SpelHouse Homecoming, kicking back and enjoying a little Sepia Soul. Whenever we have business to do for SixBlueHearts.com, this is where we congregate. I was just there this weekend. I’m so excited to see what Ryan Wilson is going to do next. The September issue may be Michelle’s favorite, but mine is without a doubt the June issue where we spotlight the guys. This month we are making sure we are taking care of home before we jaunt off to visit Tulum. Then we come back to Parlor in Atlanta for something good to eat and the perfect cocktail. My favorite part of this issue might be the cars, though. We feature a Dodge Hellcat and what’s not to love?! I mean, it’s got a Hemi! Welcome to Summer, SoFu! Let’s enjoy all it has to offer. We have some lost time to make up for and there is fun to be had!

Legal Matters

Is your Estate in Order? I ALWAYS GET EXCITED EDUCATING MY COMMUNITY ABOUT THE VITAL IMPORTANCE OF PROTECTING ONE’S ASSETS AND CREATING GENERATIONAL EQUITY AND WEALTH! Paying it forward is our legacy. Here, I briefly discuss the importance of estate planning. Remember, estate planning is not just for the wealthy—just about everyone needs estate planning in some form or another. Many people express their wishes verbally to their families but don’t complete the proper legal planning necessary to carry on family values, create generational wealth or provide financial security to their legacy. I had an elderly client that procrastinated for years, putting off getting his estate documents together. At 70 years old, he can now live out his twilight years in peace knowing he finally executed his Living Trust, Will, and Power of Attorney documents. He’s set and his beneficiaries will be blessed! Also, if you want to leave money or property to a loved one with a disability, you must plan carefully. Otherwise, you could jeopardize their ability to qualify for SSI and/or Medicaid benefits. By setting up a Special Needs Trust in your Will (or having these provisions in your Living Trust), you can avoid potential problems. Owning too many assets can disqualify someone from receiving certain government benefits. A Special Needs Trust with your loved one being the beneficiary of the trust may solve these problems. Remember, without estate plan documents, the placement of your assets, minor children, bank accounts, and more will be determined by a probate court. This could result in arrangements counter to your wishes. Creating the proper estate plan allows you to determine how your financial legacy lives on. At Granville Group Law Firm, we don’t just explain the law to you, we explain how the law affects you. Is your estate in order? For more information, visit Granville.Law.

AN

IDEA THAT FLOATED IN RYAN WILSON’S

HEAD AS A STUDENT AT GEORGETOWN LAW SCHOOL WAS CATAPULTED INTO A MISSION IN 2013: CREATE A COMMUNITY SPACE FOR YOUNG BLACK PROFESSIONALS TO CONVENE, DISCUSS THE ISSUES OF THE DAY, HOLD BUSINESS MEETINGS AND SOCIALIZE. When George Zimmerman was acquitted of killing Trayvon Martin, Wilson was angered by the verdict, but also moved more than ever to make his vision a reality. “No one’s coming to save us,” he texted T.K. Petersen, his friend and future business partner.

“Through The Gathering Spot I could accomplish a lot of the things I wanted to as a lawyer.” In other words, it was time to create what became The Gathering Spot, a multi-use private membership club in Atlanta that has grown into the largest private club in the city with 3,500 members. Founded in 2016, Wilson and Petersen describe TGS as a “hub for collaboration connections and experiences uniquely positioned to build the future of what community looks like.” The 25,000-square-foot facility is a haven for forward and creative thinkers to advance political and business ideas, develop and reinforce relationships and sometimes just to enjoy a meal and libation from its restaurant and gather with friends. Private events are held there as well, making it a multi-purpose facility. The Gathering Spot has been such a coveted place that its membership, initially targeted for the young Black community, is multi-ethnic with members ranging from 21 to 80 years old. “I wanted to be a lawyer my whole life,” said Wilson, who marched on the streets with Black Lives Matter in D.C. “But I was frustrated by what I saw in the law. It didn’t have the remedies I felt were needed to create the necessary change. “And I was inspired by this concept I had in my head. I thought that through The Gathering Spot I could accomplish a lot of the things I wanted to as a lawyer. And we have.” CONTINUED >

