! Though I feel a particular

empathy toward women, for reasons that are largely self-evident. Our hormonal systems are far more intricate, and have conventionally been overlooked by traditional medicine. That’s unfortunate, because it’s not remotely uncommon for women to experience loss of energy, motivation, and libido around perimenopause and menopause. Hormonal changes accompanying those milestones can make sleeping, losing weight, and thinking clearly more difficult as well.

“Hormone replacement is only one way I help optimize my patients’ health. There are too many others to list, because LX Medical gives patients access to every evidence-based therapy that could possibly prove beneficial.

“Every provider wishes their patients longer, healthier lives. LX Medical is different, because it actually empowers me to make that a reality. Some of my patients are very young and desire the guidance they need to avoid future complications. Many more are seniors who know there are things they could have done better, but are no less determined to reach and fully enjoy advanced age. I help all of them feel better, now and in the future. At LX Medical, quality and quantity of life are of equal importance.”

LX Medical removes every barrier to premium concierge medical services. Visit  LX-Medical.com to learn more, or call (813) 491-7540 to schedule your initial consultation at your home, your workplace, or LX Medical’s Tampa clinic.

AN EXCERPT FROM EPISODE 6 OF SHARE THE LIFESTYLE, A CITY LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Photographer: Brittany Dawn Short

Creative Director: Jen Birn

Stylist: Stephanie Coultress O’Neill

Location: Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin, TX

MIKE JOHNSON HAS BUILT HIS LIFE AROUND ONE QUIETLY RADICAL IDEA: THE STANDARD YOU SET PRIVATELY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS.

After eight years in the Air Force, a celebrated run on national television, and a health crisis abroad that sent him deep into supply chains and ingredient certifications most founders never touch, the result is Oshun — a luxury ritual brand built on provenance you can trace and integrity you can verify. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Mike shares what it actually takes to build something worth putting your name on. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full episode.

Q: YOU BECAME A FAN FAVORITE ON THE BACHELORETTE AND THEN LEFT THE SPOTLIGHT. YOU MOVED TO MEXICO, LEARNED SPANISH, THEN COSTA RICA, AND BUILT A COMPANY. WHAT DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH YOU ABOUT HUMAN BEHAVIOR?

A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”

THE QUIET STANDARD:

MIKE JOHNSON

“Too many people have prayed for me. So I’ve got to get up and do the walking.”
— Mike Johnson

Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?

A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”

Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?

A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. Every product Oshun makes carries a batch number that goes back to the exact day it was created — I can show you every single supplier, the date, the origin. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”
