HEY Y’ALL, It’s the most wonderful time of the year! This year it feels like Christmas came early. The Hallmark Channel led by our beloved Wonya Lucas, formerly of Ballethnic, started showing Christmas movies well before Halloween. Seems like we are in need of some cheer! I can’t stop thinking about travelling this holiday season. I had my heart set on a Disney Cruise but that wasn’t in the cards. I’m thinking of going to Paris with my son for Spring Break with Mocha Travel, a #SoFu-based company that plans tours tailored just for families. But right now, I need some beach in my life. Or maybe a little holiday snow at Biltmore in North Carolina. I simply can’t decide. This month we have some great features on the award-winning Dancemakers of Atlanta and our annual Gift Guide. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as we loved making it just for you. Merry Christmas, South Fulton and Happy New Year!

It’s the small things that add more life! The City of South Fulton offers its residents something that we’re all learning, once again, to appreciate—quality of life. The big things—malls, franchises, big box chain stores—are not necessarily the things that make communities more livable. Little things often do that. With limitations on globetrotting, the essence of travel and experiencing new things is not only found in far off places. Exploring South Fulton and supporting local businesses can be fun and plays a key role in sustaining the community and showcasing it as a viable destination. Small business, local merchants, family-owned restaurants. Neighbors whose names you actually know. These things all help to make communities more livable.

Christmas at Biltmore Give your family the gift of an unforgettable holiday experience. This time-honored tradition dates back more than 125 years ago when George Vanderbilt celebrated the first Christmas with family and friends in his new home—Biltmore House. Guests are invited every year to enjoy the enchantment of the holidays on the estate, inspired by that first Christmas in Biltmore House. Unique this year is the opportunity to also experience Van Gogh Alive presented by Grande Experiences, the first of three multi-sensory digital art exhibitions in a year-long series. Two experiences are available to enjoy Biltmore during the holiday season—the Christmas at Biltmore daytime house tour experience, and the Candlelight Christmas Evenings nighttime house tour experience. The entire estate is open to guests as part of admission to either Christmas experience. Christmas at Biltmore Daytime Celebration, through Jan. 9, 2022 This beloved tradition includes a daytime tour of Biltmore House while the estate is adorned with holiday decorations that number in the thousands. A daytime visit to Biltmore is a feast for the senses, featuring wreaths, garlands, and the sparkle of ornaments. From Biltmore House to the Winery and Antler Hill Village to Van Gogh Alive, guests will want to linger on the estate to experience all that Christmas at Biltmore has to offer. Christmas at Biltmore

Candlelight Christmas Evenings, through Jan. 8, 2022 Biltmore House glows with candlelight and firelight during this nighttime tour, changing the daytime visit’s mood and experience. Candlelight Christmas Evenings in Biltmore House allow guests to step back in time with an experience reminiscent of the Vanderbilt’s first Christmas spent in Biltmore House in 1895. Musicians stationed throughout the house perform seasonal favorites. Setting the scene is a 55-foot Norway spruce sparkling in the center of the front lawn. Two hundred and fifty hand-lit luminaries line the walkway to Biltmore House. Those visiting for evening tours will want to arrive early to experience all the estate has to offer during the season, from holiday menus to the Winery to Antler Hill Village and Van Gogh Alive.

Mocha Travel Company AN INTERVIEW WITH KATRINA MORRISON OF MOCHA TRAVEL 1. What’s your favorite travel destination? My favorite destination is home. As a frequent traveler I’ve gone to some amazing places, but of all these places, being home in Atlanta is my favorite. My home is my sanctuary. It’s the one place where I feel whole and complete. When travel stopped in 2020, it hit me hard. I lived most of my life on the road, so it wasn’t easy staying home and not preparing to travel. During that time I began to appreciate all that I have and all that my family and I have created in our home and community in Atlanta. We enjoyed local places like the Zoo, Atlanta History Center, and the skating rink. Now that travel is back open, I look forward to exploring my bucket list, but home will remain my favorite place.

2. Any travel tips for travelling with kids? Yes, lots! Most importantly, allow your children to take part in planning the trip. Travel is one of the best ways for children to acquire life skills. Get them involved early by letting them suggest activities, choose seats on the plane (window or aisle), and select dining options. Make it age appropriate, of course. This allows them to fully engage in the trip instead of feeling disconnected and bored. 3. Why use a travel company? It takes a lot of time and skill to plan a trip of a lifetime. A travel advisor can save you from a disastrous trip. There’s nothing wrong with DIY travel plans for easy domestic trips that only require hotel and flights, but when you’re going abroad or have more complex plans, it’s best to use a professional travel advisor. Not only can you save money by packaging your trip with your travel agent’s help, but you can also find payment plans and add amenities that are only available when booking with a travel advisor. Travel advisors can also advocate for you if something goes wrong with your plans by contacting the hotel or airline and requesting a resolution.

4. What was the most important thing you learned in the pandemic? The most important thing I learned is Mindfulness, the ability to be fully present. Being fully present is a challenge when you’re always in motion. Travel kept me in motion. When travel stopped, I didn’t know what to do next. My body and mind were not used to the stillness. A good friend of mine sent me a link to free Yoga training. That’s how I started meditating and that’s when I discovered the gift of mindfulness. 5. Any tips for holiday travel? + Book in advance to save money. + Choose your airline seating in advance if possible. + If you can, avoid checking bags. + Get trip protection. + Cash in your credit card points to save a little more. + Skip the TSA lines and get CLEAR to save time. + Avoid large crowds. + Follow CDC travel guidelines. + Consider a staycation. + Check out off-season destinations for the holidays, such as beach towns or a lake house for less crowds and lower costs.

GIVING BACK

Gratefully

ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy

IT’S TIME TO THINK ABOUT GIVING! The holiday season has officially begun. Decisions are upon us. All of the normal holiday decisions, like which Lego set to buy the little ones or which relatives to invite (or not) for dinner, are dancing through our heads. While things are looking a little less cluttered on the tax calendar now, we are still busily helping clients make year-end adjustments for a more favorable tax return come 2022. One way to have a more favorable tax return is to spread the holiday cheer through some IRSapproved charitable giving. While you’re planning out all those gifts, you can plan some causes to give to as well. After two years of hard hits on the economy, there are plenty of people and places needing help. Here are some tax break-giving ideas to get you started. Here’s a quick overview of four expanded tax benefits this year for both individuals and businesses.

an individual to a qualifying public charity, those known as 501(c)(3) nonprofits, generally is limited to 60% of the taxpayer’s AGI.