INSPIRED BY (CONTINUED)

How highly regarded is The Gathering Spot? Through the pandemic that shut its doors, Wilson said it retained 99% of its members. He called the pandemic “a stress test for our viability. What Covid couldn’t take away is our inspiration and passion. And our members feel that.” He and his team implemented virtual platforms through a system called TGS Connect, which allowed them to stay engaged with their membership although not in the physical space. Meanwhile, in another show of sustainability, The Gathering Spot this year opened a location in Washington, D.C., a few blocks from the White House, and already has 1,000 members, Wilson said. A space in Los Angeles is being built out for a third TGS location. Meanwhile, they are “building communities” in other cities, including New York, Chicago, Houston and Charlotte with the idea of opening The Gathering Spots there as well. Wilson’s parents, Mark and Shelly—founders of Chime Solutions, a company that provides business process outsourcing services for small and Fortune 500 companies—have been wildly successful entrepreneurs and inspirations for their son. “It’s hard to become something you haven’t seen before,” Wilson said. “I have had the advantage of real counsel. And one of the things we want to do that’s important to us is help the next generation of entrepreneurs.” It took three years and lots of rejection from potential financial backers for The Gathering Spot to open its doors. When that initial $3 million came in, Wilson, Petersen and other supporters maximized the investment. “I started out at 24 and it’s been a journey,” Wilson said. A rewarding journey with no end in sight. “We will thrive because our competition barely likes a community that we love,” Wilson said. “The love and affinity here is strong. “And we’re proud that we have become a part of the community and are making an impact in the city.” The Gathering Spot is expanding to other cities!

The anticipation of your every need before you can even garner the attention of the staff is what makes this destination spectacular. GIVING BACK

D I G I TA L BL ACK BOOK

AN EASY WAY TO SUPPORT BLACK BUSINESSES

STATISTICS FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR ARE DEVASTATING WHEN IT COMES TO BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES. They indicate 60% of those that closed during the coronavirus pandemic would never reopen—a disheartening reality. The Omicron Phi Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity—also known as the South Fulton Alphas—took that information to heart and were inspired to create an avenue to assure those numbers do not increase. Through its Economic Empowerment Committee, OPL launched its Digital Black Book—a mobile application and website that lists businesses in South Fulton that are owned by African Americans. The idea is to make it easy to identify Black-owned businesses and help them not only survive, but thrive during a precarious economic time as the country tries to recover from Covid-19. The fraternity developed the application and website that displays a thorough and developing list of stores, services, restaurants and more for patrons to be intentional about where they spend their dollars. “We want to live out the principle of Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) and make a conscious decision on where we spend and steer our dollars,” said Roberto Young, who is leading the effort for the fraternity. “We should be able to rely on each other for support.” Tally and Twine (TallyAndTwine.com), a Black-owned company that makes stylish and affordable watches for men and women, was the first featured establishment in the Digital Black Book. Co-owner Eric Heyward said the attention garnered has increased business and awareness of his company. “It’s pretty special that this app was developed specifically to support us, Black-owned businesses in South Fulton,” Heyward said. “The pandemic has been hard on everyone. To have a place set up specifically for Black businesses is a strong way to serve because we know small businesses are the backbone of communities.” Omicron Phi Lambda, which has 123 members, compiled the Blackowned establishments through its collective resources. The chapter’s strategic plan is to engage businesses, with members serving as account managers into high-capacity businesses while building authentic relationships with business owners. The OPL chapter of Alpha has been serving the South Atlanta area for more than 30 years, with scholarships for high school students, mentoring programs in schools for boys, charitable donations, political action and more. Its service areas include the city of South Fulton, College Park, East Point, Fairburn, Chattahoochee Hills, Hapeville, Union City and Palmetto.

RESPECTING YOUR LOVED ONES’ FINAL WISHES WITH DIGNITY MEMORIAL

having those tough conversations ARTICLE RANDOLPH TAYLOR

THERE ARE A LOT OF CONVERSATIONS WE HAVE IN OUR LIVES, SOME EASIER THAN OTHERS. Perhaps the hardest conversation is about the death of those closest to us (a spouse or family member) and certainly that of making our own final arrangements. The reason is relatively simple to understand. Discussing death in general is just not a comfortable conversation, and it’s even more uncomfortable to discuss our own. When a death occurs and no plans or decisions have been made, the difficult conversation begins. When the phone rings and you hear the news that someone you loved has passed, the big question immediately becomes, “What now?” Unfortunately, something that was never a thought before suddenly becomes a reality. In the midst of tragedy, one of life’s most difficult decisions must be made. They say there are 124 decisions that must be made within the first 24 to 48 hours after a death. It will likely feel more like 1,024 decisions. Ultimately, no matter how much your spouse, parent, or loved one specifically knows you, there are two questions that they may never know the answers to: 1) “Did I do the right thing?” and 2) “Did I do what they would have wanted?” Dignity Memorial plans for and protects the ones you care about; planning for the inevitable just makes sense. 28

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE THE PRO GOLFER’S FITNESS JOURNEY

SCOTT

STALLINGS’

WORKOUT ARTICLE CITY LIFESTYLE

SCOTT STALLINGS DISCOVERED HIS INTEREST IN GOLF AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 3. But it was the “aha moment” for his love of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors. Little did he know at the time, however, not just how successful he would become, but also how an unforeseen health compromise would also rock his world, and his cross training, for the better. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer. Flash forward to the year 2016: It became a life-changing year he never would have anticipated; one filled with strife as he learned he had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and acute adrenal fatigue. It was a result of some unhealthy nutritional habits, both of which affected his ability to continue effectively as a professional athlete. With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night. Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed. Luckily for Scott, he didn’t have an overwhelming, crazy life overhaul. Instead, he was able to find one small thing, delivering simple systematic changes in his workout that led to his improvement in fitness and quality of life. “You only get one body,” he says. “Golf is a grind, but don’t let physicality get in the way of your game,” Scott says.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE (CONTINUED)

SCOTT’S TOP EXERCISES

KETTLEBELL POWER SNATCH: Uses ground force to leverage the kettlebell upward, then the shoulder, arm and back support the weight as it gets pushed overhead. Also a great cardio exercise and trains the body for a good golf swing.

KETTLEBELL HALO: Start by holding the kettlebell upside down at chest height, then lift the weight to head height and rotate it around the head like a halo in both directions. This exercise focuses on shoulder mobility—which is important for a good golf swing—and warms up the muscles and soft tissue around the shoulder girdle.

CLEAN TO LUNGE: First, the kettlebell is lifted from the ground to shoulder height. Then, the foward lunge loads weight into the legs one at a time, which happens from the backswing to the downswing. The exercise increases strength in calves and forearms, which is essential for a powerful swing.

LANDMINES: LANDMINE RAINBOW: Tracing the shape of a rainbow, take the barbell down alongside each hip in a rotational movement and then back to an overhead position. Strengthens legs, shoulders and arms; improves coordination for ground-up downswing. LANDMINE ROTATIONAL CLEAN AND PRESS: Facing the landmine, hold the bar in your right hand, then pivot your toes 90 degrees to the left, dropping into a deep lunge while still holding the bar with your straight arm. Press into your front foot and stand up as you press and lift the barbell to chest height, all in one quick motion. From the waist down, this move mimics the look of a golfer finishing a swing. LANDMINE THRUSTER: Thrust the barbell upward from a squat position. Builds lower-body muscles, which are key for the start of the ground swing and to get longer off the tee. 34
